Cartwrights has some of the best tasting bread I love eaten (besides my ex mother-in-laws home made bread.) I had the grilled sandwich with some homemade ranch dressing and I enjoyed every bite. Located on the square, I remember visiting this place in the 2012 time frame or so. The Square has changed quite a bit and quite frankly is alive and extremely busy, especially on this Labor Day visit. It has the feel of a small town square diner still, just bulging with customers inside and waiting outside for their table. Parking can be a bear in this area so beware. Very simple setting of tables and chairs. I thought their using a green memo pad to be a little outdated but falls under the quaint category. However, somehow our name was skipped over and when my wife noticed that several parties were seated before us she pointed out name out to the hostess and we were of course sat down next. Added about 20 minutes to our wait time which would only have been about 12-15 prior to that oversight. We got there right before noon so again understanding it's a busy time of day and a holiday on top of that. Waitress was very nice if not easily distracted. She handed us our menus, went to say hi to another couple that sat down behind us, then volunteered to take a family of 12s picture. We are very understanding and it's a good holiday to spend with family. However, then she went to the other couples table and took their order. Then went to wipe down the table of the family that left and then finally came back to take our order nearly 15 minutes later. I think any reasonable person would consider that annoying at best and also now we are nearly 30-40 minutes behind unnecessarily. My daughter had wanted a chicken fried steak which started our trek here in the first place, so getting back on track the menu is what you might expect of a town square restaurant that's serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner. She did get her wish and thoroughly enjoyed it; while at $14.99 she felt it was worth every penny. I was thankfully given a bite and agreed with her. Gravy and mash potatoes just added and it was just home-cooking style lunch that requires a good nap afterwards. I decided to detour of my intention of joining her with a CFS of my own and instead went with the catfish. $11.99 and the breading was really great. As a side note, you can order all u can eat catfish for just another $3 after 4 o'clock. The waitress did offer to make an exception for me since it was only about 1:30 but I declined. My wife ordered the roast beef sandwich. She has vainly been in search of a good roast beef that she gets in the New Orleans area where she's from. This isn't it but I thought it did stand on it's own two legs and for $11.99 not a bad value. I think the difference is the gravy on this one which is more texas style brown gravy rather than a debris gravy.... My youngest got the bacon cheeseburger. It was pretty good and also $11.99. I thought the fries were so-so on it. Each of the entrees comes with two sides and so it's quite reasonably priced. The food held it's own, but the service, the seating time, and by the way we did wait another 20 minutes for the food to come out do not bode well if you are looking for a place to get in and out quick. I don't rank many places 3 stars but then say it's ok to go there but this one is a rare exception. Food for the most part nails it, though the tartar sauce is a little too much onions in it. But everything here is homemade and I can appreciate that. But in my opinion, the place is not worth a two-hour lunch time frame. read more

I know this place has been here for a while, but I just don't go to downtown Denton very often on the weekends as there is generally nowhere to park. My wife decided we needed to go and I am glad she made me, the food was unbelievable. She had her usual Benedict while I had the Big Ben, which is biscuits and graveyard with all the meats, 3 eggs and some potatoes Ina pseudo-skillet. It was heaven. I was hungry so found a new place to try. I took meds that are supposed to be taken, without food, and as a result feeling quite bad (nausea which is common side effect of taking those without food), so needed something in my stomach. Because feeling nauseous, I didn't want anything greasy so just ordered some pancakes. The pancakes itself has very limited flavor, but wasn't bad with syrup. There is pineapple cooked into the pancakes as well as on top. Overall wasn't exceptional, but wasn't bad. I want to try some of the burgers on the menu or more of a full breakfast entree sometime, since leaving a review based solely on 1 stack of 3 pancakes, isn't the best to go on. I was looking for a brunch place in Denton with good food and cheap mimosas $4, I found one. When you walk up to the front door they have a couple of little tables out front, walking in I realized the place kind of had a strange layout. The main front room and a wide corridor of tables leading to the back of the restaurant where the kitchen and restrooms are located. We were greeted quickly and the staff was very friendly, I ordered the "Wyatt Earp" and it came out quickly. Everything was good, I really liked their sausage patties good peppery flavor but the potatoes are deep fried the menu says Skillet potatoes so I was expecting potatoes cooked on a griddle or Skillet with onions and peppers , their were barely noticeable diced peppers in these. One of my favorite places to eat. Sunday is busy but we were seated right away about 12:45pm. Our waitress, Morgan, was quick, friendly and efficient. Me and my fiancé have been eating here for breakfast and the occasional lunch for about 3 years now. It's close to where we work and it opens at 7am which is super convenient for us. The staff are always very friendly and let you chose your seat and take your drink order right away. This Wednesday we went in for breakfast and I got The Big Bend because I was craving some biscuits and gravy and all the fixins. I can't remember what my fiancé ordered but I know it had pancakes with it, his favorite breakfast item, lol. He definitely took a double take at my plate when it came out, I could tell he was second guessing his decision on breakfast, there was meat piled all over my biscuits, gravy and eggs. He already knew he'd get his fair share. Let's just say The Big Bend has it all, fluffy biscuits, warm gravy, eggs however you like them and cut up sausage, bacon, and ham. The layout is strange as it first appears to only have front (street side) seating and then the kitchen, but if you walk through the half kitchen access/ open walkthrough hallway there is a back side which allows for ample seating and can accommodate large parties. For the yummy stuff, my BLT Sammy was delish, large fluffy multigrain bread that supported crispy and thick bacon- YUM! Well done on the bacon, it was awesome. The tortilla soup was less impressive, too much cheese added for my liking and the taste was bland. I still ate it, but defiantly was missing the layers you'd expect of from a soup. I think they should put the tortilla strips on the side as well since mine were mostly soggy at delivery and under the heavy handed cheese glob. The service was nice, I had to flag the waitress for a drink refill but she was attentive otherwise and cheerful. I'd give 3.5 stars for a traditional weekday lunch. read more

SUMMARY: Want to get a feel of hospitable Denton dining and get a good bang-for-the-buck return? Cartwright's is your place! BACKGROUND: When we aren't working Saturdays, we try to make a trip to Cartwright's for their good food, friendly service, and non-pretentious atmosphere. FOOD: It's simple, no-frills homestyle country kitchen food! Simple doesn't necessarily mean boring. In fact, if you get the basics right, it (for me anyways), it outshines the overly done, artsy food creations in my book. I've only been here once for lunch, so I'll talk more about the breakfasts. I like to keep my choices simple these days so I almost always get pancakes with eggs and bacon. The last three times it has been consistently delicious without great variation (e.g. bacon too undercooked or overcooked, depending on the day). I never finish because the portions are generous too. I mean I could, but I save one pancake for the next morning at home :) One small gripe is that the coffee is a bit weak for my taste. It's typical diner coffee, which to me is a very light Colombian roast. However, the refillls keep coming, so that makes up for it. ATMOSPHERE: They have a really nicely done wall mural (see pic) and the atmosphere is laid back. People from all stripes dine here. In other words, a judgement free establishment. And the tables and floor is always clean when we've visited. OTHER: Parking can be a pain in the area and given it's right across from the square (west side), parking is limited---and that's why we go on the early side around 8:00 - 8:30am so we don't have to fight for parking. I come too infrequently but I crave Cartwrights weekly. I've never ever had a disappointing experience here. Everything from the fish to the salads to the steak and pork chops is bliss. My favorite thing that they have is the rattlers - and personally, there is nowhere better when it comes to the sweet potato fries. The cost is about what you will spend elsewhere, but the portions are cowboy sized (large). My kiddo is autistic and doesn't eat much when overstimulated. We explained and she insisted she wanted catfish so we got her the bottomless. Kid sort of ate it but the waitress saw the struggle, and even though we hadn't asked she gave us a side order in a to go box. Any time I've ever asked to compliment the chef they really do, which is a small thing maybe, but they wholly don't dismiss you - the service is always superb. Cartwrights is usually very busy and packed when I go, and they always take you in quickly and treat each guest as special. Once my daughter asked for "fancy pancakes" - I apologized and they did let us know they don't make fancy pancakes ( but the cook was up for it and made Mickey Mouse pancakes). Was a wonderful surprise and I don't much like pancakes but I helped finish them when the kid was done and these are literally the only pancakes I would ever willingly eat- they were DEVINE! Everything is always served as requested (and hot, fresh, good quality) and they pay attention to detail. The ONE time I went with someone allergic to an item and it was on their plate, when the server saw it she insisted on taking it and having it remade before we could even say anything! (We didn't want to cause more work and weren't going to say anything, lol- shout out to that waitress). [[HIGHLIGHT]]Cartwrights vibe inside is southern/ western/ country and cozy however you want to word it. They maximize their space[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]. [[HIGHLIGHT]]It can get loud so if you are neurodivergent some Loops or headphones may be a good idea.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Parking: it's the square so... park off the square. Pay attention to where will tow you per the towing signs but walk to Cartwrights. Backing out of those spaces is a pain and they aren't always available and stay full packed in those spots in front of the shops. If you've never been to Cartwrights you DO want to pay attention to their hours. Half the time I want to come, they've closed already. Their hours are business and family smart but my work life balance makes this the reason why I don't get to go more often. 20 out of 10 stars, hands down this is such a wonderful place to sit and eat. read more
