I've been in search of a stellar stylist ever since Amber left Seventeen Jewels in Temescal a year ago, and so I was thrilled to discover Brandon at Seven (thanks to fellow yelpers). I was a bit terrified of walking into a salon because I cut my bangs myself (with mixed results) a few weeks ago, and have self-colored for a year. (A girl's gotta save money somehow, right?) I didn't want to be scorned--and believe me, it's happened at other places! (It's like, "remember that I'm, uh, paying YOU?") But I've been totally unhappy with my locks and so I dove in and...Brandon rocks, rocks, rocks! The whole staff is awesome--super friendly, gorgeous & stylish waiting area w/ coffee/water/etc on offer pronto, and no snoot whatsoever in the air as at some salons I've been to. Totally reasonably priced, too--about $60 for a cut. Another first: Brandon, who is exactly as warm and stylish as you want your stylist to be, introduced himself, plopped down beside me on the cream leather couch, and asked me a ton of questions about my hair history. Only then did he sit me at his station to discuss what we'd do w. a nod to the mirror, wash my hair (the massage chairs are incredible!) and go for it. It was like a fantastic first date--within the first ten minutes we were planning my hair history for the next year. ("Let's trim it and get it into super shape today, let it grow healthier over the next couple months, allow your bangs grow out a bit, do some highlights--I think a dark mahogony would be spectacular with your skin tone--and then create a bob with longish layers in front...it will look fabulous!") Such a great cut that I skipped the afternoon workout I'd been planning to do a few hours later -- who needs exercise when my hair looks so darn good? =) read more

By the time I get around to getting my haircut, it's a desperate situation. Usually at least 6 months have passed and I've been wearing a ponytail for a month because the hair down is wretched - so dry that, if I were a forest, I'd be in the red "high risk of fire" zone. That's where I've been for about six weeks and I finally took the time and scheduled an appointment with Michelle at Seven, mostly because she was highly recommended on Yelp. (So there you go - thanks, Yelp!) After apologizing profusely for the raggedy state of affairs on my head, I handed her the reins. She fearlessly cut off what was probably like 4 inches of straw, but was totally nice and non-judgmental, and by the time I left, I was strolling down College Avenue like a woman in a shampoo commercial, my newly-liberated hair flowing happily behind me. She did a great job of adding some new layers and making me look more stylish than I am while not sending me off with a crazy new look I didn't ask for. I would also like to note that she was the first stylist I've had in like five years who didn't try to talk me into dyeing my hair. (Yes, I see the gray; yes, I'm ambivalent about it; no, I'm not ready and I'll tell you when I am, okay?) Plus, after paying upwards of $110 for a haircut in my former life as a New Yorker, the price was right at $55. Highly recommended. read more

Easiest 5 stars ever! My stylist Michelle moved here from Alex Pope. While I would have followed her to any salon, I am soooo excited that she moved to THIS one (and hope that she stays here for a long time). Seven salon is the perfect salon as far as I'm concerned. It is all chic and style and none of the attitude (unlike...ahem - festoon anyone?) The salon is gorgeous and modern, but in a cool and understated way. And while I love love love so many details of this salon like the cup of tea I had while getting my hair cut, the massage chairs, the blow dryers hanging from the ceiling, the bare essentuals makeup and the kerastase products, what really stood out for me and makes this place so special is just all the happy people there. The happy co-owners, the happy and oh so helpful receptionist, all the happy happy stylists and their happy clients. Go there. It's a happy place. With shiny happy people holding hands. read more

I love this new space! My style guru lady, Lisa McCarty, moved over to Seven Salon and I'm totally digging it. The space is beautiful: a good mix between industrial chic, modern and classy. The chairs are comfy, the layout is nice. Lots of light and there are cool details, I especially like the basins where the hair washing happens. The chairs give a delightful massage. Now trust me, I would follow Lisa to an Elvis themed glitter heart salon in the middle of Vegas if she decided that was for her, because that's how AMAZING she is. Thankfully I don't have to do that, since she just moved to this sexy salon down the street. I recommend checking it out!! read more

Its the first of the month. Its a new day! I needed a change. I was transitioning into the new me. Seven salon, Stylist Katya, helped me transformed. From the moment I stepped in, I was welcomed with greetings and the constant questions of: "are you okay?" , "Would you like something to drink/eat/read?" This place had great ear candies/ear plugs (music was great to groove with). It had a great vibe to it as well, from the teamwork, to the decor, to the massaging shampoo station, to the openess feel. it was truly a positive friendly vibe. Everyone is involved and one step ahead of the game. Although a bit on the pricey side...to me it was worth it because if you had hair like mine, you will be cutting forever and working on it for eons. Katya did an excellent job. she was ever so creative and worked with my likings. I like that about a stylist. She was very easy to talk to and easy to continue a client-stylist relationship. My regular stylist, Liz at Trio Salon (who is AMAZING), has been on maternity leave for quite a while, and I was in desperate need of a haircut, so I did a quick Yelp search and decided that this was the place to go. I had high hopes for this place since the salon looked stylish, had great reviews, and if things turned out great, would save me from ever having to drive down to Burlingame for a haircut ever again! I knew, my stylist, Megan was "new", but according to her, she has been an assistant at the salon for a while. The Consultation: She basically asked what I wanted her to do with my hair. A good stylist will try to understand what you like/dislike about your current haircut. She didn't have a clue, so I just put it all out there for her. The Experience: She doesn't know the first thing about having a decent conversation. One of the things I enjoy about getting my haircut is having a conversation with my stylist. Whether it's about their background, why they love cutting hair, techniques I should use at home, or even how their day is going. Hey, if you're gonna pay to spend a couple hours of your life with someone every so often, it is good to have rapport with them, and they better know what you like! AND if you're going to be in a service business, you BETTER be good at talking to people!! With her, I always felt like I had to lead the conversations in order to avoid awkward silences (and there were many), I felt like she was uncomfortable, and sometimes I even felt like she was trying too hard to come off as being able to relate to me personally. Not only that, but she doesn't know the first thing about what it's like to be sitting in her chair. She was often talking to me while holding the blow dryer in my ear (hello, I can't ear you with a blow dryer in my ear). She would often forget to wave the blow dryer and I'd get burned. Her tactic for untangling hair is repeatedly tugging at that certain spot, ripping my hair out would have been more comfortable. The Haircut: She did everything opposite of what I asked for, and she even emphasized exactly what I hated about my hair -- which I waited months and months to grow out just so I can have it fixed!!! My hair went through such a beating, I feel like I left with more split ends than I came in with. read more

Upon looking over my reviews I noticed that I seldom give five stars to establishments that I have only visited once. As good as it gets usually requires at least two, if not more, returns to fully revel in the five star glory. Saturday was my first visit to Seven Salon. I've been rather transient about my stylist. Either they leave, have a baby, give a bad cut and/or I get cold feet. This haircut around I needed someone new, and quick! My Spanish hair has been growing like Spanish grass! I booked at Seven (after yelping), and got Nikki, yet another stylist who migrated from Alexander Pope. Nikki seems very at home and comfortable in her new digs, and she gave me the perfect haircut and blow-dry. I'm so relieved that I finally found a great stylist-who is in the neighborhood and totally sweet and charming to boot! Seven also uses Shu Uemura hair products (which I also use for skincare and makeup-so it's a perfect addition), and damn, love that shiatsu chair. Hope my hair grows like weeds again so I can get back in it! read more

As a brown girl with normally untameable and erratic hair, my hair had become a true lion's mane after about a year of no trims, hence the unwise decision of cutting my own hair... wait, no, cutting LAYERS into my own curly brown-girl hair. Needless to say, I butchered it, with less than two months to grow it out in time for my sister's wedding. So I ran to Seven Salon. I'd been there before, and I'd loved it (Katya is a very skilled stylist!), but hadn't gone back in a long time. The place is great, stylish, with drinks offered and a candy bowl at the waiting area (you'll see me delicately digging through for the mini Snickers!) Anyway, at the behest of a long-ago recommendation, I saw Nikki. To my delight, her hair was similar to mine, albeit not missing 4 inches of hair in the wrong places. I told her what I wanted and she delivered, all while smiling and chatting naturally with me. She's very careful when cutting my hair, measuring a lot, and that's good! Not only that, but she recommended some excellent hair products that I'm totally hooked on now. I now have a head of hair that is not only normal, but healthy and pretty! Check out this salon, really! They're good at what they do (they have many services I haven't used yet, but I've heard good things!) and friendly. And they don't judge you when your hair looks like a panda went after it with safety scissors. read more

My first experience was with CJ and he is truly a master in haircut, style and color. However, since it is hard to get appointments with CJ, if you want an appointment within two weeks, I gave Josette a go and booked a color and cut appointment with her. I am happy with the results! I have fine hair and it is not easy to get volume in it. However, Josette has great talent and I am happy with both, cut and color of my hair! read more

I'm both an easy and a super nit-picky hair person. I've only found one hairdresser that I've ever had a WOW, I will pay you whatever you want to do my hair, experience and that wasn't here. I was expecting a LOT from Seven Salon, but it didn't quite meet my high expectations. My friend raved about this place for two years, so seeing as graduation was coming up and I needed a haircut, I decided to splurge. I came in to see Kim over the weekend, but I had short hair and was looking to go shorter, which wasn't really her speciality. She recommended me to Jennifer, who does well with short cuts, and I changed my appointment. Kim is super sweet and super helpful; I felt like I got the best hair consultation ever. I had my appointment with Jennifer the other day, and right off the bat I loved her creativity. For me, I see haircuts as a form of art, your hair is the palette and the hairdresser is the artist. Thus, I'm pretty open to experimentation and funky, different hair styles, as long as the hairdresser knows what she is doing. Jennifer is super experienced and she did great work on my hair. The cutting was precise and her idea was great: asymmetrical bob with an asymmetrical fringe. However, I wasn't completely happy with the end results. While I liked the cut, I HATED my bangs. If you're Asian, you've probably been to one of those super Asian hair salons where they thin out your hair and make it look all wispy and layered. That's how my bangs looked, giving me an overall weird Asian rockstar/girl from 1920's Communist China (as my roommate so delicately put it) look. Here's where my easy consumer side kicks in: it's bangs, it's hair, it'll grow out. Despite all that, I got numerous compliments on my haircut. Jennifer really did a superb job, but the very thing I was hoping to avoid in my bangs was the very thing I got, so I was definitely disappointed. While I paid around $90 (haircut + tip), I don't think my cut was worth that much. There were hairs all over my face, and even some on my neck/chest, but there were no little brushy things to wipe it off. I had to try to wipe/scrub off the cut hair in the bathroom with a paper towel. Not fun. For such an upscale and lovely place, I think a bit more attention should be paid to the details. However, it is quite nice that they give you options of drinks, and you can get a nice big pot of tea. While I would come back to Seven Salon, I think next time I would be very precise in what I want and have a picture of the style to show to my hairdresser. read more

Michelle is amazing with cuts and up-do's! If you are a bride-to-be and need a bridal up-do then she is definitely your girl! I've been to Michelle several times for a haircut and each time my super stick straight hair is layered effortlessly in a way that makes it look like soft feathers instead of chunky steps or notches. Since my hair so so straight it show every single cut, so Michelle always takes special care to shape it so the layers look natural and seamless, not choppy. Love her hair cutting skills! Bridal Up-do: So, I went to Michelle about a month ago for my trial up-do. I brought in a few different photos of hairstyles (on my phone...annoying, I know). We both loved the same one so she went with it and I ended up not liking the way it looked on me. She did an amazing job, but to do itself made my face look too round so I nixed it. Michelle graciously adjusted to my diva-bride ways without missing a step. I turned out to be that devil-client that keeps changing her mind. I am pretty sure Michelle just worked straight through her lunch. I was there for more than 3 hours and she keps trying any up-do I wanted with recommendations along the way. And the whole time she was friendly, smiling, and pleasant. She never even batted an eye at my ridiculousness. A true professional. 4 hairstyles later (seriously...FOUR!) I finally fell in love with her version of the French Twist and couldn't be happier. Michelle, you are patient, kind, and excellent at what you do. Thank you for putting up with me. I promise I will be better the day of the wedding. I am hopelessly looking forward to sitting in your chair again next week and trust you implicitly. read more

I had the same hair lady for 7 years in SF until I moved to Oakland. I had a seriously hard time finding someone here. I have really boring hair - long and very-very straight. So straight there is not much you can do with it. Somehow every hair stylist in the East Bay managed to mess up my hair. They managed to ruin my hair in ways that I did not think was possible - limp bangs, over-processed orange tinted tresses, etc. I have been here around 4 times (need a track record before you can really rave about hair) and I have consistently received some of the best color and hair cuts I have had in a long time. My husband, who is royally clueless after 10 years of marriage about my hair, always says it looks nice every time I go there. Even after seeing the ginormous bill. I am with Michelle and she was great. My only complaint is getting on the schedule is a bitch. I literally have to book my hair appointment in advance after I get my hair done. read more

This is probably the most conflicted I've been about a haircut and hairstyle experience. First, the good things: The place is posh, ok, so what. I mean, that's nice, but it doesn't matter if the haircut or stylist aren't right. Michelle is a very talented stylist. She clearly knew what she was doing AND clearly explained it which was cool (I'd never heard of "disconnection", for example, which improves movement). She took her time and meticulously crafted the style. She could have rushed as they were getting ready for an event in the salon and everyone else was wrapping up, starting to relax, etc. She's a professional and has a fun personality. Also, I've never had so many people a) notice I had a haircut (so I definitely succeeded in changing my style for once) and b) compliment me on it. It's a drastic change (bangs, short), which is what I said I wanted and what I think I needed to actually look my age. The bad: I asked for a clean style that was simple to care for. That I did not get. I explained how layers always end up looking messy and I'd like to minimize them. She fought me on it and now I look shaggy and am looking for a new haircut. I like the cut in principle and normally would go back and ask for minor changes, but a stylist who does not listen immediately gets the boot. I brought in pictures of a style I liked and she at first went with parts of it and eventually just tossed the whole idea. Evidently it was a cut "anyone could do". I'm not interested in a stylist who just wants to give a cool new cut. I want something I can actually wear (and not have to get an update every month). I would have hoped we could have reached a compromise, but I'm not going back to someone who pressures me into something I explained I didn't want. All that said, I think someone who has more of a funky style and who is more open to a stylist's trendy suggestions would love Michelle. Her price isn't even that bad ($55). Stop in for a (free) consultation first, but make sure what you talked about the first time is what you actually plan to do. Otherwise you'll get something that's a combination of the two. read more

I'm your typical adult male that doesn't generally make visits to upscale salons. I get my basic haircut and keep it simple. I stumbled upon Salon Seven on College, noting that the business was obviously new. After just walking in a seeing the place for myself, it was quite obvious this is one of those high-end cutting edge salons that you would normally find in San Francisco. Upon my entrance, I have a very pleasant conversation with the receptionist and was lucky enough to have a quick consultation with Brandon on the spot! He fully understood my needs to have my hair cut and styled to get a "new look" going, but also understood that I work in a professional atmosphere and needed to maintain a professional look. When I returned for my appointment with Brandon the whole Salon Seven experience really began! You'll probably read it multiple times on these yelp reviews, but: they have back massages on the seats at the shampoo bowls! Matched with a head massage from Brandon and I was already to book my next appointment on that event alone! My haircut was quick, efficient, and exactly what was described to me. And when it comes to Men's hair, that's all that matters! Additionally, Brandon was able to make things very comfortable and was a pleasure to converse with. You can tell this Salon is really aiming for a much different experience than what is normally found in the East Bay: They have the massage chairs, the great personable stylists, a zen rock garden, hair dryers that pop out of the ceiling, great atmosphere, and for all that, the price was incredibly reasonable. I've already personally recommended this salon to co-workers and friends and they all share like experiences after their visit. Hands down, if you need a cut or color job and you live in the Oakland area, you need to see this place for yourself. read more

For as long as I can remember, I have never stuck to a stylist because I could never find one who could do a good job...until now. Brandon does a great job with my hair. I've gone to see Brandon twice already, and I've never gone to any stylist twice...everr. Brandon has this relaxed & cool aura about him, plus he's friendly. He listens to what you want and offers suggestions and tips. My hair is thinning out, and he managed to make it voluminous and thick again. He even taught me how to blow dry and tease my hair....yes, I don't quite know how to do that properly. I know it's impossible to replicate the way they style your hair at home, afterall, I'm not a professional, but now I can at least attempt to. read more

I have been seeing Brandon Yamamoto for about two years now and even though I've moved to San Francisco, I just booked another appointment with him. Why the ridiculous loyalty? Well, they're located right next to the Rockridge BART station, so even though it is a trip, it's still very convenient and relaxing. Heck, it's kind of an adventure to go see him nowadays. But the real reason I come is that nobody (and I mean NOBODY) has ever been able to do exactly what I wanted to my hair. But more than that, Brandon is the first stylist I've ever had who knows my hair's texture, weight, and growth pattern well enough to know when I'm asking for the impossible. In those cases, he'll suggest something else, do a little bit of cutting, and ease me into something new. I've gone from wild fashion-forward haircuts to slightly conservative (a.k.a. corporate) styles and been in love with all of them. Even though I'm willing to put in a little upkeep for my do, Brandon has always managed to give me cuts that are so easy to do that I'm practically able to recreate his styling at home with a product or two and -- at most -- a blowdryer. Honestly, the things you hear about Asian hair are true; mine is thick, pin straight, and event he tiniest error in cutting shows like a flashing red light. And have you seen these prices? I've paid top dollar for haircuts in the past, but Seven seems like such a great deal for a guy. A cut that basically lasts for a month or more with little change in look for under $60? Ridiculous. And for guys who want easy styling, ask Brandon for what recommendations he has from the Shu Style product line. They're all very well priced, work great, and don't smell like a basket of flowers or a bucket of chemicals. Luckily, Brandon is one of the most confident and capable stylists I've ever met and so long as he's willing to stay at Seven, I'll be willing to trek my butt over to Oakland. read more

BEST HAIRCUT OF MY LIFE! I have had lots of mediocre haircuts. My hair is long and thick and wavy. Whatever Jen did when she cut my hair made it look better than it ever has. She also showed me how to style it in a curly look with a specific amount of product with a combination I never would have thought of. It has made all the difference. On top of that, Jen cares about people. The fact that this is her place sealed the deal for me. As a business owner myself, I like to frequent businesses that care about the integrity of their work. UPDATE TIME! I have gotten maybe 4-5 haircuts here now, always with Alisha. Last October I chopped it all of and she shaped my unruly waves into a sophisticated bob. A couple weeks ago I decided I needed something a little less adult (and less high maintenance) so I brought in a picture of a grown-out pixie-type thing. I don't think she approved of me going completely tomboy (which I have a tendency to do) so she said she would do her own twist on it and feminize it a little. OH.EM.GEE. It is so cute and completely flatters my face shape (I did voice my concern that it would end up looking chubby). And it takes me literally 1-4 minutes to do my hair. And looks perfect every single day. So thank you, Seven Salon and Alisha (and Yelp), for helping me find my perfect haircut and I will continue to go there for the rest of my Bay Area life. read more

Jennifer is amazing. And her new salon is absolutely gorgeous. Hellooo massage chairs at the shampoo bowl. Plus excellent natural light at the makeup area, if you're there for an event. Jen is absolutely the best colorist, stylist, everything that I've ever had, hands down. And I used to manage a hair salon, so that's saying something. I've been going to her for 2 years now and I still get stopped constantly by strangers who compliment me, ask what color I use...including one over-zealous Whole Foods cashier who has asked me for my formula TWICE now! Like you can get red with black highlights out of a box. I refer them all to Jennifer...so that they can get their own color. Her cutting skills are equally to die for. I recently had a friend tell me that someone took a photo of me to her own stylist to try to get my cut. I'm not saying all this to pimp myself, I'm saying it to emphasize that Jennifer is just that good. She's also super patient with my thick wavy hair and blow dries it straight for me, which is such a treat. Plus she's cute, funny, down-to-earth, and a pleasure to be around. She has a long wait to get in at times (a month is not unusual for an appointment), and she's pricey, (I pay $150 for color and cut) but it's totally worth it and then some. I've referred two friends to her, and they love her too. I'll be going to her forever! read more

I got a great haircut from Josette yesterday. 77 Salon is a lovely, clean, professional space and everyone is always very friendly. I was wearing a mask but many of the stylists and customers weren't FYI (this is late April 2022). I went in to get a brand new hairstyle I've never tried before and Josette totally knew what I was going for and did a fantastic job, all while making it a collaborative experience and incorporating my feedback. And my cut was more affordable than a lot of haircuts I've gotten in the past! Josette was great at her job, receptive, informative, and kind. I never thought I would like the salon/haircutting/blowout experience. Lo and behold, Seven Salon makes it not only painless, but relaxing and fun. I've gone here several times now whenever I need a clean up or new cut -- Laura is my go to stylist and she is the absolute best! My hair is generally disastrous, or so I thought until I met Laura. I explained how I normally deal with hair care (which is to say, how I don't deal with hair care), and she fixed me up with a super low maintenance set of layers that I couldn't be happier with. This is long overdue. There are many hair geniuses at 7 Salon (including Nicki, who regularly trims my hair), but this review is for the staff that created updos for myself and my bridal party on THE BIG DAY. Michelle Sue was recommended to me by the salon receptionist so I booked her for a wedding updo. The trial went wonderfully. I brought in my birdcage veil, a photo of my wedding dress and some images of hair and makeup styles that I liked. I did not have a perfectly formed idea of what I wanted for the wedding day, but after some discussion and careful reviewing of my inspiration photos, Michelle knew just what to do. What a result! Michelle is truly an artist. The hairstyle she created was better than anything I had imagined, and while it took over 2 hours, the time flew by thanks to Michelle's awesome demeanor. She is really chatty, quirky and friendly. Also, I slept in my hair that night and I woke up looking like I just left the salon. That hair did not move! Since my experience was so great at 7 Salon, I asked all my bridesmaids to have their hair done there as well. I thought they all looked beautiful and I was thrilled with my own hairstyle too. Michelle did an even better job on the wedding day than she did at the trial (which I did not think was possible!). Everyone at my wedding commented on how amazing my hair looked and my husband was enamored with the overall look. The only downside was trying to get through airport security the following day with a hundred bobby pins in my hair! I was pulled aside and given a very thorough search, after which TSA concluded I was not harboring an explosive device in my updo, and let me pass. I used Michelle Sue for my wedding hair and she was da bomb!!!!!!!! I LOVED my hair...I brought in an elaborate hairdo photo and she took one look and was like, "no problem." She is so funny and cool to talk to...even though the hairdo took a long time (the trial was 2 hours), it went by so fast because it was so fun talking to her. She nailed the updo, it looked just like the photo I brought in. During my trial and day of, she made sure that the do would stay and it sure did! My hair didnt move one bit! The trial was $85 and the day of was $150, it was worth every penny...I think it was reasonable considering some makeup artists charge way more then that..I researched for a long time before going with Michelle..if you look at the work of some artists, its nowhere half as nice as Michelles. Hair, beware, you've met your match! Katya was referred by a fellow curly-haired co-worker. She took my mophead, trimmed off the dry ends and layered my hair so that it wasn't so bogged down by its own weight. I had it blown out and kept it for 3 days (heh heh). The real test came when I did my own hair and kept it in its natural curly state. The layers really made a difference in creating volume and shape! Plus Katya balanced both sides of my hair (one side was curlier than the other because of the weight). By the way, they offer you wine, champagne and chocolate! Truly any women's paradise. read more

I got my hair cut here for the second time by Katya this weekend and I'm very pleased! I got my hair cut here for the first time in February after reading reviews. I'm always terrified to cut my hair. I'm Asian and have pretty stereotypical straight silky hair and I've had bad experiences with people attempting to cut my hair. I didn't go in to see anyone particular, so I took whoever was available, which just happened to be Katya. The inside of the salon is nice and clean. They offer you a beverage upon entering. Everyone is very nice and helpful. I wasn't exactly sure what I wanted to do with my hair. After talking it out with Katya she managed to cut my hair just how I wanted. After a few months it grew out very nicely. When I went back this weekend, the same thing. I wasn't sure what I wanted, just to keep the length and clean up the layers and I love it. Free bang trims too between cuts if you need them. $60 + $10 tip for a great cut and I couldn't be happier. I'd trust Katya with my hair anytime. read more

I had to get my long locks chopped due to hair breakage and hair loss. (I bleached me hair a few times to apply color). The appointment system is extremely helpful and easy; it's all online and it tells you who your stylist will be and if you had a preference. It also sends you an email confirmation. I scheduled on the same day I went in and was put with a junior stylist. The place is very classy and clean, and everyone seemed very passionate about their work there. The pricing was cheaper than I expected (maybe because it was a junior stylist) but she was excellent. The cut came with a complimentary shampoo session, candy and refreshments! I left with a cute long bob cut and felt great, especially for someone who just had 8 inches of hair cut off. I will definitely be going back in the future! read more

I hadn't cut my hair in almost a year and was looking for a professional, unpretentious salon. Add to this that I am low maintenance and have curly hair. With the help of Yelp I found this place and have been there twice to see Nikki who is extremely down to earth and funny. After a consultation she gave me exactly what I wanted. I love my cut so much that I make an extra attempt to straighten it now but it also looks great when I wear it natural. I love that she doesn't push products on me and she takes her time. After experienced the cheap, the bad and the fugly from salons all over Berkeley and Oakland Chinatown (good for cheap and okay haircut), I've finally decided to go big or go home with my hair. Thanks to Yelp, it's a HIT! I made an appointment with Brandon, who the receptionist recommended for what I was looking for in a cut. Brandon was energetic, friendly, posh and definitely knew his stuff. Like many of my fellow Asian friends, I've experienced going to non-Asian salons and had stylists who knew nothing about Asian hair butchering my hair, but fortunately Brandon was not one of them. After a thorough consultation on my poor lengthy, thick but awfully damaged hair, as well as my hairline, head shape, face shape and all that jazz, Brandon shampooed and conditioned my hair in their infamous massage chair. Yet I grew up in a family that's addicted to borderline abusive Chinese masseuses, the chair was like scratching for me. I'd rather prefer a softer, more sleep inducing chair. The whole process took about two hours and the result was amazing. Asides from the fact that he accidentally touched my cartilage piercing and caused a little soreness from time to time, Brandon really paid attention to details and wanted me to have great hair! My hair went from a sloppy, just-rolled-outta-bed college student mess to a slick and chic airy bob. Before the cut I was worried that cutting my long hair cut short would make all the girliness I've gained since I started college go down the drain, but boy did Brandon prove me wrong! The bob was short, light, easy to style and makes me feel more feminine than ever. The cut was $52, the exact same amount the receptionist told me over the phone, so even though it made a dent on my budget, no big shock there. I ended up walking away with a conditioner Brandon recommended me for my poor hair, which I slightly regret considering the price of the conditioner. But overall it is the best salon experience I've ever had, so I guess it's a cash well-spent. P.S. Brandon does free bang-trimming between cuts, so yay for that too. read more

I absolutely love Jennifer! Now if there's anyone I know who's doing what she was born to do it's - Jennifer! She is so amazingly gifted. I hired her to do my hair for my wedding, as I've heard from many friends of her talented skills. I'm so happy I went! I showed Jennifer a picture of a hairstyle I wanted, but requested a few tweaks be done and voila, I was transformed! I received so many compliments on my wedding day, many asking for the name and place of where I went. I don't know how she did it, but she is definitely where she is supposed to be. I just moved back to the East Bay and had never really found a stylist I loved in the last place I lived, so I was dreading having to search for a stylist again. But I went to Seven because they do online booking, which I way prefer over trying to play phone tag with a salon while I'm at work. Megan was the first available on a Saturday, so I booked with her, and I am SO glad I did. Megan was friendly and so patient with the fact that I have no vision for my hair. She finally got my hair into a less lifeless state and I love it! She also encouraged me to try changing up my part, which I haven't bothered to do for years. She also got rid of the severe layers that were making my hair look even thinner. Even though she really made minimal changes, they have made a world of difference. She did recommend a Kerastase product for my fine, heat-treated hair, but she wasn't pushy about it at all--just left it on the counter for me to consider--I did buy it with some skepticism but it has been great. The complimentary coffee was a lifesaver on that Saturday morning, and the electronic music soundtrack was a welcome wake-up too. read more

I returned for a pixie cut in early June. Nikki was finishing up a guy's hair when I arrived, and she ended up running a few minutes behind, but I really didn't mind. (Honestly, I'd rather have an attentive stylist than one who rushes their clients out of the chair.) Consistent with my last review, I told Nikki what I wanted, and she delivered it. Plenty of people have recommended her for curly hair, but she's clearly quite versatile. The icing on the cake: The receptionists were great this time! Not only did they anticipate my needs (offering a pot of tea, then offering to refill it later), they also remembered and greeted me by name when I came back a couple days later to pick up a product that Nikki recommended. A month later, it's safe to say that this is the most flattering haircut I've ever had! Even as it has grown out and I'm due for a trim, I'm still getting multiple compliments a day on my hair. I've since moved out of the neighborhood, but I'm willing to make the trek to Rockridge for a salon that goes the extra mile. read more

I went to this salon for the first time today, and I LOVE-LOVE-LOVED it. The last time I got my hair cut a few months ago I went to a cheaper salon that I found on Yelp that got great reviews. My hair got totally butchered before my wedding and I ended up looking like a 12 year old. That's what I get for being cheap. So I was wary despite the good reviews for this salon, but I didn't need to be. I called Seven Salon and was able to get a same-day appointment with Nikki. She was super sweet and friendly and spent time with me to figure out what to do with my hair. She really did a great job with my haircut and style, I was so happy walking out of there. She also gave me helpful tips on how to maintain and style it. The receptionists were friendly, and the salon is really modern and clean. Someone came by and swept all of the clippings from the floor every ten minutes. The shampoo, cut, blow dry and style came out to about $65 including tip. I don't usually like to spend that much for a haircut, but it's worth it to be this happy with the end result. So I will definitely be back! read more
