I have been to a lot of 5.11 stores in California and the employees are always helpful and…read morefriendly. Additionally, most of the selection is the same with a few differences. One of the differences as opposed to California is that they carry Stiletto Knives, Also Known As CIA Gravity Knives. They are approximately 4.5 inches long and the blade deploys and retracts from the grip using a dual throw (Forward and Back) button or switch. Very cool! Don't worry California, I did not buy one, as cool as they are. Yup, all of the fun stuff is illegal in California, like butterfly knives, Stilettos and firearms with the "Fun Button" (Safe-Semi-Auto) on them. Sigh! One light at the end of the tunnel was "Jerry". Be nice to Jerry, he is a cool guy but if you get on his nerves, that's on you. All I can say is that he has seen some stuff and he may be the definition of "F" around and find out. Jerry is very knowledgeable and he pointed my nephew in the direction of the perfect tactical backpack, among other accessories and toys that will compliment his new career in federal law enforcement. I did not buy much, except for a memorable patch. I get one from each 5.11 I visit, just to say "Been there, my dude!" Overall, it is a large store with a lot of selection. If you are looking for some discounted or marked down winter ware, now is the time to check it out. I found a neat jacket, however I live in the Sweltering Summer portion of California and triple digit temperatures are less than a month away. So, I passed on the jacket. However, if you are Military, Law Enforcement, EMS, Fire Department, Practical Pistol Shooter, Multi-Platform (Pistol & Long Gun) competitor, or a First Responder of any kind and you need boots, pants, "Shorts", a tactical carrier (No Ballistic Plates are sold here, to my knowledge), morale patches, a quick snap tourniquet or some gym attire,... Talk to Jerry! Heck I would go back just to chew the fat with Jerry again. Be safe, everyone!

Hooray for the local guy!…read more Kirkham's has always been one of my favorite outdoors stops, and there are some pretty compelling reasons why. First of all, they employ people who are passionate about the outdoors and who, generally speaking, know what they are talking about. There's no push for corporate outdoorsness--I've often felt like I was chatting with a buddy when talking things over with their staff. Second, I like the location. Just off of State Street near the 33rd South exit of I-15. Nice. Third, they carry some quality stuff. The lightweight, high-quality, not El Cheapo stuff is their specialty, and they do it well. Lots of it is set up or out for display so you can get a good look at what you're after. The biggest reason I'm a fan is those Springbar tents. If you're not familiar, a Springbar tent is the greatest family/Scout troop/group tent known to man. They're immortal. They're super easy to set up. They weigh about a half a ton, but they're a tent you buy and pass down to your kids. For real. A few other bonus features: they have a decent selection of climbing gear, they have a tent repair area, they have random tent material (seam sealer, no-see-um mesh, tent stakes, etc.) and a nice book and map selection. Also, I dig the dog hiking gear and the clothing sections.

It's the support of the local community, and the wonderful repair department that keeps this at…read morefour stars. Online sales has to have killed them. It's also possible we no longer have the same numbers of people who actually backpack, and do backcountry activities, and want quality gear. I don't know. I've been coming here for 30+ years. I've spent many thousands of dollars. I don't go much anymore, so the dramatic decline in stock threw me off. For me, it's because I bought the kind of gear in my 20's and 30's that will last forever, and I'm in my 60's now. I have a reason not to do so much backpacking. In the day, the aisles were narrow and the place was filled to overflowing with everything. They had the regular brands, but they had nearly every one of the esoteric, specialty brands too. Today, outside of North Face, nothing in quality sleeping bags. It looks like a place heading out of business. I was there to look for shirts. In the day, they had as much nice outdoor styled clothing as you find total clothing in the big box store. There just wasn't much to choose from today. Walking around you could see the empty walls that held shoes, boots, and similar. I'm so sad. I assume there will always be a market for the car camping gear that Springbar tent owners are going to need. The Springbar tents are great. I don't own one, although I bought both my backpacking and car camping tents there.

I get that there is no public restroom, but not very sympathetic response when directed to cart my 3 year old to another store just to come back and ask for help (which I wasn't getting in the first place). Good reminder why I shop online. Able to come home and buy the items on Amazon much easier, quicker and cheaper. Wanted help and to support brick and mortar, but didn't feel supported as a solo parent trying to buy sports gear for my son.

Finally some good customer service at a Big 5 Sporting Goods Store…read more I came in to find out if they had any hiking boots that would suit my needs, and weren't to expensive, but were of good quality. Angel asked right away if he could help me. I told him what I was looking for,. He was very patient with me. Since the store is set up that the sales associate has to go in the back to pull the shoes/boots from inventory. I put a lot of miles on Angel today. I think I tried on every possible hiking boot that they had available. The answer was always nope this one isn't going to work for some reason or another, mostly due to comfort. I was about to walk out again defeated when he said "Why don't you try these Bearpaws they look similar to the boots you have on." I said "Sure, let's give it a whirl." He came back empty handed saying they didn't have my size in stock. He quickly added that he could see if another store, in the valley, had my size, and he could have the boots transferred to that store. He called around, the store in West Valley had my size. He said I could drive all the way across town, or I could come back when they transferred. I opted to come back. I didn't want to drive across town, in traffic, to try on a pair of boots that I wasn't sure would fit me or not. He said it would take around 10 days. Just to come across town...ummm ok. I wasn't in a rush so it was ok I would have to have to wait. Angel was so helpful in this seamless process. I was also able to find a new hiking pack similar to the one I've used for years. It was a disappointment that they didn't carry the same style, but that isn't Angels fault, and the pack was similar enough that I'm sure I will enjoy it just as much. Fast forward a few days later my boots were in to pick up. That's faster than the 10 days I was told. I told them I would be by on the weekend to pick them up, well actually to try them on to see if I liked them. The next day someone else called to tell me my boots were in, I told them I had already spoken to someone, and I would be by this weekend. So the weekend came, and again I went hiking in my old boots. I stopped by to check out these Bearpaw boots. What a difference a week makes when it comes to customer service. I had to ask for help. I asked if Angel was there, and they said he had the day off. I told them what I was there for, and the two sales associates at the counter looked at each other like "what is she talking about". Someone found the boots, and handed them to me...and I was left on my own. After trying them on, I decided to buy them, and try them out. They were similar to the ones I already own, and hoped for the best. The cashier surely wasn't friendly when she rang up my purchase, which is the case with most Big 5's. Big 5's are a lower end discounted sporting goods store with a self serve vibe. When you shop here you know what you're getting or you should.
