We stayed in Scottsboro, AL for 5 days and ate at 50 Taters 4 of those days. I had a Triple Bypass sandwich, a brisket stuffed tater, a brisket plate, and a beef and mashed tater special. My wife had pulled pork nachos, a turkey club, a salad, and the last day she just had a huge piece of dulce de leche cheesecake for dinner. Everything we had was fantastic! The food was great, the prices were reasonable, and the portions were plentiful. We were so pleased, we didn't want to risk missing another great meal trying any other restaurant. We were with a large group that week and I heard nothing but compliments from everyone else who ate there. If I lived in Scottsboro, 50 Taters would be my go to restaurant. It's a nice looking casual dining place, lots of gimmicky design touches, but it fits the vibe. The staff are friendly and attentive and informed enough to answer my questions. I would rank the service as above average, but nothing especially outstanding. Now the vegetarian test... this is where I was disappointed. While I understand vegetarian cuisine isn't all the rave in the south, I'm disappointed that a place whose primary focus is baked potatoes, doesn't have a dedicated set of vegetarian options or any palatable protein substitute for meat. There was a vegetarian waitress that suggested a combination, so they did ok, for being a restaurant in the rural south, but it's definitely not a vegetarian friendly menu. Other than that, it's a nice place, not too expensive, the barbecue baked potatoes looked pretty good, and everyone else seemed thrilled. HORRIBLE! I door dash and dread getting orders here. They are disorganized and rude. If you wait for your order they say you're in the way and to go sit and then when you sit they won't let you know the order is ready and the food just sits there getting cold. The male manager is the rudest and makes the transaction difficult. We found this place a few years ago. It's a must stop! Sweet potato fries with caramel sauce is key. Today's special was brisket. I had the sandwich and my husband had the plate with 2 sides. The potato was large, perfectly cooked with plenty of butter, cheese and sour cream. The brisket was tender and moist however it didn't have much flavor. My friend wanted to buy a car in Alabama so I drove and he bought us dinner. He'd heard about 50 Taters from the guy selling the car. I get really excited about fancy baked potatoes so I probably overhyped myself before going in. However, this place is definitely a BBQ joint that has baked potatoes. The BBQ was delicious, flavorful, and tender. I got brisket-tato. There isn't a lot in terms of roughage and vegetables. The potato was giant though and tasted amazing covered in butter and salt. They had a great list of specials, and everything on the menu looked tasty. My daughter ordered the Chicken Fried Chicken with a baked potato, I ordered a variety of vegetables - green beans, sweet potato, turnip greens and fried okra. My daughter said the chicken was some of the best she had ever tasted and as for the potato, it was loaded - butter, sour cream and cheese, and lots of it. My vegetables were great... whatever the green beans were cooked in is addicting. I wish the turnip greens were cooked the same way. They were good, but would have been really good with a little vinegar. I did add hot sauce and loved it. Sweet potato was cooked perfectly along with the corn meal battered okra. My daughter loves ranch dressing, so she asked for a side. Glad she did, its homemade and soooo good. We read about 50 Taters in a magazine. Apparently the name refers to the size of the potatoes or perhaps the number in a sack of potatoes? It just said the name referred to 50 count potatoes. Anyway, there were just the usual pork, chicken etc potatoes. We were seated quickly and the service was good. Hubby got the sampler platter with brisket, pulled pork, smoked sausage , chicken and ( ?) beef shank plus baked potato. The meat was dry and not very flavorful. The chicken was skinless and he commented it tasted "boiled". He said the sausage tasted like regular smoked sausage and not grilled. I got the roast beef au jus sandwich. The waitress asked if I wanted mushrooms & onions on it -- I said yes but it didn't have any when I got it. It was just average. I have to comment on the " homemade" BBQ sauce. It tasted like Kraft sauce ( which I dislike) but with about a half a bottle of Liquid Smoke added . The "smoke" completely overwhelmed the taste -- it was awful! My husband left about 1/3 of the meat on his plate and I've never known him not to ask for a takeout plate to carry the leftovers home but he didn't this time. I think that pretty much sums up his opinion of the BBQ there. We were pretty disappointed since we'd driven about 60 miles just to try this place out . We ended up at 50 Taters based on the recommendation of an employee at the Unclaimed Baggage Store. We had just eaten BBQ for lunch so I was hesitant to do a BBQ place again for dinner but I'm glad we did. They are known for giant baked potatoes topped with BBQ but we opted for a sampler platter and a salad topped with pulled pork. The sweet potato fries alone were worth the stop as they are dusted with cinnamon sugar and served with a side of warm caramel dipping sauce. The other highlight was one of the sides of the day, sweet potato dumplin. It was basically a dessert and was a candied sweet potato wrapped in a biscuit. It was soooo good! One of the Asst. Managers, Scotty, stopped by to see how everything was for us and explained how the place started and pointed out the owner to us.
