I had a very unfortunate experience. I was headed to buy a car that was promised to me by Kim and when in route, she sold it to someone else. Shocking after giving her word that she would sell me the car I had known one other person who had an issue with her over car and told me that she had been dishonest, but I didn't believe them until I had my own experience with her of intentionally deceiving me about a car I didn't believe the other person's experience until this happened to me I could not recommend them they're very expensive and after this incident of dishonesty, I don't trust them read more

I own two older Volvo's (240's) and do most of the work on them myself. When each needed rear, main oil seals, I hunted around for a mechanic I could trust. (Tough job to do by myself under jack stands.) This place is where every Volvo owner should go to have his/her Volvo repaired. Van and his wife, Kim are  knowledgeable, honest, personable and are as trustworthy as they come. The work gets scheduled and completed in a timely fashion. They are both excellent communicators and the job is done neatly and competently....better than anyone else could perform it. Don't bother looking elsewhere for this kind of Volvo service. A rare find. Volvo is their specialty. If you have a Volvo and live in Southern CT, don't go anywhere else. They have a clean shop (if the mechanic doesn't treat their own shop well, why would you expect any more care for your car) and are friendly and honest people. I have been to five different mechanics in the New Haven area for my 1998 S90 with 120,000 miles and this place is the only one that never tried to suggest a repair I didn't come in for, and the only one whose work was done 100% right the first time, everytime. read more

"Check Engine" light came on on my 2008 Volvo XC70. I called and was able to bring the car over the same day. Computer read cylinder misfires and I was able to leave it overnight. The next morning they replaced the spark plugs, air filter and cabin air filter--refilled the windshield washer fluid too--for a reasonable price (called the dealer and their estimate was $200-$700 more). They called me just after noon to let me know my car was ready for pick up. read more

I have never encountered a better mechanic shop, and doubt I ever will. In fact, I created a Yelp account just to post this review. If you live in Connecticut, A&M is the ONLY place to take your Volvo. I had an ABS issue with my 2004 XC90. I took it to the dealer, and they wanted more $$$ than the car was worth to fix it. I took it to a local mechanic, he read the ODB readout, scratched his head and just told me to sell it. A&M on the other hand was both KNOWLEDGEABLE and AFFORDABLE. Since they only work on Volvos, they had seen the same problem before. And because they aren't a dealership, they were able to recommend a value-add solution that involved replacing a few parts, and sending out the main control unit to a specialty vendor for a rebuild. I cannot stress how helpful, knowledgeable and professional Kim and her husband are. A&M is truly a diamond in the ruff...a family run business (their son is in training at the shop) that specializes in Volvos and prides itself on honesty and the quality of their work. read more

I drive my cars until they fall apart. I like to get as many miles as I can out of my cars. My last car was a Toyota Camry and I had over 300K before I decided to get rid of it (cost of minor repairs were worth much more than the car) although it was running fine. I looked around and found out that older Volvos run forever and furthermore parts are easily available and inexpensive. You can buy a nice used Volvo with lots of features, excellent safety features and reliability for not much money at all. The only downside is that they are not open on the weekends and evenings. I decided to look for a used Volvo and I really wanted a mechanic to inspect the car prior to purchase. Every person I met who drove an older Volvo told me of A&M. So before even looking for a car, I drove down and spoke to one of the owners. She knows a lot about Volvos! (By the way they only work on Volvos, which is what I prefer--expertise). She recommended many different Volvos--but for my requirements it looks like the non-turbo rear wheel drive Volvos were the best for me. I found a Volvo 940, had them check it out and then had them do some repairs on it. First of all, their prices are terrific. They are quick and they treat me like family. I met them first last November and they treated me like I had been going there for 20 years! You will not find service like this anywhere (unless you pay triple!). For example, my grille was broken and they had an extra one and put it on for NOTHING. Then a second time, my exhaust was making a funny sound and I saw a loose bolt. They put it on the lift and fixed it for FREE. I also brought my mother's Volvo here and they took care of her as well--clearly telling me what it needed and not trying to sell me things I don't need all at an excellent price! Just talk to the customers who come in and out and you will see people who are having love affairs with their Volvos and their mechanic! The folks at A&M are warm, friendly, honest, and genuine. Their prices are reasonable and I recommend them to any Volvo owner. read more

I recently traveled to New Haven for work - a 5 hour trip - and the brakes on my 2012 Volvo started making grinding noises about a half hour from my destination. I took my car to A&M early on Monday morning, and they replaced the brakes by Monday afternoon. They also made a few extra minor adjustments at no additional charge. What a lifesaver! My husband jokes that we should start taking my car to Connecticut once my mechanic at home retires! read more

A&M Foreign Car Services is a family owned and operated business located at 313 Forbes Ave in New Haven. They specialized only in Volvo cars. I have two Volvos, 240DL 188k (1989) and S60 149k (2002) The 240 DL was bought new as far back as 1989 from M &E Volvo of Meriden which is now Gengras Motors. Since I bought the car, A&M Foreign cars have been servicing the car and I have not had any problem with the car. The second car S60 was bought used. After running the car for three months, it started developing problems with the cooling system requiring topping the coolant every two days. I took the car to Van for diagnosis. He took care of everything that was wrong. The car runs like new. They have a clean shop, wear uniforms and are friendly and honest people, especially the wife.
