It really saddens me to see what has become of 49'rs. Older people remember where the were when President Kennedy died, younger people remember the same about Michael Jackson. I sadly remember when God's Own Cheeseburger passed away. R.I.P. In the 'old' 49'rs, the two cooks were like SpongeBob(Matt) and Squidward(Sean) making Crabby Patties at The Crusty Crab. Since reopening, they didn't bring back Matt. Now it's like The Crusty Crab without SpongeBob. To add insult to injury, they're cooking their food on a hotplate, no BBQ. It's pitiful. $8.00 for a crappy burger? Yeh right. If you read the older reviews about how good the food was, it's history (as in history / gone / no more). They're saying they want to be like Joe Jost's, Hah! If I want Joe Jost's I'll drive down the street to Joe Jost's for colder, cheaper beer, better food, HELL, better everything. If I wanted to sit in a sorry ass excuse for it's former self and listen to the old guys piss and moan about politics, minorities or their bunions, this would be the place. Can't do it. read more

This burger made my day! What a find! After a crap-ass day at work and finding out that our alternate burger and beer plans (beachwood BBQ) had not panned out, we read some reviews and headed over. Once inside, we were pleased to see it relatively empty, with a few regulars hanging out and some gents behind the bar. Also damn pleased to see an IPA on draft- and in a frosty 20 oz schooner for 5.50. We ordered a bacon burger and a pendejo burger. Both were juicy, moist and well seasoned. The bacon burger was topped with lettuce, cheddar cheese, onions, tomato, and some delicious mayo-based sauce. The pendejo- muy caliente indeed! Same patty topped with the veggie fixins- but with Jalapeno jack, ortega chile and some sort of hot sauce. My lips were a' burnin. Went perfect with an ice cold IPA. They were messy- I must have used close to 10 napkins. The service was great, jukebox was pretty good, too. Plus they gave us these cards where if you buy 5 burgers you get the 6th free. We are only in the LBC for another week, but we just might try and go for our free burgers. read more

For me, It takes a lot to be the 'best burger in town.' These burgers here, however... are pretty damn close! I had a special last time, a Patty Melt. It was good. I like their other burgers better. The regular cheeseburger is awesome. If you don't like garlic and onions though, you might not be a fan. Their jalapeno burger (I can't remember the actual name of it) is really good if you like spice! The only down side (and the reason I only gave 4 stars) is their food is a bit pricey, and they don't have fries! The bar itself is a pretty sweet dive bar! I am a huge fan of dive's in general, and this place did not disappoint! They have a decent selection of beers on tap, for being a small place. Heaps of good memories here, even though I didn't discover it until senior year at CSULB. It's the best kind of pub - Anchor Steam on tap, peanut shells all over the floor, old neon signs everywhere, a dusty (possibly anthrax laden) deer head watching over, 50 cent snooker, tons of local color, and (til recently) even Borax soap. You talk with people here. You drink a cheap schooner of ACME here. You watch the game, gorge on peanuts or a burger, and ya dont worry about it. It's a den - no wonder Gerry Locklin and Charles Bukowski use to hole up here. There's no cover, there's no pretension and, at the moment, there's no dubstep. So many nights with my international house roommates wasted at Beach Club and PJ's- why didnt we find out about the 49'er til it was almost too late? Doesnt matter, cos I've been enjoying the hell out of it lately. Saturday nights, it's a sure thing. No bros like in HB. Nothing sketchy like 4th st. And nothing lame like 2nd. Found this place on Yelp, which has never disappointed so far. But this time I walked in, hesitated, and thought.... I don't know about this place..... I actually contemplated walking out. We were primarily going for burgers, not drinks, and when I saw that they don't have a kitchen I came really close to leaving. We were so hungry though, and wanted to trust in my fellow yelpers. I am so glad we stayed. Seriously, one of the best burgers I've ever had! The meat was great, flavor and combinations of toppings are awesome, it was just a great burger all around! I had the pendejo burger and my man had the bacon cheeseburger. They were both amazing. I was disappointed that there were no fries on the menu, they only serve with potato chips. But when the meals came out and we ate, it really was the perfect combination! I wouldn't change a thing. Also, have to mention the awesome selection of beers and super reasonable prices on everything! The only complaint I have about this place is the first time we went there the music was WAY too loud, which really irritated me. But the other times it has been fine. I went here a few months ago with my best friend for a wrestling event at the pyramid. We decided to grab a few drinks to event and upon entering, we had eyes all over us. The bartender didn't seem very friendly and upon ordering our drinks, he seemed he didn't want to serve us. He basically told us to go to another bar. The vibe was unwelcoming and we felt we was being discriminated because of our race. The vibe felt very MAGA. I just finished eating here not more than 10 minutes ago, and I'm Yelping right away so that I don't forget what an awful experience this was. Prior to going, I had contemplated buying a $25 gift certificate for $10 from www.restaurant.com for this place, and I am so glad that I didn't! Please don't waste any of your money on this place like I did. First, let me claim that I love dive bars because they usually serve some of the finest food available. So my girlfriend and I were in the mood for a good burger, and when we read the reviews of the hamburgers at the 49'ers, we thought we would give it a try. The www.restaurant.com ad for the 49'rs Tavern claims the following: "Excellent burgers(1), great service(3) and ice cold beer(2)." (1) The burger was tasty and dripping with grease, but that's OK because I would say this place is equivalent to the proverbial "greasy spoon joint." My regular bun was soaked through when half-way done, and my girlfriend's sourdough was a little more resistant because of the grilled outer surface. If grease = good, then this place should be your favorite. (2) The beer was cold, but what kind of a place does not have lemons for their Hefeweizen and limes for their Corona? For this reason, I will never be back to this place for just a beer on a hot afternoon. (3) The service was really the worst part of my experience. We were there on a Saturday night starting at around 7:15pm, and meandered our way through the pool tables to find the bar and eating area. It was not crowded. We sat down thinking we would get served, but then a bartendress sitting behind the bar asked if we wanted anything to drink. After finding out about their "no lemon" law, I ordered a schooner of something cold and asked if she would take our food order here at the bar, and she said that she could come to our table. So I walked 5' back to our table with our beverages, and she came from behind the bar to take our 2-burger order. She never visited the table again! Our burgers were served to us by the same person who cooked them, and then he promptly walked away. We waited for the waitress to offer us condiments (ketchup, mustard, etc.) or another drink or ask how our meal was, but this was our impossible dream for the evening. My girlfriend finally went up, bothered the bartender where she sat behind the bar, and asked for a Coke and a water which she had to bring back herself to the table. After we were finished and some of her 5 regulars sitting at the bar left or went outside to have a smoke, she finally looked over at our table, and upon eyeing my empty schooner, asked if I wanted another beer. No thanks! I would rather have a hot poker stuck through my eye than have to endeavor the poorest service in Long Beach one more minute! If an owner/manager reads this, the bartender was a cute, petite dark-haired girl with a dark complexion and her hair done in pigtails. She should be fired or demoted to dishwasher. If you do retain her services, make sure she has some place to sit to do her new job because this is what she does best! And if you are reading this and you are one of this girl's regulars, make sure you give her some extra tips because you're the only ones who will be doing so soon. read more

By far the newest, cleanest, and hip bar in long beach! UNDER TOTALLY NEW OWNERS! The new owner and his wife are the beyond generous it's crazy! I'm in here all the time because not only do they have reasonably priced drinks but you get that local bar feel! I go to CSU Long Beach and I will never stop coming here. The owner buys us free games of pool everytime we come! Literally every time! He always talks to us and remember all of my friends names. And can I say the new bartenders?!?!? Best burgers in Long Beach? Not hardly. All of their food is prepared outside on a grill, and while my burger had a promising amount of delicious char, it was fairly overdone and a consistent grey color throughout. Perhaps this was a fluke, and normally they cook their burgers more on the medium side of the spectrum, but I have a feeling that the over-done-ness of this burger was due to the fact that they don't have a kitchen and therefore must nuke food to prevent it from making you sick. Also, the lack of fries is a real bummer, and for a bar that only serves beer and wine, their beer selection was limited to the usual crappy American beers and a few bottled imports, as well as Newcastle on tap. Don't get me wrong, after some beer, even a overdone charred burger tastes pretty damn fantastic, and beats out a flat grill burger any day. You have to try the burgers here. I don't quite understand how a dive bar of this magnitude can produce the burgers that they do, but these are probably the best burgers I've ever had. The tavern itself is a standard dive bar with sawdust on the floor, pool tables and benches. There is no kitchen that I can see. I never stepped into this place in all of my years as a forty-niner. I guess I just kind of dismissed this place as a shitty frat bar. I'm not sure why or how we ended up here one night, but I was so off the mark. D ordered the Jesus Burger and I had the corned beef sandwich. It's rare when I like his dish more than mine, but I wanted to trade my dish with his as soon as I had a bite of that juicy burger. I should have known. If it's good enough for Jesus, it has got to be pretty damn good. Jesus knows his burgers. The waitress was really sweet and attentive despite the fact that she was doing it all that night (grilling the burgers, serving the drinks and food, and cleaning up). I was seriously shocked when I got home from work after having asked my dude to please find us a place in our new 'hood to get burgers and he told me that the 49'rs tavern not only supposedly had great burgers, but over 100 reviews on yelp with 4 stars. We've driven by often and the place looks like the sort you'd pop in to for a shameful afternoon whiskey - not a delish burger. I love a good dive bar, though, so I quickly changed out of my grown-up work clothes and we headed over. The little parking lot in front was basically empty at 7pm on a Tuesday night, as was the bar. We grabbed seats at the bar, ordered a pitcher of Newcastle and took a quick look at the menu to select our burgers. I absolutely cannot stand thousand island dressing (I don't want to hear it burger people - to each their own!), so my choice of burgers was limited if I didn't want to do the whole no sauce/please put ketchup and mustard instead request that I do at In-n-Out, so I chose the Redneck (cheddar & BBQ sauce) and my guy opted for a hot dog with a bunch of stuff on it ( I can't recall which, I wasn't really paying attention). Our food came out just as we were finishing our pitcher of beer, so we ordered another to go with our food and started eating. My burger was good. Not the best I've ever had (Elliot Bay Brewery in West Seattle still keeps that award for now), but comparable to a good burger you would make at home if you know how to make a decent burger. The fact they cook them on a grill outside is pretty cool, but the bland packaged buns, under ripe tomatoes and huge chunk of iceberg lettuce could be improved on. For a super cheap burger at a bar that is just the right amount of divey though, it was awesome. I absolutely wouldn't hesitate to order one again if I found myself drinking at this spot and getting a little hungry. The atmosphere was also just right for the majority of our time at the bar. There wasn't loud music, just the TV behind the bar playing at a reasonable volume. A little while later, the TVs got muted and they started playing super LOUD music, which we took as our signal to head out as it was difficult to maintain a conversation. 2 pitchers of beer and our food came to just under $40, so it was definitely a bargain! read more

Don't get me wrong, the burger is solid... but maybe I have a different evaluation grade, coming from Iowa. The burger is cooked outside on a grill, which is a plus... but doesn't really "wow" you when you take a bite. Great place for an ice cold beer and one of the best burgers in town! Went through a recent remodel and it really changed the place for the better. Although those years are fuzzy, I do remember a hamburger, a pitcher of beer and a pool table one Football Sunday afternoon. Now that I am all grown up and pass this place going to and from work everyday, it was time to revisit my dear 49er with a clear (and open) mind. It was Wednesday night and $4.75 God's Burger Night so what the heck, let's get cheap eats and cheap drinks! We walk in and it's just how I remember, DARK! Some "mood" lighting if you will, and some wagon wheels on the walls. I love this little dirty bar! (note: dirty little bar is a compliment in this case). TVs everywhere, a jukebox, pool tables, pinball, and hubby loves how he can throw peanut shells on the ground (it's the little things in life people!). It was pretty full for a Wednesday night but we found a little table in front of a few TVs; one with the Lakers and the other with the Ducks. All right! We all decide on the God's Burger and a few beers. I gotta tell ya, it's a damn good burger, it's a damn good price and we had damn great service. There were 5 of us, 5 burgers, 2 pitchers of beer (some micro-brew) and a few pints of Black and Tan for the picky one in the group (me). The bill was just over $50. You can't beat it. The burger may not be the best in LB, but it's worthy and it's original. It's got a bite to it due to the garlic baste, yum. And really, how many places have you been where the bartender keeps making trips outside to check on your burger? This is a dark corner bar I've driven by but never had any desire to visit. I think it might be a college spot being so close to Cal State LB. Who cares?!! The story is that they used to serve food, they stopped, and then they started again (at least what I was told). It doesn't matter really, if you want a killer burger, please find your way here and ignore the "looks" inside and out. There's a tiny space for the cook to store hamburger buns, toaster oven and the like. You make your order at the bar and the cook disappears outside to BBQ your burger "LIVE". We split a Bacon Burger and WOW it was simple yet amazing. Just all the right components (which is usually what makes your best burger), soft bun, grilled burger, Worchestershire, garlic, mayo, yay yay yay!! This is one of those "best kept secrets" that might get found out, and then the one guy with 1 bbq grill will not be enough to keep up with the crowd and then they'll quit altogether. Hey, wait! Maybe that is what happened before?! Pure speculation. They don't serve fries. Hell, where would they fry-thy-fry? There is no kitchen, just a small counter dammit! It does not matter. This is the best burger I've had in a long time and you can see by my reviews that I was pointed (by yelpsters) to Volcano Burgers because they had that "grilled taste". I wasn't impressed. 49rs Tavern IS a grilled burger, on a goddamm grill! Outside no less! Bobby Flay thinks he is BBQ king? No way! The guy BBQ'in at this place IS what Bobby Flay PRETENDs to be. I say go for the Bacon Burger (if you like BBQ-ish smoky burgers) or do whatever - they also make a mean chicken sandwich from what I've heard. 20 oz Scooners of Newcastle are $5.50. Bring your belly ready for some bbq lovin'. UPDATE 12/2007 ::: If I could give 49'rs 10 stars I would. New local owners John and Lance are amazing and so friendly! My boyfriend and I heard it had new owners now so we decided to stop by and check it out. Wow! Night and day difference from the run down place that I stopped going to! They shut down for 3-4 months and completely cleaned the place up. Great vibe and absolutely amazing burgers! The back patio feels like a back yard bbq at home where you want to stay and hang out. I haven't been in this area in some time, but was aching for a good burger last night. Oooohhh and did I get lucky--their God's own burger (swiss cheeseburger) is only $4.25 on Wednesdays! How awesome is that? Well, let me tell you--the burger is better than I remembered. It's not just a generic grilled burger (not saying that those aren't rather tasty anyway) but their burger is full of flavor. You really do taste the garlic in every bite--heaven. Oh and the girl behind the bar (i forgot her name!)--she's awesome! Everything came out so quickly and she brought me a refill on my diet coke before I was even half way through. Went to 49'rs last night for the Cowboys/Packers game and it was PACKED. Apparently not all game nights are as packed but this specific game wasn't shown on a lot of cable networks I guess. $3 PBR special which I guess they have all the time (they ran out of schooners and just served in plastic instead which wasn't quite as much as a schooner but oh well)! AMAZING Pendajo Burger...relleno chili, pepper jack cheese, attitude sauce (spicy mustard) and a hot pepper on the side....absolutely mouth watering. I LOVE ketchup on burgers and I didn't even THINK about it. The crowd's pretty young but everyone (both sides of fans) got along and joked around with everyone so that was awesome! A good mix of people! I will definitely return! Had an event here recently and have to say I'm not impressed. The outside is very divy dumpy looking. The parking lot is small. The inside is rather small and very divy. If that's your thing, then great. Not against it myself but just not worth going out of my way to come here. Also, a mug of beer was $7. Now that's downright expensive. I got to try nachos which were actually pretty good as they came with 3 different sauces but that's about it. Not bad but $7 mug of beer tripped me out. read more

49ers long beach style.... Quality: Local old style bar. Operated by college aged workers. Didn't eat here so cant really comment on the food. Quantity: I just had their beer on tab and their free roasted peanuts... yummy Price: They sell pitchers for cheap. I forget the price but it was surprisingly priced well. Atmosphere: Cozy little place. The picture on this site s pretty much the place. Has a bar area with a row of stools and a couple of bench tables. There is a back room for pool and darts. In the bar area they have about 3-4 flat screen of worthy size. The people are locals and more youthful that joe's jost. Overall: I came in thinking this was a San Francisco 49er's chapter and but was corrected that it was the long beach miners. But I enjoyed watching my chargers play and would come again when I wanna walk to watch some sports. read more

I went to this bar on Saturday because we happened to notice the name of it as we were driving by and had to stop in for a beer. We parked in the small parking lot that they share with a head shop that's right next door which is convenient if you smoke. Once inside, I noticed there was a group of 4 that were drinking at the bar and enjoying the music that was playing so we decided to sit nearest the pool tables so we can drink and play. The pool tables are free to play which is a huge plus in my books because they can range from $.50 - $1.00 a game and we ended up playing about 4 games. The group of 4 decided they wanted to play pool which is all right if the bar had enough pool sticks for both pool tables and I didn't have to share mine. We ordered a few pitchers which is another big plus in my books because not a lot of bars sell pitchers. The bar has a jukebox that was playing with some pretty good music, they have 2 pool tables with not enough sticks for all to use, there is absolutely no 49er memorabilia which really threw me off because it seemed a little Irish bar. The bar does not seem to get too crowded especially on a Saturday night so we decided to go to another bar much closer to where we live so we left around 10pm but got closer to Lomita and noticed that my partner had left her phone at the bar. We called the bar starting at 1045pm to see if the phone was there but no one answered the phone so we drove there only to find the bar closes at 11pm which is very early for a bar to close on a Saturday night. We noticed that the big screen T.Vs on the wall were still on meaning someone must still be inside working so we knocked on the door and the windows and a couple minutes passed when someone finally opened the door and handed her iphone. My wife and I found this place thru yelp and we don't regret it. The burgers here are awesome. My last burger here was the Triple Bypass w/ bacon and 'tude sauce instead of the dressing. Even Chris, the owner, was impressed by that one. The burgers are grilled, not fried, and basted with butter, garlic and worchestershire sauce. I always end up inhaling it so fast that I want another one before my stomach registers that I am full. Insider tip: try a K-dog. It's not on the menu but they will make it if you ask. Great dog on really good bread with cheese and other goodies. Not like any other dog you've had. We always have to bring one home to my mother-in-law. The only thing that I'm not a fan of is the cash-only payment. Yes there is an ATM with a serious service charge but I'd rather give that money in tips. All in all this is cool place to get a great burger. We usually go during the day and miss the crowds so parking has never been an issue for us. Go get this burger! read more

Reminds me of what bars were like in a small town when I lived in Louisiana. Theres a lot of wood, old stuff everywhere, and its awkwardly shaped. I only stopped by for a company meet up my wife had and enjoyed 2 beers and called it a night. Thanks for the unintentional trip down memory lane. I came by during LB grand prix before the bar was apparently shut down for vermin. The bartender (south african golfer) who was definitely drunk and high as can be was hanging out on the porch smoking cigarettes and ignoring the 3 people in the bar. I was there with a buddy to have a beer and smoke some cigars on the porch and when i looked into the restaurant through the glass doors a couple times saw more rats running around the bar than customers. They had no beers on tap and only a couple bottles in the fridge. Sad because it was a good hangout. I hope they reopen and become what a long beach dive bar could be! read more

Moved to Long Beach not too long ago and stumbled upon 49ers. I love this place so much, customer service has always been great the ladies are always so welcoming And sweet, very chill laid back/ friendly welcoming vibe! After 4 yrs of driving by here and a few good comments from fellow yelpers, I finally decided to give it a whirl. Who knew a place like that could dish out such a tasty burger? I was on a HUGE burger fix yesterday, and saw that this place was supposed to have some tasty meat patties. OH MAN. YES. YES THEY DO. I got the bacon cheeseburger with barbeque sauce added, and my buddy got God's own burger. Jeez, that stuff is wonderful! I felt like such a manly man- sitting there, eating my delicious manly burger, drinking my manly Newcastle, watching manly extreme sports on the manly flatscreen TV. MANLY.
