This place is nothing short of extraordinary!! I came to the Bay Area to visit some friends and we were really craving some Indian food. Luckily this place was near us and we decided to give it a shot. Words can not describe the experience we had here. I have Indian food very often and have experienced disappointment a number of times when eating out. Usually the food is expensive, incredibly oily, just doesn't taste good, or the service is terrible. However at Aangan, I felt the exact opposite. We were greeted by a very kind lady as soon as we entered and she kept helping our table throughout. She was very polite and made us feel like guests at her own place, rather than just customers. The food was incredible with many different flavors of Nepal, and the portioning was great as well! We ordered the Chili Chicken and Momos, and Mango Lassi which absolutely blew us away! WOW. The price was amazing, especially compared to the other Indian restaurants throughout the Bay Area. It is very difficult to find a restaurant that's just right. I am speechless about the food here, because oh my goodness it is really good here! My family was getting out from swim practice (late evening) and we were searching for excellent food available late. We found Aangan and are very glad we did. We tried three kinds of naan, curries, momo, and pakora and really enjoyed them all. And the menu has many options so we can try new things next time. Has slid down another notch under new owners. This was our favorite place, but no longer. C Momo, chicken: fried, very different than usual steamed. Huge; bready wrappers, tossed with sweet-sour sauce. Eight massive dumplings would serve 8 people as a substantial starter. If you're broke it would be a cheap meal for 2 nights. Saag Paneer: bears no resemblance to previous version under former owner Bishnu. Now just like every other steam-table/buffet type dish. Salmon tandoori: overcooked but generous portion. Didn't taste much if any seasoning on the fish. Lamb Boti Kebab: asked for rare, got well-done. But the onions caramelized nicely on the superheated platter. Rice Pulau: Some mixed frozen vegetables, along with lightly fried cashew pieces. Good starch with the curries, not remarkable but unoffensive. Khashi Ko Bhutuwa, dry curried goat: Waitress brought us Khashi Ko Masu, the "wet" goat curry. We told her this was not the dish we wanted, and about ten minutes later the Ko Bhutuwa showed up. Sadly, it's gotten worse even from last month's visit. Extremely tough meat and way oversalted. Took leftovers home, rinsed it off, braised it for 90 min and it was STILL tough altho at least edible. Write this off forever as a no-go. We were very disappointed with our dinner. Aangan has dropped a full level in quality and execution under the new owners. It's off our list for now. read more

The following orders were super bland: basmati rice, tandoori chicken breast, and garlic naan. No salt. The chicken thali is a good value and I enjoyed the raita and mango pickles on the side. That's pretty much it. The chicken curry was not very spicy and also lacked salt. The service wasn't horrible. Our waitress appeared to be attentive but vanished when a question was asked and didn't think to clear the table of empty dishes or cups until asked to do so. Hamro aangan. What a little treasure. I guess it means Our backyard. And how perfect, you have homestyle food, and you can sit in their backyard. We sat back there, it was quiet, and relaxing. And the tables were spaced well enough apart. The service was friendly and helpful. We started with the steamed Momo. (perfectly cooked and flavored!). Also had the chicken chili, which though it didn't look like the photo, it was even better than we thought it would be. The Mango lassi was superb. Just the right amount in volume, and sweetness and tartness. They also had other flavors of lassi (Banana or strawberries too). I'd like to try that next time. There was a bug in my lamb tikka masala. Like, a big ol' fly. It looked sad. I was going to say I bet I looked sadder, but y'know... can't get sadder than drowning in sauce. Looking for an economical dinner before settling in for the night, I chanced upon Hamro Aangan tonight and decided to give it a go considering the favourable reviews on here. This Nepalese cuisine restaurant in the downtown Area of Albany thankfully has a private lot to facilitate easy parking --- not that I needed it seeing that it was Sunday night. The restaurant was pretty empty as could be expected for a Sunday dinner with only one other table being occupied. We were quickly seated and promptly ordered the chicken momo (the Nepali / Indo-Tibetan counterpart of the potsticker.) and the (dahi) batata puri to whet up our collective appetites. For the main course, we went for the Kukhura ki Ledo(Nepali Chicken Curry ), Matter Paneer, Masala Naan, Roti, Plain Naan, and Basmati Rice. The chicken momo was simply amazing. The chicken fillings inside were well seasoned and precooked. The spicy sauce that came with it was unlike any I've had at other places. In short, it was the best I've ever had. The batata puri with the yogurt and sweet tamarind sauce was spot on! On first bite, the mellow yogurt takes over your mouth followed swiftly by the sweetness of the tamarind sauce as you bite into it. After chewing for a few seconds, the onion kicks in quickly followed by the bhujia (deep fried chick pea flour batter that's been pressed through a ricer --- for lack of a better explanation), and what I gathered to be potatoes or garbanzo beans. I recommend it highly! Not all was hunky-dory though; the roti was ok but forgettable and the masala naan had cheese and onions in it. Cheese? That already turned me off of it. I asked for a Plain Naan, to offset the disappointing roti, and I am happy to say it was pretty good. The Matter Paneer was pedestrian. Fortunately the good stuff far outshone and more than made up for the lackluster performance of the under performers. The dinner was rounded with a really good serving of Rasmalai. The chicken momo and the batata puri in themselves alone was worth the visit. I'll definitely be back. read more

After Dinner #1 at Eureka!, we continued our evening food tour with Dinner #2 at Hamro Aangan. Indian curry flows through my veins, but I'm much less familiar with true Nepalese. As expected, the menu was practically identical to North Indian fare (there is significant overlap), so we made sure to seek recommendations from the Nepalese waitresses of items that you can't find in India. Here's what they had to say. ***CHICKEN CURRY - Superb boneless chicken cooked in Nepalese household. Slightly different than traditional North Indian curry, but it wasn't super noteworthy or fascinating. Pleasantly spicy, slightly watery. Kinda meh. There truly were big chunks of boneless chicken--I guess it's got that going for it. ***CHICKEN MOMO - Minced chicken with vegetables mixed with Himalayan spices wrapped in flour dough, steamed. If we're being honest with ourselves, minced chicken just isn't really that good, and the Himalayan spices couldn't save it. This was dipped in a mild sauce of tomato & cilantro that wasn't super intriguing. I will give them credit for making the dough for the wrappers from scratch, and for not making them too thick. ***KHASHI KO MASU - A superb Goat Dish served in a rich gravy Common Nepali Household. This dark gravy was spicy, soupy, & particularly lamby tasting, and I don't mean that in a laudatory way. The meat was cooked until tender, but it was still a bit dry & stringy due to its leanness. Like the chicken above, there wasn't really anything remarkable to differentiate this from Indian cuisine. ***AANGAN KULFI - Pistachio flavored, reduced milk, Indian ice cream. Topped with vermicelli. I believe this is more Indian than Nepalese, but it's inappropriate to turn down kulfi when it's offered. This was some pretty great stuff, definitely in the realm of delicious & properly made kulfi, with that thick, almost meaty texture and uber sweetness. Though it says pistachio flavored, there was a strong mango essence that took over. This was the best part of the meal. By the way, there was no vermicelli on ours, though I don't think it would be necessary. ALL IN ALL: I often lament that there aren't more countries or cultures in the world, for our culinary choices are so limited. We were really looking forward to this meal, hoping & praying that our palettes would encounter some beautiful new flavor combinations, but this ended up being just a slightly modified version of something familiar, and I'm not sure that I would consider the modification an improvement. Frankly, Indians make better curry, and the Chinese make better dumplings. Maybe we just need to go to Nepal to try it at the source. read more

My mouth dropped to the ground when I saw the waiters carrying these huge platters of food to their diners. "What is that?!" I thought to myself in awe. Apparently, I also verbalized my wonder, since my cousin then promptly informed me that one of the most popular dishes at Hamro Aangan was the meat platter. You have a choice between chicken, lamb, or fish platters (vegetarian options also available for human herbivores) for around $10. I came in hungry and I left very, very full: my chicken platter came with a bowl of basmati rice, papadum (the thin bread crisp), naan, chicken curry, saag paneer (spinach paneer), dal (lentil stew), raita, and aachar (pickled veggies). The best tasting dish by far - as measured in light years - would have to be the chicken curry. If I lived closer to Hamro, I would totally get an order of it with naan to-go every week! Perfect amount of spices, and medium spiciness was excelente. I was not a fan, and probably never will be, of the aachar due to its weird aftertaste, and both the dal and paneer were super bland. Upon arrival, you'll notice a huge viewable menu next to the main entrance. I checked it out, and walked right in. It was 11am, only I didn't know they open at 11:30. The owner behind the counter still welcomed me even though I was early. Kudos to this man and his fine establishment. I did not eat here, but the dining area appeared clean and ready. Pretty fancy looking to say the least. As far as my take home order, I tried the: ~ Chicken Tikka Masala ($8.99) - A nice buttery saucy tomato gravy, with marinaded chicken. It was made just right! My only wish was that the chicken pieces would be a bit bigger. But regardless, eating this with the butter naan brought out a sweetness in the combo. ~ Khashi Ko Masu ($8.99) - Per the owner, this is a popular Nepali type of goat dish. Common and almost similar to a Filipino goat dish. This was one of the best tasting goat I've had in a long time. Soooo tender and the stew was sooo savory! I'd totally get this item again, and recommend trying it. ~ Baingan Bharta ($7.99) - Mmmm, eggplant! This is always one of my favorite Indian dishes. Although a bit oily, it did not hurt the taste. It was just about perfect! ~ Butter Naan ($1.99) - Nice and fresh! Soft, fluffy, and toasty on the bottom. Not super flattened like some places. A standard MUST! ~ Garlic Naan ($2.50) - Also good, but some people may think it's too garlicy! As I waited for my order, I chatted with Bishnu (the owner / I hope I got his name right) and he explained that he has four women chefs working in the back for him. Their cooking just gives that motherly touch! He's been in the business for 5 years, and explained they're the only ones carrying certain Napalese style dishes; About six dishes. There are other Indian restaurants in the area, but they don't do Napalese. He seemed like a good-natured guy, and I plan to comeback again someday. Most likely to dine in and to try other dishes. Just before I left, another lady walked by. Smelled the aroma from the outside. She stopped and said outloud, "oooh that smells good", checked out the menu like I did, and ordered. I just chanced upon this place in downtown Albany, though they've been open for 12 years, and I must have driven past it many times. It's a pleasant, if belated, discovery, combining familiar North Indian dishes with less familiar, and therefore more interesting, Nepali dishes. It's a storefront, decorated inside in muted shades of red and orange, with dark woodwork, and Nepali paintings and banners. Two- and four-seat tables, with glass-covered white tablecloths. The side counter appears once to have been a bar, though there's now no bar seating. A limited beer and wine selection, including two Nepali beers (Yay! Another country for my lifelist!) is on the food menu. Friendly, efficient, and informative server/cashier. Of course I ordered from the Nepali side of the menu: royal paneer. Lightly fried oblongs of home-made cheese (in whose home is not clear, but they say they don't make it in-house); in a mild, buttery, and somewhat sweet pale orange curry sauce, with red onions and unspecified Himalayan spices. $13.99, with basmati or brown rice (that or naan is probably essential with a swimming-in-sauce dish like this) a $1.99 extra. Delicious. Oh, the beer. I chose Mustang Premium Lager (named after a region of Nepal, not the horse or the car), 5.5%. Produced by GO Brewery (Nepal) Pvt. Ltd., in Nawalparasi. A very mainstream international light lager, resembling a lightly-hopped American adjunct beer, or any number of brews from India. I ordered tandoori shrimp, that came on a hot platter with a good number of shrimp but a smattering or skimpy threads of shredded cabbage for 20.00 Bucks!! I can buy a whole bag of Argentinian shrimp for 26.00 that will last me for two weeks. The skillet medium did not come with naan or rice of which I had to dole out another 3.00 dollars for rice. I've been to Indian restaurants around the country where you get a platter of food that includes rices. And naan. The service seemed mediocre, it seemed to take forever for us to receive our food, during which we should been offered naan and sauce while we waited. My friend ordered noodles he said he wasn't impressed either when we got into the car. I will say I liked the music. The waitress was okay, she was polite, but didn't seem attentive. Color me Unimpressed. I could've made better food at home. My absolute favorite place to eat Indian food in the Bay Area (even though it's technically Indo-Nepalese). I've been here at least 5 times and it never disappoints. Their garlic naan is HEAVENLY. Their chicken biryani and chicken tikka masala are awesome. (Ask for spicy chicken tikka masala, it won't be that spicy and this is coming from someone who doesn't really eat spicy food.) I've tried a few of their other dishes but these are my favorites. Would definitely recommend this place to anyone in the Bay Area looking for excellent Indian food. Has more variety than Vik's. Aangan's a pretty good sit-down Himalayan place. The decor's pretty simple, but it's usually fairly full (at the same time I've never had to wait eating here) and everyone's having a good time. I had the chicken chow mein on my last visit, and it was delicious - tons of noodles, just the right amount of heat, at $10 was priced pretty well. Loved this place. Came here for bday dinner and was very pleased with the food, service, & ambiance. There were two huge parties of people when we came in, & both sets looked like they were enjoying their feasts. We ordered chai tea, aloo appetizer, saag paneer, prawn curry, rice, & naan. We ordered everything spicy, & it was funny because 3 people from the kitchen ended up coming out to check on us at one point or another. Their "spicy" is definitely hot, but it was edible for me. Being from Chicago, I simply don't get the whole vegan/vegetarian craze in San Fran. On the other hand, you don't miss the meat when it comes to Indian food. At Hamro Aangan, you can go vegetarian and still get full flavor. I ordered the aloo tikki chaat and after one bite, I realized how millions of people in India can be vegetarian and be fully satisfied. The description is a bit misleading - it's basically potato croquettes topped with garbanzo beans and a sauce made from spices. I ordered it spicy and they didn't hold back on the heat. The heat lingered on my tongue and made my lips red. Surprisingly, this was only an appetizer priced at $5.99. This one dish was packed with flavor and was really filling. It's like this location is cursed ... it's seen multiple restaurants over the past several years ... hopefully this one is here to stay. The owner / manager is quite a character and salesman - and has a strong opinion on his dishes that will delight the customer. I'd ordered take out a few days prior and enjoyed the food so the 4 of us came here for dinner. We ordered a variety of dishes - and all were tasty - I especially liked the tikka masala as it was on the sweeter side, although a bit runnier. We were recommended to order the pakora appetizer. Great food, incredible value. I convinced my good friends in El Cerrito to come here as it was off their radar (but not off Yelp's, apparently). It's a family place with simple decorations and a cozy feel. No frills whatsoever. The showrunners here are very friendly and readily supplied recommendations. They really pushed the chaat, which was nice but not my thing (I'm told it's better in the summertime). Other than that, everything was a hit--the potato samosa, tikka masala, lamb, and the veggies as well. We had two types of naan--regular and cheese. Yum. Really good eating. Okay I've come to Hamro Aangan 3 times in one week. And in that week I took fellow yelper Veronica L. as I know she loves Indian food as much as I do. I have never frequented a restaurant as much as I have for Hamro Aangan. Everything I've ordered was absolutely delicious and I was never disappointed. The main waiter or manager calls you boss right when you walk in which is so cute! The waitress always comes over to check up on you. These are the foods I recommend - Cheese Naan (you may be thinking, this isn't necessary or I usually get garlic or butter naan, but once you order this, you`ll see how necessary it is now to every Indian meal) -Garlic Naan (tastes heavenly) -Chicken Tikka Masala (it comes in different levels of spicyness and as I am a spicy loving korean of course I get the spiciest!) -Chicken S? (okay I forgot the name of it but it says on the menu something like chicken in exotic spicy sauce- really good!) For some reason, most indian food places put too much butter or make you feel gross after because of all the oil and gunk thats in it, but this place doesnt give me that effect (or perhaps I've become immune after all these years... :( ) Honestly, forget mount everest, taste of himalayas (which is totally overpriced), and house of curries and come here. Interesting reading the reviews here. Our experience was great. The prices were reasonable and the food was hot, flavorful and of high quality. The naan was perfect. It was a little weird to order and not get rice and have to order it later. I don't know how often it happens that someone wants a big bowl of chicken curry whatever to just eat like soup. They should raise the price a little and include rice or at least ask diners who don't order it if they would like to order it. All in all, we'll be back. read more

Definitely one of the best Indian place I've ever had and I am so happy that it is right here in Albany! I brought my family here on a Friday night and the place was lively, not packed but with the right amount of customers! We did not know what dishes to get that would be best for us so I asked the waiter for recommendations. Right off the bat he asked us whether we like spicy or creamy kind of curry, and we opted for the creamy. Then he proceeded to pick out 4 dishes that he believed would be the best for us - Chicken Tikka Masala, Lamb Korma, Chicken Biryani, and Tandoori Chicken with 1 garlic naan and 1 butter naan. I added the Chicken Momo as our appetizer as well. It took a while for our food to come out but I guess it was because they waited until they can serve all to us at once and we were also starving. When the food finally arrived, we proceeded to stuff ourselves with curries and naan. Everything was SO delicious!!! Definitely some great recommendations from our server. I really liked their chicken momo since the meat inside was so juicy and the curry sauce was also very tasty. I recommend eating the momo while it is still hot since it's when it's the most juiciest! Our favorites of the night was the garlic naan, the lamb korma and the chicken momo. My family and I all liked it so much that we were already talking about what we should get the next time we come back! The price is great as well! In general, I have been underwhelmed by most north Indian restaurants north of Sunnyvale. Sure, we have some good dosa spots, and Vik's is a gem, but overall the north Indian curries are mediocre, dry and over spiced even on a good night. Good thing we found Hamro Aangan, one the better Indian restaurants in the East Bay. The menu is pretty standard, but the standards are done right. He ordered: Chicken Tikka Masala (medium), garlic naan I ordered: Lamb Palak (medium-hot), keema naan First, the meat in both of our curries were moist and fall-apart tender, well permeated with the flavors of the sauce. The spice factor in both of our dishes seemed to match well with our expectations (mine had a keen bite but not overwhelming; his was a more mellow burn). The palak (spinach) in my lamb was fresh and just-wilted, providing a nice contrast to the slow cooked curried meat. As past yelpers have noted, the garlic naan here was a definite win: there's nothing shy about the garlic flavor, which is just how we like it. The keema naan (lamb stuffed) was tender and well flavored, although I think I prefer the version sold at Chaat Cafe on University, which is greasier and saltier, like the junk food I want this to be. In both cases, the bread sported the crisp exterior and pillowy center of a good tandoori oven baked naan. The folks who run this place are friendly and personable. The prices here are pretty standard, 7-10 bucks for an entree and a couple dollars for elaborations (samosa, special naans, raita, etc.). A few reviewers mentioned that the portions seemed small, but I think that might be an optical illusion: your curries come in deep metal bowls that look "small" until you pour them out on your plate, at which point they are obviously as much food as a serving at most other restaurants. Namaste Belly's !!!! This place is ahhhmaazzzing !!!! I was down the street at the Albany Bowl with a group of 15 people, who were all extremely unimpressed with the bowling food and we needed something delicious and stupendous to save our food sadness. I yelped (thank you yelpers!!) for a nearby restaurant and I am so thankful that Hamro Aangan came up on the top of the list. From the phone call letting the restaurant know that 15 people were going to be dropping in very soon, to taking INDIVIDUAL orders so that we didn't have to group pay, to making sure everyone was happy it was probably one of the best customer service experiences I've had in a long time. But seriously, the food?! SO DELICIOUS. Everyone was incredibly happy with their dishes and we had a super diverse crowd of orderers. For me, I ordered the vegetable briyani - and I am so grateful I did, that was the best thing I've eaten in awhile. The smell of that fresh cilantro with the spices and fragrance of rice - soooo delicious. They also had some nice chunky vegetables in there too, which was a pleasant surprise - and everything was FRESH veggies - no frozen stuff just tossed in. This was the real deal. It also came with some Raita, and that was the most amazing flavor touch - it cooled the heat from the rice but wasn't that washed out raita - this was nicely spiced on its own and super fresh tasting. My husband tried the Nepalese goat dish and he really loved it a lot. We also ordered Naan and some Gulab Jamun, and our indian friend dining with us said it was as good as her mother's. That was some serious high praise. The only bummer thing, is that we live in San Jose and this amazing food is so far away. However, now I have even more reasons to visit the Berkeley/Albany area so I will have to find time to come back. I haven't had much Nepali food but we tried to get the most Nepali things on the menu to check them out. Quick note, we went there during the cold snap of 12/2013 and I don't know if they have a heater inside but if they do it wasn't working. On the plus side, the food was real hot and and spicy and once it came the temperature wasn't as big a deal. Also before i get in to the main dishes, the garlic naan here was particularly good. Chicken Chwela - real interesting and spicy appetizer. It's served cold and consists of kind of tough and really spicy chicken with these dried rice flakes and potatoes in some sort of chutney. I don't know that I'd get it again but it was quite interesting. The rice flakes are a cool textural thing. Khashi Ko Masu - goat curry and it's quite goaty. The cuts of meat were quite tough but it was tasty overall. Eggplant Curry - very different than other eggplant curries i've had. Almost more chinese tasting. Chicken Momo - The dumplings were goooood. Not that I didn't enjoy the other dishes but the chicken momo is the real reason to eat here. We should have just gotten 4 orders of this. read more

Warning: I am a sucker/lover of south Asian food, so be forewarned. Anyway, this is now my goto place for Indian food during lunch, and they make the Indian restaurants that I use to go to when I was at Cal look plain. Their menu is pretty big, though the descriptions are rather poor to be honest. The tikka masala is the classic tomato and dairy combo. The Korma is spice and dairy based and I do recommend this extra spicy If you like heat. The kadai comes with a lot of bell pepper pieces in a yellow sauce. The vindaloo is bright red, vinegar based, and very spicy, and looks nothing like the brown stuff near school. If you love buffalo wings, you'll love this, but watch out, order it low on heat, because it's spicy! The spinach and paneer dish (paneer sag? Palak paneer?) which comes with your thali, is some of the best creamed spinach you'd find. Chicken chilly was excellent as well, alightly fried and married to a mix of peppers and onions in a lighter but well spiced sauce. And the -no masu goat dish, a bowlful pile of well stewed goat riblets, mmmmmmmm... Can't wait to go back for that. The naan, especially the garlic and cheese naan, are dam good, the best I've had. The onion naan is filled with green onion which is different from regular onion you'd see in other places. All the naan choices are filled/stuffed to the edge with garlic/ cheese/ green onion/etc. You can eat them by themselves. If you are having a potato chip withdrawal, get a papadam. They don't skimp on the food either, it's chunk after soft chunk of meat- you don't see that very often. read more
