This restaurant space has turned over a few times and I think this time it's a keeper!! My family of 4 (2 adults and 2 kids) had dinner tonight after discovering that this restaurant finally opened. We looked at the menu the first weekend it opened and decided that we'd like to try it so we picked tonight to do just that. The service was very good and our water glasses were filled at least 3 times! Our server was nice and attentive. The restaurant was low key and welcoming (compared to Cafe Raj which always seems stressful even when they are not busy). I ordered the chicken platter which was chicken curry, the lentil soup, the yogurt sauce, rice, small naan and the a piece of the chick pea chip. Very good portioning considering it was only $7.50. My husband had the vegetarian platter which was same as mine, but he was able to choose which vegetarian curry he wanted to have. He chose the okra and says it was very good. The kids (6 and 8) had the chicken tikka masala. For reference, they love Cafe Raj (both chose it to be their birthdays spots in 2009). They loved this dish so much my daughter say she wanted to come here for her birthday. We also had an order of naan and the keema roti (spiced ground lamb covered with flour roti and served w a yogurt and mint chutney). The keema roti was flavorful and substantial. The yogurt and mint chutney had some deliciously unexpected heat. For dessert, i ordered the galub jamon and husband had the rice pudding as suggested by the owner. THe galub jamon needed a little more rose flavor, but had a nice fresh taste. The rice pudding (kheer) had little pieces of coconut and another fruit (raisins?) in it and was nice too. We've never had Indo-Nepalese food before so we felt this to be on the Indian side, but that could also be because we ordered Indian dishes? but this isnt a drawback, we'd come back and order more! Rice was fluffy and nice. The naan was fresh an very large! We initially ordered the tandoori chicken, but was told it takes 15 minutes. If we weren't so hungry, we would have ordered this. Next time, definitely next time!! 2 cons: 1) the servings were on the small size, BUT the pricing matched it; 2) rice and naan were a separate charge, but i guess this allows for more control over what you want? Being vegetarian, I have had my fair share of Southeast Asian food (an easy go-to for veggie option, without defaulting to a vegetarian-only restaurant). I generally don't have as much of a taste for cuisine from this region; curry tends to be a bit harsh on my system. However, Hamro Aangan did convince my husband and I to try out this place, for a few key reasons: 1, high Yelp marks; 2, walking distance from home; 3, an alternative to Cafe Raj. He ordered the chicken tikka masala, which was creamy, flavorful, and amongst the better tikka masala he's tasted. It was not too heavy on the butter, but still satisfying. I had the vegetarian platter, which came with one (large) piece of white naan, yogurt dip and pappadum, a huge scoop of basmati rice, vegetable curry (my favorite of the dishes), and saag paneer. Everything was flavorful without me regretting it afterwards. Other perks included ample parking, very friendly service, and reasonable prices. Decent selection of vegan options, but that (to me) goes without saying for Southeast Asian/ Indian food. My only pointers are, come expecting Southeast Asian food (with some South Indian cuisine, but mostly Northern Indian); look for the restaurant named "Aangan" (the "Hamro" is hard to spot), and consider ordering a sample platter, which we felt was the best deal. This is not an ideal place if you're looking for simpler food, cleaner diet options, or "low carb" food. Cafe Raj, down the street on Solano, serves wheat naan. The owners are not as present here anymore and the food has suffered as a result. Recently had some basically raw chicken. We told the servers and they did nothing about it- didn't offer to replace the inedible food, didn't offer a refund, didn't even take the bleeding chicken off the table. UNACCEPTABLE. Lunch was tasty. As my partner and I decided to have Indian food, I thought this would be a good place to eat. The onion naan was delicious. Full of onion and no too doughy. This is my favorite Indian food restaurant ever... I always order Chicken Tikka Masala and Spicy Okra/Bhindi Masala, with everything as max spicy. I eat with Garlic naan. My boyfriend eats with a plain naan and basmati rice, and we basically clean up everything between the two of us. I also like the mango lassi. Tonight we ordered double this normal order plus a fish curry. We called in for take out and I paid over the phone. We live near Lake Merritt so some of the delivery services are out of range. This is how it is with Namaste Pizza but I can get Namaste Pizza on caviar, so I tried with ordering delivery for Aangan on Caviar but it's really messed up and I wasn't able to, so we ended up calling for takeout... the drive is far but the food is worth it. I recently met a man from Nepal who recommended this restaurant as the best in the East Bay for Nepalese food. Wanting to see if the recommendation lived up to its billing, I had to give it a try. Hands down, it's hard to imagine food with more flavor than here. Every dish was incredible and had my taste buds jumping with joy. The lamb biryani was top notch as was the prawn vindaloo. Hands down favorite Nepali restaurant in the Bay. Not that I've been to all the Nepali places... but it's delicious, the menu is huge, the staff/family is friendly, and it's damn good spicy. It's great coming with a group of friends and ordering a ton of dishes. I tend to get aloo gobi, chana masala, bangan bhartha, and some good ole naan. So I find myself, once again, feeling culinarily coddled. This family truly spoils its customers. My last visit included some childhood friends I'd not seen in decades. They had just finished a cross country drive and declared Aangan to be only the third restaurant they tried during their journey from the east coast. Dietary needs such as no gluten and dairy, tomato allergies severely limited their options in most restaurants. Feeling confident I asked the young server about some of the dishes. She was extremely knowledgeable and assured my friends that the kitchen would take care of them. Before long our table top was filled with sumptuous dishes. Starting with dishes from the menu the kitchen would adjust the dish to meet their needs. Going as far as to create a curry dish gluten, dairy and tomato free with shrimp. Much to the delight of my friends.As we stood out on the sidewalk after the meal both of my friends asked, "is this the way all restaurants are in Berkeley? " LOL I replied " no, not quite. I had to see what the hype was about! I heard about this place from my brother, and I was not disappointed!! I came in and was greeted right away! I am very pleased with the set up of this restaurant, it is very clean. I had the samosas, chicken tikki masala, goat curry with extra spice, butter naan, and garlic naan. CHICKEN TIKKI MASALA IS ABSOLUTELY AMAZING. I wasn't a fan of the goat but my brother loved it. Naan was nice and hot. Samosas were super filling so I wasn't able to finish the food. A real gem of a place not too far from my house. I love Indian food and Hamro Aangan has some of the best in the area. My boyfriend and I love coming here; the owner is super nice and he remembers his regular customers :). Favorites: -Thali: I like the fish, lamb, or goat. It comes with saag paneer, dal, raita, rice, and naan as well. We usually exchange the 1/2 plain naan for a whole garlic naan. -Chicken tikka masal: SO good, one of the best ones I've had. This is my new favorite restaurant. It's great on so many levels. The service was wonderful, we arrived about 30 minutes before closing time and still, they treated us warmly and didn't rush us at all. The staff was attentive but not hovering over us. But, the food!! Oh man, the food. Chicken makhani- WOW! Major props to the chef. This dish is obsess-worthy. It's bold, vibrant flavors with the tender chicken are pure perfection. It's a combination of soulful, comforting, flavorful and spicy. (Not too spicy, we ordered medium spice level and it had the perfect little kick) Just thinking about it makes me hungry! Chicken Momos: This place has the best chicken momos, hands down. The momos were a perfect size, stuffed with well-seasoned ground chicken, steamed to perfection and served with a tasty dipping sauce. It seems that they make them fresh because the momos were the last dish to come out. But, it was worth the wait. Baingan Bharta was delicious and paired perfectly with all the other flavors. Butter naan was fluffy, yet toasty and a perfect addition to the dishes. Oh and I can't forget the Chai, I had 2 servings. No sweetener necessary for this Chai. Yum! It was the perfect drink to balance it all out. The location is ample and humble. So it would accommodate a dinner with friends or family. The prices are very reasonable. Came here for picking up dinner for my family. The lady tells me it will be ready in 25 minutes, so I come in half an hour. When I reach the lady tells me it'll be another 5 minutes. I say ok and wait. 10 minutes later I ask how much longer and she tells me she's going into the kitchen to check. Comes out and tells me it'll still be another 7-8 minutes. This was a really nice neighborhood find. We were looking for something in the El Cerrito/Albany area, and I came across the restaurant on yelp. We arrived around 6:45 p.m. on a Monday evening. The restaurant was not too crowded the entire time we were there. Service was quick and efficient, and they explained a couple of the dishes we ordered. For appetizers, we started with gol goppas, which was fine, but the weakest part of our meal. It was just kind of bland. Fortunately, that was the first dish, and it only got better. We also had paneer pakoras, which were fantastic. They had great texture, and the sweet and spicy dips hit the spot. For entrees, she got the keema roti, which was very good. I ordered the saag paneer, and it was a substantial amount of spinachy goodness--we just forgot to order rice with it. The garlic naan came in handy. Overall, it was a pleasant evening; the restaurant has a nice atmosphere and is on a lively stretch along San Pablo. Parking is easy, and service is attentive. The prices are very reasonable. Came here for a late lunch- around 1:45, and it was pretty empty. We got cheese and garlic naan and it was so good. The cheese naan tasted like a healthy version of pizza, I definitely recommend getting it. For our actual meal we got the lamb and prawn biryani, and a mild and spicy chicken tikka masala. We ordered some according to Michelin's recommendation - Chicken Momo, Khashi Ko Masu and Chicken Biryani - and some other usual favorites of ours. Ordered everything medium spicy, which didn't taste spicy at all. Except for one dish that we think the chef accidentally made super hot. Service was slow on Saturday 1:30, it took more than half an our for our dishes to be prepared even though the restaurant was pretty empty. Chicken Tikka Masala was THE BEST!! The sauce was creamy and rich, and just incredibly delicious with naan. The chicken is first grilled tandoori style before being cooked with curry, so it's a little dry. Chicken Curry was great too. The chicken is stewed/cooked with this green chunky curry - so incredibly tender! The chicken itself is probably the best out of all dishes. Khashi Ko Masu was a goat dish with bones. It was more like a stew than curry, perfect on its own or with biryani rice. Lamb Boti was cubed tandoori lamb on a sizzling plater with lots of onions. The lamb was dry but I liked the onions and cucumbers on the side. Mint Chutney was a super spicy traditional Indian sauce that you dip / drizzle on the dish, loved it. Chicken Biryani is a flavored rice dish with 3 giant pieces of chicken. I've never had this before, but it tasted pretty good, especially with the raita (yogurt) sauce. I think I still prefer naan though. Chicken Vindaloo was a red watery "curry" with potato, it had a acidic taste to it. Chicken momo was more like an appetizer - steamed dumplings. It was very very soggy and was not like those in the pictures nor the ones described by Michelin's guide. Pretty dissapointed. Naan!! ahh they have amazing naan. It is super super soft, doughy, chewy - everything you would expect of good quality naan. We preferred the garlic ones than plain. Overall, I LOVED this meal. I will sure be back in the next few weeks, and try out some other dishes - of course also reordering Chicken Tikka Masala and Garlic Naan. I have been back to Aangan many times since I wrote my earlier review and I think it is the best South Asian food in the area. Apart from the moms, I would also recommend the chicken choila for lovers of flavorful but hot, spicy food. The royal paneer is also to die for. Their samosas are very tasty.
