Thanks to the folks at WMSFS, I got all the right terms tackle I needed, with a diagram of how to setup the bobber rig. Took their advice to go with raw shrimp for bait. Doesn't stay on the hook as well as squid, but it's just fine and gets twice the bites! I'm be back here for sure MAHALO and ALOHA!!!!

We had to continuously reach out to him to ensure the rental process was complete, we didn't receive the instructions to meet up with him after he refused to deliver the clubs 5 minutes down the street even though his website claims he'll deliver, and after all of the above he was sarcastic, condescending, and had the audacity to ask for a tip at the pickup. Needless to say, will not be renting again on future stays.

It's pretty desolate and not very many people visiting them all. I think if they had some better stores at the mall, it would do much better. I remember that you could access the Safeway store at the corner from the mall. But now you have to go out of the mall and into the Safeway. And the Safeway is a large, super Safeway.

We got the light blue van with automatic transmission (road to Hana with a manual trans-no thanks!) and Noelle went through the van's features thoroughly before giving us a map of the island and circling all the camping spots available to us and our van baby. After giving us our camping chairs and wishing us a great time, we were off! We drove the road to Hana with no issues, camped in the rain, camped in the wind, by the beach, under streetlights and in the middle of nowhere. This van trip was so much more than accommodations and transportation; it was a literal and figurative vehicle for the kind of life I want to live. Staying in a hotel on a tropical island is nice; you can sleep in AC, lounge by the pool. shower and change in privacy, eat 5 star food and never ever feel out of your element. Staying in a camper van is awesome; you can sleep under the stars next to the ocean, lounge on a remote beach and then nap there, cook inventive, delicious meals with your camping partner, enjoy their company, and be bored enough to do things you wouldn't normally do (talk story for hours, play cards, snuggle up and watch the sun set for an afternoon). It was pretty incredible to actually spend multiple days worth of quality time with my husband, not just occupy the same space while looking at separate screens. You meet so many people who love "your" van, who want to tell you all about the van they used to have, and who embody the elusive aloha spirit that makes human interaction worthwhile and meaningful. We made several friends who dined with us on my glamorous one burner concoctions, or who entertained us with their stories from so many various walks of life over beers shared in camp chairs around the van's "living room". The van isn't perfect- it's 30 years old, and obviously is not a rolling Hilton. If you're creative, adventurous, and willing to see the bright side of any situation, you will LOVE Aloha Campers. Sure, we had to pull over a few times so Bluebell could cool down, and the E-brake light stayed on the entire trip. The back door flew open once in transit, and one morning I woke up with wet toes after some heavy sideways rain. The fridge never worked, and the cooler only kept our beer cold for three days. But those experiences just didn't matter in the grand scheme of things. We lived in a VW van, courtesy of Aloha Campers, on freaking Maui. Plain and simple. The "are you chill" questions on registration are relevant, and pleasantly reciprocal. In detail... As is made super clear up front, we were renting a vintage Westy for some camping around Maui. Warts and all. If folks aren't reading the bold print while making their reservation, then they are in a world of grumpy disappointment. After a somewhat last moment pickup reservation on our part, we were met by a nice lady who drove the three of us to Aloha Outdoors in Kihei. She not only checked us out on the van, but also ensured we were set with camping paraphernalia (chairs, etc), gave us a solid understanding of island options available and not available to us. We had already booked ourselves at Waianapanapa and Camp Olowalu, but were thankful for the miscellaneous detail. Our Westy was on the worn side of their fleet. The ice box was out of order, we were using the backup range by the first morning, little blemishes here and there, missing little bits like the front chair tables, etc. After 172k miles it is expected. Nothing dramatic. Driving the Westy was a bit more than initially expected. I've been behind the wheel of '72 VW Bus and other '60-'70 model cars, but was initially shocked by the driving characteristics of our Westy. It took 30-60 minutes to get into the safe groovy of driving her. (And once I was back home, I was hitting the brakes on my modern car too hard!). TL;DR: break early, having driving experience with older cars is super beneficial. Regardless of driving stress, it was an amazing trip. We had the black sands beach of Waianapanapa to ourselves at times, we met lots of great people, amazing sights, waterfalls, shave ice, etc. "Do you live Aloha?" Yeah. And Aloha Outdoors does too. On my last full day I backed the Westy into a rock. A bunch of bondo popped off the rear passenger wheel well. *Crap*. Afterwards I called the hotline to explain myself. The gentlemen was not pleased and said someone needed to inspect it when the VW was returned the next day. The next day the intake crew was unpulsed, photographed the damage to the owner, and ... I never heard back. Aloha goes both ways, and I appreciate that with these folks. My son still talks about this trip. "Makapipi" is his favorite new word. WE still talk about this trip. Highly recommended, get a Westy while you can.

A little background about me: a middle-aged first time surfer, a basic swimmer and a big fan of basic snorkeling. Weekly workouts include gym weight lifting, kick boxing, yoga, and Lagree. And, I had a HUGE fear of wipeouts. Chyna and her friend Aina once ran a small water-sports business together, and they also volunteered teaching local kids to surf. They lost so much in the 2023 Lahaina fire, not to even mention that Aina is also a Maui firefighter. Thankfully, their families were safe. Knowing their story made Chyna's generosity, patience, and love for the ocean feel even more special. This was nothing like the two commercial surf lessons I had taken before: no photographer on shore, no rush to simply get me standing for a picture. In 2 hours, Chyna taught me how to respect and learn from the ocean: how to read the shoreline, reef and rocks, whitewater and green waves, wind, entry and exit points; how the board works; how to paddle, turn, control it, get through whitewater, and even use sound to judge an approaching wave. Most importantly, she corrected my popup technique and let ME decide whether to stand when each wave came. Once I stopped rushing and started learning the speed and timing of the wave, I was able to feel the freedom and pure energy from surfing. Even the whitewater that had scared me before stopped feeling intimidating: I didn't get knocked over ONCE! For the first time, I experienced what surfing can feel like when fear is no longer in control and I can actually listen to my body and the ocean. Chyna and Aina, I'm so grateful I found you. From the initial communication and detailed information provided beforehand to the beautiful location and overall organization, everything was seamless and professional. Theo was an absolutely fantastic instructor. As a parent, I was nervous because my son had never surfed before, but Theo immediately put us at ease. He took the time to explain his approach, including why he wanted to start on smaller waves and ease my son into the experience rather than pushing too hard too fast. That thoughtful approach made all the difference. Theo was incredibly encouraging, motivating, and patient throughout the lesson. He paid close attention to my son's energy level and knew exactly when breaks were needed, which was especially important for a young child. He struck the perfect balance between building confidence and keeping the experience fun and positive. I was also extremely grateful for Theo's communication with us as parents. He kept us informed, answered our questions, and made us feel comfortable every step of the way. Overall, this was an outstanding experience, and I cannot recommend them enough!! If you're visiting and considering surf lessons, do it. In fact, I left wishing I had booked a lesson for myself as well! Thank you, Theo, for making my son's first surfing experience such a memorable and positive one.

I am super impressed with the customer service and quality of the boards at 808 boards. My wife and I lived in Hawaii for a little less than a year and we rented from Dallas and Crystal several times. Each time they were super helpful in providing us with a board (both long and sup) that would give us the most optimal experience. Not to mention, their store in Napili is pretty cool and has really comfortable local t-shirts. They seem to have a great business model that supports the locals. I know when we used them they used a local shirt company and Maui shaper for their boards. We rented from several spots and although thy were not bad, none compared to the quality of boards and service that 808 Boards provided... Our last week on Maui and finally a break in the weather. My two daughters and I wanted to learn to paddle board so we went to a shop near our hotel. 808Boards!! What a treat. We found everything one would need for a long day at the beach right along side the best boards we've seen on the islands. The owners shared their knowledge about paddling Napili Bay and each of us were given individual instructions. Believe me, those words of wisdom were alone worth the visit. The winds came up and we knew exactly what to do and where to paddle to on the bay so we were able to spend the entire day there. Ok you've spent a bunch of money and struggled through the entry process to get here on Maui. Why short change yourself on the fun you deserve ( and probably desperately need. I have been renting every year from these guys since they started 10 years ago. They have friendly knowledgeable staff to help you with any board needs you might have. They have good quality top of the line rentals. They have lessons for surfing and SUP available and they can even set buoy up with your own board and have it shipped home for you. Benny gave me an awesome private lesson. I've surfed alot 15years ago but was very rusty. Benny had the skills to meet me where I was at and give me a great lesson. He's got an amazing technique where he hooks his toe on my board and helps lead and tow me while we are both paddling. he knew the waves better than anyone in the water. When Benny started paddling everyone else starting paddling into position. He watches the water and seems to know when the waves are coming before everyone else does. read more

Superb service and quality boards! A simple phone call put me in contact with Dallas (the owner) and he promptly delivered a great paddleboard to my hotel. He or Matt were always available by phone or text for questions. I spent about 15-20 minutes talking with Dallas after he delivered the board, and I can say he is a great guy who is committed to service. No more rental by the hour for me again. My brother, dad, sister and I wanted to get up on surfing this trip, and we succeeded thanks to Ben Williams, who was really straightforward and got us in the water in no time. First stop on a trip to Maui is always up to Napili Bay to visit with the awesome folks at 808 Boards! Their boards are top of the line and their level of customer service is reminiscent of the old days when people had pride in their business and appreciation for their customers. But he called/texted to give me updates, and it's pretty understandable given that he's driving around the island dropping off and picking up boards. Like I said, I like his hustle and this is a great alternative to figuring out which surf shop to go to. A tad more expensive than a typical surf shop. We…read morecould not have had a better person help us prepare Zoe (8) and Cillian (6) for their first snorkel adventure. She made them feel excited and confident to put on their snorkel gear and get into the ocean. She set them up with a mask, fins, and a floater and shared with us the best place to see fish, and they did! I had already checked out The Snorkel Store website which is very informative and amazing. Signing up for the newsletter got us a discount, yay! Besides the snorkel gear we rented three Tommy Bahama beach chairs which are great because you can wear them down to the beach as a backpack. One less thing to carry. Before we left Lisa said, "Let me get you a bag of sand toys for you to enjoy after you're done snorkeling." This was so fantastic because grandchild #3 was in the car with Papa and the sand toys were an absolute hit. We will definitely make sure they're washed and returned with the all the other equipment tomorrow before 5:00pm. If you need any type of beach gear, this is the place to go! We will definitely be back again when we're on the island.

Outstanding! We rented two skimboards for kids who have never skimmed before. Sean dropped off the…read moreboards at our place and made sure the kids knew how to use and take care of the gear. The boards are excellent quality. We also booked a lesson. It was amazing! The kids learned so much so fast. Ed, our instructor, is truly excellent working with the kids. They had a blast and were so proud of their new skills. We took fun pictures and everyone loved it!

He also got my 5yr old-who doesn't know how to fully swim, up on waves. Boys had the biggest smile and said, "best day ever!" Sean had all the gear necessary. We just showed up! Complete your island vacation with a surf lesson of a lifetime! Mahalo Sean!!
