I was impressed at how efficient, organized, fully stocked and how huge their team was for an event! We had made tie dye shirts at home earlier this year with a store bought kit so it was nice to have such an array of colors available. The packaging was also efficient and glad they provided us a ziploc with instructions to continue the process at home. We absolutely loved how they turned out! The owner, who happens to resemble Jerry (You know you all want to say that!) has opened up a shop fully made outta love. Her had tie dyes everywhere. He has pictures of the Grateful Dead everywhere. This is not just a clothing shop. You can actually go and tie dye your own shirt there and he will ship it to you. You tell him the design you want and he folds up the shirt for you and provides you with a ton of colors to use. So fun! read more

This place is sooo SANTA CRUZ! The guy that runs the store is super friendly and apparently the tie-dye master of the Universe, if there was one! I think the may have traveled with the Grateful Dead or other rock groups and probably has some interesting stories to tell. I bought a kit to do tie dye at home (Stay-in-Shelter times), and it was very well-assembled with great directions and high quality dyes and even a protective cloth. It would be cool to sit around a camp fire and just chat all night. For your shirt you pick from several designs...mine had a heart in the middle...Jeremy helps you every step of the way. He folds your shirt for your chosen design and puts on the rubber bands. He helps you pick colors and when you're done, he will wash, dry and mail to you. This is one of those older santa cruz shops that ....well, it's weird, artistic, creative (within the limitations of the medium used), and loving places that used to be the hallmark of the area. Parking is street only like pretty much everything downtown that just means there is no parking. There is however a number of surface lots and garages scattered around with a few blocks, which alas you'll have to pay a small fee for. This is for the most part a shop what sells anything that can be tie dyed. this includes men's suits, dresses, stuffed animals, curtains, and anything made of cloth that can be worn. Don't know what tie dye is? come down to the shop and speak with Jeremy. They also have tie dye classes that you can schedule by yourself, for couples, or groups up to any size where you will learn and create tie dye clothing, all materials included. I actually know how to tie dye but while it's not a terribly hard thing to learn how to do, doing it well can be surprisingly difficult. At this spot you'll be able to create something vibrant and artistic, as opposed to the muddled sloppy stuff i usually create when I'm at home unsupervised. If that just sounds like too much work, just pop in and pick out some of the nearly infinite ready made stock. Pricing is variable depending on the size of the group, and what you want to do, but generally speaking you can totally pick up some awesome super bright clothing for 20-40 bucks. i also feel like Jeremy totally deserves a shout out here, as this place would not be the same without him. He's a retired deadhead, which may mean nothing at all to some of you, but for others that will mean everything. If you can get him talking, he's like a one man time machine, in the best possible way. Overall this is a must do if you want some colorful beach clothing, or just need something casually colorful or even flashy. Stumbled upon Jeremy in Felton and returned to his warehouse the next day. Purchased a dress for our 4 year old and she literally wore it for three days straight. Jeremy was super kind to the older daughter, patient with me as I needed to tend to the baby and even helped me get the dog back to the car. He has the best stories about traveling around the country as a Dead Head, selling his apparel to Grateful Dead fans across the country. He shared some especially touching experiences about how he met members of the Dead and could recount minute details about times that he shook their hands and had conversations with them. It's amazing how Jeremy has managed to make a living off of his passion. Not only does he run the store in the heart of Downtown Santa Cruz off of Pacific, which is becoming increasingly commercialized with stores like The Gap, but he also offers tie dye making and teaches die dye at birthday parties and festivals. This was a hoot. I happened to park in front of this place in downtown Santa Cruz, and as an "auntie" with a 5-year-old in tow, this seemed like a delightful activity for us to do together that afternoon while mommy had to work. My memories of tie-dye consist of putting a fork in the middle of a white t-shirt, spinning it like trying to neatly spool spaghetti for a big bite, then wrapping the shirt in a rubber band and dousing it in four primary colors and hoping for the best. Oh, and then wearing it to one (or five) Dead shows. This is different. In a good way. All the playfulness, joy, creativity, pride, and fun of my youth doing tie-dye but with a waaaaaay more resilient outcome. First, there is a wide variety of items to choose from to tie-dye, not just a plain T. Second, the dyes come in a variety of colors and hues. Next, everything is pre-treated (not chemically, don't worry... they show you exactly what they do!) to make sure that the color saturates and stays there (unlike some of the runny messes I used to make 20 years ago). Finally, the instruction is amazing and age appropriate. The 5-year-old I was with wanted to make a rainbow on a sundress. Two other girls there with their mom and grandma wanted completely different patterns and colors on different style shirts. Everyone was shown how each item was wrapped differently to achieve their desired look and was given guidelines about colors, but then also given the freedom to complete the process however they were inspired to do so. Gloves, newspaper, bottles of dye with pointed tips for better control... we walked out clean! Unfortunately, we didn't get to walk out with our final product... but that is also part of the process. It must set, get washed there on site, and be picked up the next day. It is all for the best to keep from taking it home and creating a personal big dye mess, since they clearly know what they are doing at "A Brighter World," but the suspense was tough! Other notes (from a periodic visitor to Santa Cruz): - Parking in the area seems to be mostly paid/meters. - This store also sells tie-dye items, if you just want to buy something quintessentially "Santa Cruz," but really, why not make it yourself for the same price?? - This is a creative idea for a small birthday party for kids. read more

Bring a group or party and come home (same day) with one of a kind items that YOU made. The front of the store has already-made items for purchase and the tie dye station is in the back (with many color choices - maybe 10 to 15?). We were looking for something fun to do when visiting my 21 year old who lives and works in Santa Cruz. Happened upon A Brighter World - called Jeremy (the owner/tie-dye master) and made arrangements. We weren't sure what we were getting into but had SUCH A FUN EXPERIENCE! First, you make an appointment to go to the shop. There you see a myriad of tie-dye patterns and get to select what speaks to you. You get a blank canvas in the form of - t-shirts for kids and adults, bandana, overalls, pants, dog t-shirts - you name it!!! Then Jeremy shows you how to create your pattern. You put on gloves, and get started with a selection of about 40 colors - all vibrant and beautiful. Next day, after he finishes the processing, you pick up your amazing creations. Great activity for kids! My son found it walking down the street and he figured out somehow that he could make a tie-dye shirt, not just buy one. I remember making one in the 70's, but we just tied it up with rubber bands and dipped in in a bowl with color. They didn't turn out like this one! Anyway, where can you go to do tie-dye now? It takes about an hour, give or take, but it was so worth it. The owner was so nice and great with kids. Seems to love what he's doing and has a great deal of experience. He does tie-dye right! He uses top of the line powered dyes which he mixes for a large variety of colors. He gives you time to choose a design while preparing the item of clothing you choose. This is done to ensure the colors stays true. He shows you how to wrap the shirt for the design and helps choose colors, but encouraged my nine year old to dye it himself. When it's done, he washes it with a special soap to set the colors better, dries it, then had it mailed to us since we didn't live in the area. We got it the long sleve tie-dye a few days later and my son loved it soooo much he DIDN'T TAKE IT OFF FOR 2 DAYS! Ha ha! He wore it to school, to bed, then the next day too. He wanted to wear it a third day but I put my foot down. All this for $30 plus tax and a small fee to have it mailed. What a deal for a lesson and a shirt! I wish we lived in the area so we could have his birthday party here or a Boy Scout Activity. What a great gift for all the kids to bring home and then they could wear it to school or their pack meeting to remember the party together. (Better than Chucky Cheese for sure!) read more
