While in Scottsboro for the April sales event on the square we decided finally go to 50 Taters for lunch. It was a great decision. The place was very busy but we were seated without much wait. The servers were awesome. They have a policy that all servers take care of all tables which works, period. Now comes the food. One had the hamburger steak with mushroom gravy and onions with corn fritters. The wife had the French dip sandwich with taters. (Baked potato, sliced and deep fried). I had the Cuban with the taters. The sandwiches were awesome to say the least and the potatoes were the best I've ever had. The corn fritters were real corn fritters with lots of corn, not just a few kernels with lots of breading. This restaurant has been placed in our top ten list for good family dining!! read more

12/27/19 I wanted to eat at a local BBQ joint. Thanks to Yelp I found 50 Taters. I was lucky to get the last available seat before a large crowd lined up for tables. The staff are super friendly. I like the way they all help eachother. I ordered the BBQ Pork. As a side I ordered a "tater" which counted as 2 sides. I thought I should order a tater since that is the restaurant's namesake. Since it was only 1 item I also ordered fried green tomatoes as an appetizer. (It was not on the menu but I saw it listed as a side on the chalkboard with one of the specials of the day.) My fried green tomatoes were fresh and fabulous. The BBQ pork was tender but I had to douse it with the tasty BBQ sauce on the table to add flavor and moisture. The tater was a simple baked potato. (not sure why this counts as 2 sides, but it was a good baked potato).If I went back I would probably order a different entree.However, the food was good, the service was nice, and the price was extremely reasonable. read more

We were in scottsboro shopping at unclaimed baggage and wanting somewhere to eat. Unsure where to go so we looked for local eats, might as well try something new right? Right! We decided on 50 Taters due to reviews, how the food looks and the price. I thought this was gonna be a cute little hole in the wall order at the cash register but nope! A quinte little cabin surprise when it's a seat yourself before dinner time with table service all day! We sat near the kitchen and the daily special window where we were quickly approached by our waitress whom was sweet and pleasent. Gave us just the right amount of time to figure out what we wanted and knowledgeable on the menu. A+ customer service as even the other workers came to ask if we needed a high chair and helped us if we asked for anything when our waitress was busy. I contemplated the salad bar but went with the brisket plate. Husband got the nana Cristo while our little 11 month old tried various items off our plate. When she grabbed the brisket or a little of hubby Nana Cristo meat and proceed to eat it happily... I knew the meat was perfect! And properly seasoned as this girl HATES meat. Overall the prices are wonderful for so much food, we left with dessert too and they deserve every piece of the tip I gave them. Thanks so much for the wonderful experience! I have been here only once. I had the "bama" cheesesteak. I figured when in Alabama why not! Its served open face, (flat) and it was ok. I always look around at the plates of other diners when possible and many of the plates looked better, however they are also higher in price. They have some interesting decor, like the Elvis, an old pay phone from the 50's, the old truck out front, and much more. There is also a huge metal gun out front. That I could have done without that but I guess it attracts the locals. If using GPS, most dont work well to find this place. It sits in a parking lot as a stand alone building and doesnt have a large sign. Once you leave the main "speed track" onto County Road, its right there on your left set back in the lot. My dish was average, but since what the others had looked better and some interesting decor I'll add a star. read more

We visited 50 Taters on a sort of pilgrimage to Unclaimed Baggage. I go with a friend every couple of years just for fun, and this time we were looking to grab lunch first. It's a decent spot, especially since there are limited options in Scottsboro. Serving mostly barbecue and American food, 50 Taters is spacious and well air conditioned. Our waitress was friendly enough and I have no particular gripes with the service or the cleanliness of the restaurant. The portion sizes are huge and fairly reasonably priced. My friends both got pulled pork sandwiches and fries; I opted for the pork potato. I tried a fry, too; it was good, very crispy, and fresh and hot. My potato was...just okay. Probably the worst barbecue baked potato I've ever had, honestly. It did NOT taste bad...it simply didn't live up to the likes of chains like Lawlers and Jim and Nick's, or to my favorite local-to-Huntsville spot, Boarhog's. That being said, it's hard not to enjoy pork, potato, sour cream, butter, and cheese. Sadly, the ratio of toppings to potato was off, and I didn't like how everything was in a huge pile on top of the potato; it made it hard to get a bite that incorporated all the ingredients. I know I probably sound nit-picky, but it's just how I am. My friends liked their pork sandwiches okay. All in all, it's not a bad spot and I'd consider returning if I was in the neighborhood; I wouldn't go out of my way if I wasn't. read more

This place is really yummy! It isn't the best bbq I have ever had but the bbq sauce was definitely in my top 3 favorites. My friend had the brisket platter with corn nuggets and I had the triple bypass sandwhich with a baked potato. The brisket was a little dry but the sandwhich was yummy! I smothered ot with bbq sauce since the sauce was sooooo delicious. The baked potato was lacking some toppings. Which they had bacon or chives on it but other than that it was good. The corn nuggets were pretty delicious as well!!! We tried their salted caramel cheesecake and that was heavenly. This is quite an interesting one of a kind unique place! Fun art and funny signs everywhere!! They offer a very delicious appetizer that is Fried Waffle Fries and Hot Caramel Sauce ! It sounds like it may not go together but, let me tell you it was impressive!!! It was the best tasting dish we ordered. Now I will warn you this place does have strange hours. Make sure you call ahead or look up their hours online. I cannot tell you how many times we have stopped by there trying to eat there and they were not open. I believe they close pretty early too. Excellent food and excellent service at a reasonable price. We stopped there to eat on our way home from the Tennessee Aquarium. I had the pork filled baked potato with a side of onion rings and my wife had the roast beef sandwich au jus, we washed it down with some of the best sweet tea I've had from a restaurant in a long time. This is the worst food I've ever eaten. The fried okra is NOT fried. It's breaded and boiled. Their medium steak is almost well done. You can't chew it. It's rubbery. And the hot fudge cake I got to go is horrible to say the least. I get home and it's squished inside a to go box that it doesn't fit in and the vanilla ice cream wont even melt. It's HOT fudge and it's been over half an hour and it's still not melted. The cake tastes like crap. The best thing is the hot fudge and they don't make that. So that tells you. Only older people like their food from what I see. If you like unseasoned, overcooked and nasty food then you're good to go. read more

I was hesitant based on the reviews but decided that in such a small town not many people would use yelp. I am glad i changed my mind! I ordered the chicken fried chicken, my expectation was i would get a flat, heavily bread cheap cut of meat, this is not at all what i received! The chicken was a large portion of a chicken breast and lightly battered, it was piping hot and delicious and of course served with white gravy. I ordered the green beans, mashed potatoes and fried okra which was the best! (I almost ordered extra okra to take home). The food came out quick and everything was hot. This is a great place for southern cooking. The reason for the 4 stars, the server forgot about me. Stopped in for lunch at 50 Taters today, we were First Timers. Drove by the place and had to turn around, not the greatest signage from the road. Picked a table and sat down, all the tables were quite large, felt a bit out of place sitting at a large table for at least six people. I went with the Triple Bypass sandwich w/ Sweet Potato fries, my fiancee ordered the Chicken Salad sandwich, w/ Sweet Potato fries also. Felt my sandwich was just "OK", pork was on the dry side. Not a huge sandwich by any means, but it was only $5.99 (the Sweet Potato fries were an extra $1.99). But I felt the fries were excellent, really enjoyed the carmel sauce that came on the plate for dipping. My fiancee loved her fries also, as well as her Chicken Salad sandwich. My girlfriend lives near Scottsboro and has always talked about 50 Taters. I was really stoked to come here. We ended up with a hot Turkey sandwich and okra for her and the Bama Cheesesteak for me and I can't recall what sides I got. The place is pretty cool and a newer build with an old country charm ala Cracker Barrel. They have a salad bar and daily specials. The food was good and reasonably priced for the portions. The only real gripe, if you want to call it that was the server was very friendly but then became very unpatient. It was my first time there and we had been driving for at least half an hour. We were not in a hurry and clearly they were and became unhappy that they weren't able to turn our table as quickly, despite there never having a flood of customers waiting. A great place to sit down and get something fast but great to eat! We visit Scottsboro often but will gladly be coming more just to eat! Loaded fries with nacho cheese, pork, bbq sauce and ranch were a hit with our table. "The triple bypass" was good but not too flavorful, maybe needs more sauce! "BBQ riblets" were my choice and were amazing! My sides were corn nuggets and fried okra which you can never go wrong with those! "The Big Tater" with chicken was good we ended up shredding the chicken instead of just cutting each time but it was overall good! We will be back to try some more items soon! read more

First, the service was the best ever. Initially it's a bit overwhelming but every server was sweet and caring as they each came to check on us. Now, I need to let you know I'm a brisket snob and am being gentle ... there was no smoke ring on my brisket. The sliced brisket plate was a nice portion, had good flavor, and the chef gave me dry-lean per my request. The mashed potatoes and gravy were spot on. The grilled corn wasn't so grilled though =\ My husband got the triple bypass sandwich with all the meats. He enjoyed the pulled pork and brisket but said the sausage was not up to his expectation. We also had the fried mushrooms with white gravy, they were good enough. BBQ sauce was a hit - just enough sweet and just enough spice! Where do I start??!! We found this place on Yelp after leaving Unclaimed Baggage and I'm more than stuffed & satisfied. Upon entering around 1:30p it was pretty crowded with lunch crowd but once we were seated with 10min or less. Our waiter was Scotty, also known as the hostess, pitmaster, Assistant Manager, cashier.. he did it all! We ordered the Bama Cheesesteak with fries which was wonderful, full of flavor! A lot of FOOD, so bring your appetite. Also the Open faced turkey sandwich. I had no idea it was a thanksgiving themed kind of sandwich and was initially kind of disappointed when it arrived with turkey, dressing/stuffing and gravy on top. I politely told Scotty of my dissatisfaction and he immediately offered to replace it with whatever I desired. So I chose a pork sandwiches the fried okra & was very much so satisfied! The pork you could tell was slow cooked for hours and was sooo tender and yummy! When we got ready to leave Scotty offered us a complimentary hot fudge brownie and boy I tell you! Stopped by while traveling home from Huntsville. What a hidden gem. Food was delicious and service was even better. Sweet tea was cold and filled up when your glass was half full. I had the ribblet platter w/turnip greens and half a (huge) sweet potato...took home half the ribs and half the half sweet potato. A worker at Unclaimed Baggage recommended 50 Taters. We gave it a try and were blown away. The sweet potato fries were incredible: crispy and sweet. I ate the Bama Cheesesteak and my husband got the loaded pork baked potato. Both entrees were way more than we could finish in one sitting and really, really good. The service was super quick- in and out in less than an hour! Plus our server and server assistant were very friendly.
