Hubby and I decided to try another Indian food place and this one caught our eye. The service was great. We ordered paneer pakoda for an appetizer and it came with two sauces, both very good and flavorful. Hubby ordered a lassi and he really enjoyed that as well. For the main course we got birayani rice along with chicken curry and chicken shahi korma and two naans (butter and cheese). The chicken shahi korma was amazing as was the rice and naans. The chicken curry was okay, not horrible, but definitely not the best we've had as it was a little watered down. Overall we enjoyed our experience and if we were back in the area we would probably go to this location again. There was plenty of food that we were able to take some home to enjoy for lunch the following day. read more

I go to other Indian restaurants and then immediately hate myself / am disappointed in all of my life decisions because I remember I could have gone to Aangan. The best damn Indian / Nepalese restaurant... maybe ever. Try everything. The naan is that perfect mix of toasty crunch / soft. And their tikka masala and saag paneer... amazing. Amazing food! I'm from Sacramento and my boyfriend played a show next store at the Ivy Room. They close at 10 and it was cutting it close to closing time (which is terrible on us for ordering so late) but they still took our order and gave us a delicious fresh vegetarian meal. One of the Vik's guys started his own place, and it is so good! It has been a long time since I've been wow-ed by Indian cuisine so that is saying something. The place has this fantastic aroma that you can smell from a block away. Plus they have really great sauces for everything. read more

Disappointing. I was skeptical about trying this place because of the many rave reviews from One Review Yelpers. My boys and I went here recently. H had the Masala Dosa. The dosa was thick and limp--not crispy at all The potato filling was okay. The dipping sauces were kind of strange. Not bad, just different from what we're use too. The samosas were not flaky as described in other reviews. The shell was a little bit tough. The potato filling was over spiced with some dark substance. My chicken combo plate : The chicken chunks were on the large size; the sauce was okay. The dal was tasty. The rice was fine. The raita was strangely sweet. The combo came with a small piece of papadam, a tiny piece of naan which resembled and tasted like a small flour tortilla (nothing like the photos) The onion naan was good. The red onions made it flavorful. P ordered chicken momos, which he liked. I had a small bite with the sauce which also seemed a little strange. The service was okay. Maybe the problem is that we are used to different tasting Indian and Nepalese food. The spices seemed very different. The ambiance was nice. I haven't been to this location since it was a Thai restaurant. The mural on the side wall is very soothing. Agree with Rinky. I think I should have paid better attention. First, I thought it was Indo-Chinese food, then I thought the name of the restaurant was Rangoon. All wrong. It serves Indo-Nepalese, but a perusal of the menu seemed more Indian - we ordered the goat curry, okra (which had rough bits in it), and garlic naan (a little too crispy burnt for my taste). Laura and I met here for lunch today. We over ordered and ended up w/ leftovers. We ordered chicken momos and garlic naan to share. Laura ordered Chicken Tikka Masala and I ordered Lamb Palak, both spiced mild/medium and chai to drink. We also shared an order of rice. The momos, shaped like potstickers, arrived after the rest of the food so I had just one, and it was delicious. We shared bites of each other's dishes and both were flavorful. The lamb was tender and the accompanying spinach was fresh and green. It was different from lamb saag where the spinach is cooked down and mixed w/ different seasonings. I like them both. The chicken was very tender and the sauce was tasty. I don't ordinarily order it, so I have nothing to compare it to, but it was good. Service was friendly and unobtrusive. My chai was refilled. The decor is very spare. Laura and I were here a few years ago when it was a Thai restaurant and Nina and I were here even longer ago when it was a Persian one. I really wanted to like this place, especially after once having similar cuisine at nearby Everest up on Solano. Also, their website looked really good. However, I think I was in at a particularly off day when I dined here recently. We came during "tea" (what my husband had to describe to me as being the meal time that is too late for lunch and too early for supper). I couldn't remember if the lot next to the restaurant was shared with BevMo, or if only BevMo customers are allowed to park there. At any rate, we found immediate parking on Solano. The place's ambiance is very inviting. Tall ceilings. Gorgeous paintings of presumably a village square with the Himalayans (?) as a backdrop. Brick wall on one end. Most importantly, the tables didn't look crowded. It probably seats about 48. Tables are a mixture of 4- and 2-seaters. There's a patio in the back, but from my vantage point, I didn't notice any seating. I think there was some sort of cooking area, which didn't look like it had been used at all. I always order a sweet drink, especially if I expect some sort of spiciness. Their mango lassi was one of the best I've ever had. Dinner sounded promising at this point. Husband ordered the fish curry. They were out of brown rice, so he settled on white. He was going to order extra rice, but settled on the 75 cent chapatti. I was going to order lamb, but I noticed they had goat. I ordered the goat platter, instead. The fish arrived in a small metal dish. And the generous rice was served in its own plate. My husband was about to pour the entire contents of the curry onto the rice, but the waitress came by and gave him an even bigger plate to transfer everything. He thought that the rice was flavorless and the fish a bit "hotter" (not spicier) than he expected. And he got his one chapatti. It was at this point that I remembered that at some restaurants, you usually get several pieces of naan with your meal. Perhaps this would have been offered during dinner time; he was disappointed with his one piece, but wasn't about to complain for the 75 cents it cost him. For my platter, I received: --rice --goat curry --papadam (large, crispy flat bread / cracker) --chapatti (a round of soft flat bread), --dal (a bean soup) --raita (herbed yogurt side dish) --salad --achar (pickle) Sounds like a lot, but it wasn't. I kid you not: My "salad" consisted of one carrot slice. No dressing. I think the second string cooks were on hand or something. The achar was okay -- it was some unnamed salted vegetable. I love vinegar, so I was saddened that I didn't detect any vinegar on this. Perhaps preserved vegetable would be a more apt description. I received slightly more pickle than my single slice of undressed carrot. The rice was a big scoop, for which I was grateful. However, I think it was only flavored with cumin and ghee. When I attempt to make Indian/Pakistani-style rice at home, I at least jazz it up in addition to cumin, some bay leaf, some cloves, some peppercorns, and even a cinnamon stick. But if my own husband (who isn't much into how a food tastes) complains of blandness, then it must be that noticeable. The raita was a generous serving. Enough to quench any spice burning. But I had asked for my goat to be mild; it didn't need it. Dal was okay; I mention in almost every food review how much I don't eat beans. I barely touched this, but that's because of my personal thing against pulses. The goat was fatty enough for me. It was good, but not memorable. It was a tiny, fist-sized serving, and I have very small fists. I did have a piece of stray bone that I was glad I did not accidentally bite down on. I gave my chapatti to my husband, because I felt bad that he had just the one chapatti on his plate. The papadam was crispy and light, but had no taste. We are not the types to order appetizers; I'm sure if we had, we would have been a bit more satisfied. As it was, the food wasn't particularly high on our list of something to look forward to. I was working late and wanted to grab a bite to eat somewhere near my job. Naturally, I consulted Yelp! And Yelp did very well this time. I chose Aangan because it was open (it was 9:30 pm on a Friday) and nearby and Indian food sounded pretty good. It turned out to be amazing! After I eat here a few times, I might go ahead and promote Aangan to "The Best Indian Food I've Had In The East Bay", a position currently held by Vik's or Udupi Palace. I ordered the saag paneer and a garlic naan, and it was just really great. Saag can be a little bland sometimes, but it was really flavorful and thick and creamy here, and the naan was soft and fresh and everything was delicious! I can't speak for any of the other dishes yet, but I definitely plan to come back here (and bring my coworkers!) I was pretty much the only person at the restaurant at this time of night, so I spent some time speaking with the owner. (From other reviews, I gather that his name is Bishnu?) He was really friendly! He said the place is pretty much dead late at night and not very busy at lunch, but pretty crazy around 4-5. Also, I learned that he was the manager at Vik's Chaat House for 6 years before opening this place.. so if you like Vik's, definitely give Aangan a try. read more

I heard somewhere that this place had a reproduction tandoori chicken sandwich similar to the sadly missed Tandoori Chicken USA Restaurant in El Sobrante. So I had to go check it out, and to my delight they have come very close to one of my all-time favorite sandwiches. I talked with the owner and he explained how they had some customers ask him to try to make the sandwich and they liked it so much he put in on the menu. Right now they make it with chicken breast and he said when they get there larger tandoor oven they will be able to cook the whole bird like Tandoori Chicken USA used to do it. We came in expecting good Indian/Nepali food at Hamro Aangan, especially after reading positive reviews about the place. This is how we experienced it - 1. Service: Extremely slow. It took nearly 30 minutes to just get our appetizer plate. We had to send it back, and it came when our dinner was nearly over. 2. Food: Absolutely tasteless. The okra was very average. The chicken and veggie plates we also ordered were really tasteless, made in an awful red curry. 3. Pricing: Even the bill had a lot of errors on it. We asked for roti, we got naan. And we got charged 3 times the price of roti. Twice. The decor inside could be improved, the service definitely could be speeded up, and the quality of food needs a complete revamp. I will never return here, and certainly not recommend it to anyone looking for authentic Indian food. read more

Simply the best Indian restaurant I've been to in the East Bay. The food is as good as Vik's, with a much more enjoyable dining experience. The owner is some type of savant who will remember your name and what you eat if you come back... and you will come back. Listen to his recommendations too, he will steer you in the right direction. Don't understand the reviews who say that the food is bland... that's what happens when you order Indian food with "Mild" spice... they make it bland because that's what they think you want. After reading all the negative reviews, I feel the need to write something to defend this restaurant from all the hateful people out there. Also, I want to do my part to keep this restaurant in business forever because it is one of my favorite restaurants in the bay area. We eat here at least 3 times a month. Simply put, the food is Excellent; everything is cooked to perfection and is always fresh. We grabbed takeout for Valentines Day and REALLY REALLY liked it!!! We've driven by a million times but saw the restaurant was always empty. After reading the reviews on Yelp, we were optimistic and even more impressed once we ate the food. On the restaurant itself, I was surprised how beautiful the inside is. I wish they would take the Christmas lights out of the window.The paintings are gorgeous!!! When we got inside the owner immediately greeted us and we asked for some recommendations. He even offered us some chai tea as we waited. I really like the fact that it comes unsweetened so you can add your own sugar. Once we got home the food was still really hot. I was super happy that the food was not super greasy. I hate it when you have tasty curry and need a clean bathroom nearby. Not the case with this restaurant. The flavors were very fresh and unique. A lot of other restaurants' curries all taste the same. Not so for Hamro Aangan. Unique and delicious. We tried the Mixed vegetable pakoras. Which were delicious. They tasted fresh and the restaurant obviously changes their oil on a regular basis, which is always a plus. We also had the fish pakoras which were amazing. The fish was nice and tender and cooked to perfection. The chicken Masala was excellent in flavor. I only wish we would've ordered a second order of this. The Saag paneer was AMAZING. The cheese was so fresh and delicious. Totally like no other saag paneer I've ever tasted. The final dish we ordered was the lamb. It was a bit to gamey for me, but the curry itself was amazing! We loved this place and will definitely be back. I can only imagine how the food will be EVEN better fresh at the restaurant. It's so nice to see a great restaurant that's successful in Albany. I was looking for a good spot to get a bite before going bowling on a Saturday night. Though I'm Indian, I've never tried Nepalese food, so I thought this might be worth a shot -- it definitely was! We ordered some vegetarian momos, a masala dosa, and the vegetarian thali -- the menu really spans the subcontinent. All the food was really good and fresh-tasting. For once it didn't taste like I was eating wedding food (heavy, oily) but a home-cooked meal (don't tell my mom). There was so much food that we have at least one meal's worth of leftovers today. Indo- Nepalese Cuisine Our neighbors took us here the other night because they know how much we love Indian Food. The ambiance is very open and but lacked a personality. The one thing that was an eye sore was the covered up writing on the wall. It was our 1st time experiencing Nepal-Indian Cuisine. And we were glad they took us here. They did the ordering and surprisingly we really like all the dishes. To start, we had Chicken Momo's.. little dumplings.. they were quite tasty. We really enjoyed the Chicken Tiki Masala.. The sauce was different than the traditional curry sauce we were use to, it was like more pureed or something. Their Nan is terrific and the best I ever had. The Biyraani was delightful! By far the best thing on the menu! The wait staff and especially the Owner are so attentive. We felt like we were dining in their home with their generous hospitality. read more

Yum, I came here after my hike at Point Reyes and I was so hungry. I ended up ordering the bagdan bharta (eggplant), chicken tikka masala, rice, naan and Sev Batati Puri. The sev batata puri sounds similar to what my bf had in the past so we were hoping it was the same. Unfortunately, it wasn't exactly what he was looking for but it was still very good. The eggplant dish was okay but the chicken tikka masala was probably my favorite. The chicken was tender, warm and juicy. The service here was very good and I liked the decor of the place. uuuhhh DAMN!!! Someone had recently told me that a lot of Indian restaurants use prefab curry mixes. I didn't believe them until I went to Hamro Aangan and had the real thing. Or rather, it's not that I didn't believe them, it's just that I hadn't had the real thing in so long that I had forgotten what a difference it makes. Hamro Aangan is legit. The pakoras were delicious, like hush puppies, and the chutneys were really fresh. And the goat curry was 'BROKE DA MOUF!!!' because I can't think of a better expression than the one in Hawaii'an Pidgin to say it was amazing. My dining partner had a masala dosa, which I didn't try. She gave it thumbs up. We got there around 9pm on Saturday night and we were cheerfully greeted and served, even though we were the last folks in the place. The owners were cool and stopped by a couple times to chat about the food and the amazing mural on the wall that depicts Kathmandu. Oh yeah, and the mango lassi was like a delicious mango milkshake. Everything was just on. My heartiest recommendation. Recommendation to the owner: use some neon, or a light up sign. It's basically invisible from the street unless you already know where you're headed. We need you to stay in business so we can come back for years to come! read more

Probably the best "Indian" place I've been to in the Berkeley/Albany area. I live in India part time and have lived in Nepal, so I can say with good authority that the Nepalese influence here is pronounced. That's a good thing, the Nepalis are wonderful cooks with interesting and tasty twists on regional dishes. We brought a relative with us who loves Indian food (but tends to stick to familiar favorites) and she was completely blown away by the dishes we chose. It's been just long enough that I don't remember exactly the program, partly because every dish was excellent and delicious! This is definitely a place I will take people to again. I often don't eat Indian food when I'm out just because we get so much of it at home. But it's nice to have an authentic and really excellent restaurant in the neighborhood so that, when friends really want South Asian cooking, we can take them here. Definitely a "must try" place in Albany! Can I give them a sixth star please? We went to Hamro Aangan again this past weekend and I just finished the leftovers. The leftovers - lamb tikka masala and chicken saag - were some of the best food I've ever eaten in my life! Seriously, they were great on Saturday and they just rocked again for lunch! Berkeley may have as many Indian and Indo-Nepalese restaurants as London but Hamro Aangan is the only one that could thrive among the best of the world!! This is the best kept secret of the Berkeley Indian food scene. Spawned from Viks these passionate restauranteur has taken it up several notches! We had a table of 15 (mostly foodies) and had a Chefs selection off the menu. It truly was the most brilliantly nuanced and exciting Indian food that i have experienced anywhere. They also have a romantic urban patio that will be opened in the spring. Help this pedigreed ( spawned from Viks) gem of a place thrive! And don't let the understated facade of the place trick you into thinking you are at just another Indian restaurant. Go in a try it and take your friends. It is very special food. A BARGAIN. Will definitely go back here. The Nepali goat stew, Khashi Ko Masu, which I am not spelling right, was unctuous and yummy. There is a crunchy dried rice that I think is called Uttapam (?) which I think came as part of the appetizer Chicken Chwela, and I recommend that; spicy and yummy and you've probably never had it before. And if you don't like trying new things, as many have noted, there's great Chicken Tikka Masala here. And I like that there are lots of options available, spicy, or not, curry, stew, lots of lamb dishes, prawn dishes, a couple of "thali" options, and "pagodas" or "pogadas" which are like pakoras and very good. And wow, THE PISTACHIO ICE CREAM - YES! See, they make it there, by boiling down milk slowly and adding sugar and pistachio and other flavors. It was so very very good. Incredibly rich - there were like seven of us taking bites and the one serving of ice cream was plenty to make us all happy. Of course, we had just stuffed ourselves. Went on Friday night, with a large party, and everyone seemed to enjoy their food a lot. And again, such an economical restaurant! Ten adults, lots of food, including the ice cream, and appetizers, and it was $20 each including tax. And that was with one person, the birthday girl, me, not paying a dime. We had folks who can't eat dairy and others who can't eat wheat and others who are vegetarian. And then people who eat everything, like me. Everyone was happy; I should caution, however, this would be hard place to enjoy if you are a vegan. Hard, but not impossible. Service was a little off that night (slow) but restaurant very full. And we were a party of ten. Owner is attentive and charming and easy to dialogue with. And you really can park in the giant BevMo lot which is next door. Granted, I'm usually an "order Chicken Tikka Masala at every Indian place" kinda gal, but Aangan opened my eyes to the deliciousness of samosas and fish curry (ok, ok, still not too far into the deep end, but I'm weaning myself away from the sesame chicken of Indian food SLOWLY). Recommendations: butter naan, chicken tikka masala, fish curry, samosas. Space is usually not limited (no wait time), and service is friendly and timely. Parking is street-side along San Pablo, but usually I have no major issues finding a spot nearby. Also, be forewarned..."spicy" here actually means spicy. My wife and I tried this place last year for lunch and we enjoyed it but....We came in last night and were dissatisfied. The portions were TINY for the price...5 little thinly sliced paneer pakora for 7.99!!! Insane!!! The food also took 40 mins to reach our table and even then it didn't all come together. I normally like to eat my food with my naan. The naan came 10 minutes after the food...It was just a horrible experience all around. I don't think we will be back after this time. read more

The food here was delicious. I wasn't sure what to expect since it was a new restaurant and I've never had Nepalese food before. My boyfriend asked the waiter/owner what we should order and he suggested a number of dishes. Everything we had was amazing. Way beyond what we expected. The creamed spinach (saag paneer) was so good that I ate far more than I meant to. I thought the dal was full of flavor and the vegetable momo was like a taste of the Himalayas. At least I assume it was. Having never been to the Himalayas, I'll have to take their word for it, but whatever it tasted like, it was heavenly. The atmosphere was low key and comfortable, the staff was friendly and accommodating and the food was excellent and affordable. In the spirit of full disclosure, I will admit that they failed to refill my water glass, so I was a little parched for the second half of my meal. Even so, I would definitely recommend this restaurant to anyone. My only negative comment would be that the food was so good that I ate too much and am now uncomfortably full. read more

Hamro Aangan is definitely not a place to miss in Albany! I remember randomly running into this restaurant while I was yelping for good places to eat with a friend, and the reviews for Hamro were stellar. Some fellow Yelpers suggested that this restaurant was one of the best for Indian/Himalayan/Nepalese food. I knew I had to check it out. This restaurant is very accessible by both car and by bus because it is located neatly on San Pablo! I love this area because there's always going to be ample parking. It's a little bit past solano and so once you see that street, make sure to turn around. Right when you walk in, you are spammed with this nice aroma of spices that's so deliciously intoxicating. In my opinion, you know you are in an authentic restaurant when the aromas are overpowering. The menu is pretty simple. I feel like this restaurant is more on the Indian side than Himalayan/Nepalese because most of the items on the menu were standard Indian dishes (save for some Momos I think?). I debated on whether to try the supposedly delicious garlic naan, but I eventually settled for the lamb plate and my friends both got the chicken tiki masala. Lamb Plate This was actually a very satisfying meal! For around $12, you get two pieces of normal naan, raita, paneer, and the bean soup along with the lamb curry. In my opinion, the naan wasn't all that spectacular. I've been to establishments that have had crunchier and more flavorful pieces of naan and so this one here was a bit disappointing. However, the lamb curry itself made up for it. I asked for extra spicy and though it didn't meet my spice preferences, the curry definitely made the naan taste better (still soft though). The paneer and lamb were great compliments to the basmati rice. I felt like I got a quality meal for $12. Unfortunately, I put the yogurt to the last moment, and I couldn't finish it. All in all, I had a very good experience at Hamro. Although I wouldn't say that this is my favorite Indian restaurant of all time, I did enjoy my time here. My friend is a regular here and kept telling me about this place. I came twice within a week (once with a friend, the other time with family), and I agree that this is some good stuff. FOOD * Chicken Chwela- My favorite dish! An authentic Nepalese dish of spicy marinated chicken, beaten rice, and potatoes (w/ green sauce). Served cold, this dish is authentically unique. Will definitely order again. * Vegetable Thali- Combination of naan, rice, saag paneer, curry, dal, and raita. All fresh flavors that combine with each other nicely. * Chicken Momo- Basically steamed Asian dumplings with a creamy Nepalese sauce. The chicken inside the dumpling is fresh. * Naan (regular, garlic, and cheese)- Delicious! Garlic one is $2.50 and cheese one if $3.50. Think thick, homemade stuffed pizza crust without the toppings. * Sev Batata- Popular appetizer. A party bite of savory, sweet, and sour in your mouth all at once. * Chicken curry- Consistent, tasty. Comes on the chicken thali dish. Next time I'll order the tikki masala, another popular curry dish. * Eggplant curry- Standard. * Lamb vindaloo- One of the spicier dishes. I liked the other dishes more. The owners and servers are VERY friendly. Parking is easy in the nearby lot (shared with BevMo's). Always an available table. Prices are affordable at around ~$10/dish. Yelp led us here, and it did us right as always. We ordered chicken tikka masala, lamb curry thali, chicken biryani and garlic naan. There was another dish with chunks of delish grilled lamb, but I don't remember the name. Everything was so impossibly fragrant with spices and full of flavor. My kids absolutely inhaled the tikka masala. I ordered it non spicy, and it was the creamiest, most flavorful Tikka masala I've ever had. It went great with the fluffy garlic naan. The spicy chicken Biryani had big tender pieces of chicken in it, along with drumsticks, so no shortage of meat! If I had to pick a favorite dish, I would fail, because I loved every single one. I left with a huge belly stuffed to the brim, and ate the leftovers for dinner. For drinks we ordered the mango lassi, which was great. Thick and full of mango yumminess. I would've ordered dessert if we all had room but everyone ate too much. The service was an A+. Aangan is excellent. Great food, great service, great ambiance. Did I mention the food is great?? A couple of things: The goat curry is killer. The paneer tikka masala is the best I have ever tasted in my entire life. The owner is a very sweet man and anyone who complains about his interest in their table or their dining experience has a very different view than I do about what customer service should embody. I think it is top notch at Aangan. Also, not sure why someone would give this place 1 star, especially when they don't even SERVE eggplant! Maybe they were thinking of another place? Come for lunch when it's less busy. My whole family loves Aangan! read more

This is a wonderful friendly little place with great food. We have been back a few times and will return again. The food is spicy just the way my husband likes it. The Sev Batata Puri is a taste treat the best I've had of one of my favorite appetizers. I would suggest the Thali Platter and a Mango Lassi. I think we'll go back tonight. read more

I love Indian food, but the food here is just bad. I ordered a pick up for chicken with vegetables, daal, and rice, and got really small portions which also tasted bad. The chicken had just a couple of tiny pieces with hardly any vegetables and for what was supposed to be daal I got mainly water and had to fish for the few lentils at the bottom of the box. Hamro Aangan is my new favorite Indian spot. It was super yummy without seeming super unhealthy. I've been to yummy Indian restaurants where they load up on the cream and oil, but this place wasn't like that. I tried the vegetarian platter, which came with a nice sample of dishes including some rice and naan. I'm not sure if it always comes with it or if I just got luck, but I got one of my favorite dishes in the platter, saag paneer! mmmMmmm! I love me some cheese! On top of that, there was another vegetable dish, some dahl, a yogurt dish in case your food gets too spicy for you to handle, and that thin cracker that I can never seem to remember the name of... It was a nice portion size for the money, and I was HUNgry! The chai was delicious as well. My only suggestion is that they turn down the volume on their phone ringer, it's pretty distracting. If it's carryout orders, maybe consider moving the phone to the back somewhere. I just want to concentrate on the flavors of my food and relax with my chai. read more

I've driven past this place WAY too long. The description outside says, "Indo - Nepalese." I never figured that translated to Indian, shame on me! It's now my favorite local Indian restaurant. After moving from Berkeley to El Cerrito, I'd been hoping to find good Indian food a bit closer to home - there it was, thank you Yelp! Really nicely decorated & clean, very friendly staff. When we arrived about 5:15, it was less than 1/4 full. Within 45 minutes, every seat was taken & people were waiting by the door. Great Chicken Tikka Masala, vindaloo & potato/cauliflower. Excellent naan, also - the food tasted fantastic! Prices were moderate & they don't skimp on the servings. We'll definitely come back. read more

My Lamb Korma didn't have a lot of seasoning. It reminded of my feeble attempts at making Indian food at home. Salt helped a tiny bit, but the delicious spices that make Indian food truly Indian were nowhere to be found. The chicken dumplings were OK, but nothing spectacular. Same with the garlic naan, that although tasty proved quite difficult to digest gently. The staff was very solicitous, but they did bring the bill before we had finished eating. That felt a bit rushed, and the restaurant was half empty. I know there are better Indian choices in the area, so unless they improve their cuisine, move along. read more

Let me tell you about this place, my friends. I am the generic white girl who orders the generic dishes (chicken tikka masala), but let me tell you there is nothing generic about the flavor! So rich and amazing, this is our go-to spot. I've asked on several occasions for help picking out a vegetable dish and have never been disappointed. So here's my pro-tip. As a white girl going into restaurants whenever they ask me how I want my dishes and I reply spicy, I get medium to little spice as they take pity on me. Let me tell you, this place, if you say spicy, you better mean it. It was so good, but I had tears rolling down my face for certain. One of the owners got excited when I picked up my to-go order and said next time I should try the "lava hot." I wish so badly I could, but I don't think I'm there yet. I've wanted to try this place for a while...so maybe because I waited so long my expectations were set too high so it was easier to be disappointing? Food: 1) Fish curry: Too runny. I thought the flavor was ok, the fish tasted pretty fresh and good, but the curry consistency was definitely not there. It was almost like colored water...I mean, don't get me wrong, it still tasted good but it was just way too runny. 2) Chicken Tikka Masala: This is my FAVORITE Indian Curry dish and I order it at every Indian place so I get a baseline comparison dish. I felt like this curry was pretty good. Consistency was creamy and smooth, like curry should be, color was on the spot, and the chicken was nice and tender. I can't really put my finger on it, but I feel like the taste of this curry could have been a little better. I can't say what it was missing exactly, but I know I've definitely had better. 3) Vegetable momo: Looked and tasted exactly like what a Chinese vegetable dumpling. A little on the salty side, but the dip that it came with was pretty flavorful and complimented the dumplings pretty well. 4) Garlic Naan: pretty well seasoned and flavored. I liked the soft chewy center and the crispier garlicy outer crust. 5) Roti: The roti here tasted WAY better than roti at other places. The roti here was slathered in some butter, so that helped the roti retain some moisture. Other places make the roti way too dry and flavorless. Thumbs up on the roti! :) Service: Very friendly and welcoming. The food came pretty fast. They even checked on us several times and refilled our water as needed. Great service. Ambiance: Not too big, not too small, just the right size to hold a sizable dinner crowd. There are Christmas lights lining the outside windows which give it a more vibrant feel. I didn't really get too much of an Indian vibe from the decor of this place, but then again, this place wasn't really that decked out either. Very down and earth, kinda regular restaurant feel. Price: Reasonable for Indian food. The bill came to be about $30 for everything. Overall: I think this is one of those places that I'm gonna have to say..."really wanted to try it, tried it, and now I'm moving on..." It's worth trying, but not returning. read more
