Be very cautious. Get a second opinion. They charged $147.54 to diagnose my ants car running bad. They wanted $3,409.15 to fix my ants car. Most of what they said it needed had just been replaced. All they did was look at a book and not the car. We took it somewhere else to get a second opinion. It ended up just being a bad coil pack. It was $80 from Toyota and less then 1 hour to fix. It is a shame that you would try and charge these prices to an elderly women on a fixed income. read more

I took my 97 Dodge Dakota to them last summer to have an oil leak fixed. $1200.00. I still have an oil leak. Had my exaust manifold replaced this past Jan. It had a leak again. Was told by Sheldons Muffler shop that I was overcharged by about $400.00. And the right and left manifold each cost a different price. One was $229.00 and the other side was $313.00. Was charged $67.00 for flange, stud and nut plus bolts which should have come with the manifolds. Their bolt extraction labor was $275.66. Sheldon's would have only changed $20.00 to $30.00. I will never recommend A1 Custom but will I return. They took advantage of a senior who had to borrow money to fix my truck. I CALL BULLSHIT!!!!! read more

Yesterday I went to A-1 to get an inspection on my car. The shop on Fort and Sunshine. Months earlier I brought my car there to be pre-inspected and fix any problems ahead on the August inspection deadline that I might encounter. I asked about a suspension problem a mechanic at another garage told me about. The A-1 guy says, thats something we just say. I didn't think more about it. I was told by the A-1 mechanic after repairs were done that my car was now inspection ready. Well Thursday, my car fails the inspection for the problem that I have brought up previously to the A-1 mechanic told me my car didn't need. So today $460 later and now it passes. The point is, I won't be coming back. I don't want to second guess the guy who is working on my car and then say one thing but the truth is another. Trust is earned. I came there because I was told they do great work and they did great work. BUT I feel like my input was ignored. read more

Alright. I hate hate hate car repair shops. I am the quintessential girl telling the mechanic that the car is making "a funny noise." I'm not handy. And I'm sure I've been taken advantage of before. Therefore, it is always super important to me to find a good, honest, won't-treat-me-like-I'm-stupid mechanic shop. Here in Springfield, I'm sticking with A-1 Custom Muffler and Brake. The Awesome: 1. Every single person who works here has always been friendly to me. Every. Single. One. When I've been concerned about my brakes, the mechanic took the time to show me what he was talking about and WHY. They are always patient and kind. Always. 2. The people who work here are trustworthy. While I've never had any major repair or work done here, I usually ask them how the car's looking in general. And if, one day they tell me something is looking a little wonky, I'll probably believe them and trust them to fix it. 3. If you're like me, and only have the one car, the waiting room is small, but clean and nice. The restroom is also clean. 4. Open on Saturdays. If you work during the week, this is a biggie. The Less than Awesome but still totally worth it: 1. You're going to want to call and make an appointment. They are hella busy. And that's a GOOD thing, because other people trust them too! 2. They don't do EVERYTHING (like tires) but they will have reccomendations for you. The first time I came here was for a second opinion. I had gone to a big chain auto repair place and they had told me that my brakes were just in terrible shape and I needed a ton of expensive work done. My husband and I were DAYS away from closing on our first house and I was fretting about the expense. I walked into A1 and they looked over the car, came back in and were flippin BAFFLED as to why I was insisting SOMETHING must be wrong with the brakes. The man, (and I wish I could remember his name, he was so nice) finally told me, "Well, they're a little dirty. I could dust 'em off for you for a couple of dollars." And then I told them my little story. I was nearly crying with relief (Hey! I was super duper stressed. Don't judge.) And they were so nice, and now I make my appointments and see them when I need to. And my car is happy. And so am I. read more

This place is just fantastic. Everyone there is super nice, and they don't try to BS you; if they tell you something needs fixed, they send a picture and/or let you look at it yourself to prove that they're not just trying to up-sell you. They'll give you a full list of what needs fixed but they'll also tell you what you should take care of now and what can wait a while. They're usually pretty good about getting the work done quick but sometimes they can be pretty busy, but that's just cause they're so good. Definitely the best car place I've been to, and they're infinitely more trust-worthy than those big chain places who just want to sell you more stuff, whether you need it or not. read more

My daughter is a student at MSU. Her 18 year old car needed an oil change and a flush of the power steering fluid. She went to A-1 Custom Car Care and asked for those two things. Instead she got a bumper to bumper video and picture inspection. The service advisor, Macy, used hyperbole and scare tactics to convince her that she needed an entirely new steering rack, wheel bearings, new tires, sway bar end links, struts and a cleaning to find the source of yet unidentified leaks. They had turned what should have been $300 of easy business into over $3,000. I had to call and intervene. Macy used words like "dumping fluid" and "gushing fluid". Neither of those things were remotely true. She also claimed that several of these items would not pass a MO inspection and that she would not feel safe having her daughter behind the wheel of this car. This is classic deception and scare tactics and it's fraudulent when they convince others to do this. Further, they've caused emotional distress now for me and my daughter and she's afraid to drive the car. At the end of the call with Macy she agreed to do the front end link replacement, but when my daughter went to pick up the car, they had decided not to do the work. It was all or none. In the final "invoice", they yelled at me, in writing, using exclamation marks and all caps on certain words. Please do not take work to these people. read more

This is now my go-to place for auto repairs because I know I can trust them. My muffler fell down and was dragging the ground. They were able to repair it without having to replace the whole muffler. I took the car back the next week for an oil change and to see if I needed a tune-up since the engine was making a noise. They discovered I just didn't have enough oil and was able to take care of issues by replacing the oil. read more

My sister and I were on our way to Yuma, Arizona to visit our Dad when I lost the brakes on my Chevrolet Taho in Fort Leonard Wood, Mo. It was on Sunday, so of course nothing was open. I was able to "limp" it as far as Springfield before the brake warning light came on. We pulled into hotel parking lot and called TripleA, made an appointment for a tow truck to pick us up there at 7:30 a.m. Monday morning. The truck was there by 7:15 and he took us to A-1 to get the repairs. They had the truck up on the lift by 8:00 a.m. and had a diagnosis in about a half hour. The news wasn't good, every brake line under that truck was rusted horribly. (thanks to Michigan winter roads) Troy, the mechanic that did the work was the best. He had it all fixed and had us back on the road by noon. Everyone I met there was absolutely great. If I could, I would pack them up and take them to Michigan with me so I could have a great mechanic there. I would rate them a 15 out of 10. Awesome guys, honest and friendly as they could be. My husband has been using A-1 for years, so when I moved down here and needed a mechanic for my car, that's where he sent me. I have only been in a couple of times over the last two years, but each experience has been a positive one. The team there is really honest and takes the time to make sure they are addressing the right concerns. Most recently, I thought I needed to have my car inspected (inspection requirements are yearly where I am originally from) and they could have easily made a quick buck off of my ignorance, but instead, the woman at the desk informed me that here in MO, it's only required every other year, and even looked up my car's make year to make sure she was giving me the correct information. Really appreciated that! They do quality work and are very upfront about what needs done and how much it will cost, and if they can find a way to save you money, they will.
