I saw this Yelp page a long time ago when searching for a routine vet, and loved the thought of not needing to take my nuggets into a stressful, scary vet's office in the end. I kept the name of the business in the back of my mind, dreading the day when I would need to use them. Well, the time finally came, and I knew I wanted my little Lacie to pass peacefully on her favorite spot: the heat pad on the couch. Dr. Nicole called us about 15 minutes before the scheduled appointment and let us know her arrival time. When she showed up, she was the nicest, most gentle person ever. She immediately put us at ease with her calm demeanor and asked us all about Lacie and our life with her. When we were ready, the process was gentle, peaceful, and pain-free. If she had to leave us, I take solace in the fact that it was in her spot while I held her. Afterwards, we immediately received a foam paw print and were offered some hair and whisker clippings. Lacie was wrapped cozily in a basket and her brother got a chance to say goodbye before she was transported away to a water cremation. We poked a hole in the paw print and turned it into a Christmas ornament that we hung on our tree. A few days later, we received a beautiful eulogy Dr. Nicole wrote, and we were blown away by the amount of detail she picked up during her short time with us. We then received a card the next week with a personal note from her. I truly appreciate how she genuinely cares about her job, clients, and the animals. It somehow made an impossible decision a little more manageable. I do not typically write reviews, but I feel compelled to share our experience. Recently, we made the difficult decision to euthanize one of our cats after her long battle with kidney disease. She was diagnosed at just over one year old, and through consistent treatment--including subcutaneous fluids and daily medication--we were fortunate to have twelve additional years with her. Despite her illness, she remained a happy and well loved companion until her condition progressed to stage four kidney failure. At that point, she stopped eating, became extremely weak, and we knew it was time to say goodbye. Based on recommendations and several phone conversations, we chose to use the services of A Gentle Goodbye. When the veterinarian arrived, the procedure was explained to us: an initial intramuscular injection to induce sleep, followed by a second injection once she was unconscious. We were told the first injection would be a brief pinch and would work quickly due to faster absorption. Unfortunately, the intramuscular injection caused our cat severe pain. She cried out and, despite her weakness, we had to restrain her. This was deeply distressing, as it meant her final moments were not peaceful. While we understand there is no way to change what happened, this experience was anything but "gentle." Afterward, I spoke with Dr. Lyles to discuss alternatives so others might avoid a similar situation. She explained that severely ill animals may sometimes react this way due to sensitivity or chemical imbalances. She was absolutely amazing. I would tell her on a daily basis that I'm thankful for her and grateful for every single day I had with her. Unfortunately she developed kidney disease at a very young age and we treated her for 12 years, giving up everything for her whether it be vacations or weekend getaways, and if anybody asked, I would tell them she was worth it and she deserved a chance at life. We dedicated our lives and made sacrifices for her. Anyone with a special-needs pet would understand.. Eventually, It came to the end when she progressed to stage four and there was nothing more we could possibly do. We had exhausted all our efforts and decided that we had no other choice. She was not passing on her own. Because she would get so upset going to the vet, we decided to use A Gentle Goodbye, which meant she wouldn't need to endure going to the vet. Our experience was very traumatic, and if I had read all of the reviews I would have realized that we are not the only ones that had a traumatic experience with this business. There was another person who had a dog and went through the same painful, excruciating situation that we went through. We had reached out to a gentle goodbye, and it was not a gentle goodbye Far from it, my poor baby suffered, and this was a cat that had been given fluids on a regular basis and was a trooper. For people who are not familiar with kidney disease, she was getting subcutaneous fluids; which means she was getting a needle put under her skin to give her Lactated Ringers to keep her hydrated, so she was used to getting needles. We were told it was going to be a slight pinch, which is what she was used to, and this was not!! She had fluids the night before to keep her as comfortable as possible, and she did not react at all to having a needle go into her skin, but the injection that was given by the vet made her to scream out in pain This was not a cat that was faint of heart. We thought we were doing the right thing and my baby screamed and it was awful and it traumatized her sister. We thought we would have them come to our house to make it easier on all of us and it was not. I wish I could turn back time and unfortunately, I can't. I'm hoping to save others. You'll have to make this decision. There are better ways. She did not have to go through this. They gave her an intermuscular injection that caused significant pain. She screamed out in pain and her sister had to hear her who also started crying. It was a horrendous, awful experience, and I have to live with the guilt that I chose the wrong place. There are better ways. I know they told the gentleman who lost his dog that it was painful because they were so far gone. Instead, the pets regular veterinarian could prescribe oral sedation before they give the injection. Instead the pet is given an intramuscular because it is faster even though it can be very painful. The impression is that the intramuscular injection is being used because it is faster than subcutaneous so that they can "get it over with" and move on to the next. I thought when she was diagnosed 12 years ago, it was the worst day, but nothing can compare to what we went through on her last day It was a horrendous, traumatic experience, and I am devastated, and I have to live with this guilt I feel awful for taking care of my baby for 12 years and doing anything that I possibly could for her and in the end I failed her. Find someplace else. My heart goes out to anyone that needs to make this decision. read more

I can't recommend A Gentle Goodbye enough. I first called in late March to make an appointment for at-home euthanasia for our 15.5 year old dog. The appt was all set for 4/5/24. The woman I spoke to on the phone was so patient and explained everything. On Sat. 3/30, our dog took a turn and I was concerned she would not make it to 4/5. It was too late at night to call so the next morning (Easter Sunday) I called and left a voicemail. Kaelani (sp?) called me back within 15-20 min and I asked if there was any way to expedite our appt. She re-scheduled for the next day and was also very accommodating and patient. Dr. Sam Landry came to our house the next day as scheduled. She was such a calming presence for our family. And I think choosing the option of at-home euthanasia is the best option for the comfort of your pet during the process and your own after the fact. There are a few companies out there offering this service in Chicago, and we went with this particular one after a review of the reviews and speaking with Dr. Juliana. It helped me decide it was the right thing to do and I hope this review helps others in making an informed decision in a difficult time. We had to say goodbye to our family cat of 19 years and two months. She had entered the final stages of CKD. We were offered euthanasia services at an emergency vet but declined. We simply weren't ready to let go. I asked for at-home options and A Gentle Goodbye was listed among others. We liked the idea of at-home euthanasia as we didn't want her final moments to be in an unfamiliar place surrounded by other pets in distress. A Gentle Goodbye ensured that my dog, Hotshot, died at home in my arms. 14 years ago we bought Hotshot online. He came to us from AK and when we picked him up at O'Hare, he didn't want to come out of his little crate. He was scared after a long plane ride. We finally got him out and I held him on my lap on the car ride home. For 14 years, he was my shadow, but never more than during the pandemic. The pandemic had a silver lining because I got to work remotely for two years and spent so much magical time with Hotshot. He had a heart condition that was found ~ 5 years ago. He was put on Vetmedin and his medical problems seemed stable. He saw his cardiologist every 6 months. In December 2021, the cardiologist heard some crackling and started him on a low dose of Lasix. Suddenly he wouldn't eat, could barely move, and we didn't know what was wrong. My cousin was his vet and when she ran a renal panel he was heading towards renal failure. Because of his heart condition he could not be overloaded with fluids as he could then go into heart failure. He was admitted to a nearby pet hospital and home within 24 hours. But he was never the same dog. He always loved to eat and banged his bowl at 6 am and 4 pm to alert us he was hungry. Now he wouldn't eat, even with an appetite stimulant. We tried a lot of different foods. Never would eat his dog food again. One day he would eat chicken and rice. Then the next day he wouldn't want that but he would eat ground beef and sweet potato. Every day was a new challenge and I was heartbroken because I knew he was deteriorating. He turned 14 in February and we joyfully celebrated his birthday knowing it would be his last one on earth. I researched pet hospices and found A Gentle Goodbye. In March 2022 Dr. Kristina came to evaluate him. She believed he still had light in his eyes and he actually was fairly lively that day. But after that I could see him lose a little of that light each and every day. One day in April 2022, after a tough night of labored breathing, I finally realized that if I truly loved this dog with all of my heart, I would allow him to die. He slept 99% of the time, wouldn't really eat, and had no quality of life. On April 8 Dr. Kristina returned and noted a definite change from 3 weeks ago. I held him in my arms as he got two injections. As he took his last breath, I thanked him for being the best dog I could ever have. I couldn't be in the room as Dr. Kristina and my husband wrapped him the blanket I bought for him and took him to Dr. Kristina's car. Toughest decision I've ever made but A Gentle Goodbye reinforced the reasons I wanted him to die at home. In the place that he loved with his family around him. Our 15-year-old cat, Milo, was very sick. His quality of life was not good. He could no longer eat. He was having problems walking. He could not jump up into laps to cuddle. We reached out to A Gentle Goodbye and Dr. Molly came to help Milo across the Rainbow Bridge. She did not rush, and we all got to say goodbye to Milo. She listened to our stories about him patiently. He was gone very quickly. She took wonderful care of him and us. It has taken a long time for me to be able to write this review. Saying goodbye to part of our fur family was hard. I 100% recommend this company. When I wanted to euthanize my dog, Lucy, at home, my vet gave me the names of four different organizations. I chose this one. I am so pleased with how everything went and I only wish my other dog (Atreyu) could've had such a nice experience six months ago. The doctor, and everybody at the office, were extremely kind, gentle, and unrushed. She clipped some hair from Lucy and tied it in a little bowl. She made a paw print for Lucy. She explained what was happening every step of the way and there was enough time to process it and say goodbye. When I took my poor Atreyu into the vet to be put to sleep One day when his heart failure got so bad that I didn't feel he could go another day, they gave him one injection, helped him to the ground and gave the other one right away without even telling me they were doing the second one or asking if I was ready. It was done in less than a minute. I wasn't even sure he was sleeping soundly. What a big difference going with A gentle goodbye! As happy as I am about how this was for Lucy, that's how Much I now regret what happened with Atreyu. From now on my dogs will only be euthanized at home (unless it's an emergency and I can't do that for some reason) and I will absolutely use A Gentle Good Bye again if I can. I hope I can prevent some readers from making the mistake I did. I've lost two dogs in almost 6 months and I have another who is 14 and a six-year-old. I hope I won't have to say good bye to Cindy for a while. PS: I saved $150 by taking Lucy's body myself to the crematorium, which I was comfortable with doing. read more

Completely heartbroken that we had to make this decision but Sara from a Gentle Goodbye was very patient, caring and made us feel better that this was the right decision. Our beloved Bear could no longer walk and was in pain. Sara allowed us to take our time, was very compassionate and kind. Bears passing was very peaceful as he drifted off to sleep and even snored. When the time came for me to say goodbye to my best friend, Athena, after almost 13yrs. I was scared, worried, alone, and just didn't feel like myself at all.
