I'm a first time cat mom, and I can't recommend this place enough. My baby boy - 11 months - was acting off, and I suspected a UTI. I got him an appointment at urgent care on Saturday, who quickly diagnosed a urinary blockage and to get him to the ER immediately. I was an absolute MESS. But in-take was immediate and seamless, and their team was SO kind, comforting, and praised my sweet brave boy constantly as I was crying and and so scared. I love that they have an open concept exam space and encourage you to stay for as long as you want during your baby's procedure. I love that you can visit any time - I did, and seeing his massive improvement was INCREDIBLY helpful and soothing. It really helped ease my mind and lighten my heart. They took SUCH good care of my baby. And they text you throughout the day with updates from each vet on that shift. This is a standout facility with expert care and an unusual setup which promotes transparency between the doctors and pet owners. My dog had an emergency which required us to spend several hours at the location in Lincoln Park. While we waited for blood work results, my dog and I sat in the general triage care room and saw how owners were encouraged to stay with their pets while they were being treated and in some cases, operated on. I can say firsthand, what an impressive team of doctors and vet techs, who are wiling to put their work and skills on display. My dog was in late stage renal failure and we did not have long, but the team was professional, informative, engaged in a solution, calming, empathetic, and kind as we learned of his diagnosis. They were extremely supportive in helping plan end of life for my sweet Milo. I can't recommend this facility and team enough. read more

My dog ingested something potentially dangerous over the holiday weekend. Dr McSweeny did a thorough exam and was very knowledgeable and empathic. I thought the cost was very reasonable. A lot of vet hospitals are closing or shutting down 24 hour operations. In an ideal world, our pets would never get hurt or sick. But even if you are conscientious, no one is perfect at keeping their pet under surveillance at all times so when accidents happen, I am grateful for places like this. Taking a pet to the emergency vet is always scary but when it's a 10 week old puppy, it's just a bit scarier. Brought in my puppy on Friday, December 12th, at 5:30pm after my regular vet told me "Yeah, we close here soon so we can't help you". I called ahead and the receptionist was very helpful. She even made sure I knew where to park so I don't have to stress over this. When I got to the clinic they told me right away to bring my puppy in the treatment room. Vet Tech Stacey, Dr. Mettenburg and Dr. Rushing took exceptional care of the puppy (and me). I was so baffled I could stay with him the entire time. After 3 long hours we were ready to go home and Fletch is going to be a-okay. This is now going to be my go to emergency room I bring my dog to! (Hopefully I don't ever have to again) I was amazed the moment we walked in when they immediately greeted us & rushed my husband & I WITH our dog to the back to be seen. We called on the way to make sure she could even be seen and they sent us an intake form to be filled out before we arrived. We did that in the Uber ride there. Our 8 year old dachshund had her very first seizure on our normal walk after work around 6 pm. We thought we almost lost her on wacker as we were walking through a mob of after work commuters. It was the scariest moment of our lives. After she came to we rushed her to this ER. LOVE the open concept of this ER! We were so happy to be able to go back with her while she was being seen & The fact that they treat your pets needs with urgency!!! Thank you sooo much to Cris or Kris who was our nurse. The compassion and patience she had was so different from what I've received at MedVet ER years ago. She spent so much time with our baby and answered all of our questions. She gave us her honest opinion and didn't seem salesly when talking to us about treatment options. She mentioned the bloodwork and IV could be possibly around $500 but would have the Dr. confirm. Dr. Cave was also very compassionate and sweet. She recommended we do blood work, IV and even XRays to check our dogs brain. We opted to just do bloodwork and wait to take her to a neurologist next week. The bloodwork came back in about 30 mins! While we waited I grabbed us some snacks because it was dinner time and we were STARVING! (Great snack options!!! Loved the healthy options) Loved the water dispenser with flavor options as well. The bathroom was shockingly really clean also!! These little details all made me feel better about spending $1000 on blood work that I could have done for free at Banfield with her plan. Avoid this place like the plague!!! Brought my dog her at 9:00 pm on a week night for a cut in her paw with a visibly cut tendon. The ER vet spent less than 5 minutes looking at my dog, admitted he was not a certified surgeon, and told me he could stitch up the wound but wouldn't likely be able to reattach the tendon. Since my dog was bearing weight on the paw, it would "probably" heal okay. Had me wait in the waiting room for a "treatment plan". They texted me a treatment plan of $1500 to do the stitches! I refused and told them I'd be going to my regular vet the next morning instead. They still charged me $200 for the "evaluation" they spent less than 5 minutes on. What a rip off!!!! Our beloved cat, king of our house, fell screaming to the bathroom floor one August morning. Horrified, we rushed him here. The vet quickly assessed what had happened and got him on pain meds. She suspected he had thrown a blood clot, probably due to heart disease. Circulation tests proved her hunch had been correct, and his back legs had no blood or oxygen flow. We had to say goodbye to our sweet baby that day. They kept him comfortable while we dealt with the shock, called our daughter at school, and waited for her to join us. We all said goodbye together for well over an hour, and when we saw exhaustion in his eyes, we knew it was time. We got to hold him and tell him we loved him, and everyone was kind to us, letting us take up a little exam room for half the afternoon. This vet office made a tragic day the best it could be, letting us grieve but be close to our little guy as we said our goodbyes. Very disappointing experience. They are understaffed and need to make improvements. My partner and I came in at 3:30am and didn't leave until 10am. Our dog was in an oxygen tank for hours crying and they didn't do any tests or inform us for hours about next steps. They kept saying they were going to run tests but it took until 8am for them to get tests. I felt so bad for my little dog having to be alone. Dr Boiskin sat us down and explained our options and helped us determine our best option to save our puppy. Update: Star added upon second visit. I cannot thank the VEG group enough. I was a witness for an alleged...hit and run involving an SUV and a small breed dog. They did everything medically possible to try and bring her back but I suspect the injuries were just too extensive. I felt so helpless in trying to comfort the young woman I just met. I want to reiterate that this was not her fault. Both her dog and her were taken to a private room. Once I found out she had a friend coming for comfort I got up to leave and the reality hit me. I can jump into action like there's no tomorrow, it's the coping and/or aftermath that gets me. I also have a syndrome that can sometimes get me faint if I stand up too fast. I wasn't thinking and soon was being caught by the staff. They made sure I was alright before I left. It was a worst case scenario situation and VEG went above and beyond for everyone involved. I'm so grateful to VEG for their help when my cat Pippin needed emergency surgery. Pippin (who was ~6 months old at the time) needed linear foreign body removal surgery after finding and swallowing some string in the trash. This was my first time going through an emergency with my pet, and I was an anxious mess the entire time. The staff and docs at VEG were very kind. The staff let me stay with him in the treatment area throughout the couple of days he was there, but I also had the option to stay in the waiting room or to leave if I preferred that. It was nice to have those choices and feel comfortable visiting him whenever I wanted (which was often!!). They were always willing to provide me updates in person or over the phone, and the vets even kept me updated during the surgery. They were always very up front with me about the prognosis and possible complications at every step, which I appreciated a lot. Obviously emergency vet care does not come cheap, and I also really appreciated the support of the staff when it came to figuring out the financial parts of the care too. As a student on a school stipend, my cash flow is somewhat limited and it was a challenge to pay down the deposit. They helped me explore options such as transferring him to a different vet for surgery, and were flexible when that fell through and I needed to have the surgery at VEG. They even negotiated some of the prices when I hit the upper limit of what I could pay. I really felt that the staff at VEG cared about Pippin and wanted to give him the best care they could. I'm so thankful to them for caring for Pippin and supporting me too. It's been about 6 months, and Pippin has fully recovered and is living his best (now string-free) life. I have a big dog (English Mastiff) which requires a special Emergency veterinarian to care for her. One Sunday evening I was walking my puppy (about 11:30pm). I tried to enter my building through a common side entrance. A woman was at the door with a cumbersome backpack on & another guy was behind me waiting to enter the building behind us. Long story short, the oblivious woman didn't budge from her "post" by the entrance after saying "excuse me" several times. She turned to look at me then turned back as my puppy & I were trying to move past her. She knocked me backwards, I lost my grip on the door & it slammed shut AMPUTATING about 6" of my puppy's tail! My puppy yelped & flipped over backwards as she flung herself into a corner! Blood everywhere! I checked her feet. They were fine. Her legs, fine. Then I noticed her tail which was substantially shorter. I found her tail in the door. Cut to how u learned about Veterinary Emergency Group... I usually go to a well known clinic in the Northern Burbs. They were backed up & couldn't see her until 7:00am at best so they recommended VEG. I called VEG & they said "come on in..." I gave info over the phone & was VERY SURPRISED when I was created with a smile & told to come on back. The vet techs & main veterinarian were outstanding! My puppy was attended to straight away with kindness & great care/concern. I was offered to stay with her or wait out front during her examination. I stayed with her. The assessment was she lost part of her tail, broke it in two places & bone was showing. She needed surgery. A work up was done & I was presented with a "high low" estimate. *Due to the nature of VEG being only an emergency clinic, I was told it would be less expensive with her regular vet. My puppy's health comes first & due to the high risk of infection, I made the choice to have VEG perform the needed surgery. Truly, the vet & staff could not have been more kind! I was offered to go home & get some rest or wait in the waiting room or stay to watch the surgery. I crazily stayed to watch the surgery! The ending to the story is the care, speed & result of her immediate care was a great success! I sadly can not remember specific names but EVERYONE treated my puppy & myself with such empathy & compassion, I am a fan! They are rock stars! My puppy's tail, though shorter, has healed. From start to finish was approximately 4 hours & she was put completely under sedation! Hopefully I won't need them anytime soon but if I do, I know where in the City to go now! They let me take my time with him and his final moments were so peaceful that, even though we were nose to nose, I could not detect the exact moment of his transition. This was so different than any other emergency vet we have been to since we got our kittums. We called the south loop location and the lady leveled with us that they were very backed up, and advised us to go to Lincoln Park. We hopped in an Uber and wanted to arrive at 7:30am on a Sunday. We were greeted and seen promptly! Since the rise in vaccines we were able to BOTH be in the room with our pet and the techs. The reception area has beverages and snacks like coffee, tea, water, cookies, etc. That was useful too. The area is very open, not a waiting room and mysterious back area where owners can't see what's happening. They do NOT take the animal in the back to do treatments and testing; it 's ALL done right there in full view! There are beds/gurneys around so that we can see what's happening with other animals too! That has good and bad facets for us squeamish folks. This was urgent (UTI or some infection) but not 'dangerous' so we were nervous but not terrified at what was wrong. The tests were administered with care and efficiency, and talking to the vet was comforting. She is NOT a primary vet so she was reluctant to give too much advice without really knowing our kitty. What we did find upon leaving was that the bill was roughly 25-30% HIGHER than when we took her to other places for the same things! I am not sure if being seen sooner by a vet and having refreshments is a part of the reason for that, but I admit we were relieved not to have the 6-7 hour MedVet ordeal. read more

I took my dog and was charged $1,300 after I removed an X-ray that was almost $700 and on top of that my dog was never taken to the back. the whole expensive visit was done in the waiting area because I have a big dog it was uncomfortable to see others scared of my dog. the staff is also ruthless. The procedure my dog needed was my fault for not really understanding what may happen if she was not spayed but there was no reason for the staff to shame me for it and in the waiting area. I was under the assumption that spaying may be an unnecessary procedure to put my baby through but not one vet educated me on what may happen. Their prices are supper inflated. almost $10k for a procedure and right away they want you to pay before performing any service. Without my consent, they took him into surgery. While putting him under, they overdosed him on anesthesia, stopping his heart. I woke up to frantic phone calls that my baby was getting CPR -- without even knowing they had planned to operate in the first place. This wasn't just one mistake -- it's a reflection of VEG's dangerous, careless culture. They hire and keep people like Fiona, who should never be allowed around animals. 24 months and $11,000 later, I'm still living with the devastation they caused. Do They Really Care? Recently we had a devastating experience at VEG Lincoln Park. Below is a timeline of what our dog, Coco and I went through: Aug 31 evening Coco swallowed a large piece of chicken bone. Sept 1 morning We took Coco to VEG because he didn't act like his normal self. Dr. Martin examined Coco and ordered an X-ray. She sent the image to Dr. Chadwick, a third party, for interpretation. The conclusion was that no foreign body was found in Coco. We were sent home. The bill was $1,070. Sept 4 morning We brought Coco back to VEG because he wasn't getting better. Dr. Schwartz ordered another X-ray and an array of other tests. This time the result was "the patient does have an esophageal foreign body, and it was missed on the original radiology report from 9/1 read out by radiologist." Dr. Schwartz stated that she had informed the medical director and he's calling some people to figure out what to do. It was explained to us that Coco had chronic esophageal foreign body, which could lead to rupture and perforation when removal is attempted. VEG does not have the equipment to perform the procedure. Coco needed to be transferred to Veterinary Specialty Center (VSC), in Bannockburn, IL (30 miles from downtown Chicago). The estimated cost for the removal is $5,000 - $7,000. Euthanasia was presented to us as an option. We rushed Coco to VSC. VEG's bill for that morning was $1,899. Sept 4 afternoon. At VSC, Dr. Osterbur and her team put Coco in an oxygen chamber. Early evening, Dr. Sharpe performed an endoscopic foreign body removal and it was successful. The chicken bone was almost the size of a human palm. A picture taken after the removal showed that large areas of Coco's esophagus tissue turned black and white where the bone pressed against the flesh and cut off blood flows for almost 4 days. Sept 5 - 6 Coco stayed in the hospital, lethargic, and refused to eat anything. Sept 7 early morning Coco ate baby food. Sept 8 afternoon Coco was released from the hospital. Oct 1 It took a while for Coco to recover. He was on medication for 10 full days after coming home. Emotionally, I couldn't bring myself to file a complaint with VEG until Coco stabilized and ate normal. We emailed VEG about the incident and requested financial compensation for the ordeal they put us through. Up till then, nobody at VEG contacted us to ask what happened to Coco after their misdiagnosis. Oct 3 I hand delivered a hard copy of my email to VEG's Lincoln Park location. The complaint was addressed to Dr. David Bessler, Founder and CEO of VEG, and Mr. David Glattstein, Co-Founder and President. I also requested VEG's receptionist to sign a proof of delivery. Oct 10 We received an email from Ryan Cohen, Medical Director of VEG, acknowledging the receipt of our letter and informed us that it has been submitted to their insurance. For the first time, someone from VEG said to us "My sincere apologies for this and I am glad that Coco is on the mend." Dec 3 (today) We are still waiting for VEG's insurance to contact us and no one from VEG followed up with us since Oct 10. read more

I think people should know that this clinic is not a full service emergency room. They have a large impressive team of doctors that work together, but not all the equipment one might assume in a vet hospital. They were very kind, friendly and loving to Willow. We had an appointment and they rushed us right in, as they could see that our dog was labored in breathing. Dr. Harbaugh and the team was very compassionate and took great care with Willow in her brief visit for a couple hours. Although, in the end, their suspicions were incorrect. They didn't have proper equipment and scans needed for a diagnosis, so we were sent to MedVet. Ironically, that's where our veterinarian told us to go in the first place. But instead of going to one of the two medical emergency veterinarian hospitals that everyone seemingly in this part of the city recommends, I went online and found this clinic that had good reviews. I was hoping I found an alternate option. We had good vibes from the beginning interaction with them on the phone they immediately put us in contact with a doctor. We were very impressed as she spent about seven minutes with us, and answered questions. But they couldn't really do anything for Willow. I want to take time to personally thank all the staff at Veterinary Emergency Group! My baby boy Toby was very sick all week and from going to ER to ER and we're really happy we decided to go with VEG. I also want to personally thank Dr. Todd who was very straight forward and helpful with Toby. She was down to the point and didn't leave any room for confusion and I am completely satisfied and grateful for all the work her and her team did. Lastly, I would like to thank Dr. Schwartz and the overnight team! They kept myself and my wife updated about Toby's condition all night! VEG place is amazing. I would strongly recommend this facility to anyone needing an ER pet services! They are very clean, efficient, fully staffed, and the whole environment is great! Everyone on staff is super friendly, attentive, and you can tell they all care about your pet, even at night!! (My visit was from 9pm - 12:30am) First I called to make sure it was just a walk in clinic, I spoke to Josh and he gave me all the info I needed including registering me over the phone. I explained my situation and that my dog has been having labored breathing all day and he said when I arrive to let them know so that they can get her some oxygen right away. I arrived, was greeted by Josh, and when he heard how my dog was breathing I was brought to the back right away and they placed my pup in an oxygen tank. I was able to sit with her while I waited to see a dr. The wait was long but again, I was there at night and they let me know that there were 2 dogs who were in front of us. I didn't mind since my dog was at least in the oxygen box and they were checking on her. Dr. Schanks took his time to throughly explain everything to me. He told me what his plan was, let me know what kinds of X-rays and medicines he was giving her and answered any questions I had. When we did get the report about the X-rays back, the news wasn't the best, but Dr. Schanks was very empathetic when explaining Aaliyah's condition and went over all my options. He explained the types of medications he was going to send home with us and what types of follow ups I should do with our regular vet. I can't really remember guy that helped me check out, name was possibly Rauzi, but he took his time to explain all the directions of the medications to me (there are 4 different kinds all with different specific instructions) and let me write my notes so I wouldn't forget! The next day I called because I had some questions and the person that answered was able to pull up Aaliyah's chart and answer everything pretty fast. She also let me know that this report would be emailed to me as well as my primary Vet office. I would REALLY recommend this place. From the call to the end they were super attentive and really helped me from completely freaking out. Even all staff that was helping all other other pups around me were super nice! Side note: it's 2 days later and I ran into one of the staff members while walking Aaliyah and he stopped us and recognized her! He asked how she was doing and asked about her breathing. it's one way you can tell they care about their patients! read more

I had to take 3 of my animals here within the past couple of years and cannot recommend them enough. I selfishly don't want to because of wait times lol but they are so good at what they do and try their best to be as quick as they can to see you and your pet. I love all the work they put into caring for their animals. No one's pet goes unnoticed and is given such attentive care. I visited Veterinary Emergency Group (VEG) Lincoln Park, last year for my dog Cosmo's minor paw accident. The staff was friendly, courteous, empathetic and personable. The facilities are impeccably clean, comfortable for both humans and pets, with a stocked waiting area that's ideal for stable pets awaiting care and humans awaiting results. There is also a parking lot with validation. They were also there when I had to euthanize my cat 17 year old Blake right before Christmas 2021- after diagnosing him as terminal, I was told if I wanted to bring him back for euthanasia (after a few days to say goodbye) I would not be charged the exam fee a second time, only the euthanasia fee. The euthanasia area was very serene and peaceful, private- the staff was comforting. I did appreciate this act of kindness and generous business practice. What prompted me to write this review was the recent hospitalization for my cat Cavendish, whom I just adopted in the new year, and had developed a urinary blockage. After years of having male cats, my luck had run out- Dr Kruzova, Dr Billand, Dr Schwartz and Dr Cox along with nurses Mel and Kelly, gave Cavendish amazing care. Throughout his stay I received text messages and photo updates with EVERY shift change. There was prompt and transparent disclosure of fees and prognosis with easy to pay links. I knew my cat was in excellent hands, and the money was well spent. After Cavendish's discharge, I received a SIXTY-TWO, (yes 62) page report detailing every note, test result etc, they also forwarded this onto my primary veterinarian. If your pet is in need of emergency care, I could not imagine a better facility than VEG. Of course we hope we never need to use them, but we are glad they are there. read more
