Dan's the Man The first year we had raccoons living underneath our house, we thought it was "cute." They kept the local bush rodent population in check, and in return, they were allowed to help themselves to the occasional plum off the tree and use of the pool. But then they pulled down some (poorly fastened as it turned out) chicken wire blocking access to inner catacombs underneath the house. Before we knew it, they had made their home in the cavity behind the drywall and in the space between the ceiling and subfloor of the second floor. We cringed every time we heard them fighting and/or making sweet raccoon love down by the fire. We called county animal control as well as our pest control service provider. Both referred us to the same resource. Enter Dan, a.k.a., Trapper Dan. Dan is the go-to guy used by county animal control when their internal resources are otherwise engaged. I was impressed from the first time we spoke. Dan tried to gather as much information as possible to assess the situation. He gave us instructions to make sure we identified the raccoons' point of ingress/egress. He made his appointment and kept it, calling to make sure we were home as he was en route. He arrived five minutes early. Once here, he went to work. The man carries a veritable zoo of animal urine, and depending on the infestation he'll put together a custom package of the most God-awful smelling stuff on Earth. And it works. He told us ours was the worst infestation he had seen in his decades of experience. Yet when we followed his specific instructions, the raccoons left within several days. In this day and age, it is a breath of fresh air to encounter someone who conducts themselves with the straightforward and honest manner that Dan does. read more

I called Dan because I had skunks under the crawl space of one property. I was out of town and my tenants were really concerned. He asked for $400 to setup two traps for 5 days. I understood I was paying for the trapping days and number traps so I figured that should catch the skunk or skunks. First mistake. He caught two skunks on the first days and then it rained for two more. He offered to leave the traps two more days because with the rain there was no trapping; I understood it was a courtesy. Second mistake. The tenant asked me to call Dan for authorization after a few days. I call him but he says he doesn't need authorization. Mmmm? After the rains one more skunk  was caught, during the extra days. Dan recommended to stop trapping. When I tried to settle the cash my tenant paid Dan on my behalf I was surprised! Dan asked the tenant to pay extra $225 to remove the last skunk from the property. I was left with an unsolved skunk problem and dissatisfied tenants because they are still hearing noises and the entry point was not found and closed. Send him a text and couldn't catch his call. He left a voice message were he explained there was a contract and he just did his part. I tried to explain Dan over the phone that we had a disconnect on expectations but he got agitated and was not listening. Seeing the tone of his conversation I decided to suck it up rather than hearing him yelling to me over the phone. He left another insulting voice message. Go figure. Good things: - Very fast to come - Trapped skunks - Good reputation Bad things: - Didn't find the entry point so the problem wasn't really solved - Unclear expectations of the costs and service - Needs money up-front and with cash or check (other companies take credit card) - Charged extra without my consent according to a contract I never signed or seen - Bad manners when issues arise. I ended up calling American Pest Management (https://animalpest.com/) which came and for $85 located the entry point, close it and they recommended not to trap unless there is more evidence since I could be trapping skunks from the surroundings forever. I hope future customers realize that Dan charges for animal, number of traps and days. That's about it. He might not find where the problem comes from nor fix it. Skunks traps are not so hard to set up and plastic ones are recommended so you don't get sprayed. If you have $40 and are willing to dispose of the animal you can do the same for much cheaper. Hover Dan will gladly charge you $200 per animal so you don't have to do it. read more

Trapper Dan in one night trapped two very large skunks in my back yard. They tore up our yard (mulch/ground cover) looking for grubs. Dan has a regimented process to follow to ensure safety and that no one will get sprayed. He asks a bunch of questions to figure out what is causing the problem and has various types of traps and bait. He's very serious about this business and does everything by the book. Who knew there were so many laws about wild animals and rodents? It's not cheap to eradicate these animals, so I'd suggest anyone reading this to ask neighbors to split the cost if you see holes dug between your properties. Dan suggested it to me in the beginning, but I just wanted the skunk problem taken care of as quickly as possible. read more

Dan basically saved us from an insane rat that invaded our condo. We had tried live traps and waited him out for over 2 days. A friend of of ours recommended Dan. We called him at 6:30 AM and he was at our place in less then 30 mins. I won't get into the details of this rat's fate but lets say that Dan took care of the problem that day. Dan is a good guy and he knows what he is doing. A couple of years ago he got rid of a family of Raccoons that were living under our house. He didn't harm the critters just had them move elsewhere. It probably took close to a week but after first trying with repellents and then having to use some traps we finally got rid of both skunks and possums underneath the house. We appreciate your catching a rabbit that was using our new lawn as a salad bowel (and leaving yellow spots and poop everywhere as a thank you gift). Ok we have a problem with a skunk. We rent and called our manager who sent out trapper "Dan" . He set out a couple of traps and we caught a baby possom, big deal. It was the skunk we wanted to go. The folllowing day we had "nothing". Dan was upset we moved the trap to the backyard. Regardless of us thinking we did the right thing by moving his trap, he was an ass. Treated us like rudely. Its sorta kinda wierd after our apologise for moving his trap he was an insistant ass. He came and accomplished------------nothing. He did however got his money. 250.00. We are so happy to have found trapper Dan on Yelp. He was such a hard working man on the rats in our garage . While I was in hospital for a month in feb/March the rats played demolition derby on everything- clothes, bags, anything plastic ... I also found out they ate the rubber or plastic around my car's electrical system wires and had to replace the wiring harness @ a cost of $1800 for part alone plus 5-6 hours of labor on top of that. Fortunately my auto comprehensive insurance paid for all but my $500 deductible . Homeowners ins did not cover anything from the rat destruction. Dan was here picking up rats whenever we called him. We trapped 6 rats and 6 babies-sad but rats are not nice animals. The reason we got the rats is because I had a large bag of wild bird seed stored in the garage. Trapper Dan definitely knows what he's doing. I had a pregnant raccoon give birth to her pups in my attic. I received a quote from Dan's competition and they wanted to trap the mother. The quote was outrageous which is why many people take matters into their own hands and buy traps themselves. Here's the problem: Trap the mom and the babies die in the attic. I did not want fish them out. Dan provided a solution that made the mother raccoon take her pups elsewhere. Very humane and I did not have to pay a large sum or handle a wild animal and deal with dead animals. I found Dan by calling the San Diego Animal Control. They give out Dan's number. The grass in our rear yard was being torn up by some type of animal. Our pest control service advised us to call Trapper Dan, and I'm glad we did! He said that either raccoons or skunks were causing the damage. He baited and then patiently taught us how to open the two traps (which do not harm the animals) every night at dusk and close them in the morning (to avoid catching cats). The first night a beautiful little kit fox was caught. Trapper Dan came right over and set the little fox free, explaining that foxes keep rodents at bay and do not harm landscaping. He advised us to just be patient. Sure enough, the last night the trap caught a very large well nourished raccoon. Trapper Dan came right over and removed the raccoon and the traps. He mentioned that he had been catching many raccoons in our neighborhood and surmised that someone in the neighborhood had been inadvertently feeding them by leaving pet food outside overnight. Trapper Dan is a life-saver, no doubt. He came over at 8pm to remove a small raccoon of all things, that had snuck into my house via my back, bedroom door. He was under my bed and rather aggressive. Dan came right over and got it out. Afterward, he called me to ask if my dog had calmed down and did I remember to check her for any injuries... as it was she who alerted me and started to tangle with said raccoon; but luckily I called her off... as that is a fight she would have lost for sure. Dan also informed me of some post incident things to do the following day eg: check the property for raccoon poop piles, as the poop can be VERY toxic, and to remover it with extreme caution. I signed a contract with Daniel of Trapper Dan's Pest & Wildlife Control on Jan 29,2013, at which time he promise to set traps for squirrels in attic and come every other day to check the traps. I made the mistake of paying him $350.00 up front for his services. He did not show when promised and after several messages he came one time and did not show as promised again. Now he will not answer emails or voicemails. After letting him know I will continue to pursue a refund by reporting to BBB and small claims court, he has written to say he will mail refund. Hopefully, he will do this as promised so I will not have to follow through? I would definitely not recommend Daniel!!!! read more

If there was a way the give 10-stars I would. Trapper Dan is a rock star! We've had a family of rabbits destroying the back yard for years. I tried bait (don't tell PETA) and rabbit repellant spray, all to no avail. Every afternoon there would be four or five of the little critters, munching away on what was left of the grass. At night when we let the dog out to do his business, we would shine a bright light along the back bushes, and could see several of them scamper into the natal plum, thorns and all. Of course the dog ignored them. We discovered Trapper Dan when my wife happened to mention the problem with one of her friends from high school. The friend told her about Trapper Dan, who was able to get rid of a skunk(s) relatively quickly and humanely. I called Trapper Dan a couple of Mondays ago,, and he asked what was going on and how many critters were getting fat on the lawn. I told him at least five and at least one squirrel. In a couple of hours (try getting a plumber to respond that quickly) he had delivered six traps, four large and two small, baited them and told me to leave them alone for a couple of days. The next day there was a squirrel in the large trap and a possum in the small trap! Fast forward and T.D. got four rabbits, three possums, and one squirrel. One of the benefits of using T.D. is that when an animal is trapped, he comes out right away and takes the trap away. On Monday last, he asked what was happening and I told him zero, zip, nada. He said he would come out the next morning, Tuesday, to take the last traps, which he did. As of this writing, Friday, no critters have reappeared, and I can get to work repairing the lawn. This is the second time we've used Dan. First time, he caught a skunk, second time another skunk and a rat. He's very professional, comes when he says he will, and is more than fair. He's very clear on what he can do and when, and what he expected us to do (mainly call each morning to let him know if there was anything in the trap). We've been trying to catch a rat (rats?) for the last few weeks. Finally caught one - but it wasn't dead. We just couldn't deal with that! Late September I called Trapper Dan about a skunk who was using my property as a shortcut to where ever he was going at night. I would open my door at night to take the dog out and smell skunk. Trapper Dan told me if I could smell skunk then there was likely more than one. Didn't like to hear that since a couple years back my Chihuahua got sprayed twice that same year what a nightmare. So hired Trapper Dan, he came out the next day explained the trap set up (2 traps) how to open and close them each day and to call him if I caught a skunk. Next morning I saw the skunk in the trap. Called Trapper Dan and he was out here in a couple hours to remove the skunk. Next night no skunk but heard a owl so I was thinking maybe the owl got him. 3rd morning found another skunk in the 2nd trap. Dan was again quick to come out and remove the skunk. Funny I don't know how he does it but I never smelt any skunk smell on him or in my carport area when he removed them. We've used Trapper Dan twice, first for raccoons in our attic, and recently for a rat that decided our attic was it's next home. The raccoon solution really worked, he came by and used scents (gnarly smelling stuff) from natural predators to convince the mom and babies to move out and within 2 days, we had evidence of their departure. His solutions are kind, hands-on and effective and less than 1/3 of what I was quoted by a larger company in the yellow pages. He came out recently to help us with another noise in the attic, assessed the problem as rat(s) and helped point out the entry point under our eaves. After suggesting a solution (a trip to Home Depot), the coolest thing was he didn't charge us for the consultation. He's smart and knows animal behavior. He's the guy to call first. Oh, and his fee only went went up $25 since the raccoon incident, several years ago. (As an aside, when he first came over I had a trap in the attic. He asked what i would do if I caught the raccoon. When I said I'd just take it out of the attic, he shook his head like "you idiot" and explained that a trapped raccoon will tear you up if you even touched the cage, and that I was really lucky I hadn't trapped it.) And FYI, there are 2 negative reviews on Yelp. Please note that for what he charges, it often involves you doing something like fixing where the animal gets in, and for raccoons putting lights and a radio nearby (they hate noise and daylight) and placing some flour at the entry/exit to check for paw prints when they leave. This stuff works, period. Both of these reviewers didn't care enough to do a couple simple things, like answer a phone, or check the traps to help a very efficient, very busy guy, then have the nerve to dis him. Trapper Dan and I spoke on a Monday evening. He agreed to come out to my house and remove/place traps for a pest on Tuesday. We discussed a time and a price. I followed his instructions, please call me back and leave your name, number, address.. you know specifics. Following day, I call my wife and ask if Trapper Dan showed up.. she said "no." So I promptly called... He answers, and says.. I was in your area and called your wife several times and she never picked up, so I didnt come.. (I reminded him we had an appointment and my wife was working around the house expecting him that morning) Trapper Dan proceeded to get upset with me, telling me he left the area.. I mentioned again, "We had an appointment.." before giving in. I realized he was frustrated my wife didnt answer when he called. Asked, ok, so can you come out and set the traps? His response was, I can but there will be an additional charge. At that point I decided I would take my business elsewhere. read more

We live on a canyon in La Jolla and recently noticed our lawn and flower beds were being destroyed. I went to home depot to ask for help. They recommended sprays and pellets to discourage the animals-nothing worked. We called Trapper Dan who has 30 years experience in San Diego. We had a messy problem with skunks digging holes in our yard to find grubs. Almost every morning we'd find mulch scattered everywhere! Since I'm kind of a neat freak, sweeping it up got to be annoying. But one morning, the mess in the courtyard was the worst ever, so I called Trapper Dan. He came that morning and set traps, and lo and behold, the next morning, two fat and unhappy skunks had been captured.
