Because it's "kosher style" and not kosher, the pastrami just wasn't up to par from what you can get in an old school NYC deli. I was hoping to recreate that experience in the suburbs. Pastrami is a pretty expensive meat, but it was also drier and tougher than I was expecting for the price. I think it was more like corned beef than traditional pastrami. I usually don't do any sauce, but I laid on the mustard just to make a moister sandwich. It was overall pretty disappointing. The employees were nice, but there isn't really any dine in option. We customized it to put on club bread (for an upcharge). Mustard was on side to add at leisure. It was hot out of the bag. It came with pickles and cole slaw. Finally tried this spot after eyeing it for over a year. I was mildly impressed. The knish is pretty rosemary heavy which I didn't mind but didn't love and wasn't prepared for. The sandwich which delicious was nothing too outstanding. The pastrami was a bit dry. I liked the Sloppy Joey for sure. It's a massive sandwich. Def can feed 2 people or 3 if you get sides and such. The reuben roll was great! The service was pretty quick considering we were 6 people with a large order. Stuff came out fast. There's 5 seats along the window inside and they brought us out a 6th chair which was kind. Loved the hospitality and the vibe there was immaculate. It's just okay, matzoh ball soup was good but when ordered with an additional matzoh ball they don't package it separately and end up giving you much less soup. Mikki and Al's hot pastrami with mustard was one of the last sandwiches I bought in Montclair before I relocated and it was a memorable one. This sandwich is definitely on par with some of the other great pastrami sandwiches in the tri-state area. We ordered from here only for the sandwiches. A family member made latkes so we didn't need knishes as a side, or soup. Completely LOVED the hot pastrami sandwiches (with Swiss), which were generous, moist, and very flavorful, on very soft rye. Like another reviewer noted, the pastrami looked more like corned beef, but the flavor was definitely that of pastrami. The coleslaw was sweet, creamy, just wonderful. Another delicious and HUGE sandwich, cut in thirds, was the Sloppy Joe. We picked up, so no comment on the atmosphere or staff, but giving the order by phone was very easy as I am always challenged when ordering online, especially for 8 people. That said, the online order format provided many options to personalize each item. My one sandwich, I had half for lunch, then the other half for dinner, reheated in foil in the toaster oven with a little extra Swiss, which melted into the pastrami beautifully. Jewish delis are hard to come by these days. My go to was always Hobby's in Newark but it's a bit of a hassle. You can imagine how excited I was to find out one was opening up in Montclair. I've had a little bit of everything and so far all of it was amazing! Chopped liver - excellent Corned beef - excellent Knish - excellent Latka - excellent Pickles - excellent Health salad - excellent Pastrami - excellent. AND one thing I NEVER order is a turkey sandwich, but I saw someone eating one. OMFG it was the juiciest turkey sandwich I have ever eaten - and with Russian dressing? Amazing. The Sloppy Joey is one of the most delicious sandwiches I've ever had. Their whole selection of sandwiches are impressive since they have great meats in store. They also have delicious pickles and I don't even like pickles that much! The staff are all friendly and they give this place a 'small town deli' feel which I love. It's a cozy shop that's a wonderful sandwich option in Montclair. Highly recommend if you're into Jewish style deli foods. I have never received such terrible customer service in my life. Last night I ordered a Rueben, when I got it home the sandwich was ice cold and when we tasted it the flavor was off and it smelt weird. They were closed so I was not able to speak to them immediately. I called the restaurant this morning and was greeted with extreme hostility. The woman answering the phone continued to defend the sandwich and speak over me for the entire 15 minute phone call. Not once did she acknowledge that it could be an issue from the restaurant but instead told me that it was my fault because I didn't not show up for the sandwich exactly twenty minutes after ordering it. If a item needs to be picked up in a strict time period for them to guarantee it, that needs to be written on their website and on any other app that they choose to take the orders through. The woman who I believe is the owner offered me to bring her the other half of the food and that she would give me store credit. I do not want store credit for a $20 sandwich that made my partner sick. I will never eat at that place again. She refused to reimburse me for it so now we are out $20 and have spent the previous evening feeling ill. That's a pretty expensive stomach ache. I can't speak for everything they make but I can speak for this particular Rueben and on how poorly this establishment is ran. As someone who has owned a small business, maintaining a good rapport with my community and customer base has always been top priority, not my ego. read more

We had previously ordered deli sandwiches for dinner once and they were delicious so we were ready to mix things up and try the brunch. I really dislike writing a not-good review when a restaurant is clearly trying hard and is lovely. And it is. But. I just wasn't very impressed. Specifically the Pastrami Sandwich, Latkes and the Chopped Liver just lacked ... flavor. They were beautifully and clearly lovingly made, but they just lacked some ... oomph. The Split Pea Soup with ham was not bad, but the ham itself had NO flavor. Just none. In their Matzoh Ball Soup, the matzoh ball was delicious, but the soup again: no flavor. They also like dill. A lot. While it doesn't detract from the Chicken Soup (which also needs salt IMHO but that's easy to add and its lack lets those salt-sensitive enjoy it), I do NOT believe dill belongs in Chopped Liver. It just doesn't. It's Natalie Lee's place and she gets to make how and what she wants; this is just an opinion from one customer. The Latkes too by the way desperately needed some salt but again: that is remediable, just not when on the road. I admit my standards are high, formed from places like Liebman's Deli in the Bronx. I was really hoping to not have to schlep to the Bronx for my kosher-style deli fix, but this ain't it. Mikki & Al's is new and/or maybe it's just not to my taste. We picked up from here for lunch and were so happy we did! I had the split pea soup and pastrami sandwich, and they were both the best I've ever had (and I've had a lot in NYC & NJ). My wife got the latke platter (with smoked salmon, onions, tomato, capers, etc) which she said was fantastic too. While the pickles and coleslaw were very fresh and obviously homemade, their flavor wasn't my favorite (there was an herb or something I didn't like). The goal here is to capture of the spirit of the Jewish delis of yore that to an extent, have died out. Mikkis is largely successful I think - the hand cut pastrami is what I have been sticking with and it has been superlative. If I had one suggestion it would be an option to grill press the Reuben - it's a messy recipe by nature and pressing might keep theirs held together a little better. But considering the generous portion size and rarely found quality of their house pastrami, I think most people should just skip the extras and get a straight pastrami and mustard anyway. read more
