I've been going to this shop for over 10 years, until yesterday I will no longer be going there anymore. My wife and I went there for a smog check, but instead we were greeted by the manager with a very hostile threatening behavior, he was loud and using foul language towards me and my wife, I'm not sure what he was going through on this particular day but that was totally uncalled for and unprofessional. I much prefer this place ad opposed to those overcharging lot at Quality automotive down the street. They always want to charge to remove the cover on my MBZ to access the plug wires. No other shop has ever charged me in the 15years I have had to smog this car. They were my back up smog place when ever A-1 was closed but I stopped going to quality after the second time they tried to charge me. Going to try A-1 tomorrow and get my day rolling. The old man that works here is lazy and told me to go fix some hoses on my van before he could smog. I left went to a smog shop a mile away and they smogged it in 20 minutes. He takes what is usually a very simple test and makes a dramatic production of the whole thing. I went there two years ago, and he was difficult to deal with, but he did the test. This is the worst experience I've ever had with a business. Here is my long story for those who want to read then gritty details: The older European man who works there seemed a bit off at first, I let it slide primarily because he was the only one working and there were a few customers waiting in line, so I can understand the stress. Then I noticed all of the little rude things he did; he didn't greet anyone, he basically threw the clipboard on the table while telling me to fill it out, and seemed irritated that there was a line of people waiting for a smog. A big truck pulled up for a smog, but the old man signalled that his truck was too high, and he waved his hand in a "shooing" motion, instead of walking up to the man and talking to him. By the time it was my turn, my car passed smog, but it failed the visual inspection. My car had an older model of a K & N filter and I required a "Carb stamp". Even though my car is stock with an aftermarket air filter, I guess California changed their last year and required it. So the old man told me to call K & N and have them send me a picture of it, but he wasn't going to pass my car. So I paid the man and left. A few hours later K & N called me back and had trouble determining if I really needed a carb stamp, and the smog technician should talk with them. I called the old man and he got angry and said K & N should handle this, and he would give me a refund if I wanted too. So I went back to the old man, (where it was now empty with no customers) and had the nice K & N lady on the phone ready to talk to him. The old man then refused to talk to her for whatever reason and got even more mad, yelling in whatever origin language he came from. The K & N lady and I coordinated with each other through pics and email right there on the spot, and she said that I did require the stamp. She gave me the carb # and said it was going to get sent to me tomorrow, and she wanted to talk to the smog technician to confirm the problem with him in order to have my car pass the visual inspection. The old man still didn't want to comply (while I had this lady wait for over 30 minutes on then phone). I was fed up and I politely asked for a refund. I told him I'll take my business elsewhere and he even refused my refund as well. So instead of taking the time to help smog my car, he took the time as to why he didn't have to give me my refund by pointing to a few old policies posted on his wall. I left before anything escalated higher, because I was done arguing with this old man. I'm honestly surprised this place is in business, and this old man has a license to work on cars. Do yourself a favor, save some time and take your car elsewhere. read more

Disgusting attitude I went to this place because of the reviews. 2004 Subaru WRX. The car had one aftermarket component which I wanted to point out and ask the technician about before smog testing. The tech called over the owner who had a terrible attitude from the second he turned around while working on another car. He instantly dismissed me and told me that he did not know what it was and anything aftermarket was an instant visual fail. Except for the aftermarket air filter which was ok. No problem, that is why I pointed it out before wasting anyones time. I told him I understood and clearly I needed to take the car home and reinstall the original part. I asked him if I needed to remove the exhaust system because it was aftermarket, he looked at me and sarcastically said said "Why do you ask me this, is it Cat back" I said yes, he said "then why do you even ask me such a thing?", I reminded him that 10 seconds earlier he told me that anything aftermarket relating to the intake or exhaust was an instant fail. Then with a disgusting/ ridiculous tone told me that I needed to bring in documentation that the exhaust was legal, or he would not pass the car. At this point I knew that there was clearly not a match, but for some reason the guy wanted to continue berate me as I left. Rambling on and on about all of the documentation I needed to have the car pass smog, which then included the K&N drop in air filter that was initially a non issue. Only hiccup was that my TomTom GPS directed me to 236 El Camino Real, South San Francisco instead of 236 El Camino, San Bruno. I brought my car here a few months back to get my smog done. Great place to smog. The owners here are friendly and know their stuff. They are 100% legit, and won't try to rip you off (see my review on Quality Tune-up on El Camino Real, literally 1/2 a mile from here). DIESEL'S BEWARE, NEVER BRING YOUR CAR HERE I wish I could give these guys no stars. First I take my diesel truck in for a smog check and i'm waiting an hour in the waiting room before someone even helped me. Then when I finally get some help they plug my truck up to the computer and the guy tells me that I have to drive my truck around for an hour on the city street and then drive 40 miles on the freeway and then come back. At this point it was 2:30pm so I walked out of the place and wasted a quarter of my 34 gallon gas tank driving around only to come back and be told the f-in place is closed! I almost went off on these guys, horrible customer service and lazy workmanship. I will NEVER come here again, and i'm going to tell everyone I know to never give these guys business! Had my vehicle smog done twice at this location. Due to parts and labor, 30 days had passed sense my initial smog. Had to pay the price again. Two months later I receive a notice in the mail that my vehicle registration is overdue. I went to speak with the old man who runs the shop and he explained that "sometimes his machine doesn't work". He told me to go to the DMV myself with the paper work. So, $120 and a new catalytic converter later. I'll be going to the DMV on my day off to stand in line. Not only is this guy very rude he is dishonest!!! Don't be fooled by the online discount coupons - he will cost you more in the long run. My daughter brought her car to him with the check engine light on and instead of telling her up front that it will not pass he took her money and just ran the test blindly. She obviously failed then was obligated to go back to him which I refused. I had the car cleared and passed for smog and asked for a refund of my $50 and he refused. Total sheister!!! I needed to get a smog cert for my car registration. With shelter in place I was not sure what I could find and what kind of pricing would be out there. I called a couple of shops this morning and all were priced pretty high. I called A-1 and he quoted a good deal and I could walk-in. No appointment was needed. I went right after work. When I arrived the tech was very nice and friendly. He is well organized as there were two customers in front of me. He finished each person in order. I have no idea how this place received any 5 star reviews! The old man that runs this place is a complete scum bag! Extremely rude, disrespectful and unprofessional from the start! I went here for a smog test and no greeting when you walk in the door, the old man just says "Give me your paperwork." I sit at the desk and he slams the paper on the desk and tells me to fill it out. After waiting about 20 mins, the old man gives me the bad news that my car failed. I asked him why and he yells at me as he points to a poster on the wall and says "read the poster!" He told me that he knows what the problem is but, by law, he can't tell me. I got a free retest but failed again and had to deal with the guy a second time. There are many places out there that are much cheaper and actually care about their customer service. Great service. Fast. Very hard-working and professional. Price was fine. I would recommend this place. Some of the previous reviewers have said they don't like the man's attitude. No, he won't smile at you and get you a Teavana. He doesn't have Wifi and he doesn't have Bo Concept chairs to sit in. But he will get you in and out as quickly as he can. Just follow his routine. And, lets be practical, this is a smog test. It's a CA annoyance and necessary. Just get it done. The older Russian man who works here is completely rude and I would most definitely NOT recommend coming here. He's unprofessional, he wouldn't sign me off even though the I had the manager of a part company on the phone ok-ing the part. He refused to talk to her AND refused to give my refund! I called at 3:10pm today to ask whether I could get a smog check done before they closed at 4pm. The guy: Well, that depends. When are you coming? Me: I'm in Millbrae right now but I'll head over now. Guy: Oh, ok. That should be fine. So I head down there, but I guess in the fifteen minutes between my phone call and my arrival, another car showed up for a smog check. When I pull in, the guy walks up to my car and points at the other one and says that he's only staying 15 minutes more to finish the other car, then he's going home. "You can come back tomorrow," he says to me. Suffice to say, I was pretty upset. I totally understand that it was a dreary, cold Saturday and the guy didn't want to stay any longer than he had to. I was mostly upset because he told me it was okay to come, then when I spent the time to go, he turned me away because going home was more important. I thought it was a bad form to promise something and not do it in turn; I would have appreciated his honesty in just telling me to come back tomorrow over the phone, so that I didn't have to waste that time. Another smog check would have taken him 15 minutes, but instead they lost my business and the potential business I could've given him in the future. Instead, I gave my business to 76 down the block, who promptly gave me (and HONORED) my appointment and a smog check within 45 minutes. Perhaps A-1 does a good job, but I will never know because of their poor customer service. I highly recommend 76 down the block instead, who will actually take your patronage seriously. read more
