BUYER BEWARE Last week I had A1 Garage Door Service come to my house to give me a quote to replace my two garage doors, one single door and one double door. Mario the technician was polite, knowledgeable, and helpful but unfortunately that's where it ended. We discussed what I was looking for and some of the options available, he then took some pictures of the garage and said it'll be a few minutes more to get a quote. He came back with someone else on the phone, which unfortunately I don't remember his name, but he said he was in Sedona. After some small talk about the classic car in my garage, which made it into one of the pictures Mario took, he gave my wife and I a verbal quote over the phone of $29,000. This quote consisted of replacing the two doors with Clopay Classic Steel doors model #9203 insulated with an 18.4 R value with upgraded springs, rollers, and a longer warranty. A bit much? Yes! After we said no, I asked them to take the fluff out and to give me a price for the same doors. He came back with $14,090.05 and then proceeded to discuss the picture of my dad in uniform hanging in the garage, which I guess also made it into one of the pictures of the garage Mario took. When I told him I served in the Air Force as well he proceeded to tell us how they like to take care of our veterans, so he gave me 10% off the quote. While I do not have the $29,000 quote in writing, I do have the second quote of $13,817.03 in writing which included the veteran's discount. I told them I would continue to do my research and obtain more quotes and would get back with them. At the suggestion of a friend, I went to Home Depot to get a quote. Home Depot's quote for the exact same doors, including upgraded springs, rollers, longer warranty, and installation, came in at $4655.00 for model HDPL20, and that is before the 10% veteran's discount Home Depot gives. I thought there had to be a reason for such a significant price difference, so I called Clopay, the manufacturer of these garage doors. I confirmed with them that the doors Home Depot were quoting me on were the exact same doors quoted to me by A1!! Home Depot just uses their own model number for the doors. You be the judge. The extreme price discrepancy--and the sales tactics used--made the entire interaction feel predatory. Whether the high quote was based on my neighborhood, the fact we are seniors, or maybe the classic car in my garage, I can't say, but it certainly wasn't based on the actual cost of the doors. Additionally, they gave me the line that they like to take care of veterans. How is this taking care of veterans?! The huge price difference and sales tactics left me feeling taken advantage of. 14 minutes ago I bought a garage door from A1 Garage Doors, and had been satisfied with the service until now. the hinge broke on the garage door, I called them for service. they said someone hit the garage door and that I needed a new garage door! I called another company, they said there was no way the door was hit, and they repaired it in 20 minutes! I texted the sales person at A1 that I had the door repaired and didn't need to get a new door and felt like I had been taken advantage of, and never got a response from them. I got scammed into proceeding with a garage door repair. They do show up promptly- from there it is downhill. Unfortunately consumers don't know what a typical repair costs. And when you need service it is too late to figure everything out. Well this spring repair ends up costing $1900. So- these garage door companies will not give you prices over the phone, But there is always one company that will- and I find out my repair should have cost $700!!! read more

We called out A1 just to have everything serviced - general maintenance. I knew that the door was making noises that were not up to par, and the chain was getting lose. The gentleman that came out was informative, and noted that we were missing a spring - we only had one and needed two for the door weight. Made sense. so we had him do his thing - add the spring and do the maintenance. $1900 dollars later and now the chain is worse and the door wont even close all the way. I have a home warranty so I will be calling them to adjust the opener, but I feel taken as I paid almost $2000 to now have more issues that I didn't have before. Immediate upsell. They tried to sell me a new garage door opener (almost two thousand dollars). After they left I looked at the opener and found that a connection had come loose. Simply reconnecting it fixed the door. This tells me that their "free estimate" is just license for them to try to sell you a new unit. They didn't even LOOK to see what the problem might have been. Stay far away or at least get a second opinion. Note that they will try to hard sell you if you say "no", and try to get you to put money down on service or equipment. 2/5*. Issue - Garage door would not completely close - it left about a 3" gap at the bottom. (as of 3 months ago.) 2 hours and $1,212 later, the garage door still does not close complete - it has about a 2" gap now. I paid for a LOT of unnecessary items with the understanding it was needed (moving parts, bearings, new spring, etc.). Note that the garage worked, it just would not close completely as of 3 months ago. The workers could not provide an explanation as to why it would not close completely. They then suggested it was the motor. (which works fine). I'm out my hard earned money and STILL need to have my garage door properly serviced. Avoid unless you want to overpay. Called A1 Garage to fix my garage door, which it turned out to be a broken spring. Was expecting a few hundred bucks and was quoted over a grand like it was nothing. When I declined the service the tech left me with a sarcastic "good luck". A 10 second google search yielded a local family run garage door repair business. They showed up within a couple hours, did an excellent job, and charged a fraction of what A1 garage quoted me. I implore you to go this route. He took his time showing us photos of the condition of the complete system and explained the age and condition of all the various running parts of the door. Wish I would have read the reviews before allowing the company to do work on our garage door. As with all the other reviews a simpler repair turned into a much larger repair as they replaced all the various components (Bearings, Drums, Rollers, Cables) only informing of the need after starting the work. Since my garage door was 25 years old I was ok with those changes, but the price did seem high. When I got the detailed receipt I went online and priced out all the materials that were listed. Comparing with only the most expensive top end equivalent products, their prices ranged from 1.5 times to 12 times the cost with most of the higher priced items at 2 to 3 times. Given this the overall bill was at least double what it should have been even if they would have used the best possible products in the market, which I doubt they did. On the actual work side of the product, they were quick and efficient and did good quality work, so no complaints there If you look at the more recent reviews, there are a lot of negative reviews for the reasons that I have listed. Seems like this is now a standard tactic for this company. read more

I needed a new circuit board because the remotes would not work unless you were inside the garage. It is a 10 year old Chamberlain belt drive. The tech showed up and said the radio signal gets weak over time. I immediately thought about the 38 year old radio I listen when I'm working in the garage and knew this was a load of BS. Not to mention friends who have 40 year old garage door openers that still work! He said you couldn't get the circuit board anymore which may be true but a Google search suggests you can. I told him I was hoping to spend no more than $200 for the repair because of other upcoming expenses. I told him I would go buy a new one and install it myself if it was over $200. He said he could install a new one for $1800. Again I told him no can do. He then said that the springs were under rated for the garage door and should be replaced!!! He quoted me good/better/best springs at $800/$1100/$1500. The garage door opener and the garage door were both new in 2016 and the springs are doing a great job. And remember I told him I had no more than $200 to spend! He was determined to sell me something so I pulled out my $29.95 A1 Tune-Up coupon. He did a great job on the tune-up! He fixed an Imbalance in the cables, adjusted the spring tension and lubricated everything. It was a noticeable improvement in the operation of the door. Having said that, he inspected everything but did not mention anything about the belt pulling apart in several places with some as much as 1/4". He included it in his report but never said a word to me about it, and It looked like it could fail at any time. I would say that A1 must have some kind of commission or bonus system that encourages their technicians to sell more than repair? At any rate I went out the next day and picked up a new 3/4 HP Chamberlain belt drive garage door opener for $269 ($293.48 out the door) and installed it in about 3 hours. Also The Home Depot will install it for $178 and Lowes installation is about the same. So for under $500 installed -VS- $1800. How do these people sleep at night! It came with motion sensor, camera and MyQ so you can open and close the door from anywhere. I have no idea what an $1800 garage door opener would have for features but wow it must be pretty special lol. It was also their own branded A1 garage door opener. I didn't look at their reviews, but I should have because there are A LOT of BAD reviews for A1. Stay away from this company read more

I have valued the service I received at A1 Garage Door Service in the past, but I will not be calling them back. I needed the wire replaced that ran between the laser eyes and opener. The guy looked at it, and probably because I'm a woman, tried to aggressively push me towards a new door and opener for $6K when everything outside of the wire was in great shape. DO NOT use this company under any circumstances. We went with them and paid $2,000 for a new garage door opener. We paid this amount because we were told we would have a lifetime warranty on it. After we paid and signed everything, the technician said oh we can't honor the warranty unless you upgrade your springs for $800-1200 more because your door is too heavy. So we asked them to take it down as we only paid this much to receive the warranty. We were told to wait for the technician to talk to his manager. After a lot of back and forth they are unwilling to do anything and stated all sales are final. Upon talking to some coworkers, they had a the same or similar experience. DO NOT USE THEM. Had a technician come out to tune up my doors. I suspected that the springs on my 16ft door had broken, which was confirmed. Because I needed the door repaired I went ahead and let the tech replace the springs and rollers. Charged me $2300. Lowe's will professionally install the same door new, complete with all new hardware for $2100. Consumer beware. These people are way over priced and will take advantage of you. Called A1 Garage Door Service for new belt for Garage Door. Called the Toll free number of 844-214-2724 and asked if hey would just give me the part number, but they said they would only have a person come out for an estimate. Fair enough, had them come out and they said it was a combination part of the track and belt and said it would be $938.74 to get the part and replace. Took the guy about 30 minutes to replace the part. I would have done it myself, but was not sure what needed to be ordered. Service Technician was a little surprised at the cost of the part, but I said we didn't really have a choice and needed to get it fixed. The Technician was very professional and answered all my questions. I did some research and looked up the part number from the sealed box and turns out the price I found online was $174.00 for the entire assembly, but I was charged over $600.00 for the part. I will never go with this company again, charge triple what the part costs to a consumer, contractors get a break on cost so they had less than or equal to the $174.00 for the part. Discovered that our garage door company (Ideal Garage Door) got bought out by A1. When I called the local office they said they could no longer service our doors (14 ft) because they now have a 12 ft limit. I found this hard to believe so I continued to investigate and got directed to an office in Dallas Texas. When I inquired as to why they would turn away business they were already established with, they agreed to continue their service on our doors. Our complex has 124 units (124 large garage doors), of which I own 10. Getting a call to service 10 doors in one service visit is really a no-brainer. I was then directed to Milo Hahn, who said they would be happy to have the service call, and Milo set the date up two weeks in advance so I could coordinate with 10 tenants. After agreeing to the date (Jan 21) for the service and coordinating with all my tenants, I thought I'd better get confirmation that the service technician was scheduled to show. So, I called Milo - got nothing but crickets. Left messages - got no response. I had the technicians phone number from the last time he serviced the doors so I called him, and he falsely claimed he didn't know what his schedule would be. I kept calling Milo and getting her voicemail. Finally got through to her only to discover she did NOT have me on the schedule at all!! Milo Hahn completely dropped the ball and did not have a legitimate excuse for her failure. In my opinion If this is how they operate and treat customers, they won't be in business for long. At our annual HOA meeting we intended to announce to all the owners that A1 Garage Door would be our 'go too garage door company', but instead we will inform the owners to stay away from A1and go with another local company. That's 124 doors they lost as a result of incompetence in scheduling the work. If anybody at A1 reads this they should consider handing Milo her walking papers, or keep her out of the scheduling responsibilities, as she clearly can not handle such matters. I've been told the main office for A1 is in Phoenix, so why they have clowns in Dallas Texas messing up work opportunities is beyond comprehension. read more

We read the reviews of this company after we signed the "extensive" contract (shame on us) and had our attorney in the family review it. They definitely shield themselves from liability. With that said they stood completely behind their Product and service. After we got thru the first few phone calls with a woman that was absolutely not customer service trained, we then only spoke to very knowledgeable people. Our entire replacement door was installed but we noticed an issue with the door and reported it. It apparently had been damaged in shipment. They immediately ordered a few new panels, promptly replaced them and then had the door painted soon after. We called A1 Garage Door Service 3 times over a span of 10 days to get a quote and finally spoke with a representative. Each time they promised to have someone call us but each time we were let down. We were then pressed for time to source an RV door for our project and the completion date was pushed out. They left us in a very bad situation as our build schedule was delayed. I don't know how this company stays in business if they don't even have the decency to return a customer's call. In the end one of the door panels was damaged and they ordered a second one. 6 months of waiting. They also provided the incorrect style door rails and I had to wait an additional 8 months until they ordered and installed the correct ones. The installation guys who did the follow up repairs were nice which is why I gave them 2 stars. But their repair guy was a bait and switch artist..... Our main garage spring failed around the same time and we took their word on a phone quote. What started at a $350. repair quickly doubled to a $700. repair. When I balked he reminded me since he came out I would still have to pay him a service call fee even though he did nothing but try to upsell me. What a scam!! I had an issue with the light on the motor. Since I've used A1 for a number of things go wrong with the original door put in at time my home was built I have found that A1 actually listens to and answers questions. They never rush you. Everyone I've dealt with there from Bree and Kiki in the office are so professional. Joseph Gleaves was my technician on my appointment. He is so professional. After he resolved the problem he also made sure that everything else on the door was operating properly and explained everything as he went. Joseph was respectful of my property and made sure I was satisfied and understood everything. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND A1 for your garage needs. The value of this type of service is perfect. I had a maintenance contract with these guys after a repair a couple years ago. First year of maintenance was absolutely fantastic. Between the first year and the second year, A1 was sold to some huge conglomerate this is buying up garage door companies all over the valley. Their techs are now on a commission base which gives them the insensitive to sell you over priced services that you don't need. Cory Calhoun came out on my second service appointment and 100% intentionality destroy my door trying to sell me springs that were not needed. My door literally fell off 20 minutes after he left. I had used A1 garage service for years across multiple homes I've owned. When I first started using them they were honest, hardworking people that had an affordable service compared to their competitors. I recently had them install another opener in our house in Queen Creek. The price was higher but I had figured it was just inflation driven so I paid them to do the work. Much to my surprise I had a conversation with a friend who recently replaced their opener to the same jackshaft type opener I did and paid about 30% of the cost I did. When I called around other competitors they were in the same price as my friends, so this is at the level of gouging to be frank. Yes, your margins are nice. But you have destroyed the business relationship you had with a loyal client in doing so. There's a saying they have in the stock market. "Pigs get fat, hogs get slaughtered." I had two other openers that I was going to replace but it sure as hell is not going to be with your company. read more
