It wasn't overly cornmealish like some of these "authentic" Chicago pizza places. I grew up out here in the west, so I'm used to a more flaky light crust. My first Deep Dish Chicago pizza was Zachary's in Berkeley in the Bay Area. This Costa Mesa location is located just south of the 405 at Harbor Blvd. Go to Baker Street and turn left and it's right there. Easy Parking. One thing you gotta know about the deep dish pizzas, they take longer to cook cause they're just so big and need more cooking time, like maybe 35-40 minutes, depending on how busy the kitchen is. We get a classic combo pizza and have some drinks while we wait. It arrives and oh boy does that look good. Dishing it out takes a little practice, but we're good at that now! Everybody loves the flavor and crust. This isn't the cheapest pizza round, but well worth the price and wait. You want cheap go to Straw Hat or something like that.

The decor was street style but simple. The staff was so welcoming and attentive. They answered our questions and regularly checked on my boyfriend and I. We tried the buffalo wings while we waited for the pizza. They were perfectly cooked and sauced. Paired with their own ranch, so delicious! We did the traditional 9" pan pizza with only pepperoni. (You just have to keep in mind, the pizzas take approximately 45 min.) The sauce to cheese to toppings ratio was perfect. The cheese pull was soooooo good! I normally don't like crust, and I ate mine here! Pizza so good, you don't need ranch! I tried an Ube beer. And surprisingly, it was so tasty and refreshing! It had white alba clamshell mushrooms, wild arugula, black truffle, and pecorino romano. They could have done a lighter hand on the salt. The ahi tuna was one of the specials and it sounded good with the avocado mousse and tangerine slices. It was fresh, zesty, and bright. The crème brûlée' was a nice finish for our meal. We end up having to wait 20 min to get seated. Crazy when it was just a reservation for 2. They didn't offer anything like a complimentary drink to make it better. Next, to the meal. We ordered the 58oz Cowboy Ribeye. I honestly think I could have made a better steak at home. Absolutely no crust in the outside. Not that well seasoned. The meat was good quality but they butchered the execution. Insane a steakhouse could make such a bad steak honestly. Not worth the price. Okay and then there were the sides. The lobster Mac n Cheese was the only reason this wasn't a 1 star meal. That was honestly fantastic. I am a fair critic. Credit where credit is due. Back in March, I noticed when you walk in, the whole right side had a big section of popular Taiwanese souvenirs like Taiyang Tang sun cakes and Chia Te pineapple cakes. On the left side, they even had Taiwanese oil noodles, which I don't usually see at Vietnamese markets, so I grabbed a pack. I'm so used to shopping at Vietnamese supermarkets now. Mostly because around where I live, if you're looking for Asian groceries, it's usually either Korean markets like H Mart or Vietnamese supermarkets, so that's kind of become my baseline. Vietnamese markets are usually cheaper, but if you're specifically looking for Taiwanese products, the selection is pretty limited. Same with H Mart, they have some but not a lot. If you want the widest selection of Taiwanese items, 99 Ranch is honestly still the most reliable option. Prices do feel a bit higher overall compared to what I'm used to, but the variety and convenience are hard to beat.
