We love the idea of 96 West. The idea is much better than the execution. Food is good, not over the top good, and the service leaves much to be desired. The proverbial millennial response of "No Problem", instead of Your Welcome is pervasive. Maybe we just didn't get the best of the wait staff, as while we looked around, it looked like some of the other wait staff was more attentive than ours. We requested lemons with our water (no lemons) and it took more than 5 minutes for our server to bring us cracked black pepper after we requested it--actually our server never brought it, we asked another server to bring it after the long wait. The martini my husband order was TINY for the cost! We'll give them another try--with lower expectations of the service. read more

Returning from Bush international airport at lunchtime this was a convenient stop right off I 45. Service was fast and friendly. Had the BLT with avocado. We came in from out of town and We were looking for a different restaurant but couldn't find it so we went here. The food was pretty good. Very pricey for the amount you got. We had 2 children with us and they do not have any children menus. So we had to pay 15.00 each for their meal. I don't think I have ever been to a restaurant without a child's meal. The server Robert H was decent and polite. They do charge a gratuity for 5 or 6 people. I think restaurants have gotten ridiculous counting the children so they can automatically charge gratuity. I probably would have left more than what they charged but when they add automatically I usually don't increase it. It reads on your check as a service charge. If service had been crappy I would not had paid that much tip. For 6, it was about 140. and only 1 person had a beverage. read more

We waited for a good while. We ordered the special of the day: tomato basil soup, the gnocchi pasta, and mashed potatoes.The tables around which came after us were served before. When the food came, the soup and the white truffle oil mashed potatoes were just bland. I needed to ask for salt to fix them, but nope... the food wasn't good. read more

They are trying but missing the mark. Cheese plate was overfilled; pita, blue cheese, fontina, a strange orange cheese, amazing pecans, fig ham, olives & mushy grapes. All of the cheeses were next to each other which meant they tasted of blue cheese, not a good thing for me but the hubby was happy. The nuts were the star and the pita didn't make any sense. Lentil soup was finished by hubby. My Side salad w creamy garlic (maybe, as I was still tasting blue cheese) had literally 1/2 of a red onion sliced into large strips, tiny seeded cucumber pieces, shredded carrots and sliced cherry tomatoes. Again, they are trying. Shrimp & grits was crazy. Unexpected and mostly uneaten. It contained shrimp, grits, yellow & red bell peppers, onion, asparagus, parmesan cheese, bacon, parsley and no sauce of any sort. Grits were corn bread like. It was strange. Hubby ate most of his smoked salmon pizza. Service was trying, atmosphere was the best part of the meal. read more

Surprisingly sophisticated menu. We ate at the bar, and the bartender was on point. He advised us not to order the chicken fried quail. Said he liked the bacon-wrapped quail much better. So we did. Also ordered the Asian beef wraps and Wedge Salad. And two Jack and waters. Quail were nice. Wraps were weird. More like taco meat + pico de gallo + peanut sauce to be rolled into romaine leaves. Hmmm. Wedge was fine, but seriously -- $15 for a wedge salad? Without a lot of bacon???? I've ordered wedges at lots of fine dining establishments and they were never that high. I'm glad we found a nice place to eat (we were traveling through) but I do think they are overpriced. read more

The restaurant was a lot smaller inside than it looks outside. The whole thing started off bad. We should have left. We were in line and a woman came and squeezed by us. We found out she was the hostess. She ignored all of us in line and was pitching a fit about something, to the point that one of the owners came to seat us. We were seated at a two person table that already had the menus and silverware set. The only problem was that the ac was blowing in the corner. We were shaking it was so cold. We ordered drinks, coke and beer. Half of the menu was marked no changes or substitutions. So that narrowed down what we could eat because of food allergies. I ordered chicken and waffles. My husband ordered chicken fried steak and biscuit with sausage gravy. Food took longer to come out than I thought it would. Food came out. My chicken was one long piece and three small pieces. Small as one bite pieces. The chicken was not but not greasy. My husband's chicken fried steak was chicken not beef, as the menu stated, and the outside was warm but the inside was raw. No one came to check on our food but it was just that the owner was walking around checking on dinners and my husband told her about his food. She apologized and then left for a little bit. She came back and said that she went to see if anyone else had ordered the chicken fried steak and found out that the other owner had ordered it. She offered to bring us some other items but we just shared my plate. She comped our dishes but charged us for the drinks. What really rubbed me the wrong way, was her telling us it wasn't the waitress fault. No kidding but she also didn't check on us after bringing out the food. We realized that this seems to be precooked food that is heated up after you order. If not, how could the food be raw on the inside but crispy on the outside with no oil showing on the crust. Just really disappointing because it looks like such a nice place. Again, the biggest disappointment was her telling us that it wasn't the waitress' fault so that she would still get a decent tip. I think they even watered down the coke because you could see through it. Really unhappy experience. read more

Went to this place back in November 2020. Sat at the bar with my wife. Bartender was great. Talked football. Food and service was great. Went April 2....reservation at 7:30 for 5. Was asked to sit outside until our table finished dessert. 8pm we are seated. Ordered drinks and food. Drinks came out. Ordered second round. No food. Over an hour and a half, food came out. Our waitress, Annie, was apologetic. Almost 2 hours to get food. Kitchen service is poor. Very sad to hear that they just got backed up. Will go somewhere else next visit to brenham. read more

One of my favorite new places, however, you have to go Brenham to enjoy it. The ambiance is She-She-La-La. Great tables, booths and bar stools, nice dark colors and perfect mood lighting. We had some incredible tappas. We tried the hummus, salmon patties, fried plantains and yucca fries. All very tasty and will try again. read more

Food is absolutely delicious! Had the roasted garlic hummus as an appetizer, very tasty and had enough spice to give it a little zing. Had the wagyu steak flatbread and smoked gouda macaroni as main course and side. Steak was tender, flatbread was crisp, and macaroni was creamy. Accompanied it all with a fabulous, smooth red wine (the name of which I forgot). And ended up taking a very yummy chocolate cake to-go. Great selection of food, wine, and drinks. Came from Austin and we attempted to eat here, however never got past the hostess stand. We had a party of 6 and while at the hostess stand we asked for a table for 6 (without being greeted or acknowledged). The girl looked at us with a very annoyed look on her face and then proceeded to scan her table guide with her middle finger. Looked at the manager and said we have a reservation and they will be showing up in 15 min. The manager then told us there was another restaurant around the corner. It was the most offending first experience at a restaurant I've ever had. Clearly they didn't want our business and funny to see a sign out front of the establishment that they do not discriminate. We were there 3 hours prior to their closing so not quite sure where we went wrong. They made it clear they didn't want our business. Surprising restaurant in downtown Brenham. The restaurant is nicely designed and is a great date/hang out place. I would expect this type of restaurant in Houston or Austin. There is inside and outside seating. The restaurant serves a large selection of wine and beer. The waitstaff was friendly, timely and was knowledgable about the menu and drinks. I ordered the flat iron steak with truffled mashed potatoes. The steak was cooked to order and delicious. I'm not a big fan of mashed potatoes, but I thoroughly enjoyed these. I will definitely revisit next time I'm in town to try the other dishes on the menu. My coworkers ordered the Tomatillo Pork Shank and they definitely enjoyed the dish. it was so good, that he raved about the dish all the way back to the hotel. read more

First I want to say our waiter did a great job. The roasted beet salad was very good. Then the flies showed up! Unbelievable! They no longer have the Sunday buffet. This is the new Sunday brunch menu. We got the lox flatbread and the cinnamon sugar donut holes. Both were very tasty. The vanilla honey butter doesn't have that much flavor. It needs more flavor or to become a cinnamon sugar dip. read more

I decided to do a last minute family day trip to Brehnam! Thought we would see the lovely blue bonnets in full bloom! We ended up in Downtown Brehnam and came upon 96 West! There was a bit of a wait as it was Easter Sunday. Glad that we waited and did not go elsewhere. We sat outside on the patio as the weather was stilll pleasant. I had a refreshing coca-cola and a kale salad with an addition of salmon. There was a good ratio of kale and other scrumptious items. The salmon was flavored well and moist! Ate all of it!!! We're currently looking for a place for a rehearsal dinner for the upcoming nuptials of our son and as we liked the look of 96 West we wanted to give it a try and went for lunch on a Saturday. One of the first things we noticed was the limited selection but as often a limited selection means that the chef has created intricate dishes we weren't worried. As an appetizer we ordered the stuffed pepadews and the lobster and crab nachos. The pepadews were good and the balsamic reduction rich and flavorful. The nachos however were not holding up to our expectations. The black bean puree was dry and overpowering and the dish was not warm throughout. As a main course we ordered sliders 44, the Cuban, pulled pork sliders and the bbq flatbread. Let's start with the good part - the flatbread - warm and tasty. The rest however was different. The sliders were all lukewarm to cold, the Cuban looked as if it had been soaked wet and then dried and had one pretty large piece of plastic inside. Fortunately large enough to be seen before swallowed. But the worst part came as we asked to talk to the manager. The first person we asked flat-out refused to call the manager, and when we asked someone else we were told that he would come soon. 5 minutes later he graced us with his presence and apart from being belittling and making excuses, his behavior can only be described as aggressive and threatening. We planned a bluebonnet peeping drive on Easter Sunday and wanted to stop in Brenham for lunch. We had called 96 West on Saturday to confirm they were open. Joseph, the bartender, was very helpful and told us to come as soon as they open at 11. He was right as the place was full by 11:30. And we found out why! It was delicious and the service was spot on! We had the spinach crepes and tomatillo chicken flatbread. Very flavorful. Our waiter, Austen, was attentive but not hovering. What a wonderful restaurant! We celebrated my birthday here last Saturday night. The service was amazing and catered to a long family talk in a cozy atmosphere. All of the food was delicious and the on tap house wine was very good. It had a clean taste to it. Our favorite dish was the Gouda Mac & cheese! Yum! The filet and mashed potatoes were delicious! Seriously, this is just fancy bar food with a half decent wine list. We stopped here for lunch at 3 PM on a Saturday. Food: 2 stars, enjoyable but over-hyped. Today's soup was Italian wedding soup, but it's definitely NOT. Not bad for bar food, but was really a tomato based stew with over-salted meatballs. The Salmon flatbread was decent for a college cafeteria. But too many capers making it too salty under too much cheese. What they called "pita" was really flatbread strips. Not bad, but not at all a pita. The quinoa salad was decent, but not great. Servers: Cheerful, knowledgeable, helpful, and efficient. I gave over 20% for a tip. . Ambience: very nice, somewhat "upscale casual" Maybe the chef was having an off day or didn't have the right ingredients. And maybe in a bar, I might have been happy that the food made me thirsty and appreciate the beer. But this is considered a restaurant, and I expect better flavors and ingredients So in spite of staff and ambience being great, allowing us to have a nice date with each other, that is not enough to move the rating up. Maybe to a three, but at the moment I'm not feeling generous to a fake restaurant. Bottom line: Not going back. read more

Love, LOVE this place! A perfect spot on Brenham's downtown square. Great atmosphere, friendly service (Joseph or Austin are the best), wonderful wine and beer on tap selection. Best of all~ Food is consistently very tasty!! We have been there several times since they opened. Sunday brunch is great.. I always get the Sweet Potato Hash. Great coffee as well! So yummy! Very fresh, very unique menu selections. Appetizers (love the Yucca fries w/ Chimchurri sauce), tapas (Mmm, Asian lettuce wraps), main entrees, flatbreads, salads, farm fresh soups and decadent deserts.
