Came in for the first time from out of town for breakfast and decided to give AJ's a chance. Hands down one of the best spontaneous decisions made. Walked in and we were greeted with a chill vibe - guys working were super friendly and welcoming. Ordered a platter with eggs and home fries (super tasty potatoes that were well seasoned and had a slight crunch on the outside), and a breakfast bagel. The staff were very accommodating and kind. I stopping at AJ's for lunch early in the week and liked it so much, I stopped back in again later in the week. This place has the feel of your old fashioned, small town deli, which I loved. The customers all seem to know each other and the guys running the deli seem to know most of the customers. The first visit, I started off with a grilled cheese with tomato and bacon on rye. It was delicious! Nice big sandwich and reasonably priced. The next time I went for the tuna melt and loved that too! Coffee was good also. Prices are great. Parking is on street, may have to walk a little, but not bad. People working here are extremely busy but friendly. Being able to play lottery here is very convenient. I've been here a few times. Mostly for breakfast on the go and to grab lunch on the go when in a hurry. Service is quick and the food is very good (even during peak hours in the AM). Unlike some other spots, I see the care they take in prepping their food. I have never had a breakfast sandwich or sub from here ever miss the mark. Prices are fair as well. What I appreciate the most is when I also pick up for a classmate or friend too that they label the sandwiches. No place near me does this even when requested. Even though the items may be different in the bag, it emphasizes they put the effort in as opposed to stuffing your brown bag full and yelling next. Was working on a customers house across the street, figured I'd check this out for a good ol deli sub. It's your typical local deli atmosphere. Walked right up and order a 6in sub, an Arizona, and a bag a chip all for $9 which is extremely fair. The sub itself was a quality sub. Tasted fresh and juicy. If I'm ever in the area again, I'd definitely come by again. First time here so I haven't tried anything else. When I was there, saw some other men who were on the job and stop by for a quick bite. Another place I've been meaning to check out forever now and finally got around to it today. I ordered a turkey and Swiss sloppy joe with fries. The prices are great here, it's only $1.50 to add fries to your order so for the generous sized sandwich and good size side of fries it cost $8.55. The place is dark and looks a little run down inside but I liked the old fashioned look to it. The fries were really good, I love crinkle cut fries and they were done to perfection with a great taste. The sandwich was pretty good, wasn't crazy about the bread because it had an odd taste to it. This is a hidden gem in Caldwell. The building is not much to look at but it holds a lot of character from many years ago. Inside, it's counter seating or take out. It's best to call ahead to place a take out order. There is a pretty extensive menu, all at very reasonable prices. The best thing about this place is the food and the atmosphere. Everything I have ever ordered had exceptionally good taste. Some of my favorites are the Reuben sandwich and the chicken fingers. There are several flavors of coffee to choose from and they are all full bodied but not overbearing like Starbucks. Also you can buy 2 cups for what Starbucks charges for 1. I think the one aspect that keeps me coming back is the owner. Allan makes you feel like one of the family. He seems to really enjoy what he is doing, never complains and always has a smile. I've been complaining to friends you can't get a decent sandwich anymore... just chains like Mike's or Subway...or overpriced sandwiches at Calandra's Italian village....And today on my walk I decided to pop in. So disappointed the past couple of times I've ordered! Our order was wrong the past couple of time with the breakfast. No muffins in stock no rye toast and to top it all off the toast I did get was burnt and not edible! The drink I ordered was not in my order and the eggs were so salty I couldn't finish them. Ok so here's the deal. I can't go there for food anymore. I wanted a bagel and the guy at the register took my order and I watched him make the bagel with cream cheese WITH HIS BARE HANDS. Awesome town landmark within walking distance from me. with the liberty deli, four seasons deli, tuccis deli, and ciccones deli all long gone in one location near my house which is now the cigar emporium these days, to the best of my knowledge this is the one true old school traditional deli left in west caldwell. come to this place for all your sandwich and munchie needs at very reasonable prices. Free good amount of street parking with only a few seats so eating here can be a stretch the only flaw here. There is nothing particularly special about AJ's. It is a simple deli/newstand, doesn't really stand out. The sandwiches are standard fare, I had a turkey and provolone sub. The size is pretty decent, but flavor wise it is nothing special. They had a very limited selection of chips (just Bugles I think) when I was there. read more
