Full disclosure: We are Mexican food snobs. Highly critical of everything from the chips and salsa to the tortillas and the red and green chiles used (if it's spelled with an "i" on the menu...chili...huge red flag!). First, the atmosphere is very inviting for both a gathering of friends, but also a family could have a great meal there without feeling like you have to yell or compete with a happy hour crowd. The decor is chic and the mural in the rear part of the restaurant is amazing. We generally do not get cocktails often, but with a 1/2 off happy hour, we tried two different ones and both were amazing. One had a chamoy straw and I wish I could tell you what they were called, but I can't remember - just go with what looks like the most complex flavors and you won't be disappointed. We had the empanadas as an appetizer...excellent flaky crust, great filling; the fajitas, another great pick; and the short rib enchiladas with a pipían sauce...think spicier mole and not as chocolate-ly. I used to have pipían as a kid and this is a pretty good representation. If you like spicy, ask for the spicier salsa which is still not killer spicy (I could have used more heat) but the morita chiles speaks to the kitchen's knowledge of Mexican chiles and how to use them. Let's start with the positives- It is BEAUTIFUL inside. Like GORGEOUS. The vibes are amazing. The music is awesome. They got the nuances down for Mexican culture in this way. The drinks were also good! Now- the food. I hate to say this but it was very white washed mediocre Mexican food. And I had such high hopes because of how beautiful the inside was. The queso fundido was the best thing we got. But everything else was just "meh". Then we got the tres leches for dessert and it wasn't even wet which sealed the deal for me. I went here with a few friends for a happy hour Mexican spot and I'm so pleased by my experience! I got the blackened fish with veggies and rice, which was absolutely delicious. Our server was so kind and there were plenty of places for us to take pictures as well. The chops were very flavorful and the portion sizes were very big! I absolutely loved the interiors of this place. They had so many spots where you could take pictures with friends or enjoy the scenery of Denton. I look forward to coming back here soon! read more

This restaurant on the corner of the square in Denton offers a wonderful, relaxed atmosphere and good food. We had not been here before but were in the area and decided to drop in. It was midafternoon, but the lunch menu was still in effect, although it was not given to us by the hostess. Our server suggested it and he ws right to do so because the prices are much better. My wife and I each ended up doing a three taco/enchilada plate combo for $14.00. Not huge tacos or enchiladas, but good size for the price. My choices were cheese enchilada (good), chicken enchilada (really packed full of excellent shredded chicken with an outstanding sauce, and shrimp taco (by far the highlight, full of flavor and plenty of shrimp). My wife selected shirt rib enchilada (excellent flavor and lean meat), shrimp taco, and chicken taco (the same well-seasoned shredded chicken as my enchilada). Both meals came with rice and beans. We also had a side of queso which was good but not special. I thought the chips that came with the meal along with the salsa were very high quality. They also came with an outstanding warm mole that really stood out. In the world of Tex-Mex everything was above average from ambiance, décor, service and food. I also had a Union Bear Mexican Lager (bottled but poured into a chilled glass, and my wife had a Frida Cuvee, a very nice drink from the menu. Would not make it a planned trip into Denton downtown to visit Mexican Oak, but would certainly go back if plans to be in the area and in the mood for Tex-Mex. read more

The mango margarita is very good and the chips are addictive. I'm sharing a plate with my husband .. annachera fajitas - medium rare. They were so good I forgot to take a pic. Then we had the quatros leche cake and it was divine. If you don't consume a lot , sharing a fajita plate here is the perfect amount of food. It was diving. Will be back. read more

Mexican Oak is a beautiful restaurant! It is a Dia de los Muertos theme. They offer authentic Mexican food. That being said, (unlike most authentic Mexican restaurants) they do offer complimentary chips, salsa, & bean dip. Reservations are accepted, but not required. We were promptly greeted and seated. Service was friendly, professional, and attentive. Our table ordered the crudo del dia, tortillas soup, and enchiladas de short rib w/a mole type sauce. We also ordered a Tex-Mex queso, which was just a test item on their menu. If you want authentic Mexican cheese dip, they do offer queso fundido. The rice was mushy, but everything else was delicious. All of the food was nicely presented. It was Dallaa prices in Denton (read pricey for Denton). Friendly and attentive service from Tay and they were well-versed on the menu as well as flavor combos. Cool tip is that they have a rotating menu, so you might as well give them a second chance! The food was visually beautiful, but needed and extra oomph of flavor levels for this garlic lover. I love that mocktails were available. The fruity refresher (whose name I forget) was sour, sweet, and everything I needed to revive from TX heat. As a boutique restaurant on the Denton Square, the high prices made sense, but portions could've been larger. He did not understand when I asked please bring my dinner with tortillas. He asked what kind I said maíz he responded corn I said yes The order took a long time with out order I had ribeye steak ion the menu it said steak cooked to order grilled vegetables and black beans He did not ask how do you want it cooked. My husband reminded him to ask me It had white rice grilled veggies and my corn tortillas Steak was good a little spicy with seasoning but best ribeye I have had. Hubby had fajita tacos black beans and white rice Tacos were like guisado meat bean and rice nothing to brag about. It was missing something We order 1 3 leche cake. GROSS. Cake was dry did not have 3 leches it was a dry piece of cake cut into cubes served in a martini glass with dolce de leche at the bottom. DO NOT ORDER it!!!!! The salsa and chips are so delicious. The beans and rice are probably the best I've ever had. I had the taco plate and while the short rib, one was nothing to write home about I did like the shrimp taco however, I know they say they make their own tortillas, but it really doesn't taste like it and there were only two shrimps on my taco when there should've been at least three. read more

Such a cute restaurant. It's what I imagine it would look like if Frida Kahlo owned a restaurant. Best churros I've had in a while! The chocolate dipping sauce is amazing and exactly what it should taste like plus it comes on a cute tray with a tiny ceramic bowl for the sauce. The guacamole is good but it is a large amount and also $16, so be prepared to share or eat a lot of guac. I got the tuna bowl. It was good but the tuna was cooked a bit more than what I was expecting. Usually it is just seared on each side and more raw inside but I imagine most people in Denton don't want that so they cook it longer. The house margaritas are fantastic and the bartenders know what they are doing. If I lived in town I would definitely go for cocktails, guac and churros with friends. Those were the highlights. Three of us ordered the combo enchilada lunch, one chicken, one short rib, served with beans and cilantro lime rice. Two of us substituted potatoes for the rice. Everything was delicious! The chicken enchilada had a green sauce, and the short rib had a red mild mole type sauce. We met the owner who told us everything is made from scratch, including the meat which they smoke. You can tell by the quality and flavor. The fourth ordered a burger and thoroughly enjoyed it. The decor is inviting, warm, and tasteful. We'll be coming back! read more

Went for a late lunch on Sunday, August 31. Service was TERRIBLE. Our very young server was not attentive at all, and addressed myself and my friend, both adult women, with diminutives "Love," "Beauty." It was rude. Oh, and whatever they're cleaning the tables with is toxic. I was leaning my elbows on the table to talk to my friend, and felt the skin coming off my right elbow while I was there. I am currently sporting scabs on both my elbows. Not Kidding. I have chemical burns on my elbows. Twice, another server tried to deliver food to our table, and was told, "We haven't even ordered yet." The food was okay. I'm not going to address the issue of price, as we knew it was going to be expensive and we chose to go there because it's a new place and we wanted to try it. The real issue was the service. July 18th 6pm dinner. Skip this place. I should have got a warning that says "no seasoning" when I ordered. Servers were great and attentive, Front desk was a pleasure, Decor looks great. I'm expecting the same when it comes to the food. Chips, salsa and bean dip were the only things with flavor. I got the ribeye comes with roasted corn and seasonal vegetables. I tasted some seasoning on the vegetables, like the water they were cooked in had some flavor. The fire roasted or grilled corn(forget which) was just...corn kernels on my plate, again no seasoning. The steak was cooked to a perfect rare but no seasoning, no salt, nothing. I got well cooked ingredients that tasted of themselves, not the meal I was looking for at all. Came to Mexican Oak for the first time after work during a Wednesday and the atmosphere was relaxing with only a handful of people there. When I arrived, I was informed it was happy hour so my cocktail was half off and beforehand knew they had 20% off for students (school ID required). As soon as I was seated water was brought out along with some salsa, refried black beans, and chips. Ordered the Flor de Durazno cocktail and really enjoyed it. I could really taste the peach favor within the cocktail which is what I was wanting. For my entrée I ordered chicken fajitas that came with a side of white rice and black beans. Was told that the side of rice and black bean was unlimited which was a nice surprise. Chicken needed something extra for me to say it was great, next time will ask for some lime to add to it. White rice was very delicious. Refried black beans that came with the chips was so good! The entrée came with a side of tortillas which I chose corn instead of flour. Didn't have any room for dessert but definitely look forward to ordering some next time. By the time I left the atmosphere was picking up. Food/meal prices on the menu are on the more expensive side so definitely a great place for a special occasion or a night out with friends looking for a nice sit down restaurant. read more

Don't know where to start. Took our name for waitlist to sit 4. Then noticed others walking in to ask for a table as we sat in front of the desk before until the manager asked if we were waiting! 25 min wait. All Food we ordered is either tasteless or so salty I drank 3 glasses of water. My dish was ice cold Acapulco Chicken and terrible. Left it. Waiting 20 mins to get flour tortillas for the ordered fajitas after asking 3 separate people to get them for us including our server and manager. Saw them in the reflection in the window of them hanging in the kitchen talking to other servers while they were "rushing our tortillas! " Unbelievable! After my controlled UPSET face they offered $10 dessert for a $135 check. Are you kidding me! Upset I wasted my money to try to support local business! Don't bother! read more
