Yoav absolutely saved my girlfriend! She had a work thing in Hollywood and accidently locked her keys in the trunk. I of course directed her to AAA but they were no help. They unlocked the car but I guess the anti-theft system was triggered and did not allow them to open the trunk or turn on the car. Next up she called some guys sent from All State insurance. I lost a Nissan Intelligent Key. Never had to replace a car key before and was unpleasantly surprised to learn that it is an expensive mistake to make. When I called the Nissan dealership in DTLA, they literally said it would run me $450 plus applicable tax. Um, that is quite ridiculous. My jaw actually dropped. I picked up my jaw as quickly as I could and hung up. Immediately, I tried to figure some things out--like whether or not I needed a second key. I was not desperate and with that price tag, a spare key was starting to sound like an unnecessary luxury. Since it is not my car though, I was determined to replace the key but also planned to save as much money as possible. (To illustrate this point, I have replaced two side mirrors on two different cars when mechanics were trying to charge me $300-400 for something that costs $30-50 mirror and some time to replace yourself--be resourceful when it comes to car stuff. Here, I was limited because car key programming requires special, expensive equipment ) I conducted plenty of research and learned about cheaper options. First, I went to Yelp and requested quotes from several different auto locksmiths. I will not post who gave me what prices, but I'll give the different quotes: $80 then $120 (more info later), $175, $250 then $140 (just programming), $235, and two did not provide prices. This was before I decided to order an OEM Nissan Intelligent key on eBay for $40 (after shipping/taxes). If you go this route, make sure the Continental ID and FCC ID match your current key. I ordered the key because the $80 offer was contingent on me providing a blank key: $80 was the price for programming, basically. Ordered the key and received it within four days. I wanted to get the duplicate key done ASAP. I thought an appointment was set up with the $80 locksmith. Once I messaged the business confirming the terms, the price jumped to $120. I stopped responding because I was getting shady vibes. At that point, I was frustrated because it seemed like I had ordered a blank for nothing. So, then I had to start looking for locksmiths that would and could program my keys. Word to the wise, let them know upfront if your key needs to be cut because some of these locksmiths will try to take advantage of you and tack on an additional charge when it should be part of the programming price. BEWARE. My first calls were to two other Nissan dealerships. One said it was $164 and the other said $185 for reprogramming and cutting. I was actually thinking it would be the safest bet, but I could not justify wasting money at the dealership. I was weighing my options. Frankly, I also did not like that the dealership was already acting like my OEM unlocked key would not work. Red flag. After literally contacting about 10 more locksmiths on Yelp, I got a range for simply programming my keys. The lowest price I received was $95, but I'd have to drive past Sherman Oaks and they also said they're not responsible if something goes wrong--like what?! Take some accountability if your company screws up, jeez. Most prices were $120 or $140. For those prices, I would rather just take it to the dealership and have more faith and security. Eventually, I recalled requesting quotes from some of those first six and doubled back and asked for updated quotes for only programming/cutting. A1 had the best price by far, $85 to cut and program my Intelligent Key. To be clear, Yoav had the best deal from the very beginning because he would have provided the key and programmed/cut at $175 and with an unlocked, blank OEM key it went down to $85. The backup option I called said $95 programming + $10 for the cutting (not a fan of charging $10 for cutting a key that takes 30 seconds). When I went to A1's location near the Grove I had to call because no one was at the stall. It took Yoav about ten minutes to get to me and he got right to work. He did give me the spiel about it possibly not working if the key is not unlocked, but I said please try. He programmed both keys in less than 10 minutes. He cut my key in less than one minute. I paid him $85 and thanked him profusely. I would wholeheartedly return if I encounter this issue again. I literally saved hundreds. Not bad, not bad at all. Total replacement costs: $40 OEM Intelligent Key from eBay + $85 programming/cutting = $125! Thanks Yoav and A1. Still unhappy that I lost the key in the first place, but it is more palatable to save some money while getting two programmed keys for the car. Turn the lemon into lemonade. Could not be happier. Responsive + fast + friendly + competent + best deal = A1 indeed! read more
