I really like this place for Vietnamese food. It's family style but some of the portions aren't too big. I've been here a lot and I never see it really busy, so we never have to wait for a table. One thing to note is that the customer service here is really good, probably best out of all the other Asian restaurants. They always recognize my bf and I when we come in and always talk to us. They even remember that one time my bf came in when he was sick and asked how he was when we came back the next week!! What we usually get is some type of fried rice and a vegetable dish. My favorite is the roasted chicken fried rice, it was nothing what I expected. I think they give you a whole tiny chicken cut in half and it looks like it's kind of fried but it's not. I had a roast duck noodle soup and it was awesome. they put the duck on a plate to keep the skin crunchy and the noodle is chewy and bouncy, just the way I want it. they have all the condiments to enhance the flavor. Stopped in for dinner on a Saturday night and tried one of their pre-set 8 course family meals. Crab neat soup was the first course and it was pretty good but could have used a little more seasoning. The chunks of crab meat were fresh and sizable. The cold cut plate with shrimp, veggies, fish sauce, and prawn crackers was quite tasty. The dish wasn't drenched in gish sauce (which I appreciate) but they also served an extra side of fish sauce for those who do like the drenched style. Other dishes included chinese brocolli with beef, sauteed veggies, chicken, lemon pepper shrimp, and sweet and sour fried fish. These dishes were fairly run of the mill, decent but not great. We also ordered the peking duck. The dish comes with 10 bread rolls but you can order more for an additonal cost. It's unfortunate for me to write this low review because this is my go-to place for Peking duck and Mi Vit Quay, but the service we received today was unacceptable. We came in on a Sunday lunch. If you eat in Chinatown you'll know it's a war zone for any dim sum place and half of the other popular restaurants in the area. We wanted something low key so we went here in hopes of enjoying the usual Mi Vit Quay. We came in and they sat us. It was barely half full in there. We sat for a while looking at the menu just out of boredom and waiting for someone to come over. Then when we looked over, we realized the same lady that sat us also sat down another couple after us. Yet we see her getting their order, chit chatting, walking back and forth to bring them water and condiments, and still talking to them. We sat there staring her down hoping she would notice, but she didn't even look our way at all. We sat in the middle of the restaurant and it wasn't busy, so don't dare tell me you forgot we were here. We became restless and saw a third table of 3 that was sat after us and sat next to us. They were also attended by a different waitress. Again, we were ready to order and just looking like deer in the headlines hoping someone would come over. Finally, my husband tried to flag the waitress that sat the table after/next to us so we could order and she gave us a "wait" signal and proceeded to rather attend the table she had after us. My one sadness with all pecking duck dishes is that there just never seems to be enough bao to eat the duck with. To be quite honest, this is probably the only dish worth getting here. Been here several times now and to make it relatively short and sweet, the food stands out only if you know which dishes to order and service can be questionable some days. Now this place does get pack so first impression is that it must be good. However, it is catered more towards a decent size group and at times you feel rushed in finishing up your meal. As I passed back through Houston, my friend who lives nearby took me to another great Asian restaurant. We brought some takeout soup back to her Mom and then we gobbled down tofu wrapped shrimp...omg was this delicious. Again I wish I saw this at home in NOLA. This Chinese & Vietnamese restaurant is delicious. Tenya, a Vietnamese friend of mine, recommended me to come to this restaurant. She would make the trip from Tomball to eat here in what she claims is the most authentic Vietnamese restaurant. After hearing this, I decided to try it out especially since it's so close to me -- in Bellaire Chinatown. The table-clothed tables all are round with those rotating plate in the middle. The restaurant seemed to be very utilitarian -- simple and plain. Even one of the waitress wasn't very nice (but another waitress came by and saved the day with her generosity). When we placed the order for appetizers, we ordered the shrimp spring rolls. They were thicker than normal and were very good. We also had wonton soup with vegetables (they may have added them when we asked if it had vegetables) and they were also very good -- and it had beef too. It was one of the most flavorful wonton soup I've had in a long while. We ordered walnut chicken, spicy scallops, and pan-fried vermicelli. They were all delicious, especially the walnut chicken. The scallops were good also, but I thought it could be a little bit more flavorful. Considering the quality of the rest of the food, I would give the scallops another try -- but since the menu is so large, I probably would try something else the next time I go. They only had jasmine tea, not oolong tea (which is something I normally get) but that's ok. The jasmine tea was good nevertheless. Also, the fortune cookie was stale. But I'm not going to complain about it since it's supposed to be a complimentary treat and it's not something they make at the premises. We were planning to eat at another restaurant in the area but it was closed for the Thanksgiving holidays so we stumbled upon A Ly Oriental Restaurant. Like your typical restaurant in Chinatown, A Ly was casual, not terribly clean, and food is served family style. And we had quite the feast. Started off with some Vietnamese egg rolls which were crispy and served with a nice dipping sauce. Next up, a duck soup with tender pieces of duck and noodles in a clear broth. We also had flat noodles with beef and flat noodles with BBQ pork. Huge portions, too many veggies for me but tasty sauce and noodles. The star of the meal, however, was the peking duck. Unlike most Chinese restaurants which serve you duck with hoisin sauce, green onion, and pancakes, A Ly switched things up by offering you sweet buns instead of pancakes. If you've ever had pork belly buns with a cucumber slice and hoisin sauce you know what I'm talking about. This was a nice surprise and worked well with the duck. Service was surprisingly quite friendly and effective, which you can't say you see every day in Chinatown. A meal for three came out to $100 including tip. We were a party of 6 adults and 2 children, we went around 8pm on a Friday. Surprisingly There were only a few tables occupied so we were seated right away. We ordered 2 orders of the Peking duck ($27 a plate) and an order of the stir fried beef w/ Chinese broccoli fat rice noodles ($11-12). They came out in about 10-15 minutes which wasn't too bad condidering we were occupied in conversation. The noodles were saucy and the beef was tender. Yum. But.. by far, the star of the show had to be the peking duck which took us by surprise. The duck came with a sweet side sauce with a plate of green onions and cucumbers. You need to come in with mild expectations for the overall experience. You won't find great service. You can't just pick any item off the menu and expect it to be amazing. You should really only come into here for the few things that they really do right. The peking duck is their biggest redeeming quality. I've always had consistently crispy and juicy duck, skin and bone-on. The price is just right. Most popular is likely the family style with a whole duck served with steamed buns but I'd also recommend it served with egg noodles. The roast duck with noodles is great for individual orders and comes in either dry or soup variations. Some other items I could recommend are their salt and pepper lobster, salt and pepper squid, and wanton soup. But seriously, their peking duck is what you should be coming here for. read more

Craving peking duck? Look no further than A Ly. They have the BEST Peking duck I have ever had. You can get a WHOLE duck for $23 which includes the buns, sauce, and veggies. The duck is not only huge, but lean and the pieces are cut so nicely that you can easily just tuck them into the buns without much of a struggle. Their other dishes are also very good. The pan fried rice noodles with beef and chinese broccoli is one of my must-order dishes. The servings are huge and perfect for family style. Service is always excellent. We went here to introduce our friend to a Peking duck, which if you have never had is a delicacy in the Asian culture. A Ly does a very standard job of their Peking duck, it's delicious and I hey give you plenty of meat which is always great. We got the dinner for 6 and split it amongst 10 people and since the portions were pretty big, there was plenty of food. They were also really accommodating in switching out a couple of the dishes for a few other ones. We got an extra calamari dish, but we should have also switched the chicken for the shrimp dish. The pricing was great, for 10 people the bill came out to be a little over $100, so for $10 a person, that is pretty cheap for the amount of food you get. The atmosphere is like any other Asian restaurant, cramped and noises, but that's what makes it good right? Tip: make sure you ask for more water otherwise you'll be sitting there for a while before they notice on their own. This place is just okay to me. The price is comparable to other locations and the portions are plenty. We ordered the ga chien bo, Suong rang muoi, tofu lúc lac, and beef filet in black pepper sauce in sizzling plate. All these dishes I've had better elsewhere. The ga chien Bo is different. Kind of sweet and tangy. The Suong rang muoi was garlicky. The tofu luc lac was on the bland side. The sizzling beef filet was decent but meat was too thick and chunky to bite into. The service was good but our orders came out too slow. Perhaps because there was a dinner party going on too. This place is better for big groups since the majority of the tables seat over 6 people. The waitress told us they sold 300 ducks that day - it was Thanksgiving. The snow pea leaves was a bit bland but still good.
