This is our second outing to Tulsi, and the business appears to be picking up compared to last time. Parking on a Thursday evening was still available around 8 o'clock in the parking lot across the street. I applauded the atmosphere and decor in my first review; it remains beautiful and refined. The service is formal and timely; the staff observant and accommodating. During this dining experience, we noticed that the protein and sauce (e.g., Mango) were watered down compared to our first visit. We expected the thick, creamy sauce, bursting with chicken and flavor that we had come to expect, but what we got this time was watery and plain disappointing. The appetizer, the naan and breads, were the same high quality, but the sauce sealed it for us. I hope that this was simply a fluke or a bad night in the kitchen, not a recurring theme at Tulsi. It is hard to recommend Tulsi after our most recent experience, only because other Indian restaurants nearby serve the most exquisite food. read more

We were supposed to come in June for my daughter's birthday but time flew by with everyone having commitments. But we finally made it! My daughters love Tulsi and picked it for lunch. It's on Cary Street near CanCan, across from Buffalo Exchange. The decor is pretty and welcoming. I was surprised they weren't busy. I think there was maybe one or two more tables when we arrived right after noon. For our drinks I got a glass of Pinot Grigio and my husband got a smoked old fashioned. Water for everyone. They also brought out crackers with sauces for as a starter. We ordered chili chicken, paneer, and shrimp pakora. All were good. It was a beautiful day out and I didn't wanna go home to figure out dinner. I wanted to be out and about amongst the peoples! Picked my sons up....they didn't wanna hang with me, even a little. SOOOO I went to dinner at Tulsi. BY MYSELF The place would be great for a date or a little romance. The ambiance was a lil sultry as the sun went down. The amount of food they give you is substantial. I had the lamb tandoori it came out sizzling like fajitas or the east(I'm sorry if that was racist) The naan was delish But the STAR was the lemon-drop martini I had. Bartender must have saw, me a solo diner that had been abandoned by her own younglings and felt for me because that thang was STRONG and I appreciated it. Generous portions (especially of rice). I bet the pakora are better when fresh instead of takeout but they were still good. They had MANY clearly marked vegan options which was very helpful. We visited Tulsi for our Valentine's Day Dinner and were seated right away despite showing up 10 min prior to our reservation time. That was lovely! We were fully prepared to wait. The service was okay. Our waiter was precise and checked on us every so often. Though not rude, he was particularly unfriendly, which was a little uncomfortable. The food was delicious! Fantastic portions and amazing flavor. Even the mild dishes had a lovely level of spice to them! I just wish my butter chicken had come with more of their amazing sauce, but I loved the amount of protein I got. The garlic naan was amazing and it was the perfect amount for our meal! This is my go-to restaurant in RVA for Indian food. I usually opt for their chicken tikka masala but also love everything I take a chance on as well. Parking is challenging but they offer delivery which I usually take advantage of. Either way, online ordering is always seamless. Unfortunately, in my experience, they tend to forget items more often than not, but it's always taken care of very professionally. It's just inconvenient since I was unable to drive this particular night and had to get someone else to go pick up my missing item, but the food is good enough to offer a little extra forgiveness. read more

If you're looking for an authentic Indian restaurant, this is the spot to go! It is super cute inside with elegant decor, and the food is outstanding! They give you poppadom as a little appetizer. Their cocktails are delicious. I got the Alfonso, which is a mango coconut turmeric cocktail. I swapped gin for rum and it was perfection. My friend got a lychee martini which was also good. The food is the true highlight of the place. Every single meal was outstanding. I am Indian and haven't had this good of Indian cuisine in a while! The Konkani was extremely tasty. I got medium-to-hot spice level and it was the perfect spice level. If you like spice, go for the hot, though. I tried all of my friends' dishes too and everything was truly incredible. My favorite Indian restaurant just got a renovation and let me tell you, it is so much cuter now! I'm a regular at Tulsi and here's why. Tulsi is in the heart of Cary town and it offers an upscale experience to enjoy Indian cuisine. My recent visit I was greeted by the incredibly polite and friendly staff. TLDR; food was great, portions were solid, service was excellent! Service - I took my 11 month old for dinner just before 6. The restaurant wasn't busy. Cute, quiet, and HUGE windows that gave us plenty to look at outside. I was nervous about braving dinner out, alone, with a baby but the waiters were all SO KIND and helpful. My waiter was patient as I decided what to order and gave excellent recommendations. Food - what first stood out to me is the menu. FINALLY an Indian restaurant that describes the flavor profile of each dish so that I wasn't googling every option or taking an absolute shot in the dark. So helpful! I also saw way more varieties of naan than I have at other restaurants. Chili naan, stuffed naan - I can't wait to go back and try them all! I ordered the tandoori chicken and lamb korma (both at the recommendation of my waiter) with a side of garlic naan. Everything was excellent! I ordered "medium" heat with the intention of sharing with my 11 month old but it was too spicy for her and a bit spicy for me. I was surprised! I told my waiter and he offered to bring out a plain masala for her which was so kind and helpful as I was prepared to order a new meal. Lamb Korma - had a nutty, earthy flavor. I actually didn't like it at first but it grew on me throughout my meal. I enjoyed the lamb and will probably get that again but I'm not sure about the korma. Tandoori Chicken - this was a first for me and I'm so glad the waiter recommended it after listening to what I was considering! I got several whole pieces of chicken on top of a bed of vegetables (peppers and onions mostly along with a few pieces of broccoli). This meal came out on a hot cast iron (like fajitas). The sauce comes on the side. I got Tikka Masala which was rich and delicious. I really enjoyed the few pieces of broccoli I had so I might consider trying a vegetarian option next time. Garlic naan - this was the ONE disappointment and probably why I wouldn't give 5 stars. We have been wanting to try Tulsi for a while and finally did tonight!! We didn't have a reservation, but still were seated at a beautifully set table by a friendly hostess! We had a really good experience having dinner here on Friday night. Tried a number of dishes and they all were very flavorful. I liked the concept of picking a dish, adding which protein you wanted and being able to set a spice/hot level. I had the goat karahi which was great. While walking by Tulsi we noticed that they had two outdoor tables that were open and made the snap decision to get some snacks while we waited for the walk to begin. We ordered the vegetarian sampler for two. It included an assortment of Samosa, Pakoras, and Aloo Tikki. The Samosa from the sampler is a personal favorite and I really enjoyed it. The potato patties, Aloo Tikki and the vegetable fritters, Pakoras, were also really good. My partner also ordered a bowl of Chicken Spinach Soup. She found it to be a bit bland. We also ordered the Rice Pudding for a sweet treat and that was quite tasty. Sweet with a hint of cardamon. Service was attentive, and timely though we did think it was a little odd that our rice pudding came out with the vegetarian sampler. From the first time we stepped into the restaurant, we were immediately impressed. The host was quick to greet us and get us seated. We were provided with water and their complimentary appetizer which was crispy flatbread (Papadum) and a variety of sauces. The food was very hot. The spice level was 4/6 and was great, no complaints! But the flavor profile of both dishes was nonexistent. There was no flavor only heat. We were very disappointed with our meal especially since it cost $50.00. I had high hopes for this place because of the reviews but it failed us. Maybe we received a bad batch of food. Idk. The food here is pretty great and the prices are fairly reasonable. Them mango lassi's good and so are the rest of the drinks. There's also a lot of dishes and sauces you can mix and match that all are good. I prefer the default curry with lamb. But the service is also notable . I was just here with my mom and she the spice level she ordered her masala with was a bit too spicy with her. Short version: everything about this place is fantastic, whether you order online or come in to eat. I love it here and it's my favorite place in the city! Long version: The food at this place is just incredible. They've got a fantastic selection of curries and rice dishes, each customizable to many proteins and spice levels. They also have a full (and delicious) vegetarian menu. One thing I always order is the tomato soup appetizer, it's so rich and a touch sweet (I think coconut milk, perhaps), and I think about it all the time. The curries too are magnificent. They all come with huge portions of rice, which are nicely seasoned. I almost always go for the paneer makhani with loads of added spice, it's the richest version of the dish I've been able to find in the state. I went with a group of varying spice tolerances, and the staff were kind enough to bring out some yogurt for a guest who struggled with spice. We also had someone with lactose issues, and they had no issues after sticking with the vegan curry (coastal coconut, I believe). The inside of the place is gorgeous too. It's well lit and well set, and you can't beat the location right in Cary. We came very early so I can't speak to how busy they get, but you can make reservations online if you're nervous. The food is a tad pricey, but it's well worth it for the quality and portion. I ordered soup, a curry, and split some naans (peshwari and chili garlic are the best two IMO), and the meal lasted three full servings. It also heats wonderfully as leftovers and has plenty of protein to spread out! Overall this really is one of my favorite restaurants, not just here in RVA but of all time, and I cannot wait to come back in. Hands down the best Indian restaurant that we have found in Richmond metro. Location: Smack in the middle of adorable Carytown. Street parking can be a challenge, depending on time of day. There is a parking lot directly across the street, but I'm not sure who can park there. It may be only for the businesses on that side of the street. Atmosphere: Clean and nicely decorated. The booths are comfortable and well-kept. The silky fabric on the ceiling is lovely. Service: We were greeted by a kind gentleman, Ali, who cared for us during the entire meal. He was very responsive, and it was easy to get his attention when we had questions or needed something. Drinks We Ordered: Water - The heat wave continued today and we did not feel like imbibing alcohol in such heat. No problem -my husband is a huge fan of water. Ali noticed this and continued to bring out carafes of chilled water without being asked. This made my husband very happy. Unsweet iced tea - Perfectly brewed. Delicious. Food We Ordered: Appetizer: Paneer Tikka - I love paneer but something about the particular combination of spices on this dish did not work. The coating was thick and paste-like. Even though that dish didn't agree with me, I'd love to try one of their other paneer dishes next time. Entrée 1: Butter chicken - Fantastic. I make this at home all the time and am glad I now have a place that makes it well so I can take a night off! Entrée 2: Tandoori chicken - Fantastic x2. Glorious layering of spices, charred vegetables, and perfectly cooked, still-moist chicken. It arrived steaming hot (see photo). Side: Bread Basket (three breads of your choice) - We chose to two Garlic Naan and one Bhatura. Garlic Naan is so flavorful that it's great on its own or with something like Butter Chicken. The Bhatura is a plain, fried naan. Pillowy. This is a good bread to use when you don't want the bread to compete with a super-flavorful dish, so it went well with the mildly-spicy Tandoori Chicken. Dessert: We did not have appetite for dessert but are looking forward to trying their Gulab Jamun (donut) and Malai Kulfi (like ice cream). I do wish they had Soan Papdi as an option. Those are delightful when fresh. Final Note: Their menu and website includes a list of spices they use in their dishes. Because most people don't think of latex possibly being in the food they're eating, I highly recommend the owners of Tulsi include a note warning patrons with latex allergies to avoid dishes that use Asafoetida - a spice made from the latex of the Ferula asafoetida plant - because it can trigger an allergic reaction. read more

My daughter and I arrived at 12:30PM for lunch on a Saturday & immediately seated. The server and food runners were all so polite, respectful, attentive and patient. Great service is everything. We started with a chicken Tikka salad, & Chicken Spinach Soup. While the soup and salad looked simple, it all was so flavorful. We shared the Chicken and Shrimp Tandoori entree. It was visually appealing and delicious! Like an Indian fajitas but obviously different flavors. The shrimp were huge, chicken perfect, and veggies nice and crisp, not over cooked. I would forgo the bread basket next time. It was a lot of food and there were other more interesting breads I would have preferred to try. Need to revisit.
