I have driven by this place for years and planned to stop by..I finally did yesterday. A charming, quaint unique nursery and much much more.. I was greeted by a pup (adorable) the sales people knowledgeable yet give you space to browse. What an eye the owners have with displays, merchandise and ambience. Let me start by saying the merchandise in this store is beautiful, unique and well selected. I always enjoy looking at the items and my purchases (including a very expensive custom made wreath from the floral department.). I would be happy to continue to support this local business but I cannot do so anymore given how absolutely rude, unpleasant, and unhelpful the staff act. And, unfortunately, it is not an isolated incident. One time, I tried to purchase a $50 candle and when I picked up the tester and asked for one that had not been opened, they said they were not willing to look for one that had been unopened - "oh we would have to go to the back.". Most recently I went to purchase some Christmas things and the sales person forgot to ring out a pillow I selected for purchase that she had already bagged. I asked if my order included the pillow and she said she forgot. She then asked if I still wanted it even though I had indicated I wished to purchase the product! No apology, and no "I will absolutely ring you out." I was so surprised by the exchange I simply said I was not interested. I asked to purchase some sleigh bells that were marked with a price tag and if I could please remove them from the display to purchase. Again - these were marked with a price tag for sale. The sales person said they could sell them to me and I could pay for them, but not take them out of the display until they removed the display. I certainly understand leaving the display intact, but the general attitude, tone, and lack of assistance when I asked to purchase $60 sleigh bells was disappointing - no offer of "you can pick them up on X date" or anything - basically saying I could pay for them but not leave the store with them. It is as though the sales associates are inconvenienced at having to ring out customers or assist customers. I truly get the sense they do not care if they sell anything in their (very expensive) store with the way they interact with customers. Perhaps they do the bulk of their business in other avenues (landscape, home styling) but for such a visually lovely store the customer service is incredibly incongruous with the inside. In a store this nice, I would expect a much better level of customer service. I have had at least two experiences when I have shopped there where the sales associates were at a minimum unfriendly and unhelpful, and at a maximum rude, (and apparently disinclined to sell products?!) and I have spent money in this store. I will not be shopping there anymore, despite the fact that the merchandise is lovely and the store is well styled and displayed. read more

This was my first trip here. The gift shop is very pretty and all the plants look great. Everything was super-clean & attractively displayed. I was disappointed in the food, though. First, the bread was not done. I ate a bite before I looked at it and could both taste and see that it was not baked through. So I ate the crust. Then my risotto and salad came. My salad had no dressing but they brought some over for me so I ate my salad. The risotto (which was oddly described as being in a broth) was not done. The rice was more than firm. I ate two bites to make sure. Also, it had no taste. I know it was described as either being covered with cheese or including cheese because someone else at my table who does not eat cheese changed her order after that. I only point that out because if it had cheese in it somewhere, it was well hidden. So for my $14, I got a small salad. I did not want to make a fuss because I was out with a bunch of friends. read more

It makes me sad to make a negative post about a shop I had considered one of my favorite places to browse and shop in Central Ohio. But I will not set foot in this establishment again. My daughter, my 2 yr. old grandson and I went in for what I wanted to be a lovely experience and left disappointed and in tears. My grandson was never put down - held the whole time by one of us with his head on our shoulder. The very, very negative eye rolls, stares, and the way we were watched by the owners and a few of the employees were awful. I have never been treated over friendly here, probably not a big enough spender, but this was over the top. So rude and unwelcome. I will say some of the gals that work here are very nice, but they cannot make up for owners that don't want you there. Sad. read more

Don't do business with this place. The owners are snobs and treat customers poorly. Good luck trying to contact them if you have a question or complaint as the sales staff are instructed to tell you that the owners are either too busy to take the call or are not there. All the plants I have purchased here have died shortly after bringing them home and the store is difficult about returns; I have heard this complaint from multiple people that I know have shopped there as well. The bakery there is extremely cute and I have heard nothing but rave reviews about the food. However, I am grossed out by all the bugs flying around the store and how the owners let their dogs roam everywhere and pee on merchandise. Also, the store does not have air conditioning and it is uncomfortable to shop there for more than five minutes. read more

I was greatly surprised by the quaint cuteness of A Proper Garden when I stopped in one quiet afternoon with my mom. When you walk into the shop, there is a calming feeling that just takes over. In this zen shop you will find nik naks and decorations to fill into every nook and cranny in your house. I would say that most are on the steeper price range, but everything you will find here is truly unique. One aspect of this shop is their little cafe inside. The cafe serves daily fresh selections such as soups, salads, and quiche. Since it was past 2pm when lunch is served till, we only had the option of desserts, but they were AMAZING!!! The cafe has a beautiful case full of cakes, cookies and other sugar filled confections decorated to the nines. We got a chocolate macaron and a mini chocolate covered cheesecake. The macaron was perfectly light and crisp, and the cheesecake was melt in your mouth goodness with the perfect amount of sweet and creaminess. They also sell plants, but it was still quite chilly out. I can't wait to go back and visit when flowers are in full bloom and to try out their lunch offerings. read more

What a wonderful, magical place!! The greenhouse is full of topiaries, fall color, succulents and much, much more. A treat for the eye!! The showroom is SO tastefully done--seasonal items, lamps, rugs, furniture, candles...MacKenzie-Childs commands an entire section...Proper Garden is a bright spot in Delaware, OH..highly recommend. Got turned around going someplace else and decided to take a peek in here to see what was what. A quaint little place with a great variety of plants. The prices are a bit steeper than what you would pay at a larger place and much more than at Wallyworld but the variety was far better. The inside was great if you want to decorate with wreaths or glass globes, cool decorative nik naks. I almost walked off with some old wooden spindles to use as candle holders but got a grip and just settled on some flowers that will continue to bloom into fall. They also serve food in their little cafe but no idea when that is as we didn't notice that part until we were pulling off. read more

To be perfectly honest I have never been more disappointed in a company in my life. My wife and I who are in our mid 70's have had A Proper Garden decorate our Christmas tree for the last 8 years and they have always done an awesome job. It has always been difficult getting them to schedule a date to do the work but I figured that it was worth the effort since they always did such a beautiful job. This year I started in September trying to get a date on the calendar for sometime in mid November. I attempted multiple times to contact Chris (the owner) but never received a call back. We tried calling him almost every day starting in November but still no reply, The unfortunate employees who have to answer his phone would always tell us that he was in a meeting, out on a call, etc. etc. I left several voice messages but still no reply. My wife was then hospitalized for a week and came home to face the holidays without a Christmas tree. To put it mildly, Christmas is her favorite time of the year and to not have a decorated Christmas tree would have been devastating to her. Fortunately I was able to contact a former employee and decorator who lives in Dayton to see if she and her husband could come to Columbus and help us out. They came on November 30th to do decorate the tree and save the day. To add insult to injury...just as our friend who had driven 150 miles to help us out had finished decorating we received a call out of the blue from a decorator with A Proper Garden saying she would be out the next day to decorate our tree. No return calls from Chris for three months....such shameful customer service. read more

I relocated from Southern California where the shopping is superb. As a retired Interior Designer I will enthusiastically recommend this beautiful well appointed shop! The buyers have a great eye for the unusual. You will find very well made and unique home decor here. I have overall been fairly disappointed in the selection of boutique home furnishing stores in Columbus. They all carry the same merchandise. A Proper Garden is a bit more on the pricey side of retail, but well worth it. They obviously cater to the more discerning customer. I have only been in the winter when the outdoor nursery is closed during the winter months. I'm looking forward to seeing the outdoor nursery. I have heard great things about the pottery and plant selection. The store and bakery are a lovely and charming place to shop and enjoy a hand crafted pastry and coffee. I would even go so far as to say this is the best store I have found in Columbus! A well designed home interior does not look like everyone else's. Stopped here to kill some time when the 315-N extension was clogged due to an accident ahead. Nice folks, pretty flowers, and a pretty expansive selection. As far as flower/gardening stores go it was a nice place to spend twenty minutes and the flowers, trees, and shrubbery in the greenhouse was quite pretty. read more

This operation so unique. You think you are in a semi museum/gift shop through out. The arrangements on the inside store are really impressive, clean and keeps you thinking how would that look in my home. Five days a week you can eat at the small cafe. Again unique and the food is awesome especially for vegetarians. A little pricey but worth every bite. When you start to walk outside you enter a huge green house full of unique indoor plants, tropical plants, flower pots, statues etc. Moving on outdoors there are massive amounts of healthy looking outdoor plants and trees. Throughout the nursery are lots of unique yard displays. In all areas there are employees willing to assist and if they are not the expert in the area they will call someone who is more knowledgeable. All in all it is a "Welcome to"experience. read more

On Friday March 13th at 12:30, I called the shop hoping to receive some information about a roughly $400 purchase I made on February 22nd, plus a $50 shipping fee. I asked for the item to be shipped since I live in the greater Boston area. This is the second call I had to make as I still have not received the item purchased. When I called Earlier in the week a very sweet women who remembered me purchasing the item said she had not shipped it so she would leave a message for the women who did. Unfortunately, the women never returned my call. Which brings me to today March 13th. The first phone call the women said she would need to call the post office as there was no tracking number on the receipt. My first question, why not! At which point I said didn't you insure it. She said no in a tone that left me bewildered as she is in the customer service industry and I am the customer. I assumed she would be calling the post office then, waited about an hour and called back. At which point she very rudely told me she had not had time to research, which i guess means call, the post office. She said it would take at least 2 days in a very unfriendly, confrontational way. Now why she would not have time to do it now leaves me again bewildered as every time I am in the shop which albeit is twice a year with my mother the place is empty. What I truly do not understand is why you would ship a piece of porcelain and not insure it. Either way I will not be shopping at that local establishment again. read more

This place was a pleasant surprise. The cafe was recommended by our airbnb host. Our second (and last) day in the area we came in for breakfast. Since the cafe was not yet open we meandered through the decor center. So many amazing things. The food was worth the wait! Unsurpassed sweet corn chowder, fresh baked rolls, and truly a mastered four cheese quiche. So sorry I didn't come in sooner in our trip because I would live to haves tried more items in the menu. read more

Am very disappointed with this business/Chris, owner. When visiting relatives in Powell, I purchased a large cloche, a few hours later while sitting on the table, it popped & several distress cracks appeared around the cloche, but it remained in one piece. We returned it to the store (in one piece), clerks can only replace/refund items that are in original condition. Chris was contacted via text, replied that he'd have the manufacturer replace the item. It's going on 6 weeks & Chris won't return my weekly calls, or have an employee call to update me on the status of a replacement or refund. read more

Worst customer service I have received in a long time. I decided to start early in selecting a Christmas Tree for my new condo. I walked into a Perfect Garden and found the perfect frame and then discussed the design. After selecting the design and elements on Nevember 3rd 2013 I asked if I could have delivery before Thanksgiving and was assured that would not be a problem. As the holiday approached I called on three different days and was told my sales rep was either gone or busy and would call me back. Having received no response I sent him several emails which also went unanswered. well, the holiday came and went and I did not get my tree nor any response. I went back to A proper Garden on Black Friday to get some understanding of what was going on. I was assured my trree would be done over the weekend. the following Tuesday having received no word I again went back to the store and the tree was done but I was never notified. I scheduled delivery for the next day, took the day off from work and they never showed up. I called and they apologized and said the tree would be delivered the following morning so I took the morning off from work and received an email at 11:30am that it would not fit on the truck but would still be delivered. It's a week later and I still dont have the tree which I have already paid $800. Unless you have an enormous amount of patience and lots of free time I would avoid this place. The customer service and followup is one of the worst I have ever experienced. Maybe they cater to rich clients only? read more

It's unfortunate that I have to review this place so poorly considering they are conveniently located for me and have some really nice items. Of the three times that I have used them, I have been so disappointed with their customer service that I find it unbelievable that they are able to stay in business. Each time I have paid upfront and in full for plants/installation and each time they tell me that someone will call with a time and date for delivery/installation. Without fail, each time I have had chase them down and essentially beg them to set up the appointment only to have them never show up and never call. This past time I literally chased them for almost 4 weeks to get them to deliver and plant the tree that I purchased. I would call nearly every day and consistently get the run around (i.e., someone would call me back, so and so is out for lunch, they are super busy, etc.). It's not until I literally had to threaten cancel the charge with our credit card company that someone finally (and randomly) called on a Saturday morning to say they were coming. I honestly felt like they were holding my tree hostage. I kindly asked them if they would refund the planting fee since it was so late and since the customer service was so horrendous-- they of course didn't. The place is cute but honestly the owners/operators are a bit snobby. Guess my money wasn't green enough for them. read more

I purchased a good number of landscape plants from A Proper Garden in the fall of 2014, including 5 hydrangeas, beautiful reddish color. One didn't make it through the winter, so when I realized it was't going to make it, I went to A Proper Garden and put in an order for another one. At the time, I was told that it may take through the spring to get the replacement, but spring came and went, and no plant. When I called, I was told by Becky that she didn't know the status of the order, but that someone would call me back. A couple of weeks later, no word, so I called and talked with Becky again, who told me the same thing. I finally got a call from someone claiming to be the owner who told me he'd checked with the nursery and it would be a little while longer. Through the summer, I heard nothing, so I called and asked for my money back. I was told by the owner that my credit would be processed shortly, but here we are months and months later, and no credit to my card. I've called a couple of times, but no return call and still no credit. While A Proper Garden has some great things, I'm never shopping there again. The worst customer service and I can get great plants and customer service at Oakland Nursery where I've been shopping. My advice is to go elsewhere, because they don't stand by their plants and their customer service is nonexistent. read more

I would have to agree with E.C. as well about this place. We have had a few issues with them and they are conveniently located for us as well. First and foremost there customer service lacks over all. First they told us a grass that we wanted would grow in the colors that we were wanting for a differ kind of grass. As the one we wanted wasn't what they had but promised us it would be just like the one we already researched. Of course it did not grow in the colors they said it would. We also were told that a "competitor" down the road from them only sold to whole sellers so you can't purchase plants there. That is completely untrue and these people are wonderful and so helpful. Unfortunately we figured out a year later we CAN purchase from them and the prices are much cheaper. The customer service is phenomenal. The will hunt down anything if they know they have it someone on the premises. Once we call A Proper garden and asked if they had a specific plant. They told my wife, "do you want me to go out and check?" Well I'm not sure how else we would know if they have it????!!!! One time we bought a butterfly bush and it looked dead. They told us it is just dormant and will grow. They said just keep the receipt and if it doesn't just bring it back for a refund. So we had it for a month and a half and it never grew anything. So we took it back and they said we could go look for another one. They wouldn't even help us. So we looked were they were when we first bought it and we didn't find any. So we ask a young man and he said he doesn't know anything about the plants that he just helps on the grounds. He said go inside and someone could help you. We explained they sent us out here and didn't offer to help. So he went inside to get someone. So a lady came out and said they are over here. Well the bushes she showed us was NOT butterfly and in the case that they were, they definitely wasn't the one we purchased. So we went back in and the lady was not going to refund out money. We didn't want something else, we wanted what we had purchased. She said, "well we wouldn't have sold you a plant like this!" Well of course they did sell us a plant like looks exactly like it, as it looked dead to us but it what "dormant!" We have no idea how they stay in business as well. At least we found a new place down the street over it and they are wonderful. read more
