I'm leaving this review because Total Wine needs to clearly disclose how its ID policy actually…read moreaffects parents shopping with their children. My 22-year-old daughter and I were shopping at the San Ramon location. She has accompanied me to this same store many times before without an issue. I was purchasing alcohol for myself; my daughter was not purchasing or selecting alcohol. We actually made it all the way through checkout. The cashier rang up my items and then asked if I would like to sample a spritzer I was considering purchasing. I said yes. She canceled the transaction so that I could go to the sampling counter, with the understanding that I would return afterward and complete my purchase. At the sampling counter, another employee, whom I understood to be a manager, asked my daughter for ID. My daughter was NOT sampling anything. She explained that she had her California DMV-issued digital ID, but the manager said Total Wine requires a physical ID. I have no problem with a business choosing not to accept digital ID. I also understand responsible alcohol sales and why a 22-year-old might be asked for identification. What I have a problem with is what happened next. The manager gave ME the sample, but then informed me that she could not sell ME any alcohol because my daughter could not produce a physical ID. As I explained that my daughter wasn't purchasing or sampling alcohol--I was--the manager told me that because my daughter was with me, selling alcohol to me could risk their liquor license. I was also told that no one under 21 is allowed in the store. When I questioned how that could possibly work for parents shopping with their children, I was told that children can accompany their parents, but the parent cannot purchase alcohol unless the accompanying person can provide the required ID. I was further told that I could not take my daughter home and return alone to make my purchase that day; I would have to come back the following day. If that is truly Total Wine's policy, then SAY THAT CLEARLY TO CUSTOMERS. The policy should effectively read: "Your children are welcome to accompany you into the store. However, if we request identification from your accompanying child and they cannot provide an acceptable physical ID proving they are 21 or older, we will not sell alcohol to you. If your purchase is refused for this reason, you may also be prohibited from returning alone to make the purchase until the following day." Had that policy been clearly posted, I would have made sure my daughter brought her physical ID. Instead, we shopped normally, my purchase was actually rung up, and the transaction was only canceled because the cashier suggested that I go sample another product. My daughter being asked for ID isn't the reason for this review. My concern is a policy that allows parents and children to enter and shop together, but apparently permits the parent's purchase to be refused if the accompanying child cannot prove they are 21--and customers are not clearly informed of that consequence beforehand. If that is Total Wine's policy, put it on the door. Customers shouldn't discover it after they've finished shopping and reached the register.
