Burger #117: A Long Beach Gem While out hunting for wedding venues, we ended up in Long Beach. What else is in LB? Lots and lots of burger places that I have neglected to try over the last year. 49'rs Tavern was at the top of the LB burger list, so I figured I'd start there. The parking lot left something to the imagination, very small and awkward. We ended up parking on the street around back. Inside was nice and dark, lots of big flat TVs playing sports, and giant goblets of cheap beer were flowing like wine. I side-stepped their burger challenge and ordered the Arnold Burger (named for the pig not the man), which came with ham, bacon, and swiss cheese. I upped it to jesus style, 1/2 pound from 1/3 pound. The girl ordered the 'Frisco Burger, which came topped with provolone and parmesan cheese on sourdough bread. The waitress didn't ask how we'd like our burgers cooked, I then became worried. I've been passing by this place ever since I lived in Long Beach. Everytime the sign out front claiming the best burgers in town catches my eye. So finally after so many years I finally had a chance to try the best burger in town. Wouldn't you know it it is the best. At least top five. On my quest for the perfect burger I have come up with a scale for grading good burgers. These burgers are at least a 7 napkin on my scale. 10 napkins being the best. I can't really pinpoint what it is that makes these burgers so good. It has to be the quality of the meat or is it the spicey sweet mustard. Seriously I don't know what it is. My advise is come in and try one. Now this place isn't a restaurant or cafe. It's a dive bar and they don't claim to be anything else. Awww... I just read Holly T.'s review and it brought back so many warm and fuzzy memories of my undergrad years at CSULB. The 49'rs Tavern was the perfect off campus dive bar to hit up for a few beers, a game of pool, some peanuts and some fun tunes on the jukebox. Sometimes you just had to get away from the Nugget and get the heck away from campus (well at least across the street from it) My fondest memory of this place was when 5 of us went and apart from 2 other patrons and the bartender we were the only ones there! I was able to program the jukebox to play Sublime's cover of Marley's Trenchtown Rock over and over, play pool (which I hate doing because I suck) and spill beer without being scowled at by the bartender (because I'm a clumsy dork). This review is for happy hour: The burgers were about $7 and $3 beer during happy hour. They are pretty simple burgers but delicious. The burgers come with a small bag of potato chips. I got the Ortega burger. Nothing out of the ordinary but pretty solid. It took like 20 minutes for them to make it though. The server lady there was really nice. I LOVE my new home for a Bud and a burger! The only reason I can't give this 5 stars is because there is no fries. That will change soon so then I can bring this up to 5 stars. As for the burger itself. PHENOMENAL! It is chargrilled, It is juicy. It has a distinct flavor that cannot be duplicated. My Red, White, and Bleu Cheese burger last no more that 5 minutes. It would've been shorter if I didn't take a picture (see pix). They have different burgers available which I plan on trying. The burgers are that good that I could be here for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. This is a great venue to hang on a weekend to watch sports, shoot stick, and drink beer. This place smells worse than any dive bar actually should. It's right across the street from the Long Beach state, yet is completely empty on a Thursday. The bartender is some chunky blonde girl who could not even pretend to display any kind of professionalism if she tried. She was talking to some customer for 5 minutes before she finally asked us what we wanted. The entire time she looked at me like she had no idea why I was even there. Normally I love the 49er. It has awesome ambiance, cool patrons, literally the best burgers I've ever put in my body. Seriously, I dream about those burgers. And normally the staff is great too. Unfortunately this past Monday, my boyfriend and I had the absolute worst experience. The bartender that evening, Carin, was horrible. She was incredibly rude, standoffish, acted as though we were the biggest inconvenience. She spent most of the 2 hours we were there sitting at the end of the bar, chatting up some guys and drinking from their beers. Which I'm pretty sure that's illegal to do on your shift. Her first acknowledgement to us, after she finally pulled herself away from the gentlemen, was "what?" When we wanted to order, she rudely asked us "what do you want?" I hadn't been to the 49'r since the opened under new ownership, but one Friday night I was watching an episode of Jamie Oliver's food revolution and he kept talking about how gross a fast food hamburger is, and all I could think was, "Must. Have. Cheeseburger. NOW." I blame it all on Jamie Oliver. In any case, it was a perfect time to check out what's new at the 49'r. They've added some booths and lots of old school beer ads everywhere, those are plusses. They took out the pinball machine and replaced it with a basketball game; that's a huge minus. They don't have waiter service anymore, you have to order from the bar, and it's all cash only. Other than those changes, it's pretty much the same ol' 49'r. The burgers taste just as delicious as they always have. They have some surprisingly good beer on tap. And it's the perfect place to watch baseball games and listen to country music and shoot pool simultaneously. read more

A total dive bar set up, with pictures from the 50s, random celebrities, posts from the 20s, etc. There are 5 screens each playing a different sport, 2 pool tables, and many seating areas. Lighting is dim and music is not that loud. Parking inside the tiny plaza is rare so I'd advised you park in the neighborhood next to the tiny plaza. This has been the hang out spot for many grad students from csulb. We've been catching trivia night, Tuesday nights, together as a hot mess team (but brilliant to boot!). Team names: BLACK AND YELLOW AND PUTTANESCA. I personally have not ordered the 3 times I've been here but my friends have. They've gotten the soft tacos and nachos, all which were pretty darn good. Just not many health options as I would prefer, but hey, it's a freaking dive bar so I can't say anything (lol). The service is friendly and fast. Sometimes they can be swamped so be patient. (Shoutout to kelly for taking care of us!). The people who come for trivia are loud, fun and witty. The trivia host is a silly guy, rather sweet in my opinion, who seems to love our names and teammates. The questions are random as you would expect trivia to be. It works out well because most our team members know 1 topic well enough to get the questions. How does trivia work? You get 7 or more rounds of either 3 questions or 1 bonus question, each worth a certain amount of points. Only the bonus questions will dock you points if incorrect. Those participating (it's free by the way), are given a slip of paper with 3 blanks on it. The host will ask questions and your team will decide what to place. Looking up the answers on your phone is cheating, so please don't plan to come with this in mind. After about 10 minutes, the slips are collected, the host states the answers, and the host calls aloud the winners. The team with the most points wins a prize which normally is a random item. One time we won a candle, other times we won gift certs or something else (can't recall). We will be coming on select Tuesday evenings. So, I have lived a few blocks away from this place for over a year, yet never went until tonight. I was always intrigued, by the "2 for 1 Burger" Banner I would see when driving by, because, know this my friends, Tim is a cheeseburger fan. Wimpy from Popeye...personal hero of mine (I will gladly pay you tomorrow for two burgers today..WHAT THE FUCK! Genius!!!) I finally venture into the 49er this evening to catch game one of the Angels/Yankee series (it's a seven gamer fools, no worries!) FIRST IMPRESSIONS: Very chill, lots of personal space to be had, lots of old dudes-no disrespect, I will be an old dude soon enough. Happy Hour = Bud Light pitchers for $6.75, very economy friendly. However, when I tried said "Gods Cheeseburger", God must be a rabbit, cause this burger was mostly lettuce with onions. Since reopening, they didn't bring back Matt. Now it's like The Crusty Crab without SpongeBob. To add insult to injury, they're cooking their food on a hotplate, no BBQ. It's pitiful. $8.00 for a crappy burger? Yeh right. If you read the older reviews about how good the food was, it's history (as in history / gone / no more). They're saying they want to be like Joe Jost's, Hah! If I want Joe Jost's I'll drive down the street to Joe Jost's for colder, cheaper beer, better food, HELL, better everything. This burger made my day! What a find! After a crap-ass day at work and finding out that our alternate burger and beer plans (beachwood BBQ) had not panned out, we read some reviews and headed over. Once inside, we were pleased to see it relatively empty, with a few regulars hanging out and some gents behind the bar. Also damn pleased to see an IPA on draft- and in a frosty 20 oz schooner for 5.50. We ordered a bacon burger and a pendejo burger. Both were juicy, moist and well seasoned. The bacon burger was topped with lettuce, cheddar cheese, onions, tomato, and some delicious mayo-based sauce. The pendejo- muy caliente indeed! Same patty topped with the veggie fixins- but with Jalapeno jack, ortega chile and some sort of hot sauce. My lips were a' burnin. Went perfect with an ice cold IPA. They were messy- I must have used close to 10 napkins. The service was great, jukebox was pretty good, too. Plus they gave us these cards where if you buy 5 burgers you get the 6th free. We are only in the LBC for another week, but we just might try and go for our free burgers. read more
