But I prefer shopping at Fred Meyer and think the atmosphere is just different from Wal Mart. Anyways, my husband and I ended up shopping at this particular location twice while staying in Fairbanks, to stock up on groceries. Fred Meyer is part of the Kroger family and so if you have a loyalty card with this market chain, you can provide the phone number you used to sign up for that, at check out to get additional savings. Convenient location with plenty of parking. The store was clean and I appreciated the disinfectant wipes inside, by the front entrance so that I could wipe my cart down. If I was a local, I would shop here regularly.

Fred Raymond, the owner, runs a one man operation, and is a perfect example of why one should always shop local whenever possible (there was even a news article featuring him and his story/business in the local paper last year). He's an "old-timer" with a wealth of knowledge, and is quick to give personalized advice about the products he sells without being pushy. Not to mention that he's a retired professional bike racer and skier, and his enthusiasm for both sports is contagious. Both my husband and I have bought skis from Fred before, and in each case after shopping around town (and even online), his prices were the lowest for brand name, high quality skis, and we got exactly what we wanted in terms of product fit and quality (all of the skis sold here come with a 2 year warranty!). He also throws in free waxing, and gives a variety of discounts to make it an overall really great deal. On top of that, he sponsors free wax clinics and is active in promoting the local ski/skijor clubs and races, so you know he really does this for the love of the sport and not merely to make money. One note, don't let the industrial part of town or the building where his shop is located throw you off. The reason he can stay in business and have such great deals is that the location allows him to keep overhead low, so if you find yourself driving over train tracks and passing retired train cars, yes, you've come to the right place, and you're almost there!
