What a fun pub!! Nestled in the outskirts of the Smokey Mountains this brewpub/eatery has taken up residency in what was once a church. A friend and I enjoyed dinner here one evening recently. We were both excited to try out the new restaurant we'd heard about from several friends. It's located in an old church in the Urban Wilderness area of South Knoxville. It's beautifully decorated with simple, clean decor. We had a reservation and were seated immediately in a table/booth combo. Our server immediately greeted us and took drink and appetizer orders. We decided on the baked potato nachos to start with, and we were really pleased with them. For entrees, we both chose bowls. I selected the Urban Wilderness Bowl topped with salmon. I enjoyed the quinoa, avocado, tomatoes and especially the chipotle dressing. The salmon was OK, but had a much stronger fish taste than I normally experience with salmon. My friend chose the Baker Creek Bowl, with grilled chicken and said it was very good. It included more roasted veggies with the quinoa and sweet potatoes. Overall a good experience. The restaurant was super busy, and I suspect they're still working out a few kinks. I'm sure we'll try it again! read more

Friday October 10 football weekend-- not at all prepared for the crowd it had -wanted to sit us outside-not what I had requested--service was horrible- wait for drinks appetizers and food unacceptable . my biggest mistake was not leaving. No leadership. Worst dining experience I have ever experienced. They must write their own reviews. Had to bus our own table. Bar was horrible. How adorable is an old church that is turned into a restaurant! The vibes were immaculate and so adorable! Next to the drinks which the mimosa is a steal of a deal and the winter berry margarita is such a fix for a sweet tooth. The food is amazing! I didn't try the Brussel sprouts but they smelled amazing! Finally the service; the people working here are phenomenal and greet with with such great energy. What a great setting! This restaurant is in a converted church sanctuary. Great decor, live plants, cool lighting all around, especially the back lit bar. We were seated quickly and our server was attentive. The food was pretty good, hubs got the ribeye with fries and I ordered a cup of soup and a cocktail. Met a friend here the other day, and it was a delight. Great choice for a spot to enjoy Sunday late lunch. Unfortunately, the brunch with until three and that's around doing that. But I was craving a salad so it worked out anyway. Plus nobody really should do brunch after three anyway, right? It was pretty hard to find not well marked, but that kind of added to the allure. Situated in an old church, the interior was absolutely gorgeous. Beautiful shelves to hold the alcohol and pews for half the table to sit on. Even the bathrooms made me feel like I was going to youth group from the smell to the style. They really class up the space, and now the ceiling is adorned with beautiful Edison bulbs and greenery which is sadly fake, but they do have plenty of real plants around too. The harvest bowl I got was delicious. Full of greens and quinoa and beans. And avocado. Yum. I added tofu, but I wish I had known it was fried. If I knew it was fried, don't think I would've opted for that. But I will say I like most fried food It was delicious. At four dollars for four squares of tofu that weren't that healthy I felt a little disappointed. Not to mention the dressing felt like it was predominantly mayo. Something like that I kind of wish was served with balsamic, or at least that option. I should've asked. I did appreciate the vegetarian add on option tho! One of the best meals I have had since moving here 2 months ago. I got the fried egg sandwich with bacon added and it was very tasty. The only critique would be the bread, seemed it was more for a lunch sandwich and was bigger than the filling by a couple inches. Everything about it tasted great though! The potatoe that come with it looked strange, but they tasted great, if you like pepper, which I do. I did add some ketchup. The restaurant is an old church, it is beautiful, bright and inviting. The decorations are cheerful and engaging. All of the staff was friendly and quick to answer questions and get me seated. I went here 2 years ago and had a great experience. wanted to try it again and went this past week.... not as good as i remembered. i went on a monday night at 7pm and tried to order 2 different cocktails and an entree that my waiter told me they had run out of. service was also frustrating- our waiter was rushing us to the point that he asked if we "had had a chance to sign our check..." he didn't seem to care at all and was not helpful. the other entree ordered came with the salmon completely raw through the middle... definitely not planning to come back and was let down. read more

First time visit to 71 South. The atmosphere was nice, and lively. The food was hit and miss. The burgers and fries were excellent. The tomato basil soup, and the humus were awful. The soup was not touched, and when the server asked if we wanted to take it to go, I told her it was not good. She walked off without saying a word. If you're looking for a quick summary and don't want an in-depth review, then 10/10 come here for brunch. Period. Browsed Yelp for new brunch spots we hadn't tried yet and were hoping to find a new place and stumbled upon 71 South. They have reservation options through Resy which is incredibly convenient. This place is so intentionally designed and well-executed. It is a former church that has been re-purposed as the restaurant it is now. Everything from the decor, the church bulletin-type menus, to the semi-pew seating leans into the former religious establishment that this place once was. We started out with the carafe + juice flight which featured house prosecco & a flight of orange, cranberry, blood orange, and pineapple juices. If you're looking for a variety in brunch drink variety, this is the choice for you! For food, we tasted a variety of options, and each one was exceptional! The sausage balls were savory and the gravy complemented them amazingly. The hot honey maple drizzle came on the side, and while we didn't eat much of it, it did taste quite nice. We ordered the crispy brussels and they were out of this world! Perfectly cooked, and the bacon that accompanied them was incredible! The goat cheese that was sprinkled on top was icing on the cake. The fried egg sandwich is definitely something worth trying for sure. We added the bacon and latke, and both were amazing additions to this sandwich. The bread was amazing and the flavors in this sandwich were delicious. The best item we ordered during this first of many visits was the avocado toast. The sourdough bread was beautifully toasted, the eggs were amazing, the sriracha was a brilliant addition, and the cottage cheese topped off this dish in an incredible way! Can't wait to order this again the next time we come back. Overall, this is our new brunch spot. We tried a few veggie apps and split a smash burger. I honestly have to say that everything was outstanding! The apps were perfectly prepared. The beet hummus was refreshing, and the included sliced veggies were tasty and fresh. The Brussels were crunchy and savory. But my favorite was the buffalo cauliflower, as well as the burger. We enjoyed the chance to finally visit this unique restaurant. We all shared the food we got so we could experience the different flavors offered . The menu is good with a lot of different offerings. It seemed like they are trying to accommodate a lot of people's preferences. We wanted a couple of items that we didn't realize are only available until 3 pm & we could not order them . I think they need to make a separate menu for brunch offerings & one for what's available after 3 . The menu was a piece of paper so that could be fixed so easily. Don't show us what we can't have, right? The staff we interacted with were friendly & helpful. We got our food & drinks promptly. The things we loved - the cauliflower Buffalo bites , zucchini latkes, sweet potato fries, grilled portobello & Baker Creek bowl , black been burger . The sides that came with the portobello were underwhelming though. The mixed drinks we ordered were decent but nothing too wonderful. The atmosphere of the restaurant is really interesting. A complaint ( & I realize it's nitpicking) is the chairs have rounded backs & there's no place to hang your handbag . We were a party of 4 & all of us had to sit with our bags in our laps. This was just kind of awkward. Also, it has a big set of stairs leading into the building not sure if it's handicapped accessible. When my one friend was in a knee brace she would have had a difficult time coming into the restaurant. It was noted by her that we didn't see signs for a handicapped accessible entry. New eatery in South Knox opened a few weeks ago. As we approached, I thought we were in the wrong location. The restaurant is actually a converted church (1936). Their signage is not well pronounced. The entry is quite interesting...There are high ceilings, arched windows, church pew seating behind the hostess stand and a bar behind that, which almost felt sacrilegious (I didn't know if I should order a drink, say a prayer or ask forgiveness) so to cover ALL basis, I did a little of each...LOL We ordered wine, beer, the "urban wilderness" bowl, Latke sandwich and cheesecake. The service was great and the space is beautiful, reasonably priced and the food was tasty. We definitely have plans to return. read more

We came opening day with our toddler. It's a great space. Parking could be an issue until construction is completed on the lower parking area. Drinks: I got the Paloma. Not a fan- similar to a Truly and didn't have the ingredient for the rim. Husband got the Appalachian cocktail- much better. I followed with chardonnay and it was fine. Food: Brussels appetizer 10/10. Brunch Hash- good, mixed with potatoes and sweet potato then served with a side of potatoes. I will likely ask for salad instead of side of potato next time. Husband got Nashville hot chicken sandwich. Average. House chips were yummy. Toddler: grilled cheese with soup. Good but grilled cheese cold (fine for a toddler) but soup is yummy. They were out of SEVERAL things (chili, Tajin for my Paloma, processo, and very low on bacon) so we couldn't get what we really wanted, the Frito Bowl and mimosa or my second choice is tacos. The owner came out and was VERY kind. I mentioned the cold grilled cheese but everything is has been preference. I look forward to trying again once kinks are worked out. Absolutely unheard of with that price... and it was a good sized mimosa too. Great atmosphere, good service for how busy it was and you've got to love the prices for how great the quality of food is. Not only is the food here top-quality and delicious, the fact that it is located in a renovated church makes it even cooler! The staff are always super friendly and helpful, and the place is always super clean and even decorated for different times of the year. We went here last night for my son's birthday and they were incredibly kind. We didn't have a reservation (call ahead is strongly encouraged) and they worked with us the best they could with the availability they had. We ended up getting to our table and it was worth the wait. I should've taken photos of our meals but everyone commented on how good their food was. Several vegetarian options are available.
