I've been going to the store for about two years now. My first time there I did feel like I was being watched because I was Black and they thought I was gonna steal lol....I'm not gonna lie. However, as I look through the other reviews, I just think that's their personality with everyone. after reassuring the owner that I intended to spend a lot of money there and complementing him on his excellent selection he changed his disposition and has become a very valuable teacher. Between Hi's and Phu Quy I limit out everytime based on their advice. He also got me a nice set up put together that works amazing and fresh and saltwater. Regarding the woman who works there, she is straight up and to the point and I appreciate that. A lot of of people expect women n minorities to shuck and jive for them in customer service roles... that's a reflection on the customer not the staff. I've been going to Hi's for at least 10 years. This is one of the last true independent fishing specialty stores in the area. The people behind the counter live and breathe fishing. They can set you up for literally any type of fishing you want to do, from bass, to stripers, halibut, to bluefin tuna. When I first got my boat I came in here for advice on targeting halibut in the bay and I had quick limits of nice halibut the first time going out. It's a tough market for specialty retail these days, especially in the bay area. I buy everything here in hopes they can continue to be around for years to come. I don't understand all the negative reviews. My experience was exceptional. On my first visit, Jonah took time to explain the various rod-reel options for striper fishing in the surf. There was no pressure at all to buy. When I came in the following week, Jonah remembered me and told me one of my options was sold out. I actually wanted another set up. Jonah spent over 30 minutes with me, helping me to select all the gear I needed. He provided me with lower cost options throughout the process. He patiently went over safety precautions since it is my first time surf fishing. Jonah showed me how to tie knots, how to install a trailer on a jig, how to arrange the lures and pliers. This is my go to spot for fishing in the Bay Area and beyond. Great selection for all local fisheries aswell as stuff for offshore fishing and bluefin tackle. Jonah and Michelle are VERY knowledgeable in how to target all species depending on how you're going after them and from where. They carry plenty of lake fishing tackle aswell for trout and crappie and bass. They also have 3 line spooling machines and are very good at putting line on your fishing reels whether you buy them there or bring in your own. I bought a lighted bobber and followed the instruction. The instruction says "Before use. (1) Unscrew top of float", (2) "Remove activation tab." (3) "Reasemble float." I unscrewed the top and it was broken. I brought it back to the store and showed one of the staff members. I told him that I unscrewed the top and it was broken. He questioned me why I twisted the top of float. I said that is what the instruction says and I followed that. He said "Don't twisted it. Just put that in the water then light will be activated." He was kind of upset and unfriendly but gave me another one and I said thank you. I felt guilty that he had to give me a new one when I left the store because I thought I broke it. Here is the worst part. Period. I went back home and put the boober in the water. What the Fxxxk. The bobber did not light up. I ended up unscrewing the top again and removed the activation tab. Then the magic happened. Vola! The boober was lighted. Brothers and Sisters. Unprofessional and bad customer services. Stay away from this shop at all cost. read more

Came for a rod tip, which they had. After looking through which tips would fit, I agreed to buy one. Without asking, the employee pulled out a torch and adhesive and began mounting the new tip onto the rod that I brought in. Thinking that was unusually good service, I didn't say anything. I was then rung up for the rod tip with an additional mounting fee (that I never asked for nor made aware of the impending charge). While the fee wasn't egregious at $5, the principle doesn't sit well. Do not render services that weren't asked for, especially if it comes with an incurred cost. When I expressed that I could've done that myself and didn't agree with the undisclosed charge, the employee completely ignored me and just turned the payment terminal to me for payment. Others have mentioned the poor customer service from this tackle shop, and it's warranted. Take your business elsewhere read more

I haven't really interacted with many of the staff other than Jonah, but every time I come in, Jonah is always very pleasant. He takes the time to explain things to me and is always helpful. He asks where I'll be going fishing next and gives me some tips and tricks on what to use at the location. Super nice guy. Cool please with cool people. Lots of gear and helpful advice from locals. A bit abrasive in convo so maybe watch taking the kids there (the f-bombs were REAL lol). Prices are a bit inflated as I would have assumed from any local tackle shop. The gear I did get has held up well so far and it's better than the spot I had gear from that's in SF. I really wish businesses like these succeed, and not everything gets to be taken over by Amazon, but... they have to do better to stay in business. The customer service was just so bad. I came in and the young lady yelled at me once that I must sanitize my hands, then again that I was leaning on something, then she yelled at another customer trying to open an entrance door they locked. Attitude all over her face. Dear owner, she might be your daughter but she's not helping your business. Then the owner answered some of my questions, but we got into a dead end when he insisted on figuring out what my "budget" was. I said a few times that I have no budget. And he continued asking that, saying that some people prefer to buy fishing rods for $3,000, and saying that if I have no budget he can't help me and "can't read my mind". It ended up almost an argument. Why in the world someone would argue with a customer??! I drove all the way here for the experience and great customer service, not to get yelled at, argued with, and offered a super expensive fishing gear I don't need. When I finally asked him to show me the fishing rods he has, he's basically "you can read the labels yourself". You must be better than that at customer service and simply be nicer to people around you. read more

There is no doubt that they have a decent selection, albeit a little on the pricey side. The customer service however is sub-par. Any help I needed or any question which required staff felt like I was asking a huge favor from them, which didn't help to encourage me to stay there for very long. There is one lady who works there in particular who seems to have a very patronizing attitude which one immediately catches on to. I am not sure if she was just having a bad day (we all do sometimes), but as someone who has worked retail and customer-service myself, that should have no bearing on how one conducts themselves on the job. The entire time I was there was an awkward encounter of being friendly in the face of of what seems like irritable, unfriendly people who just don't want anything to do with me.
