Went here to hang out with friends on a Sunday mid-day and watch football. Food was good. Peter was incredibly friendly. He brought us some mai tais to split and share amongst all of us. He was very helpful with the menu and a few special orders. We noticed the signs that this is the second generation of "The Silver Palace" which was in Montclair when we moved here, so we thought we would come in. Will definitely be back. read more

Garlic noodles were good too would prefer not to have to order a protein with it an just get more noodles or add cabbage or more veg, but taste great. Second generation Silver Palace, this place use to be a staple in the village, glad to see something reminiscent coming back, I assume it is the same family that owned the silver palace and they are very friendly and attentive. We got the green onion pancakes, shanghai soup dumplings and the special Peking duck, all of which was delicious especially the green onion pancakes and duck. We will definitely be back, and hopefully they will have their liquor license soon (they've applied and are waiting) We also got one of the teas and it was a great end to the meal. read more

I was in the mood for chicken lettuce cups and it was delicious (even though I prefer iceberg lettuce for wraps). They use romaine. I'm so glad this restaurant is in our neighborhood. We're always satisfied with our delivery orders. Most recent orders and reviews: Pork and cabbage Potstickers: 5 stars. I used to think Uncle Yu's were the best but these are better - thinner wrapper and better flavored filling. Sweet coconut prawns: 5 stars. Delicious plump shrimp in a tasty sauce. Kitchen sink fried rice: 5 stars. A meal in itself, with plump shrimp, BBQ pork, and chicken all mixed together with egg and everything else. Roasted garlic eggplant and string beans: 3 stars. Nothing special. ON Fire Chicken: 3 stars. This was just way too salty. I do miss the flaky roti and dipping sauce that used to be on the menu. It was delicious. Bring it back please! I've eaten here twice now, both times take out. The Mongolian beef was pretty good. I would order it again. However, the salt and pepper wings were lacking salt and pepper. They were actually quite bland, not what I was expecting. The dumplings were, good but not great. Perhaps I need to have them when they're just cooked. Went on Christmas Day. Thank you for being open as sometimes there maybe a tragedy in the family that makes avoiding the holiday a healthy choice. So wow. What great food. Everything was delicious from a special crispy shrimp with coleslaw bao bun to garlic chicken and green beans to sweet and sour fish. My mouth is still watering. We offered the leftovers to our relative out of kindness but now need to go back. What a gem of a resto and the service is great. Piping hot yummy creations with all different sauces come out quickly. Mai Tai was the bomb By the way too. Come here if you haven't yet. Before tonight we've only had take out and thought every dish was good. Tonight was a birthday celebration with a group big enough for a round table with a lazy Suzan. Fun atmosphere, wonderfully attentive service, and every dish was delicious! Had a shrimp with slaw appetizer that was yummy, the roast pork surprised me and was a table favorite, green beans and eggplant were great, chow fun yum too, and the best dish was featured I think chicken in garlic sauce and white meat chicken was so moist and tender. We LOVE this restaurant so much. The fast and polite service, delicious food and decor is all on point. It has become our new go-to for a date night. The only thing I can think to recommend would be that I think it would be really nice touch if there was some traditional music playing in the background. We love this addition to the neighborhood! We get their dumplings often, and highly recommend the pork and chive dumplings, as well as the fire cracker wontons. Tonight we got the "on fire" chicken, which is truly as spicy as it sounds and very addicting, as well as the lettuce wraps, which are a favorite. The takeout was not wrapped properly, and it was instead placed in an empty hot house, vegetable box with holes in the bottom of it, and because the container of food was soupy and so full it leaked through the bottom of the box and got all over the inside of my car. Stopped by for lunch and there was plenty of seating. You can order from the full menu or they have a lunch specials menu. Only beer and wine available during lunch and we split a beer and the server didn't even blink at that request. The service is friendly and efficiant and I was glad to see a steady stream of people seated. We stuck with the main menu and ordered the Big Boss Fried Rice and the Crispy Salmon Seaweed Rolls. The Big Boss lived up to it's name and easily fed us both. They did not skimp on the shrimp and it was crazy flavorful, we could not stop eating it. The Salmon Rolls were very small, kind of the size of your thumb, and not really worth the pricepoint. That said, there is so much to try on the menu, I can't wait to go back. read more

I have enjoyed delicious meals, which are also a great value, since this restaurant opened. The owner, Shirleen, treats you like family. Several weeks ago, I celebrated my birthday here with 25 friends. Once again the service was fantastic and the food was delicious. We did arrange a menu ahead of time, so that we can all enjoy a variety of dishes. The staff was wonderful as they kept the hot food coming, and yet we never felt rushed. In addition, they graciously allowed us to bring our own birthday cake which they cut and plated for us. The atmosphere is warm and inviting. I look forward to my next visit. I cannot believe these guys have 4.5 stars. Huh? Why would you open a mediocre concept in such a tough market? You realize shitty businesses died in the pandemic. Only pros can make it in this day and age. These guys can't even get onto the field. These people have no idea how to run a restaurant. Maybe togo yes, but a sit down establishment with a bar and customer service? Bad look for Montclair. You guys gotta get a lesson in hospitality and bartending. 1. I sit down with my girl at the bar. Order two drinks and three apps. Bartender/MOD tells us she gotta make the drink first then put in our food! What!? Weird. Dumb and illogical. 2. So you makes my drink wrong. But I don't say nothing. Then we wait for our food. And wait. We see a couple of Togo boxes sitting on the bar forever. We ask where our food is. Home girl says it just came up and its for Togo. Au contraire mon frere. We ordered for here. She says we didn't. She blamed us for not communicating. Again, illogical and now, hostile. Turns out this lady is the boss. Yikes. 3. Proceeds to serve us food from the Togo container that's been sitting there for awhile. In the paper Togo container. Not on plate ware. Yikes. Nó bueno. Sorry Charlie. Strike three. We just ask for our bill to bounce. She still tries to blame us for not communicating to here. Just horrible. Obviously has never worked in any sort of fine dining or even good dining establishment. Sux. This place has had a carousel of bad operators forever. I think it needs an exorcism or straight up fire sale. I'll be taking my business elsewhere. I think 5 Spice Kitchen should as well. 12/9/22 This place currently has 4 1/2 stars. You know already what my score is. So, let's just put it this way: if you always get fried rice when you get Chinese, and there's always some kind of stir-fried beef, and once in a while splurging means to you walnut fried shrimp, and being adventurous means trying some pork dish....... feel free to pass on by. 4.5 stars. You'll like this place. The people seem nice. It's a big restaurant. Plenty of seats (it was completely empty when we came Fri at 1:30pm). Have at it. ......... for everyone else....... it's a cold cold cold place. No heaters this early December. So cold that even while wearing my winter wear, my feet were numb by the time I left, and my ankles were just starting to succumb. I do feel a little bad--the staff was pretty nice, even offering candy to my little man, but, the truth must always be known... Yes, it's blatantly obvious as soon as you walk in that this is not a Chinese restaurant (despite all the staff speaking Mandarin to each other). We almost walked right back out while standing at the front, but someone came right as we were turning around, and the rest was history... 1. Shanghai Soup Dumplings $10: --------LOOK HERE-------- They used machine made XLB's. I've NEVER seen this before in a restaurant. I cannot imagine any restaurant daring to do this. How do I know for sure?--well, the sealing crimps you'd normally squeeze by hand, those were STAMPED. Have you ever seen a Chinese mom/granny take a stamp and push on the dough with it? Exactly. Now.... could they have a machine in their kitchen?--maybe I guess. I dunno how much volume you'd have to do to justify buying such a thing, but I bet it's expensive. So, my guess is they just bought some mass produced frozen product and sold it. Well, okay so they're machine made, but what if they taste good? Let me just answer it this way... would you mind eating supermarket frozen pizza at a restaurant?--well, that's how these tasted. 1/10 2. Ocean Dumplings $12: Every year for the mid-autumn festival we have a big party at our house and have everyone fold dumplings with us together. And it's always super easy to tell who made which dumplings. My gf's of course always was perfectly consistent, half moon shaped, perfect crimping at even intervals all the way around, no breakage, no leakage of raw meat stuffing, etc., and that perfect curl making it into like a cute sitting seat cushion. Me on the other hand--like Chinese empanadas (NO, this is NOT how they should look!, haha.) So.... imagine dumplings being made by me, but each one a different size, some 1/2 moon, some 1/3rd moon, some 5/8ths moon, some.......... BROKEN, LEAKING, spilling their guts.... OH, and those guts.... 1/2 glass noodles. The rest, some kind of meat, but I dunno what I was eating. Easy 1/10. WORST BOILED DUMPLINGS I'VE EVER EVER EVER had at a restaurant. Period. (Ironically, I'm 100% sure these were not machine-made.) 1/10 3. Twice Cooked Pork Belly $18: This actually was not bad. It's kinda homemade-feeling. My gf would make it this way at home, well, probably a bit better, but I ain't knocking this version. 6/10 4. Szechuan Pork Noodles $16: As you'd expect, this is not Szechuan except for the use of red peppers. For one, it's sweet. That's clearly tailoring to non-Chinese eaters. Secondly, there's no red chili oil to be found--and there's ALWAYS that in Szechuan noodles. That said, it didn't taste bad. Just not Szechuan. 4/10 5. Brown Rice $3: At first I thought.... oh wow, maybe they made at least the rice pretty good. Nice and nutty, distinct kernels, not mushy. If you read my reviews, you know I really care about the rice. Welp.... after the first few bites I hit a hard clump. Then another. Turns out 70% of the bowl was not edible. 1/10 They can't cook rice. They serve machine-made XLB's. They make boiled dumplings worse than me (meaning worse than the worst of our family, worse than all my friends folding at my party, worse than my friend's dog............ okay, kidding, dog just looked on....) We had dinner here a while back (Nov 2022). We usually venture to Chinatown or International area for good Chinese, but we're happy that we have the opportunity to get Chinese food in the village. Many of the chefs here were actually chefs at restaurants in Chinatown. My feedback to the owners would be around making more authentic dishes and flavors. Additionally, using better quality noodles for the bang bang noodles (would expect bang bang noodles to be more chewy rather than knife cut) A good example of an elevated Chinese food restaurant would be Great China in Berkeley which I believe is a similar vibe to what the owners of 5 spice are trying to do. Another good example would be Tay Ho in Chinatown that does elevated Vietnamese without losing authenticity of the dishes. Happy to give this another try soon read more

I was excited to see a new Chinese restaurant in Montclair. However, the overall taste and quality of the food are disappointing. The veggie potstickers are soggy and bland. It has peas in the filling?!?! Strange. The onion pancakes are small and overcooked. What a disappointment. The noodles were bland. There is nothing memorable about it. The other two... salt and pepper salmon and eggplant were either too salty or sweet. We were really hoping for a better experience. Perhaps they will improve. read more

We've had the bbq pork buns (great), 5 spice crispy duck legs (yum!), shrimp dumplings (very good), dry braised string beans ( spicy but good), Shanghai greens (just ok), kitchen sink fried rice (awesome!). My first time here. Nice ambiance, really clean, polite and helpful service. My server, Bin speaks both Mandarin and Cantonese. I ordered chicken with green beans. Served with rice that was perfectly cooked, this dish was excellent. Just the right amount of garlic and onion... delicious. And they made it gluten-free, using gluten-free soy sauce. Very ample portions too. They have some nice teas, including oolong, ginseng, chrysanthemum, and others. Speaking of things to drink, there's a well stocked bar here and a creative cocktail menu. In fact, as I am eating my lunch here, a lady walked to reserve a few tables for cocktails later in the evening. This place strikes me a perfect spot to come for dinner and/or drinks with friends or for business. A very calm ambiance complete with ambient Chinese music. Classy place! read more
