I picked up an antique bookcase, recently, to fill a spot that needed something unique and it had to be oak and preferably quarter sawn. OK...so I'm picky. I found it in Irwindale and when I picked it up I realized that it was in just OK condition. Sturdy and not falling apart but needed some love. A&A did an amazing job in bringing it back to life. Our 1930's Hand Stenciled Mahogany door was damaged by a tenant's dog. The first refinisher called wanted to strip the door inwhich we would loose the original tri-colored stenciling completely. Jose at A & A Antique came and was open to trying to save the stenciling right away. He is thoughtful, methodical even and careful - his staff friendly and cooperative. I did need to confirm each conversation due to the difference in language and check in to see how the work was coming. He insisted that we come by to check on the work to make sure we were happy with the final results before he delivered it back to us. They have to be drinking on the job... As the manager of a vintage furniture shop on Long Beach's "Retro Row," I've had a number of run-ins with A&A over the years. Let me list a few of the issues we've had with this gaggle of clowns who must dare each other to work blindfolded. -misplaced hardware (numerous times) -stained an entire credenza the wrong color -project completed weeks behind schedule (numerous times) -botched reassembly (just about every time) -different portions of the same piece with different quality/type of finish We consciously avoided taking pieces to A&A for over a year and preferred to perform our restorations in-house to assure quality. However, we recently came into possession of a few designer pieces we lacked the means to properly restore. We sent them to A&A, accompanied with the usual prayers and incantations that they wouldn't botch the job entirely. If there is a God, he took the form of Caesar at that moment and gave us a thumbs-down. What we got back from A&A was a haphazard mess that would make Jackson Pollock blush. I spent hours reassembling a bar cart on which the brasswork had been reinstalled upside down, followed by performing extensive touch-ups to the middle-schooler-in-shop-class quality work. If you presented the incompetents at A&A with an unassembled dresser from Ikea they'd staple the instructions to their own foreheads, install the drawers in the trunk of your car, and get arrested for inside trading: they screw up in directions you didn't even think possible. read more

Short version: Though their website promises free in-home estimates about 10 times, I could never get anyone to give me one. Long version: I have a number of antique furniture pieces that were damaged in a recent move. I used a self-packing moving company, which doesn't offer insurance - they didn't pack it, so why would they guarantee its safe arrival? So, before the move, I called the company that provides my renter's insurance (MetLife - they get an A++ in his whole affair) and was assured that my possessions would still be covered while in transit. The movers who packed up our trailer did an appalling job (but that's another, longer, angrier Yelp review waiting to be written), and a lot of scratches, gouges and dents ended up in the antique wood furniture that used to belong to my grandmother. I call MetLife and they quickly assign my case to an adjuster, who gets in contact with me in an extremely timely manner and tells me I need to get an estimate for the cost of the furniture repairs. I do an internet search and discover that A & A not only promises free in-home estimates, but is practically next door to my new place. Finally a break in my luck over this move, I think. I stop into the shop (something the website welcomes you to do) and speak with a friendly employee who says that Jose will need to call me. The employee takes my name and number and sure enough I get a call the next day. I make the apparent mistake of saying that my furniture was damaged during a move (even though I never say that I am dealing with any moving company over the damage claim, and instead say I am working with my insurance), so instead of scheduling a time to come give me the estimate so repeatedly promised on the website, Jose refers me to Ty (of Drake Claim Service), whom he assures me is part of his company. So I call Ty and he tells me it will be $150 to have him come out and do an estimate. This - obviously - is far from free. However, he does say I can send him pictures and he will do a free estimate. Okay, this is not ideal, but I am willing to work with it. I take about 80 pictures (lots of little damage to each item along with some bigger bits), upload them to a sharable photo site and email Ty the link. He writes back to say that the damage seems extensive, that he will have to come out and see it for himself, and that his estimate will cost $175 for the first page and $50 per additional page. He tells me: "Usually, the moving company provides you with loss & damage claim forms for you to fill out, which is then sent back to the customer service or claims department of the moving company. They will assign a repair firm like myself to contact you to survey the damages. Normally, we would be paid by the moving company. You may want to advise the moving company to make sure you are going to be reimbursed for our fee." I write back and remind him that I am not working with the moving company since they have no liability in this matter, but say I will ask my insurance adjuster if they can cover the estimate. I contact my insurance adjuster and she says they do not normally pay for estimates. So, I write to Ty again and tell him that I cannot afford to pay for the estimate myself (having just spent a crapload of money to have all my personal possessions battered in a huge cross-country move). I remind him that A & A promises free in-home estimates and ask whether there are any circumstances under which he could actually provide me with one of those. He simply never responds. Okay, I think to myself, maybe there's just been confusion. They thought I was working with a moving company, so they were trying to do things the way they do with the moving companies. Perhaps if I can just get back in touch with Jose and clarify that I just need a regular old estimate (MetLife did not request anything elaborate), he can walk the three doors down to my building and give me that estimate... So I call the number on the website and speak to what sounded like the same employee who I saw when I stopped in. He is as kind as the first encounter and takes down my name and number and tells me Jose will call me. That was two days ago - haven't heard from anyone yet. In the meantime, my insurance adjuster called yesterday to check up on my progress and when I explained the situation, she managed to get someone from Furniture Medic to call me within a couple of hours and set up a free in-home estimate for next week. MetLife - 1000; A & A - 0. I don't understand how it could possibly be so difficult to obtain a service A & A advertises so strongly on their website! Given the amount of damage done and the fact that I had every intention of hiring them to repair it once I'd gotten my estimate, you would have thought the short walk to my apartment would have been worth it... read more

We had damage to some very old pieces when we moved to the Long Beach area. The moving company found A&A. They were at my house the next day to assess the damage and give us a quote. The moving company approved the price and A&A picked everything up the same day. Six days later they returned our furniture in perfect condition. This week was my second time taking some furniture to be repaired at A & A. The first time was well over a year ago and it was a vintage coffee table from the 60's. They did a great job keeping the original structure but at the same time reinforced the legs the way they needed to be. I was really happy. This week I took a crappy arm chair that my household came attached to so we decided to fix. They not only fixed it, they totally rebuilt the support frame, even adding braces where the original construction of the chair from the manufacturer lacked. AND the told me it would be about three days, they called me in two. All for under 100 bucks. These guys know their stuff. Big ups to Jesus and Jose. Will always bring my furniture here. read more

I have been in contact with the owner, Jose regarding the restoration of pieces for one of my clients. He was interested, so I sent photos and dimensions. However, after sending the email multiple times over the course of 20 days, he does not respond. If you can't get estimates, I definitely would not trust him with the furniture. He knew the pieces needed to be completed by mid-June, so by not responding to the emails, I presume it meant he wasn't interested...now that's what I really call professional. read more

I had searched for places to get my husband's childhood antique bedroom set stripped and painted for my daughter's room, when I came across A&A (the only place in LBC) I was curious to see if their reputation on Yelp lived up to what it was made out to be. Not only were they the most reasonable quote we got, but Jesus and Jose were so knowledgeable, accommodating, and patient. I was extremely indecisive on the color I wanted. After many trips there with different swatches, I finally decided. They got two dressers and a nightstand finished in just under a month! I was so impressed at the finished product. More recently he not only refinished my antique dining table and chairs, but he built two new leaves to add to the length of the table, and they look like they came with the table! I couldn't believe how beautifully he matched the woods. He has always come to my house and given me an estimate, and kept to the time frame he predicted would be needed. Beware of these people! Their website says they will come out for a free estimate & they don't! When I called to have them come look at a chest the owner Jose asked me to email him pictures instead, which I sent him that day. After 3 weeks of no response I contacted him again & he had me resend the photos. When he looked at the pictures he told me it would cost about $200 and 2 weeks to refinish, I said I would let him know in a few days what I decided. Jose then called and left me a message the next day stating he didn't remember if he gave me an estimate but it would cost $450. I called him back to see how the cost could more than double in less than 24 hrs since we spoke & he didn't have a good explanation. I told Jose that if he had come out for the estimate that his website promises this mess could have been avoided. Since my experience with Jose & this company were "sketchy" at best I opted to look for another company that does what its website promises & doesn't double their estimate the day after they give you one. read more
