Everything here is amazing. I'm a vegetarian, so in all honesty I haven't tried everything, but for the meaty items on the menu, my friends can definitely vouch. My tried and true absolute favorite thing is the Arugula Mozzarella Hero. Lately I've been getting it with roasted red peppers. Last meal worthy for sure. I also love their pizza, their Broccoletti, their Penne with Eggplant Sauce and their Avocado Hero in the Summer. My all-time favorite thing to do is order 8 1/2, walk to Strawberry St. Market for chips and a drink, pick up my 8 1/2 and walk to Scuffle Town Park and eat it! read more

For the price of $17.00, you get a six slice pie that's maybe 10" in diameter. The crust and toppings were bland, but the crust's crispiness was on point. My wife and I were extremely disappointed in this RVA pizzeria. The shop is unique, and in a great neighborhood. So I would still stop in, and try out the fare. But, I would not expect to be filled by their food, in regards to their portion size. read more

Ordered this for 3 other adults and 2 kids. I personally thought it was a bit too salty. Also the first plain red pizza was ordered to be well done. It was...but so were the others which I asked them not to be. My female relative said that happens whenever they order too and they live in NY. The kids didn't care for the pizza but the other adults said it was good. So this may be one of those places that it really depends on the person. There is only one table inside that seats two and one table outside that seats two. The wait is long, even just for a cup of soup. The food is overpriced and I'm not entirely sure the cook didn't put chicken stock in my "vegan" lentil soup. I didn't touch the pizza because of how greasy it was, but the others I ate with seemed to really enjoy it. My tiny piece of garlic bread was barely edible and very over spiced. I would have preferred saltines. In short, I only ate about half a cup of soup, the staff was a bit rude, and I won't be back. read more

An unassuming Italian restaurant that only does a few menu items, and does them WELL. I would take one 8 1/2 for 100 random other Italian places - there needs to be more restauranteurs following this model. The penne with ricotta, sausage, and broccoli is amazing. 8 1/2 is amazing! The pizza is one of the best in Richmond. Keep in mind, this is a takeout Italian restaurant, even though occasionally they have a table inside or out on the sidewalk. Lots of great food, but we usually get the pizza. One pizza can be eaten by one person! My favorite is the red pizza, with onion, pepperoni, and green peppers. Similar to the "soup nazi" when you call don't be turned off by the very straightforward "8 and a half".. simply speak your order clearly and don't be discouraged if the wait is 45 minutes to an hour. It is well worth it. If you call and they put you on hold.. for a while... don't distress! Just wait. Again, it's worth it. Other favorites include the Lasagna and Eggplant Parm. Good stuff. I am a huge fan of this place, as well as all of the owners other places in Richmond (Edo's, Mamma Zu's, Dinamo). 8 1/2 has the most tasty thin pizza in RIchmond. We always order 3 pizzas: the breakfast, white, and red with capers. They are all delicious. The red sauce is spicy and the fontina cheese on the breakfast and white pizza is so good. Oh, how I miss living next to 8 1/2. You could view the store front from our old apartment, which meant that for 4 years, it was a staple for dinner once a week. Their. lasagna. is. utterly. incredible. Everything is homemade and it shows. Like a good turkey sandwich but think they're boring? Forget about it. The turkey hero is out of control, and I was DEVASTATED whenever they ran out. It's that good. The arugula, prosciutto and mozzarella hero on homemade bread is simple, yet perfect. Pizzas are great and not the norm. The brocoletti is garlicky and flavorful. My mouth is watering just thinking about the potato leek soup. Everything is so amazing that you almost forget about the aloof employees who are inconvenienced by your presence. Hands down my favorite take-out in Richmond! My husband and I order from 8 1/2 whenever we want great food but don't feel like going out. Red pizzas and the pastas are my favorites, in addition to the broccoletti app. The red pizza sauce has a good kick to it, which I love. I've called ahead before and placed an order for a specific time, and every time it is ready at the time that they tell you. Never had a bad experience at 8 1/2. Plus they are right down from Strawberry Street market for beer, wine, and candy! Just a tip: if you're charging your order, you can't tip on your card. What a strange little place. My roommates and I were in the mood to try something new, and having no idea where to even start, we consulted a random restaurant generator on Urban Spoon. After a couple spins, it landed on this place, and seeing that it was listed under "Italian," we gladly set off. Upon getting there, we walk into a tiny little restaurant that's obviously meant primarily for take-out, though there is a single table thrown off to the side for that one person that decides to stay there and eat. So, evidently this place does a lot of business. Like, a crazy amount of business. When we ordered a pizza and spaghetti, they told us it was going to be an hour wait. I was skeptical that the food would really be worth it, but my boyfriend readily agreed. We bought a couple of Italian soft drinks in a can, and wandered over to the sole table to wait. They strangely have a bunch of magazines and books under a bench against the wall, I guess to entertain customers for, well, forever while they make the food. I flipped through a real estate catalogue until, right on schedule, they call out our order an hour later. I was presented with spaghetti in a Chinese takeout box, and my boyfriend and our roommate got their "red" and white pizzas, respectively. Okay, I'm going to be that one person and just admit that I really wasn't impressed with the food. I'm a wimp about spiciness, and both of the pizzas were really spicy. I guess they hid peppers under the cheese, because I really didn't see any, but Jesus could I taste them. Maybe that's what everyone likes so much about the pies here, because it was definitely unique. The white pizza was especially strange: it didn't really have the consistency of pizza, and tasted more like cheesy bread. It was good for (hot) cheesy bread, but pizza? The spaghetti, while a generous portion, was also nothing special. Big fat noodles with not enough sauce, something I definitely could have bought at the grocery store for a dollar a box. Service-wise, the girl at the counter wasn't especially friendly. Maybe she was just frazzled due to the dinner rush, but a little friendliness goes a long way in customer service, lady. Now, I want to reiterate the fact that I'm a pretty picky eater, and I don't do spiciness at all. Most people adore this place, as was evidenced by the ridiculous amount of people who came and left while we waited for our food. So, I guess its just me. Ordered a pizza (sausage, pepperoni, and olives) and calzone. The pizza was a thin crust and fresh! Be sure to lean over your plate because this pizza oozes with goodness! If you dont like spicy I would think twice before getting the sausage. The calzone with sauce on the side was absolutely wonderful. If you like large amounts of cheese stuffed in a breaded shell of enjoyment then the calzone is definitely for you! I feel lucky to live so close to 8 1/2! The food is delicious and the guys who work there are great. We've been eating there for years and they never let us down. Our favorites are the pizzas, spaghetti with meat sauce, spaghetti carbonara, and eggplant parm. Bread and desserts are good too, as well as freezing cold coke in the bottle. Awesome!!!! Ok so I'm literally neighbors with 8 1/2 and had only been once. The first time I had the white pizza and the pepperoni pizza. It was good. But this time I went in and ordered the eggplant Parmesan. Blown away. It was incredible. It was better that Edos squid eggplant (and that one "was" my favorite in the city) If you choose to eat here, ditch the pizza and take a chance on the eggplant. We ordered a margarita pizza and it was cooked perfectly. It was a little tinier than I expected, we probably would've ordered 2 had we realized how small they would be. However, it was delicious! We also had some garlic bread on the side which was simple but a good side. I'd bring a drink or do take out next time, only because the space is small (like two tables or so to sit at) and the drink choices were scarce. Tips for all of you who claim the service is poor: DON'T call at prime dinner hours during the weekend, of COURSE you'll be put on hold. (this should be obvious, although by reading the previous comments, my guess is that most of you have never worked in the service industry...) READ the menu and have your order READY. No, seriously. Don't wait til you have them on the phone mid dinner rush to make all of your choices. I have watched them wait for you to figure things out while they are trying to do multiple other things for the customers physically in front of them. They look annoyed, therefore the probable reason for their attitude toward you. ASK questions. They run out of items very quickly (especially that yummy lasagna!) so you may as well ask as soon as you call what they are out of for the night. Save yourself and them a headache. It isn't their fault other people bought the delicious food before you decided to give them a call. Good food takes time to make and wayyyyy less time to devour! ;) Most importantly, that place is TINY and HOT, and for the amount of volume those folks get, you'll just have to cut them some slack if you have to wait a little longer than they estimated. They work their asses off, just so you can shove food into your mouth. Be grateful and tip instead of complaining, they probably don't want to deal with you being a crank either. Heck, it might just get you a free dessert next time you have to wait an extra five minutes... And if you aren't happy with something don't attack the staff. I've gotten a soup, during busy hours, that wasn't as hot as I'd have liked and I kindly mentioned it to the lady behind the counter... who was MORE than happy to reheat it for me. Be kind folks. The meat lasagna is the best I've ever had. The tomato sauce is very unique and has a little kick to it. The red pizza is also fantastic. Full disclosure--the service has at times irritated me; the place is always very busy because there is such a high demand for the food and I think the staff gets a little testy sometimes. However, over the past couple of years since I've been going there, I've noticed a big improvement in the service/staff attitudes and the food is worth it. read more

Great place. I am a new transplant to the city. Reminds me of good pizza places back home in Philly and New York. AUTHENTIC Italian. Its nice that someone bring's a little authentic italian food to this yee-haw town. For the people that complain about the price... go eat a BBQ pork sandwich. This food is made from HIGH quality products. Maybe some of you don't understand how that works. The menu is actually underpriced. They should be asking a few dollars more for each item. If you think the food is strange, full of too much garlic, or taste's funny... you know you're from Richmond. If you think the food is great, you are most likely from up North, or just know what you are talking about and appreciate good food. Try it. You will really like it. Great place. So far I have had Belmont, Mary Angela's and Bottoms up since I have lived in RVA. 8 1/2 is the best. Crust is thin and crispy not all fat and doughy. Toppings are great and a little less traditional. I just like the fact that you taste all the ingredients rather than fill up on dough or cheese. I have only had the red pizza, a calzone and the lasagna. The pizza is my favorite so far. Having lived in central NJ. I know good pizza!!!!!! This is a different Awsome pizza. Not NY/NJ style if you ask me but let's just say I drive from Short Pump to there. Somehow not eat it in the car, reheat it at home and you will never forget the taste!!!!! Tried the pizza again and it was just as good as the last time. I had some of the eggplant parm and calzone this time around. Eggplant parm was OK. There wasn't that much flavor to it. The calzone is pretty basic in terms of filling. It had ricotta and mozzarella cheese and some prosciutto. The dough of the calzone was really good - crispy on the outside and soft and chewy on the inside. The sauce that came on the side made the calzone. Great tasting marinara sauce. read more

Only three stars yes folks only three stars , here's the problems with it first whoever was running this place on the day we were There is a jerk and I'm being nice and has no sense of customer service and brings way to much attitude to the dinner table, the guy had a knife tattoo on him arm in case you still go in you'll know who to not have wait on you ... When you run a business you simply can't be a be that way to your customers , all three people in my party felt that although the food was good it wasn't great and felt there are more friendly places to spend your money on food, the food , I really enjoyed my salad and subs ,the pizza was ok if you live around this place that's good but I simply would drive across town to go there again Maybe if it was more friendly I'd have a better aftertaste in my mouth. read more
