Recently I have developed some plantar which I suspect is from some ill fitting shoes. I came to a runners mind based on recommendation from a friend and was blown away by service. They do recordings of you running to see your gait and let you try on a variety of shoes to see which suit your feet best. I walked out with a new pair of New Balance. I walked into the store without an appt. and was immediately attended to by Monte. He started out by studying my gait and becoming familiar with my particular needs. I have some challenging foot problems, and Monte worked patiently to find just the right shoe to address them. I was given several options, as well as sufficient time to walk around with each of them without ever feeling rushed. I also appreciated that I could return the shoes within 30 days if they didn't work for me, even if they were well worn; these folks know how to build customer loyalty. This place is an absolute gem for runners. We were in the area for a half marathon. My friends were in desperate need of Gu..I don't use the stuff myself, but I was along for the ride. We had tried various places in the area, without any luck. I found this place with the Yelp app but it said they were closed. We decided to swing by, just in case. Although they were closed, we saw a couple of people inside. We knocked on the door and the gentleman inside opened up for us. My friends were asking about Gu, what he recommended and I had to give him a high five for recommending that they switch over to Shock Bloks (my favorite). They have a huge variety, tons of flavors. I didn't even need any and I bought 4 packs. He told us cherry was the best and after tasting what I bought, I agree. I don't remember seeing that much of a variety elsewhere. He was very knowledgeable in the ways of running. When my friend's asked what and how much to each before the race, he broke it down for them. Wow, this isn't a shoe store, but a shoe consultancy---the associates aren't salesmen, but foot/running experts. Gossum assisted me and I was blown away! Being a runner himself, he was able to assess my form and needs in the most informed way one could. He even took me outside to watch me run. You can't get this from footlocker. Running shoes ain't cheap. So when you're planning to drop close to at least $130 on shoes, you want to make sure you're making the investment in the right ones! A Runner's Mind is the only place I feel comfortable buying running shoes. All of the staff really take the time and effort in finding the right shoe for you. After bringing a couple of pairs, they'll have you try em on and go for a run on the sidewalk outside the store. This gives them the chance to really examine your motion mechanics and how your foot strikes the ground. I really enjoy this part because I'm able to feel the difference in what I like and don't like about the shoes. They are really friendly and knowledgeable here and definitely won't rush/pressure you into making a purchase just for the sale. I'd highly recommend all runners to check this place out! read more

My experience shopping at A Runners Mind has been similar to that of an extreme makeover challenge. I first jogged down to the Keleher's store wearing a pair of shredded new-balance walking shoes, basketball shorts draped halfway to my ankles, and a cotton t-shirt sleeve transformed into a hairband. In the past, I had always been reluctant to try out new gear because I quite firmly believed that running 'technology' was simply a marketing ploy. After a short dialogue with Monte, he explained the various differences of each shoe's 'technology' and told me try out a stability shoe, neutral shoe, light stability, and road racers. He told me to run in each pair as much as I wanted and I gladly took him up on his challenge. I did not intend to buy anything when I first showed up. I simply wanted to check out the new store and see what kind of gear they carried - just in case the soles of my shoes actually tore off. In the end, I left my decrepit shoes at his shop that day and ran home in a brand new pair of Asics Stabilities. I continue to frequent the store during my runs to hang out with Monte and Jenny and eat their Jelly Beans. Its an amazing spot to drop in on mid-run, to take a drink of water from their cooler, and then to continue on running while wondering why everyone couldn't be that nice all the time. By Christmas my running wardrobe became completely retrofitted, and I couldn't be more happy about it today. My running game has taken on a new level and has become so much more enjoyable now that I sport more comfortable attire. The group runs are also a blast because nice people tend to attract more nice people. I strongly recommend visiting a Runner's Mind to anyone remotely interested in running. Came here for some help because I was getting recurring blisters in my new running shoes. I was hoping they can suggest an insole or any type of other solution to my problem. I didn't even get the shoes here but came here for their expertise and Jennifer spent an hour with me going over what the problem was and how to fix it. She had me try on multiple running shoes, just to further diagnose the problem. She wasn't pushy at all in talking me into buying another pair of shoes or dismissive because my shoes weren't purchased there. She was super understanding and patient and I ended up trying out special socks that she suggested...so far it's working! The staff at A Runner's Mind go above and beyond! 1) Called in once to ask about store hours, and they let me know if I needed to come in a little later they would stay open for me. Later than 7? Sweet! 2) Researched Mizuno trail shoes and called A.R.M. to inquire about their opinion. Faisal and I discussed my current shoe and the trails I run on and determined that the Ascend would indeed be the best choice for me. He put in an order for me, but not before calling me back to ask whether or not I'd like the newest version in pink (definitely not). He saved us both the hassle of a return. (A sidenote: Had previously tested the Asics hybrid trail/road shoe that I got from this store as mentioned in my previous review. Sadly, Asics give me horrible blisters. Luckily, A.R.M. let me return them after testing them out and I picked up a new pair of road shoes. Hence, the continue search for trail shoes.) 3) When I went to pick up my new Ascends a week later, Jennifer let me know about the new trail runs that they organize on Sunday mornings at 8 am (and that I apparently have a "Mizuno foot", who knew?). By the time I got home, I had received an email from her letting me know where they were meeting for their next trail run and how I could get updates about each week's location on their FB page in the future. Only reason I'm giving 4 instead of 5 stars is because I paid over $100 for a pair of shoes that I just realized are selling for less than $80 from the manufacturer (same version, too), so, I'm obviously not happy with the inflated prices. However, the customer service was awesome here, and I don't mind paying extra if in the end it means small shops like this can stay in business. The sales associate, Sara, was super helpful in addressing my shin splints issue. She watched me walk, listened to me talk about my running routines, etc., and helped deduce that my problem is probably that I'm heavy on my feet, so she suggested a great lightweight but still cushioned shoe that will help absorb some of the shock when I quite literally pound the pavement. She also suggested some good running techniques and a resistance band exercise I can do to help prevent shin splints in the future. So, while I am not at all happy that I paid at least $20 more here, I do think it's worth it for the great customer service. They also had a really nice selection of shorts and shirts, and socks. A Runner's Mind stands out as one of the best running stores in the Bay Area. From the shoe selection, to the running experience and knowledge base of most of the workers, to the running groups and pretty exceptional events--ARM is more of a community than a store. I come here to shop if they happen to have a shoe I need in stock, or if I have questions about running. The only area where the store can improve is in the amount of time it takes to have out of stock shoes ordered and delivered. For example, a pair of racing flats I recently purchased took 7 days to arrive. With a lot of the online options available these days (e.g., I can usually have shoes delivered free of charge next business day), this makes purchasing from ARM a weighing of pros and cons and intense internal decision making. Do I want to wait a week or have the shoe tomorrow? Do I want to support a local business or some faceless corporation? Do I want to interact with some cool sales associates or stay bunkered inside, placing an order for shoes on my computer? It's a tough call sometimes especially on those lazy days. This is probably a challenge that many brick and mortar stores face... but a fix that would honestly bring in more of my business. I can say however that if you are not familiar with a certain brand's sizing or running in general, you obviously have everything to benefit from visiting ARM. These guys and gals will provide you with some excellent knowledge for free in addition to a pair of shoes, gear, gels, whatever you need. And their return policy is awesome... they encourage you to run in your shoes and if you don't like them.... bring them back for an exchange--no pressure no hassle. read more

I rolled in here one morning in search of help to see why my toes were numbing during my runs. First mistake was buying shoes elsewhere. I invested money in an expensive pair of shoes and inserts and was so frustrated with the other store that I walked into A Runners Mind looking for solutions. Mark was so very nice and helpful. He spent a good chunk of time talking to me about the shoes, the fit and the numbing issue. Then he analyzed my walk, the way I run in the shoes (with and without inserts) and then had me try on some other shoes in the store. I really appreciate that he was trying so hard to help resolve my issue since I didn't even buy my shoes there! Not once did I ever feel he was trying to sell me anything or talk me into a different shoe. I even insulted him about having these awful tasting, foiled wrapped Chinese candies and he was still friendly and genuinely interested in helping me. I didn't walk out with a pair of shoes since I recently dumped all this money at the other store but I will definitely return for my next pair. A Runners Mind is just an outstanding store with people that are obviously very passionate about running and fitting you in the right shoe. It's incredible how nice they are... really. Monte really knows what he's talking about, made a quick analysis of my gait, and had some fantastic suggestions. Even if I hadn't looked at their website before going in, could surmise that they are runners. They only carry the best brands/materials- didn't try to inveigle me into purchasing anything. Although I likely will when I pop back in to pick up my shoes, since I won't have my dog with me. Yup- doggie-friendly. Huge plus. Came here today cuz I need a good shoe for running or just working out. I need a special shoe for my R foot always hurt if I put too much pressure. The team were very helpful and they actually analyze how my foot placement when I run. They showed a couple of different shoe and explain why this should be better. lol the shoes are mostly neon colors and Im not a fan, but I can here for comfort and yes its a little pricy, it feels so comfortable and its like having someone personalized a shoe for my feet. Shoe has a good arch and cushion. Having a good shoe will further my exercise and desire to work out more. Anyone looking for a good run, this is the place for the shoes and marathon info. Love the people who work here! They're friendly, incredibly knowledgeable, patient, and have a passion for helping people find the right footwear. I came back multiple times, thinking my feet felt great in the shoe before I left the store. That probably speaks to how bad my last shoes were (not purchased here). Each time they found the perfect solution to my foot ailment. First return to the store, turns out I needed more support than I realized when I left the store the first time. It felt great in the store! But after a week of walking around it became uncomfortable. I went back to see if there was something I could do to help the situation. Turns out I needed more support than the shoe was providing! I had no idea. What was happening had happened in all my previous shoes; I thought it was normal. They found me better shoes along with insoles for extra support, and exchanged the shoes that I had already worn out and about for the better shoes! Amazing! Most shoe places I've been to don't allow you to return shoes you've already worn outside. One major thing I love about A Runner's Mind! I left with incredibly happy feet. I returned to the store about a week or so later because I felt my feet sliding back and forth in the shoes after walking a few blocks. It wasn't incredibly uncomfortable, but became annoying when I walked 1+ miles at a time. I wanted to see if there was something I could do. Mind you, I didn't feel my feet sliding the last time I was at the store. It was a very simple fix that I would have never thought of! Dawson asked what type of socks I wear. I wear thin socks that are great for keeping your feet dry - super important for long walks and runs. He suggested slightly thicker socks that provide the same moisture wicking ability and gave me a pair to try out with my shoes. I walked around the store and around the block, took a little jog. No sliding! What a simple fix! So knowledgeable! From shoes, to insoles, to socks! Each time I came back I felt welcomed in the store. I never felt like I was a burden (having come back so many times). Next time I'm in need of new shoes, I'm coming back here! What a treat to have a running store in Burlingame again! Runner's Feet left a gaping hole when they closed a few years ago so I'm happy see Runner's Mind in town. I recognized these brands on their shelves: Asics, Brooks, Mizuno, and that super-cushy trail runner which I can't remember the name of. Best of all, Runner's Mind carries Moving Comfort sports bras. They didn't have my size but the friendly staff offered to order it and said it'll be in store next week - just in time for my next race: the Big Sur Trail 1/2 Marathon. Probably one of the best in-store shopping experience I had was at this place. I just started running and needed advice on a new pair of shoes. Without any pressure to make a purchase, they had me try out and run in 4 pairs of shoes. We picked the best one for my needs. Getting the same shoes online may be cheaper, but the help you will get in this store with finding the right pair of shoes for you is way more valuable than the $20-$30 you may save. Mark was super helpful and very informative! He had me walk up and down the store so he could take a look at my feet and ankles. Told me some things about my feet... Some things I knew and some I did not know. Spent a good 40 minutes trying different shoes that he felt would benefit me. I even ran outside the store with them. I tried every brand from Saucony to Nike to Asics. Ended up spending about $110 on shoes and I got a free GU for checking in. Not bad since I was expecting to drop a couple hundred. Stopped by after a local dinner kinda late 8 pm and was surprised to see them open. Not only open but it looked like they were having some sort of a party. Apparently, they were finishing an evening run and were having I think wine and cheese. Super friendly and smart so I bought 2 pairs (Mazunos and Brooks) of shoes from Jennifer (owner.) They didn't have my size so it was special ordered and would arrive in about 1 week. So I got the shoes and they fit perfectly! Came to ARM when I needed to get a new pair of shoes. My previous pair, I bought at Roadrunner in San Carlos. While I like Roadrunner for a lot of the stuff they have, I don't think all their staff were that capable of diagnosing shoe needs and providing the right fit. In particular, I had been dealing with some injuries and needed the right shoes to help correct those problems. ARM had received great Yelp reviews and everything was just as predicted. The gentleman that helped me out was very knowledgable, was able to predict my issues without me saying anything and also, in the end, offered me the previous years' shoe which was discounted. He walked/ran me through multiple pairs to find the right fit in both comfort and proper running form and really listened to my goals and issues I was trying to fix. As a long-term runner, I've always felt it's important to go to knowledgable people and buy good quality shoes because it will cost you much more in the long run with cheaper shoes and poor advice. Having said that, my shoes were only $97 with tax and I think that's very reasonable for a quality shoe. Highly recommend A Runner's Mind and their staff. read more
