The colorful portrait art, hanging greenery, and classic arched church windows created a cozy ambiance. My boyfriend and I tried the sweet potato fries with cowboy caviar on top as an appetizer and it was delicious! Large portion for the price, and will be getting again. I ordered the portobello steak and loved it. The mashed potatoes that came with it were very rosemary-heavy, but good thing I like rosemary! So, after finally having a chance to visit this new, Vegan friendly restaurant we have concluded that it need some work. Service: was pretty much average, appetizers arrived with nothing to eat them off of. Okay, we fixed that, however, the young man running the stove absolutely cooked the sh** out of everything he touched, I mean CRISPY!(see photos). I anticipated trying this new place out, and found it enjoyable. The church atmosphere is certainly unique. It's big, bright and spacious. I was a bit disappointed with our seating. There were numerous tables of two in the restaurant, yet we were seated right next to another couple, then another couple were seated right next to us. The tables are bit too close to begin with, so I'm not sure why we had to be "crammed." The menu has some unique offerings. I had the zucchini latke sandwich. It came with two latkes (one would have been plenty), cheese, bacon, spinach and tomato with a spicy sauce. I didn't think the cheese and bacon went well with the combo, but the sauce was a perfect addition. It came with thick housemate chips that was also a good compliment to the sandwich. Being a "senior citizen" has its perks because I was able to order a perfectly cooked, wonderful tasting grilled cheese sandwich with thick, rich tomato basil soup at this new restaurant in Knox's Urban Wilderness Area. Our knowledgeable and friendly server "Sweet" Caroline filled us in on the menu options and some history behind the venue which used to house the old Sevier Heights Baptist Church. The offerings include appetizers - we chose the delicious mini-zucchini latkes with creamy chipotle sauce - salads, sandwiches, entrees (bowls and plates) and several desserts. Also a full bar is located where the altar must have been. An open design with wooden floors made the restaurant a tad noisy, however, management has install acoustical tiles on the ceiling to help with the sound. We will return to sample more on the menu, and if the weather is nice, we will sit on the outdoor covered patio. read more

Found this gem tonight, I'm in town with my daughter who will be a senior at UT. I got the monthly special salmon croquettes with mashed potatoes and brussel sprouts. The sides were amazing! If I ordered again I would request the lemon aioli on the side of the croquettes (it was too strong for my taste buds). We traveled to Knoxville and wanted try something new. Stumbled upon this amazing place! They are fairly new but we immediately were drawn to the unique experience. The reasturant is a remodeled church that will make you lift your voice in praise. Seating was immediate and service was fast! Our waitress was Lauren and she was friendly and prompt and gave great recommendations. We started with tomato bail soup and it was amazing! The space is absolutely beautiful and full of light, but my wife and I found the food uninspired and the service mediocre. I try to eat vegetarian but should have asked about the black bean burger before ordering. I suppose I assumed it would be homemade but it tasted just like a store-bought garden burger. We came on a Sunday right before noon. It was busy but there wasn't a wait for a table. The building is gorgeous and they did a great job restoring the old church. I loved seeing a lot of vegan options on the menu. I also liked that they have sparkling water (Liquid Death brand) which is oddly a rarity. We ordered the cowboy fries, the black bean burger, and the bánh mì . The fries were amazing and the black bean burger was so delicious! The bánh mì had nice spice to it but the tofu was a little too soft. We want to come back to try the cauliflower "steak" soon! The service was very friendly and attentive even though it got busier the longer we were there. The parking lot is shared with a bike rental shop and a few other businesses. There were plenty of spots but it was a little challenging getting in and out of our spot with folks loading and unloading bikes. But I'm sure it was busier than usual since it was a Sunday and the weather was so great. Overall, 71 South is a great addition to the neighborhood and to Knoxville! read more

Went today for Sunday brunch. Husband and I shared the sausage rolls and they were delicious. 5 on the plate His was the spicy bloody Mary and was good but tasted like zing Zang. I prefer house made. I had huevos Rancheros with a side of bacon and husband had the hash. Both were outstanding. Our young server was a delight. Only problem is the noise level was akin to a very loud food court. A friend and I met for lunch today at 71 South, a restaurant located in a former chapel. The dining area is open and charming with lights and greenery hanging from the ceiling, creating a warm and pleasant environment. There was a cool bar in what used to be the alter area but we were seated by one of the large windows along the side, giving us plenty of room and a place to enjoy the sunlight. We split Brussels fried sprouts topped with bacon, goat cheese and a balsamic dressing--yum! Although there were many good entrees to choose from, the buffalo salad I chose was delicious. My friend had the chicken chili which also proved to be tasty and good. The service was excellent -- the server anticipated our needs and replenished our iced tea without waiting to be asked -- a small thing but very much appreciated. Highly recommend if you want good food, lots of choices, friendly, open and un-rushed service. We'll be back soon! read more

This is one of my new favorite go to restaurants! It checks all the boxes for me - - friendly staff, clean, and chill ambience, an interesting menu with amazing food for every one to enjoy. It's difficult to find a restaurant for my husband and I or even a group of my friends since we have different tastes and dietary needs. 71 south has many gluten-free, vegetarian and vegan dishes that are safe for me to enjoy while also, having classic American dishes such as cheeseburgers, french fries and buffalo bites that's right up my husband's alley. One of these days, I'll make it to their famous brunch, but some of my favorite lunch/dinner dishes have been the urban cowboy fries, tomato basil soup, Bahn Mi Tofu burger (it was my first time having a sandwich in a LONG time and it didn't disappoint!), and I haven't gone wrong with any of the bowls either! I also love that the venue is growing with the brewery open (which has a perfect outdoor seating area), the bike shop where you can rent a bike to go explore the outdoors while also stopping at 71 south for a packed lunch to take on the trails! It's such a cool partnership between businesses that support each other to create something everyone can enjoy--kudos to the business owners and staff that are making this place so unique! read more

My family and I came to this place hungry after an afternoon at the Zoo Knoxville. We are Christians and this restaurant was used to be a church. I had thought the church decor theme was only in the inside but upon arrival, I wanted to go somewhere else. The whole place was a church structure that is now rented or occupied by different businesses that seem like modern liberals and yuppies. I could be wrong but that's how it looked. But since this was our second stop to trying to find somewhere to eat, we decided to stay. We then were seated, given menus and unfortunately, they were not the same menu items I saw in one of the yelp reviewers. Their older menu had more vegan items. I was disappointed that I didn't have a lot to choose from since they ran out of one of the vegan items, I believe it was the entree with the mushroom. Anyway, I'm not sure why but the server didn't really come to check our table if we were ready to order soon enough. We were starving... lol anyway, he seemed like a young guy, he mentioned he was new. But other tables who came after us got their foods before we did. Our food came and we ate. Honestly, the cauliflower dish I ordered was quite burnt on the bottom, I understand it was supposed to be charred but it was really burnt. I did not complain because I didn't know how long it will take for them to make my food again. The cauliflower had some steak sauce on it so that gave it some flavor. The quinoa that came with the cauliflower was quite mushy. Not sure if they did that in purpose or just a bad batch. The quinoa also did not have a lot of taste in it so I didn't really eat it. The mashed potatoes were tasty, I'd say it was the best on the plate. Overall, I don't think we would be back again if we are ever in the area. I had high expectations because of the reviews but was not satisfied with the food, speed of service, and ambiance. This place just didn't hit the spot for us. read more

My wife and I came into 71 South for dinner last night. We had to wait about 15 minutes to be seated and once we were, I could see why. The staff was so friendly and the food was incredible; we had the fried Brussels Sprouts and they delicious as was the buffalo chicken bites. My wife had the hangover burger and I had the jalapeño popper burger. My wife enjoyed the drinks and I had ample glasses of good lemonade to keep me satisfied. The food was ok. Several items were not available. The host was some what rude when we got there complaining that we did not include our infant into the online reservation. It was odd thing for him to be worried about and instructing a customer to not do what they did on something so trivial. Regardless the atmosphere is nice pictures make it look bigger than it actually is but the idea of the church and restaurant is really neat. I got the smash burger my wife got the egg sandwich. The Brussel sprouts were great the sausage balls were a bit cold when they came out and the French toast had a lot of cream cheese on it but it was still good. We visited 71 South on a Saturday night, we had made 8pm reservations which are highly recommended since it's so new and small! All in all, I think eventually this place will definitely make it to 5 stars. It's a unique concept with a really neat setting and environment, but some of the kinks still need working out. Food wise, we ordered the crispy Brussels as an appetizer. They are definitely crispy, so if you like your brussel sprouts less done...these are not for you. However, the goat cheese & cherry balsamic glaze make them super flavorful! For our entrees we got the cauliflower steak and the Matt's Mac. The cauliflower had great flavor with their house made steak sauce, but could've been cooked a little more as it was still pretty tough. The mac n cheese was good, but my husband said it was almost like more of a cheesy pasta salad since it had several other ingredients in it. The quinoa was okay and so was the pasta salad. We tried several of the cocktails, and they were good! My favorite was the peach Bellini and my husband's was the Appalachian punch. Our server was super sweet and attentive! There was weird stuff happening with the lighting..glitches maybe? It would go from super dark to super bright intermittently during our entire time there which was a little distracting. The original church windows and flooring make the environment super unique and a cool addition to this part of Knoxville. We will definitely be back once they're a little more established! read more
