Was visiting family member at New York Presbyterian Hospital Queens. There were not a lot of dining choices in the vicinity. Need to walk pass hospital and up the block to look for more dining choices. Referred by Rich W. to try out 88 Canteen. Stopped by numerous times to grab a coffee to go. Nothing fancy about this establishments. Basic eatery place with tables and chairs. Sure gets busy at this place. Lots of take out. Cars just parked and patrons pick up bags of prepared food. Staff is really friendly as you walk in they greet you and very helpful when you try to order items. I got the cupcake which is $2.00 and large tea with milk $2.50. The cupcake was fluffy and huge compared to other cupcakes that I have gotten elsewhere. Will definitely be back for more of 88 Canteen cupcake. Here on Sunday morning! This place is popping! My kids love the pork chop sandwiches! It's fried perfectly crispy and the bun is perfectly soft and pillowy! I had the congee and fried cruellers. One of my favorite canto breakfast lunch spots. I used to go 168 tea shop down the block during college. This place opened after 168 tea shop. After all these years, 168 tea shop closed and this place still open. That is saying a lot. I believe it is because this place got better food but most importantly better service. I called ahead of time and the order was ready. They also have a bakery section with buns and pastries. I bought some pastries and I enjoyed its crispy almond cookie. 88 Canteen has restored indoor dining and it was a busy Sunday afternoon with many waiting for their orders. There is natural lighting coming into the store and the food is well stocked and organized. Too bad most of the buns were sold out, which says something about its popularity. Have been coming here since they opened a few years ago but not recently. Their salt baked chicken with rice has generous portion and tasty chicken. Baked pork chop with rice was tasty with fried rice at the bottom. The sauce is not sauce and it was just right. Fish with corn over rice: only 5 pieces of fish. It was more generous before. You've got to understand that this is primarily a bakery/cafe but it serves food on the side. I don't expect bakery food to be on the same level as HK restaurants that specialize at making actual dishes. However, their menu is HUGE and the dishes I ordered exceeded my expectations. I only wish they had printed copies of the menu instead of the size 12 font for their menu that's 3 feet away. Be prepared to squint! Milk tea was so creamy and sweet, most likely loaded with spoonfuls of sugar but that's to be expected Indonesian fried rice was out of this world! I absolutely love when fried rice is fragrant and this one hit my nostrils from the moment I opened the takeout box. There was a decent amount of meat and seafood in it and a delicious fried egg on top. There were also a few pieces of beef which were AMAZING! I wish they had put a few more because they were so good. Braised pork over rice noodle was tasty as well. I loved how much sauce was in the dish, it was enough to completely drench my food in yummy goodness. The pork wasn't melt in your mouth but it still hit the spot. The cafe also serves a variety of Chinese buns, which makes a great breakfast or snack. This is a great HK-style spot to grab lunch! I've tried the: 1) Taiwanese style pork chops over rice- two really nicely fried and juicy pork chops that came with pickled veg, meat sauce, and a soy sauce egg. This one is highly recommended! 2) Beef with assorted vegetables- they used the fatty hot pot-style beef, which was pretty good. The sauce tasted a bit peppery to me. 3) Spare ribs with chinese vegetable- good, but nothing particularly wonderful. 4) General tso's chicken- I saw someone else eating this and it looked really good! Very little batter on tender pieces of dark meat chicken; not too sweet so it was a good balance with the rice. 5) Tiger shrimp with curry- this dish was really fragrant but the curry sauce's taste didn't quite match the smell. Generous portion of shrimp though! They're a tad pricier than the other spot down the street, but the menus are fairly different. The portions are pretty generous and the flavors are good. Another Yelper was spot-on in mentioning the tiny font of the regular menu though! So hard to read! And be aware that this spot gets pretty busy so it can be hard to find a spot to sit and eat. read more
