My visits to Dr. Cox started because of a very painful bicycle knee injury; I had been assigned to traditional physical therapy which actually seemed to make it worse. In desperation and upon a recommendation (I had always distrusted chiropractors), I tried Dr. Cox. What a blessing! After only a few treatments, the painful knee was completely set right, I could not believe it. Then I asked him to tackle my chronic back pain. Over a few sessions, I saw a 60% improvement; I then I took up Pilates regularly (with Cindy Gabriel at activelifepilates.com) and the combined effect was such that I now live mostly pain free which is amazing in itself. The best part is that I only go see Dr. Cox when I overstress my back, which happened recently because I lugged a much too heavy bag on my shoulder all the way across the airport). I started coming to the Stanwood location about 6 years ago when my health was extremely bad. I was on a heavy dose of insulin daily and without medical. They provided me with medication and top of the line care. They got down to all of the issues I was going through and treated me so kind. Once my health was well and I was no longer in need of their care because I received medical, I then started volunteering at the Smokey Point location. Everyone that I interacted with as a volunteer and as a patient has been so kind and the most amazing people I've ever met. Now I find myself without medical again and was recently seen and again treated with the utmost care, and even provided with a goodie bag with all of these really helpful sweet goodies for my way home. The staff are amazing, the office is clean and organized, and these people donate not only their time but their skills and heart to everyone that walks through the door. The receptionist is…read moreliterally the sweetest, shes professional, makes really pleasant small talk, remembers details about different people so you really feel seen. The providers are a mixed bag, unfortunately for me I've had a really really bad experience working with Sunrise providers. The one who did the most damage was "Dr" Paulette Carter. She is incredibly transphobic, I worked with her for years, she never once used my pronouns. She wrote letters to my college misgendering me. When I would correct her she would say something like" oh but I'm not doing it on purpose so it's not transphobic". I had to go to her because she was the one provider in the area who took my insurance and could diagnose me with Autism. Which she did but she then refused to listen to me tell her about how much I struggle with everything everyday and when I requested higher accessibility support needs she refused because "level 1 autism doesnt work like that" she then went on to say some REALLY horrificly ableist statements about level 2 autistic people such as they can't toilet themselves independently, they can't make friends independently and they can't go do things in public independently. She refused to say that I'm disabled due to my autism, which is also incredibly ableist. Autism is a recognized disability by the ADA. And she refused believe that I needed a part time job, no more then 20 hrs a week, due to my disability. She told this to my employment specialist who then stopped offering me jobs that I would actually be able to hold long term. She's the definition of a Boomer who doesn't listen because she thinks she knows better, which makes her a horrible person and a horrible "dr". It also took her for ever to bump up my antidepressants, I had to go to therapy in tears because I was in such a bad depression rut, and I still had to practically beg her to up the dose. Basically, if you need a diagnosis get it and leave. Or just don't see her.

The clinic is alright, especially if you don't really have many options. In most cases it's better…read morethan not having any care at all. There is one exception to this. And that is Paulette Carter. Paulette was awful. She constantly misgendered me as a trans person. She also refused to prescribe me medications to treat my ADHD which had been diagnosed quite some time before I even started seeing her. When I needed to have top surgery, she insinuated that I would regret it and said she "knew more about this than any other health care professional." I can think of a number of professionals who would know more about the surgery, perhaps the surgeon for starters! Or gender therapists, something that she IS NOT. She also refused to schedule any more appointments with me for my non-gender-related mental health until she'd written her letter of "recommendation" for my surgery, and it became plainly obvious after I received the letter as to why. She LIED about me in my letter, saying that I had behavioral issues when the only "behavioral issue" I was struggling with was feeling overwhelmed and occasionally on the verge of tears at my job. Couldn't have been related to the untreated ADHD! She also LIED and said I was "noncompliant with my medication" when I had UNTREATED ADHD and I was struggling with memory issues and remembering to take my medications daily, but I still took my meds more than half the time. She wrote so much stuff in this letter that I would have undoubtedly been denied for my surgery. She also misgendered me throughout the ENTIRE LETTER. So, to recap: She is transphobic, refuses to treat ADHD, lies about her patients, and denies care to her patients when she knows she's about to pull something she shouldn't do and that the patient won't like it. If you get her as a provider, RUN THE OTHER DIRECTION. Otherwise, all the providers I've seen here have ranged from adequate to amazing. Unfortunately due to the high turnover rate, it's hard to really establish rapport with a provider for an extended period of time.
