I was reading reviews on Facebook so I thought we'd give it a try. The food was very bland, the slice I received looked as if it sat all morning. I'm trying to understand where these recommendations came from because the pizza was truly not that good, very bland, and a small slice was $4.00 Sicilian $6.00. The service I would rate a 7 out of 10 and the ambiance I would rate 6 out of 10. It tasted very bland as if there were no spices to give it that extra oomph. I won't go back, I've had much better. I was really disappointed with my experience at A Slice of New York Pizza. The pizza was lukewarm and tasted like it had been sitting out for a while. The crust was soggy in the middle, and several toppings seemed less than fresh. I can't help but question the quality of the ingredients being used. The service wasn't much better. It took a long time to receive our food despite the restaurant not being particularly busy, and staff seemed uninterested when we mentioned our concerns. For the prices being charged, I expected much higher-quality food and better customer service. Unfortunately, this was not a dining experience I would recommend. New York style pizza was pretty dang good. Had a tiny bit of flop, just like you want. Flavors were good. The Sicilian pizza wasn't my favorite but also not my go to style of pizza. My girlfriend really enjoyed it. Will say that the prices are a bit steep, $25+ a pie and $4 a topping is a bit of a deterrent. It was a pleasant surprise to see that they have gelato in store. The pizza is some of the best in Western PA. The sourdough that they use develops the perfect pizza crust and the cheese is the least greasy in region. Some of their pizza actially looks like art. I especially like the pesto pizza. Their sicilian pizza when available is also a treat. However, do not follow them on social media! The owner Sean is a strange person and is not nice. He loves picking fights and belittling people. He has a sign outside that states "we serve nice people." My favorite local pizza spot!!!! I moved from California over here and have been searching for a pizza with high quality ingredients that does not make my stomach hurt after eating it. A Slice of New York goes above and beyond. I can eat a whole pie and not feel bloated. We tried A Slice of NY tonight. There is small dining area inside. Cute and cozy. The employees are friendly and helpful. We had a lot of questions since it was our first time ordering. We Picked up three different kinds of pizza to take. The Sicilian is amazing! Baked crunchy cheese on the outside and soft light crust inside...it's at least an inch thick! Giving a four of five because I rarely do 5s. That said, it's really good pizza. The ingredients are quality and the sourdough/semolina crust helps it be really crispy. I have eaten a ton of NY style pizza and it's good, but this ramped up the crisspiness. When this joint opened 4 or 5 years ago, it was lacking something, but they've turned it around. It's really good pizza in all aspects. Crisp crust, good medium to sweet sauce, we got a half cheese and half sausage and the sausage was really high quality. Like something imported. The actual location has a nice hole in the wall NY pizza place feel to it. Checkered table cloths and Pepsi products out in front...classic! Only downsides, you cannot turn in there if on the wrong side of the road, you have to take an exit then backtrack to get going in the direction homeward. Of course, this is not the business itself fault, bit if not for this, they would probably be 20% busier. Last but not least, a young lady who works there during the week lunch, is a bit unfriendly. She just gives you the feeling that she doesn't want to be bothered, just doesn't like you. I hope I'm wrong, but she is that way everytime I am there. Maybe she doesn't like me??? That said, we never know what someone is experiencing or going through in life...so I hope she is OK. Blessings to her. Finally, if I have the story correct, the owner is from NYC and came here to start something that he felt was missing in the area. I had been trying to get my wife to come to this spot with me for a few months, but when they first opened up (5 years ago), she said she wasn't impressed so she wouldn't go back. We went today and she really liked the pizza and said this might be the spot going forward. She also like the NYC pizza joint vibe! My son found this place from a pizza reviewer and wanted to give it a try when we came out to visit him in college. After checking out their website, we called in the morning and basically had to place our order to support dining in at 6pm. Personally, haven't experienced that for a pizza place before. We ended up arriving early and they were able to accommodate us as the place was pretty empty inside. Everything was delicious from the garlic knots to the pepperoni pizza. The pizza was thin and crispy. They had some cheesecakes, which they get from Junior's in NYC, but selection was limited, so not sure how often they get them in. Sodas are from a bottle, so don't expect fountain drinks with free refills. All in all a good meal and would definitely return. read more

The square pizza is the best pizza they make. I finally tried the round pizza, paid $34 for it, and having eaten lots of New York Pizza, this wasn't the best. It was good pizza, but overpriced and he uses the wrong cheese I think. Also something went haywire with the Square app and it auto-tipped them 25%, so $42 for a fuggin za. Service. So, when this guy was in Manor, PA, I first did business with him. I got a Sicilian that was a little bigger than the ones he serves now. It was really good and worth the money. The 72 hour cure on the Sicilian dough deserves 5 stars, but I can't give him 5 because there has always been a little bit of disappointment in the service, and because the round pie only deserves a 3. $21 for the Sicilian is a great deal. Due to the service, I give it a 3 because after being this guy's fan, and buying bagels and such from him in Manor, PA, which is a 45 minute drive, he's finally closer -however- the first time I went to his new place was about a week after Portnoy. He had absolutely nothing available other than cheese pizza. They also have an attitude about stuff. But what really has put me over the edge is that I sat in the shop patiently awaiting my pizza for far too long. The woman at the register, when I paid, said "We'll bring it right out to you as soon as it's ready." The "dough man" (the owner's son) was running the oven. I gave him a smile as I returned to my seat. I sat in the back of the shop and waited. People who ordered in front of me got their pizza. Then, people came in, they ordered. She told them it would be 45 minutes, would they wait? Yes, they will wait. More people came in. Then a group of 5 teenagers came in. All of these people got their pizzas before me. The place emptied out. Then, the woman from the register started cleaning up. She comes over to me and is like "Do you mind if I clean your table? Is this stuff yours?" First of all, don't clean a table when someone is sitting at it, but secondly, offer to take away their trash, maybe, don't ask them if they mind moving. I was like yeah, that stuff is mine. Where is my pizza???? Service got a 1. Turns out it was sitting in a box on the oven the whole time. Also, only an idiot keeps a list of people they hate on the wall of their shop next to their phone numbers. That stuff shouldn't be visible to customers, and really it shouldn't be part of your life at all, but if you absolutely need to keep a "banned" list, keep it in the back by the ovens, or next to the phone on a small piece of paper, so people don't know you have one. Sheesh. This knocked off a star. Beyond that, the guy has posted he is moving to the South (whatever that means, Florida??) so he's not even going to be here in a year. Absolutely no loyalty to Pittsburgh at all, in my opinion. We helped him get his start. Even with all this cringe, I give them a 3 because it's a family owned business and they seem to care about their product. read more

Terrible experience there tonight. They were out of the toppings I wanted, I get that, things run out. So I tried to order other toppings to be told there's a rule that you can only have two. Okay, I guess. But after talking to my wife we decided to come back another time, since I really like mushrooms. All perfectly fine so far. I said to the person taking the order, "I think we'll come back another time, see you next time." When we were leaving another employee, sitting at a table eating pizza with her kid, started screaming at me, "Get the fuck out, you're an asshole!" Repeatedly. I said "Do you mind if I hold the door for my wife?" "No! Get the fuck out, you're an asshole." The other patrons were appalled and tried to tell her she was out of line, but she kept screaming. I came back in and asked to speak to the manager. So she called the manager and the cops! The manager arrived and refused to speak to me or shake my hand. Meanwhile the other diners are all trying to say "he didn't do anything!" They even waited for the cops to arrive so they could defend me, which was very kind and appreciated. When the cops came it didn't take them long to realize what was going on. They told the screaming loony that she was lucky I'm a nice old man instead of some guy with a gun. Owner said he trusted his employee over me, my wife, and a roomful of customers. The weirdest restaurant experience of my life! Never had the cops called on me in my 72 years. Ironically, when the place opened I gave it a really excellent review on Google, which I'm revising. Oh, their pizza is good, but I'll never go back. Worst experience ever. read more

The hype is legit. Dave Portnoy (Barstool) gave it an 8.2 and I couldn't agree more. The crust was incredible and the variety of slices available is fantastic if you're stopping in for a quick bite and don't want a whole pie. We ordered three different slices - pepperoni, white, and a Sicilian. They were all delicious. The white pizza was the best I've had. The texture of the Sicilian was perfect! It appears to be a small spot upon arrival but they manage well and have a decent amount of seating. The service was friendly and fast during our lunch visit but I'm sure they get crushed at times. After this experience I'd be willing to wait for a table or takeout. Definitely coming back! read more

I've tried the pizza here once before (about a year ago) and wasn't too impressed. I had wanted to try the Sicilian, but on that occasion was told they were out so went with the traditional pie. It took ~45min for our pizza to be ready for pickup. I thought the sauce was excellent but was less impressed with the crust and toppings. In my opinion, the crust was a little too burnt and had likely been left in the oven a tad too long. The cheese was also very sparse and practically tasteless. We finished it all, but overall was a little disappointed with the value considering it was $25 for an 18" regular cheese pizza (with very little cheese!). For comparison, place just down the street is $16 for their 18" regular cheese pizza. Fast-forward to more recently I thought I'd give it another try and called around 4:30pm on a Friday to place an order. It took several tries before finally getting thru to someone. Kept getting error messages like "we're sorry your call cannot be completed at this time..." which was confusing because it seemed it was something with my phone at first, tried again, tried a different phone, tried again after double checking the number on Google, and again after triple checking the number on their website, until finally I got through to someone and was immediately placed on hold. I guess they were busy and don't have any sort of call queue? Finally go to place my order and was told it couldn't be ready until "sometime after 7pm". I've never waited 2+ hours before for pizza, but more frustrating was the ambiguity of pickup time. I didn't really feel like waiting over two hours only to show up and possibly have to wait even longer, or show up late to cold pizza, so I ended up not ordering. I was a little disappointed and went ahead and shared a review very similar to above on Google giving a 3-star rating which I thought was fair since I'd rate the pizza on its own from the first experience 3-4 stars, and I've never encountered such difficultly ordering a pizza as with my second experience. Prior to this I had heard this place got hyped up by some internet personality's review, but knew nothing about the owner or history of the shop. So I was shocked when a few days later I see the owner respond to my Google review with a very unprofessional comment. Went down a rabbit hole reading other critical reviews across multiple platforms, and come to learn the owner is notorious for this kind of behavior. I guess I got off pretty easy as his response to me was immature, but not overly offensive like some reviews/responses I read of others. Having also read thru many of the positive reviews I'm now convinced the pizza from my first experience was subpar by their standards as most of the photos have far less burned crust/char and much more cheese than mine, but was willing to attribute this to a bad day or just a simply a mistake with this particular order, etc., which is why I wanted to give them another try. But I've also seen other critical reviews describe similar pies as mine, so my opinion now of the pizza alone is that apparently it can be quite inconsistent. While having to plan ahead by placing your order hours (or apparently even days) prior is not exactly easy or convenient, I suppose it's not unreasonable if the pizza is really that good. But then why not include a disclaimer about how early to call ahead/limited availability on your menu/website? Instead new customers are expected to "know the rules" and immediately understand their unconventional approach to running a takeout pizza business or face poor customer service and possible ridicule by the owner? read more

Pizza falls short of all the hype. The dough is hard and dry with very little sauce, cheese, and toppings for the price. You barely notice that there is a pizza in your box, because the ingredients are so sparce it's like a pizza wafer. Deserts are not very good and also overpriced.
