We had dying Ash tree in the back yard, 60-70ft tall with a canopy spread over into two neighbor's backyards. Sy came by within 24hrs of us calling for an estimate. The first time he came out was an informal estimate he wasted no time and was very straight forward. He was able to scope out the tree while we were not home. Told us that the tree could last one more season then it would become dangerous and more expensive to remove. I went out to get 3 other estimates. Each company took much longer and had a more formal process, checklists, and forms, and follow-up calls, and in-person walk-throughs ect... We ended up calling Sy back and he squeezed us in before the weather got too bad. Our neighbors commented on how nice the crew was. They had to remove a fence on our property and the neighbor's to get to the canopy with a bucket truck. After cutting the tree, they left our backyard in better shape than they found it. They even cleaned out the gutters on the garage where branches had fallen. They cleaned the alleyway of debris. And left us the wood for the fireplace. Just had a large tree cut down in the front of our house. The tree was wedged between our front deck and fence and I was worried about how they'd get it out without damaging things. In 15 minutes they had the tree down, the debris all cleared, and were off to the next job. Excellent work. No damage and no disruption to the neighborhood. I can't add much to what others have already said. Sy and A-1 Tree service are absolutely amazing. They trimmed quite a few trees in my yard last spring and did a fantastic job. Sy stopped by to give me an estimate the same day I called, but he couldn't get the job scheduled right away as they were booked. However, he came back the next day to remove a large branch that had broken off but hadn't fallen all the way down, because he was worried that it would fall and injure my 3-year old. He didn't charge me extra for the special visit, and the price for the whole job was very reasonable. Very professional and I could hardly tell they had been there, except for my beautifully trimmed trees. I have never been so enthusiastic about a contractor. I hate to see a tree cut down, but I honestly wish I had more work for them. I also wish these guys did plumbing, roofing, electrical work, general contracting... Anyway, all of the reviews are true: prompt with the estimate, prompt with the scheduling, prompt with the tree removal, didn't try and charge me more than he estimated even though the tree was in a weird spot and tough to remove, they put anything they had to move right back where it was before, it was the best money I ever spent! Sy was really good! I don't usually write reviews on here, but felt like I should! This was the 1st time I was calling for tree removal & Sy made the whole process really easy! To be honest, we didn't even meet him face to face at all. I called several places to get a quote & his was one of the lower ones! We had about 6 trees in the backyard which needed to be removed & he came to take a look at them while we were at work (the backyard is accessible). We were trying to set up a date when he could stop by to remove them, we thought it would be done in a couple of weeks, but one day he called me & said "I can actually stop by tomorrow morning if you want?". We agreed & by the time we were home the next day after work, all the trees along with the stumps were gone! There wasn't a mess either & he also removed for us some stone blocks that had been left in the backyard by the previous owner. Oh & the crazy part was that after all the work had been done, he didn't even call for his payment! We had been given an invoice of how much it was going to be, but I actually had to call HIM to see how we could pay him (cash, check, etc), he wasn't on top of us trying to receive his payment, which I found to be really refreshing! My neighbors tree overhanged my peaked roof. The branch itself was the size of a medium sized tree. Our homes are three feet apart. Sy's crew knew how to cut pieces from the branch and with lines, swing the pieces to the rear of the homes thus avoiding the roofs. Sy supervised the entire time and participated as needed. I own a number of investment properties and Sy/A-1 are top notch from my experience with a lot of contractors. My first mistake was waiting for the city of Chicago to cut down a dead parkway tree. It took them a year to come out. When they finally made it, they left most of the stump behind. If I had it to do over again, I'd have called A-1 earlier and had them do the tree removal too. That didn't happen, but I did have them remove the two stumps. A-1 returned my call right away, gave a simple estimate, and took the stumps out quickly and completely. They also didn't damage the parkway retaining wall, which showed they had some skill. Use them, they're fast, cheap, and good. I paid by check and don't know if they take credit cards. read more

I needed a 40-foot box elder tree removed. I called three companies and in the end, Sy at A-1 Tree service gave me a price slightly lower than the others. On tree-removal day, he showed up with a large bucket-truck, a chipper-shredder truck, and about 5 dudes. They took down the tree in sections about 3-4 feet long, one at a time, lowering the sections with a rope. They shredded all the wood and hauled it away. They avoided the garage and electrical wires. When I purchased my 3 flat, I had a dead tree that is about 40ft tall. This summer it completely dried out so when the rain storm came through last weekend, a large limb broke and was dangling in the power lines and partly into my neighbor's yard. Over the years I've called several tree removal companies, most of them never showing up on removal days. The tree was difficult to get to, tangled in lines, next to my garage and partly suspended over my neighbor and a pine tree so only a cherry picker could be used. I had to do something so finally found A1 from Yelp, was amazed at all of the top reviews so decided to call. Within an hour, Sy came out, assessed the tree with a competitive quote and told me he could come out in 2 days. It ended up raining the day he was going to start so he actually called to tell me that they can't work near power lines. I've worked with many contractors, home service providers over the last few years and I've never had such profession, courteous service. They usually just never call back or don't show up when promised. The next day, I got home and this huge monster of a tree was gone! And, not a branch on the ground to be found, everything was cleaned up and he even put back and set up my patio furniture. I would HIGHLY recommend him. He's the tree whisperer! read more

Thank you, Sy, for the fine job cutting down my dead elm tree in Oak Park. Your man in the tree---Manero?---was quite the acrobat. Your crew on the ground was quick and hard working at hauling away all the logs and branches and feeding them into the chipper. A-1 gave me an estimate for cutting down my tree last August, based on driving a truck into my back yard, up close to the tree. I wanted the work done in the winter. When Sy took a second look at the job last week, he decided the truck would have to be driven over a sidewalk, possibly damaging the sidewalk. So instead of using the truck, he had his tree acrobat climb the tree, with a recent snow still whitening the branches---all at the same price of his original estimate. I appreciate A-1 for not taking an easy shortcut that could of broken my sidewalk. I appreciate that you stuck by your original estimate.
