Charming spot with freshly prepared breakfast, brunch and lunch. Arriving at 11:45am on a gloomy, rainy sunday and there were plenty of parking spots available in their private lot (behind the building). I suspect on a sunny day, there are lines and no parking in their lot (there is a public garage a couple blocks away). Since they weren't busy three of us were able to sit there chatting for hours. I opted for a healthy bowl of tomato basil soup, with a drizzle of pesto (served with a small, delicious roll) AND a less healthy piece of their old-school New York deli-style, single layer coffee cake with a moist golden cake with a (very) thick layer of crumb (sugar & cinnamon). It transports you back to old school deli cakes. The sign says all baked goods are made from scratch, in-house. A friend recommended this place and I was pleasantly surprised by all of the goodness within - staff, selection and the food!! We had a quick lunch 2 days this past week. Each time we also ordered some bakery items - scones (the cranberry Orange was the best of the 3 flavors), sticky bun (please take it home and heat it in the microwave for 22 seconds and split it with only your Favorite people as it is that good!!) But I write this note on a Saturday night and I took home the NY Crumb cake on Thursday. I popped it into a plastic container and hubby ate half last night and tonight I had the other half!! Can I just say it was so moist, flavorful and perfect crumb to cake ratio!! This was 2 days later and still the cake was scrumptious!! As for the team there - they are friendly and efficient!! The place also donated all profits to charity so how great is that on top of a delicious meal. Giving suggestions and helping each other. We had to the Thoroughbred (grilled chicken), Roosevelt (roast beef) one day and the Broadway (Turkey) and Congress Park (chicken salad Sandwich) You need to read the descriptions to truly understand the epicurean experience in this local deli/bakery!! Sticky buns, scones, crumb cake, croissants, were exceptional!! Please note I went to culinary school in Switzerland and won a baking award at age 12 so I am so touchy about my bakery items! They were all fab!! This is a simple local place but everyone knows it is great food!! As we arrived at 11:45am and by 12noon it was packed on a Thursday!! Must go! I absolutely loved this bakery. We went back multiple times because we just couldn't get enough. The breakfast sandwiches are delicious, don't skip the roll!! We ordered a box of assorted pastries & I got their featured latte. The employees were all very friendly. The bakery can get busy, so best to get there early. read more

I had heard very positive reviews of the cakes in this bakery so I opted to get one for a friend's birthday. I went for the carrot cake. The staff were very friendly and helpful. I was a little surprised that the 6" cake was $40 but decided to reserve judgment until I tasted it. I was very disappointed with the outcome. The cake was listed as having a cream cheese and buttercream frosting. It did not taste like this was the case at all. I thought the frosting was terrible. The cake itself was just OK ... nothing special. I've had many carrot cakes that are far better. I love the Bread Basket's sandwiches and breads ... And I'll keep patronizing them for those, but the cake was a big miss and I won't buy one again. read more

Terrible customer service. No communication regarding a Wedding cake!!! The excuse given for not returning phone calls or responding to emails was "we're so busy." Also, first they said they could do our proposed design, then they said they couldn't, then said they would send pictures of similar designs they could do, but never did! Family was preparing for a back- up cake 5 days before the wedding!! They pulled their shit together after a visit from the FOG. I work right by this bakery and sometimes i come on my break for lunch. The women there who i believe is the owner is so friendly and kind and remembered who i was after me just going twice. I love to get the pomegranate ice tea with a salad! that place is so cozy and i'd definitely recommend stopping by. read more
