We had made reservations for 6:30 p.m., and The Bell Boys started playing at 7 p.m. and went until 10 p.m. We've heard them before and already knew they would be great, so that part was no surprise. The restaurant and lounge both serve food, and the lounge was a perfect spot to enjoy the music. Everything was better than expected. I had the Pot Roast Caesar Salad. The pot roast was super tender, and the salad was crisp and flavorful. The service was excellent, too. Everyone was friendly, attentive, and made us feel welcome without rushing us, even though the music went later than the posted restaurant/lounge hours. I also had one of their specialty drinks, The Rat Pack Martini, made with Grand Marnier, Maker's Mark, sweet vermouth, Cinzano, and a Luxardo cherry. Yummy. I'd come back just to have another one of those. We came with friends to hear the band and ended up having a really great evening. We only dined in. The food was very subpar. We had Filet Mignon, Clam Linguine (had zero specs of garlic), Pot Roast, Spaghetti & Meatballs, and Salmon I believe. Trani's used to have great food. Not anymore. We had 2 apps. Fried Zucchini & Garlic Bread. Zucchini was cut into quarter sized chips and had zero crunch even tho they were breaded & fried. The bread was so-so. Only non complaint was the meatballs .. everything else was absolutely not worthy of 'steakhouse' quality (& cost). I grew up on Trani's in San Pedro .. My wife and I came to lunch at Phil Trainis for Saint Patrick's Day. Started out with a Guinness beer ,delicious. It's a tradition for me on St. Patrick's Day. My wife and I both ordered potato leek soup. It was amazing great depth of flavor. Perfect Irish Green. We split a hot corn beef sandwich on marble rye with fried potatoes . We had our company Christmas lunch here and it was so nice to have a nice quiet place for us to enjoy. There's a lot of history in this place so enjoy touring the interior. The service staff were extremely nice. They were also very knowledgeable about the menu and gave great suggestions. The food was pretty good. French bread with butter was provided. I ordered the jambalaya. Seafood was cooked great and had a good kick. Not too overpowering. Nice to have a small dining place near us for special occasions. Will be coming back. read more

Then the second time it Came out "cool" My meal was COLD from the start. Sent it back and they microwaved the shell fish. The clam shells were hot but everything else was still cold. We had to wait wait 10 minutes for a manager... then another 30 minutes for our "new" meals to be prepared. Our server was wonderful and as accommodating as she could be. If it wasn't for the great band they wouldn't have had anyone in restaurant to dine. So next time you want drop a $100+ on a meal. Been going there for 25plus years. The decor was updated once or twice, once when a restaurant "makeover" show chose them. Nice bar, "clubby" atmosphere (lots of 'regulars'). Owner has cut back on lunch service on most weekdays, and closed Sundays these days I believe. The liveliest times are the Friday and Saturday nights, when they have a band which brings a good crowd. Place has a nice outdoor patio, though they get frequent noise complaints from condo neighbors who live right behind the restaurant and patio. Food is generally good, depends on who's cooking and how busy it is, nonetheless. If you are looking for True Fine Dining however, there are better choices: 555 and the Sky Room in downtown LB, Dal Rae in Pico Rivera for example. after about 30 years of eating there for dinner, I finally went to lunch. I had the fish and chips halibut. It was notably bad. It appeared to be fish triangles from Smart and final pan fried and some kind of a very low temperature so the entire product that they put out in front of me was basically oil soaked breading. The fish was tough like it was microwaved. It wasn't worth three dollars let alone 26. If you go go for the dinner, fish and chips is not on the menu for This was my first real bad experience with the food there. I'll go back, but won"t order the fish and chips ever again. read more

Very disappointed....I'm going home hungry! Ordered a $41 Chilean sea bass and the fish itself was 2 bites big.... The veal marsala was also incredibly salty. Really nice experience at the famous Phil Trani's, located in Long Beach, CA. I've been wanting to try Phil Trani's for a bit now, so my wife and I finally made the effort to drive up to the north part of Long Beach on a Tuesday later morning. Per Google Maps and their website, it is supposed to be open at 11 am but Yelp was correct when they had hours beginning at 11:30. They unlocked the gate at 11:25 , for a 11:30 opening. There is a huge dedicated parking lot, with large parking spots so waited a bit, and then walked in. We were greeted warmly by the host who had unlocked the gate, and taken to a shared booth/table. We were the first in, but regulars soon came in to sit at the bar. The waiting area was decorated with plaques and newspaper articles about the history of this restaurant and its popularity. Inside, there are tons of sports memorabilia, with names that didn't ring a bell to me, but must have meant a lot to the owner. It was like being inside a wealthy person's man cave. So did I mention the wrong hours on their website?...their website seemed pretty good, with a lot of information, and well organized...at one time, somebody took a lot of care to create the site. The problem is that it is not being updated. There were messages still from the Covid era, and the menu prices were 40% - 60% higher than on the site. This is why a lot of restaurants don't put prices on their website menus, expecting guests to get it when they arrive or get it from places like Yelp. We got complementary half loaf of bread that had just been baked, with a lot of whipped butter...so that helped a lot. We wanted to try their pot roast wet beef sandwich, but were then told that it wasn't available. Because it takes 7 hours to make, thinking it was just being made (since yesterday was Memorial Day), and they didn't want to serve reheated pot roast (which I think is a really good sign of their commitment to quality). The food was really good. My wife decided to get the deluxe cheeseburger with fries ($23). It was a very large burger (closer to half a pound than a quarter), served on a really sturdy brioche bun, with lettuce/tomato/onion on the side. It came with french FRIED potatoes...not really french fries, but big wedges of potato that had been oven fried for a long time. These are not that common in restaurants, and we really enjoyed it. The meat on the burger was OK quality. Another dish that I don't see much of in LA, are sand dabs ($24). I really like the delicate flakiness of flatfish, so will try that whenever I can. I figured it would come with one filet, maybe two..but this one came with THREE...and they were large pieces. The meat was very, very thin, and most of the thickness of the meal was the breading, but it had been expertly cooked so it wasn't too greasy. The breading was excellent. Yes, most of the taste was from the breading and not the fish itself, but the quantity given was very generous. Nowhere does it say how many pieces this dish has, so I wonder if the number of pieces are reflected in how thick the sand dabs are (since you can't really control what the supplier has at what time). It would have been better with tartar sauce...I just used the leftover thousand island dressing that came as a side with the burger. It came with chosen garlic mashed potatoes (good, definitely heavy but not too much so), and unannounced broccoli/green beans, which was a nice surprise. It's a dinner portion. The service was excellent throughout...they were very well staffed, and because it wasn't so busy when we ate, we were checked up on. My water glass was continuously refilled whenever I needed it. Cathy was our waitress, and the host was also attentive as well. The ambiance reminded me of the old supper club atmosphere, popular in Wisconsin (well to do, older, white). The food and surroundings would also have been very appropriate for a country club clubhouse restaurant as well, where if you are not part of the club, you feel very different than the regulars. But that is the opposite of a tourist restaurant, and I'm glad that this part of Long Beach has Phil Trani's....because diversity is good in our city . read more

This crown jewel of Long Beach restaurants has decades of tradition with an extraordinary experience of "being seen and being known" by both Phil and Trish, and the rest of the staff. We came to Phil Trani's with a party of six on 05/09/2024 at about 7pm. I have personally never been to this restaurant before. It is in NW Long Beach, unassuming, older building and even the inside looks like it has been around for generations (not a bad thing). Parking is free and easy with the lot they have. It appears they have lots of outdoor seating too, if that is your thing. Our food came out very fast and our server was very nice. I would consider this a nicer diner, elevated because it has more than a diner menu would have. I had the crab stuffed halibut, which I would rank pretty high. It was good; however, it was not crab stuffed. It was a pretty large piece of Halibut; however, the crab was placed on top -- not near as much as if it was stuffed with crab. With that, I had a side of mashed potatos and veggies. I added a side cesar salad. Everything was good; however, I was just a tad disappointed with the misleading menu description on the halibut. They really need Chef Ramsey to come in here and rip Phil a new one. The food is uninspiring, the menu banal. I ordered the lasagna for $24. My Special Friend took me here yesterday for my Birthday! The ambiance was amazing, Great Music and wonderful service. However, the food was not up to par. My Chilean Sea Bass, potatoes and veggie were lukewarm to cold temperatures and my silverware still has food on it. His steak, he struggled to cut and had to be sent back for reorder. Normally, I'm not a complainer but the food could've been a little better; it was seasoned while for most part. However, on my 3rd visit tonight, I decide to take my parents. ...so they can also experience the great vibe. There were only two waitresses that night...and only one chef. We ordered an appetizer and 4 entrees. Appetizer never came but Everything was still great ....that is, until we got the check. We got charged for the appetizer that never came. When I approached the waitress to correct it she snapped at me and told me to "wait and give her a minute". I tried to explain that we've been waiting for the check for about 30 minutes and my parents needed to get home. It was getting late for them. She barked at me again. "Wait give me a minute". I shut down and proceeded to walk back to my table. She stopped me and said to wait right beside her. She snapped at me and said "I gave you your check". I said yes...it was wrong and the appetizer needs to be removed because it never arrived. She barked again at me and said she brought it. I told her "i can assure you we did not receive the app ...you may have givin it to another table" She replies "fine" ....frustrated she removed the app. "Another fire burned out tonight". This Trani restaurant is not like the others in San Pedro. Don't be tempted by the family name. Ambience and service were great. The food, however, was far from it. Started with a small plate of romaine lettuce, which they called the house salad. No cucumber no carrots, just bits of watery romaine with one piece of tomato. The filet mignon was tough and dry. After being reminded about Phil Trani's existence, I decided to finally check it out. We made reservations and were promptly seated by the hostess upon arrival. Since I couldn't decide on my entrée, our server even offered a sample of the octopus (one of the two dishes I was considering). I found this gesture very customer-oriented so kudos to her. Despite the almost empty dining area, the service was slow and I don't necessarily blame our server because, to her credit, she was attentive when she had the opportunity to do so. I think it was due to her working both the bar and dining room. The wait for our dishes was quite long too and it didn't look like new patrons arrived after us. However, when our plates were delivered to us, they looked appetizing and plentiful. Hubby got the 10 oz steak sandwich and I ordered the octopus salad. His steak was cooked as ordered (medium rare) and the meat was tender as expected. The potatoes were crispy on the outside and soft inside. My salad was yum; the octopus was perfectly done and not chewy at all. The plate was abounding with octopus so it was a very filling dish. The interiors were okay -- I thought it was a mix of old and newish decors. Meaning, lots of memorabilia, old school feel with the booth seatings, but newish with all the TVs around. So why the 4 stars? Well, it really was due to the slow service. Would I return? Yes but maybe not in the near future coz I wanna try other places first. read more

Came here for a holiday work party and I overall enjoyed the restaurant! We came with a party of 8 and inside the restaurant there was a cozy yet old feel to the restaurant. They had plenty of seating and service was fairly quick. I ordered the steak charbroiled with mashed potatoes. I also tried their calamari, mozzarella, and shrimp cocktail. All the appetizers were delicious! The time to get our food out took a long time (30+ minutes) and it was noticeable for me. When the food came, it was tasty and fresh! Both the food and the service was awful. Very seldom do I write reviews but this restaurant was worse experience I've encountered so far. I am a worldly traveler and experienced many places. I ordered their Pot roast over a salad. The pot roast wasn't fresh it was leftover and warmed in a microwave. The lettuce was 2 degrees from being wilted. After 5 minutes I had to ask for service. When finished I had to go to the counter and ask for my bill. It took another five minutes to arrive and and another five minutes to process. Back to the Future: Set the DeLorean to 1990 Doc! Walking into Phil Trani's is like going into a time warp of old school menu and atmosphere. I was invited out to a friend's birthday dinner. Upon entering it felt like going over to an eclectic Uncle's house with sports paraphernalia adorning the walls. The draw of Phil Trani's appears to be the bar with a live band as it was pretty packed. The dining room was tight with several tables put together for large parties. I felt young compared to the silver haired patrons that dominated the room. It was a Saturday night, prime time dining when the menu should be flexing the best offerings. Instead there was just two copies of a poorly printed menu offered for our table 7 to share. The menu was a fraction of what I've seen online. Phil Trani's seemed under staffed and overwhelmed. It took awhile for cocktail service. Since we were celebrating the lapse in service allowed us to talk leisurely with one another. Appetizers of a tasty fried calamari and jumbo shrimp cocktail (4) came out. We had to flag the server down to let her know we wanted to order. It took 45 minutes for the small dinner salads and soups to come out. The salad was basic. My split pea soup was cold. The outside of the small bowl was stained with dried soup as it was slopped and left to die. Another 45 minutes passed until our main courses came out. There were three attempts as the first two times it was food for another table. Each plate was auctioned off. Our host of our party received a New York when she ordered a filet. She was gracious to accept it not wanting to make a scene. My wife's Atlantic Salmon was unusually flat and pale. Upon first bite I could tell it was previously frozen as salmon's density changes. My 9 oz "Prime" New York was under seasoned. The meat quality was questionable. My steak was orders rare but came out medium well. Both of our dinners was room temperature. The baked potato was the best part of the meal. Our host had ordered a bottle champagne. The server was swinging the bottle around unaware that an uncaged cork is like a loaded gun with the safety off. Fortunately there were no casualties. I opened the second bottle. Sadly we were not offered any dessert despite it being a birthday celebration noted by cards on the table for the celebrant. The large party next to us was also a birthday celebration noted by dessert, a candle and singing. Our table had no fanfare. Our host quietly paid the bill. The night should have ended there but then the manager came out to explain the evening. She said Phil Trani himself was working the line and there was only one bartender. It was awkward. We had eaten the year before for the same gathering. Service and food was a little better then. I'm empathetic to a restaurant that's busy. I'm also aware of rising food and operational costs. But the night was a dumpster fire. It was sad and disappointing. I can only imagine what Phil Trani's was like during it's glory days. Saturday July 22nd 2023, Had dinner Reservations for 7pm to celebrate our Wedding Anniversary. Arrived an hour early and was seated at 6pm by the Host. At 6:15pm A waitress asked if we wanted to anything to drink. I replied to the waitress that I wanted to order their wine bottle special that was listed on the board at the restaurant's entrance. 15Mins goes by and the Waitress hands us a Wine Menu then walks away quickly. I stopped her 5 minutes later and told her why she gave me a wine menu instead of the wine bottle I requested. Her response in Agitation, "I am the Host, Server and Waitress and cannot do everything but will work on it and look into it!" 5 Mins later we get our water by another server. It is now 6:40pm and all we have received was our waters. Are you kidding me! 40 Minutes and this is the best this establishment can do! SMH My wife and I looked at each other and agreed the service being provided here is horrible. We left and celebrated our Wedding Anniversary elsewhere. The Experience I encountered at this restaurant is very disappointing, the absolute worse! The waitress kept repeating this statement to everyone.. "I am the Host, Server and Waitress and cannot do everything." That statement tells you this restaurant is understaffed and the waitress exhibiting her complaint is unprofessional. I am a Bixby Knolls resident and I believe in always supporting my local restaurants as a community. I tried giving this restaurant the benefit of the doubt but failed to provide descent customer service. They want you to pay for premium high-end dinners but cannot provide the service it deserves. The décor is old, and the ambiance is just not there. I am literally touching elbows with other patrons because of the seating arrangement this restaurant is providing. Overall, I do not recommend this place and don't wish anyone to ever experience what we went through. It may be descent to just walk into the bar and order a drink, if that but do no absolutely recommend celebrating a special gathering or event at this location. We ended up walking out and celebrated at a place called Spaghettini's in the city of Seal Beach. I highly recommend this place over the Phil Tranis. It's like night and day.
