I went to A Runner's Mind because of the great reviews on yelp. I'm a new runner and had no idea that a great pair of shoes was crucial. I went in and was fitted but was ambivalent about the shoes, fit, and size even after purchasing them. It wasn't until Monday when I used them in my first race that I realized the salesman knew exactly what he was doing! My plan was to run/walk a 4.5 mile race, but completed a half-marathon instead. I didn't get one blister or toe problem! I called him today to thank him. I still can't remember his name (I think he said Faisal) but he told me he was the only 'brown' guy working there! Eileen and Derek were incredible in handling a situation with a recent order. I got a pair of Saucony shoes while I was visiting the Bay Area for the holidays. After deciding on that particular pair I asked if they came in a different color. They were able to find a color I liked and I didn't bother to try that pair on when checking out since I had already done the whole sizing/trial jog consultation process. When I came back home to Chicago, I realized I had gotten the wrong size of shoes after running in them for a couple weeks (they must have grabbed the wrong size in the back, which I of course didn't realize because, again, I didn't try that pair back on before checking out). I contacted the store about it and they quickly sent me my correct size and paid for the shipping for me to send the other size shoes back all the way from Chicago. Awesome customer service. My parents and I went here last night 4 minutes before closing hoping to get a quick pair of shoes and Alabama Matt was more than accommodating to stay a little late to help us. He treated my parents with the upmost respect and listened to their needs with regards to what they are doing as far as work outs and day to day comfort needs. The music playing was very nice and calm and he was nice enough to give us the info so we could check out the artists. This review is a little late, but better late than never. I bought my Brooks Ariel from Dawson back in August 2012, and I just completed my first ever half marathon two weeks ago. This is an amazing feat for me because I was convinced that running was just not something I could enjoy. I had knee pains every time I ran, and who knew that a shoe could make all the difference. I've put 150 miles on my shoes so far, and I can't wait to keep at it. Thank you to Dawson for taking the time to assess my gait, have me try on at least 6 pairs of shoes, and eventually leading me to the BEST running shoe I have ever owned. He took the time to listen to our concerns as amateur runners, and he took a great deal of time to examine our running stride out on pavement to see what would be a proper fit when it came to buying the right running sneakers. Best running store to shop! In some stores, you feel pressured to buy something because the salesperson would get a certain percentage of the sales in commission... This store is **NOT** like that at all! All the employees are very friendly and knowledgable! They are shoe experts. My experience with Jordan was amazing. She was very patient with me (I asked a million of questions) and she was highly knowledgable about each shoe brand. She was trying to find the perfect shoe that fit my needs. I am always down for smaller local running store to support the community. Runner's Mind hit the sweet spot in service, quality and prices. First service, you just don't expect these days for a younger staff to be very attentive; normally I see them distracted with chatting or texting to friends while working. Not so here. Rogan helped me right away without being pushy. He seemed very knowledgeable of the shoes and the sport. And though I pretended I had not heard of rock tape, his testimonial on how he's used it sealed the deal that I bought 3 colors. It was cool chatting with him but not so much he forgot about new customers coming through the door. This shop reminds me of Jack Sports in Brooklyn NY. The quantity may not compete w bigger giants like Roadrunner Sports, but the quality is exact same. They don't mess around! Had I not recently warmed up a pair of new Hayate, I definitively wouldn't have minded trying the Kazan. Both awesome shoes but more preference on forefoot to heel drop difference. I actually had not thought I heard of the Kazan til he spoke about it. I couldn't try it and then not buy a pair, so best leave it for another time. A runners blog actually compared these 2 pairs of shoes with the Brooks Pure Grit so I felt good I knew my shoes. Lastly, prices may appear expensive but actually competitive with what you find online. They stick with the latest while carrying some oldies but goodies. The only criticism or disappointment rather is that I was drawn to the USA shorts. Sadly it was men's only. Boo, but not enough to short them a star. I definitely will be back. Prior to A Runner's Mind, I always picked my own shoes at Sports Basement in SF. I had no idea about my step or what I need. I bought whatever was in my budget and looked ok, and never loved my shoes -- especially not the way I do now... I came in to A Runner's Mind last night and had the best shoe-buying experience of my life. Monty was extremely knowledgeable and informative. He looked at my old shoes, assessed the wear on them and also watched me run back and forth in the shoes he suggested to ensure that comfort and fit were correct. He knew every detail about the shoes: their weight, the millimeter angles from heel to toe, and other stats that he could then apply to how they affected the way I ran. The shoes he recommended (Brooks) are fabulous. They look great, feel great, and the cost was very reasonable. I left the store and tested them out on my local 3 mile loop. I was noticeably faster than in my old lead boats, and the adjustments he recommended on my stride eliminated any uncomfortable impact on my knees. It was a the best feeling, like I was running on air! I'll definitely be buying my running shoes from ARM going forward. I can't wait to try their running club tonight too! read more

So after having a blast in my first 5k, but suffering the pain afterwards, I decided it was time to make an investment in some good running shoes. I knew I had a funky, "special-needs" stride, so instead of just grabbing something off the shelf at Foot Locker or Sports Authority, I went to A Runners Mind based on reviews from fellow Yelpers. I was very impressed with the time the staff (I'm completely blanking on the guy's name that helped me unfortunately) took with me to find a shoe that fit me properly. He was knowledgeable about why you run a certain way as well as all of the product. I think I tried out at least 5-6 different shoes, jogging in all of them, to be sure I got the right pair. Right afterwards, I took the new shoes for a 5k run/walk, and the proof is in the pudding. Huge difference with the new shoes, huge decrease in discomfort in feet, knees, and hip. Was very happy with the service, knowledge, and options when it came to shoes. I'll definitely be going back to add to my running gear! read more

I was amazed when Monte, the store owner, recognized me from last year! I'm in training for my second marathon and badly needed a new pair of running shoes, so this time I went to ARM. He was extremely helpful identifying the right fit for me. I loved my New Balance shoes that I ran a marathon in last year, so I went to that model right away. Unfortunately, the toe had changed from the model I had. Not to worry. Monte knew right away what model has the same "fit." I never get this kind of knowledgeable, friendly experience with Road Runner! I said before that nobody carries extra-wide shoes in stock, so it takes me a long time to get shoes. (I try on what I think are the right ones, order them in 2E, wait for those to come in, try them on, and hope they fit. The process takes at least a month!) I stand corrected. Monte went into the back and pulled out a 2E. I ran around the block in total comfort. I walked out of the store with a brand new pair of shoes--with a 30-day guarantee in case the fit wasn't perfect. (It was!) Tip: just like any running store, go during a weekday when you're the only one in the store. :) read more

I have been meaning to write this review for the last 2 weeks, but I am now just getting to it. I came in to ARM about 2 weeks ago to get a pair of shoes because I had forgotten mine at home, and I didn't have time to go get them. I have always sort of considered myself an expert with shoes, having managed a running store a few years ago in Southern California. But its been a few years since I had really run, and thought I would benefit from a real fitting experience. Dawson, who happens to be the stores GM, gave me an amazing experience. In the time that I was there, I really learned a lot about not only what shoes I need, but more importantly how my stride looks and how to improve! It took some time to get the right shoe because I have strange feet, but Dawson made me feel really comfortable and gave me great advice throughout. Super impressed. Drove to Runner's Mind in Burlingame from Road Runner in San Carlos after a bad experience (waited over 30 minutes before a salesperson asked if I had a question- then walked away saying it would be at least another 10 minutes!). 15 minutes later we were on the way to Runner's Mind. Took my son to get a pair of running shoes for his first year of high school cross country. We had many questions which were answered proficiently by Dominic. After trying on 3 pairs of shoes, we left with new shoes, custom inserts, and 4 pairs of socks (buy three, get four). Will be back when my son wears out this pair of shoes. read more

Customer service good as far as friendly, fitting you, watching you run and your gait.... HOWEVER, once u purchase the shoes, forget it!! I was helped by Monte, the owner. Really took his time with me and assured me that I wouldn't 'run' into the same problem with my shoes.... after spending well over $200 buying this and that (to avoid my foot/toe from doing what's its doing), the problem reoccurs! Was looking for a new pair of running shoes and I am grateful I found this place. Derek patiently took the time to analyze my gait, measure my feet, have me try on multiple pairs of shoes with different inserts and explained everything I needed to know. I was able to try on every shoe and walk/run outside to get a better feel for them instead of just walking a few steps inside the store. He was very knowledgeable, friendly and made buying a new pair of running shoes a pleasant experience. I am an experienced distance runner and have been ordering the same shoes for years but decided to get checked out at this store for size, type of shoe, inserts for avoiding plantar, etc. I was a little unsure with moving to a larger size shoe, and from stability to neutral, and switching brands and models, and inserts, but I went with it. I have tried them over a month now. What a pleasant surprise, my saucony kinvera shoes are now my favorite and most comfortable running shoes of all. I also found out how comfortable feetures and balega running socks are, so that was also worth a stop to A Runner's Mind. These guys are the best! I was having issues finding a good motion control shoe that felt right on me...the ones I was wearing the last 2 years were great but now discontinued and it sent me into a tailspin to find something comparable that worked long distance and fit right. I tried everything they had and they were so patient with me - sending me home with multiple pairs one after the other until I found the one that worked! It was a painful process from my end...and they are so professional and helpful (did I mention patient?!!) The business model is the perfect solution for runners/active people who need to do the "try before you buy" thing! ARM is my local running store in Burlingame and has it all! 5 amazing things about ARM: 1.) Friendly and knowledgeable staff; 2.) Great location and layout of the store. I love the causal couches; 3.) Perfect selection of shoes, gear and running swag; 4.) Cool events and community participation and; 5,) An owner and staff who are passionate and really do run. The #6 thing is a bonus is they are dog friendly. I'm all for supporting small local businesses! I N E E D S U P P O R T I was on the hunt for a new pair of shoes for training. The shoes I was currently using, just seemed to cause my feet to become extremely sore after my workout. The only other store I found aside from A Runners Mind, was Road Runner. But, I much rather prefer to support a small local business, than a big corporation. So, it was off to A Runners Mind! T H E O N E When I walked into the store, and towards the shoes- I was greeted by a friendly face. He asked me what I was looking for, and I told him what I will be primarily using the shoes for. Then he continued to ask why I wasn't happy with the shoes that I was currently using. So, I told him my issues and he had me try on a couple of shoes. Only one seemed to work for me. So, he had me go outside and do a test run in the shoes. They were PERFECT!! I walked out with a new pairs of Mizunos, which I am so happy with. Thank you! :) read more

Update: since the response to my review is trying to say that I am reviewing the wrong place, I just double checked and looked at the pictures. I reviewed the right place. The last time I went, nobody even was outside while I ran to test shoes, so there's no way I got a gait analysis. And the shoes I bought continue to hurt me because they are too narrow. I've come here a few times and pretty much always regret it. These are my issues: - I don't feel like I've gotten help finding the right shoes - The shoes can often be found cheaper online. - They do not take returns. The first time I told them I had concerns about the way my foot hits the ground, which I had been thinking about for a while. They immediately dismissed it and said I was normal without even looking at my gait, and then proceeded to give me random shoes to try, including stability shoes when no store that has analyzed my run ever recommended. I actually didn't realize the ones I bought were stability until I went home and looked them up. So annoying! They have never examined my gait or even offered to. Other running stores have told me I have high arches and slightly wide feet, but this place always says nothing at all about the way I run or my feet except to measure their length. The last time I went, I got a pair of shoes. When I put them on for the first time I realized even when loosening the laces as much as possible (I can't even tie a bow- just knots), they were squishing my feet. I realized I forgot to tell them my feet are wide. Why should I have to say that?! Anywhere else, I would have returned them after the 5 minutes wearing them, but since I bought them here I'm suffering through it and forcing myself to wear them. I also always become disappointed after going home because the shoes are always cheaper online. At A Runner's Mind, the shoes are ALWAYS full price. One pair I bought was about $70 cheaper online, so that was sad to see. If they aren't helping me find the right shoes, then what's the point of spending $70 extra? Even if they did help, it's not worth that much. I would much rather just buy shoes online and return the ones that don't work, or go to a store that is more helpful. And of course they don't take returns - only exchanges. read more

Been here a couple times now and it's such a great place. Monte is really good at getting you fitted with a shoe that's perfect for you. I like that the experience is complete, educational, and pressure free! I haven't worked with the other people who work here, but I see return customers come and go and they all seem very happy and satisfied with the previous purchases and sometimes just come in for advice. I've bought shoes on Zappos for the past 3 years, but right before checking out, I googled for local shoe stores in Burlingame and found this yelp page. The number of positive reviews persuaded me to take a look, and I found out why so many people had a great experience. I walked into the store, and at first I was almost discouraged because the store wasn't big. My first thought was that this meant they weren't going to have much of a selection. But, I walked to the back, and I saw each shoe that I was interested in online. I had been to Sport's Authority a day before (a much, much bigger store), and not seen any of them. It's obvious that they know their business just by the shoes they stock. Though I did my research on different shoes online, I don't run regularly like I imagine the people who work or shop here. So, I told Monte that I'm doing interval training (no marathons or long-distance) and I needed a new pair of shoes. He explained the pros and cons of different styles, and like everyone has mentioned, he let me take whatever pair I wanted outside for a test run. So I loved the New Balance Minimus shoes that I tried on, and asked how much they were--knowing, of course, how they were priced on Zappos. This store priced them $5 cheaper than the web. Five dollars might not seem like much, but considering I got to try my new shoes on, test them, walk out in them--and that, typically, you pay more in store for the service that they provide--it was a great bargain. There are local businesses that seem to make money simply by being local, and offering a subpar service--but this store reminded me that there's a reason why you shouldn't buy everything on the internet. You can still get friendly, useful service in person. If you're looking for a place to grab some new running shoes, this is it. read more

I went here for the first time this Saturday and got fitted for and bought a pair of Asics running shoes. They are amazing. The guy was super nice and helped me find the perfect shoe and insert for my feet after taking lots of measurements. Today I had my first run where I didn't have blisters, foot numbness, or any other type of foot pain. The only thing exhausted and worn out is my body.
