Aaron's/Rat City Bikes was the only one that was able to get my bike in, because I have a weird framed E bike other shops in the area did not want to work on it but they did and got the work done efficiently. They replaced both my front and back tires, fixed my hydraulic breaks, and taught me a few things as well. I called to schedule an appoint on Fri (02/21/20) and they told me to drop my bike off Tue (02/25/20) and will receive it the next following day Wednesday (they took my name/phone down is what they said). I came in Tuesday, told them about my appointment and they said they never heard from me and I'm not inside their database. So, please make sure they write you down for the appointment! Thank you Mike & Aaron for a wonderful service, they were able to fix my brakes the day I came in (Tuesday) and didn't have to wait another day! Took my bike in to get the tires and pedals switched out. It also turns out that there was a manufacturing recall for the crank on my bike from 1995!! Aaron had the parts on hand and switched it out no problem. This guy knows what he's doing and it was fascinating watching him work through my bike so seamlessly. As a beginner rider it was my first time in the shop and I was a little nervous because my knowledge about bike mechanics is the little to none. Aaron's explanations as to what he was doing while working on the bike helped give me a better understanding of my bike's mechanics and had me feeling excited to go on a ride as soon as I walked out of there. When my wife and I entered and the clerk approached, I asked him kindly to put on a mask. He adamantly refused, instead offering to show me his antibody test. Well, an antibody test won't keep you from spreading the Delta variant. So we turned around and left, and as we did, he kept insisting that it was impossible for him to catch or spread COVID-19. This is incorrect. I wrote a negative Facebook review. He replied to me by mischaracterizing the situation. He said I approached him, when it was actually the other way around. He claimed to have a lung condition that prevents him from wearing a mask. Well, if that were true, why didn't he lead with that and also keep his distance? In response on Facebook, I refuted his gaslighting, but then he deleted my clarifying posts, which ensured that he would get the last word. That's why I'm posting this here now. We immediately found another bike shop that has better service and more professional staff. And, yes, they follow the statewide mask mandate. Look, I'm sick of wearing masks, too. But treating your customers this way just isn't good enough. UPDATE, 9/14/21: He went on to send me several Facebook messages personally; I did not reply because I didn't want to give him access to my full Facebook profile. He appealed to our shared Christianity, saying, "Please forgive me as Jesus would." This sounded for a moment like an admission of guilt, and I tried to figure out whether I was ready to forgive yet and then how best to make my forgiveness known. I went back and discovered that my original Facebook review had mysteriously disappeared. And then he added another message: "You owe me a public apology. As Jesus would recommend." Nope, sounds like he's still trying to get out of all consequences. How does one forgive someone who's still demanding that you acquiesce to his demands? For now, this Yelp review stands. read more

This shop is cool! Filled with tons of parts, stickers, lights, a cat and cool hats.. Even a vending machine of tire tubes and fun out front, if they are closed and you need em.. A friendly shop of folks that know what they are doing and have a passion for bikes!! I felt very comfortable instantly with having anyone there look over my bike. Greg gave me a bike fit and explained all the measurements. The price was great, around $45 bucks, this is a better deal than most. They even gave me a copy for my records so I can come back and get more bike fits whenever needed for only $10 now. If you buy/build a bike from them, fits are usually free and they feel should be included-- wow no kidding huh? This is not the case at most shops I have found or bought bikes from, and is why I needed A fit.. so this was how I found this place! read more

Took a used 30 year old bike here to get a quote on repairs. They quoted me $475.00. Ah, no thanks! Took my bike to Alki Bike & Board and they quoted me $210.00. They went a little "high" just in case they ran over on cost. I love how these reviews are either 1-star or 5-star. The 1-star reviews are all basically the same: "Nobody kissed up to me like at Nordstrom. Wah!" All you one-star whiners, ask yourself how many other bike shops only *fix* bikes instead of using their service departments to sell new bikes? Yes, Aaron might seem a bit imperious at first, like an old male doctor, but that's because he knows so much more than you about bicycles. Do you argue with your pharmacist about drugs? OK then. Yes, he has upsold me some things I didn't come in for, and Strictly BMW did a front-end rebuild on my 2003 325ci when all I came in for was a brake job, but the car handles so much better now, and my doctor found some cancer when I just went in for a check-up, and the cancer treatment cost more. So if Aaron tries to upsell you, you should listen. You're free to say "no thanks". I say it all the time. I find his directness refreshing and his work top-notch. Example: I'm a 195-pound bike commuter for 40+ years in hilly potholed Seattle. Wheels going out of true were as regular for me as buying new calendars. Aaron said he could build strong ones. I'm at four years and counting. Example 2: A crash wiped out my weird yellow front fender. Aaron says they don't make those weird yellow fenders anymore, but maybe Ebay has them. Does he stop there? No. He finds them on Ebay and emails me the link. He notices my old no-longer-made Look pedals are worn out, so he finds decent used replacement Look pedals on Ebay for $10 and emails me *that* link. He didn't say my pedals were crap and try to sell me new ones, or if he did I ignored him. Point being, he went above and beyond to help a biker out. You think Gregg's Greenlake would do this? Aaron knows his shit. He goes the extra mile. He's way into bikes. He's not into being obsequious. Be happy you found a guru and quit complaining about the tone. Even if you don't like the guy (and I think you're wrong not to), what's ten minutes in his shop compared to having everything done the best it can be? read more

I have been using my bike on a trainer during the pandemic. The gear shifter stopped working last week. Eek! I brought the bike in to Aaron's and within a few minutes he had the problem diagnosed. I had to order a part, but Aaron stored the bike at the shop and called me when it came in. That bike has been my lifeline for getting daily exercise and keeping my sanity during this time when Spin Class isn't available. I really appreciate that the shop took care of me so quickly. The price came in less than the estimate, too. Another thing I loved about this place was that Aaron had really great social distancing protocols. I felt totally safe going into the shop and didn't have to make any of my own awkward decisions (hand sanitizer? Where do I stand? What do I do if other customers get too close,? etc) -it was all very clearly communicated and taken seriously by the shop. Not just a nod to the Social Distancing protocols like other places I've been to. Hopefully, the pandemic will not be a recurring thing, but it made me feel good to know that their health and mine were a priority. I will definitely come here again. read more

My experience here today was entirely positive. Aaron spent 1.5 hours on my newish ebike, focused exclusively on it despite a worrisome loss of data on his store computer. He let me look on and helped me understand what he was doing. In that time: -He succeeded in easing the shifting of my Rohloff hub, so that it is less stiff, there is some play in the shifting and I can feel detents as I change gears. -He suggested changing the oil in the hub (which has 700 miles on it) and then did so quickly and efficiently. -He told me about numerous improvements I could make if I want to, and how much they would cost. There was no pressure -- only ideas. -He suggested that mud flaps would help protect the frame and engine on my ebike and custom-made a pair for me, then riveted them onto my fenders. All this for $80! I was expecting to pay twice that, and I would have been happy to do so. Aaron was pleasant, interesting, interested, resourceful and generous with this time. So I don't understand the negative reviews here. They certainly don't reflect my experience. I will be coming back here whenever I require expert service. I recommend this place highly. read more

Good selection and GREAT customer Service. Aaron has fixed stuff I didn't know was about to break, has an old schrod peddle swedging tool when I came in holding the pedal in one hand and the bike in the other, and made triple sure that the fenders I got for my 1979 loaner bike were mounted exactly. Greg saved a bike trip to Vashion by opening the shop like 30 minutes early for us on our way to the ferry. Aaron's gets 90% of my considerable seattle bike business. I've been thinking a lot about cyclists' role in disaster recovery; about how when everything is shut down bicycles are one of the only reliable ways to move people, food, and emergency supplies. It's a reminder that bike shops should be considered essential when it comes to deciding which business should remain open during emergencies, and as I paused to think about this I realized I had not expressed gratitude to Aaron's Bicycle Repair. I use my bike for commuting to/from work almost every day and for everything else on weekends, so when it was involved in an accident earlier this year and needed a lot of work I couldn't afford I reached out to Aaron to schedule a time for me to bring it in and get an estimate. Being without a bike even for a day has a huge impact on me. He understood my situation and made time for me that same day. I'd been to the shop before a couple times and had good experiences. (I had my bike completely overhauled about 7 months prior by Aaron and it's been such a sweet ride ever since!) Aaron welcomed me in, loaded my bike onto his workstand right away, and began taking detailed notes. We talked about what he could do right then to make it rideable (replace bent rims, replace tires, etc) and I was relieved to be able to ride it home the same night! He sent me a very fair estimate for my claim, and when I finally received my claim check he made it easy to make an appointment to have the work done. Some folks here have mentioned that he has an attitude and I've never experienced that. He's serious about his work and he's a master mechanic -- he doesn't have the usual "bike jock" vibe I've encountered elsewhere but frankly I find bike jock types imperious and overbearing. Most of us who use our bikes for transportation already understand the potential of bicycles during disasters. Like a go-bag, regular bike tune-ups should be part of emergency preparedness. Aaron and his team do stellar work and I'm very thankful to have Aaron's Bicycle Repair in my community. There are some good guys working here, and that's the only reason it gets a star. But I'll never go back. The owner is a prick. The owner has screwed me twice. I dropped in for something I thought was serious while on a ride, and he let me know it was no big deal. He tightened a bolt. 30 seconds. Then he insisted on charging me THREE DOLLARS. You know what? Do one simple thing like that for free, and I'll come back for the expensive stuff. (Why charge three bucks for anything? Three bucks won't buy you a latte... but it sure will piss a person off.) The second time was I went in for a bike computer... without my bike. I told him exactly what I had. The owner then told me the less expensive items wouldn't work, and he talked me up from the $29 item to the $69 item. I got home and found out it wouldn't work on my bike. I took it back the very next day, and he said it was exchange only. I hadn't even unboxed the thing - I just read the directions when I got home to find out it was wrong. (I had a recumbent bike at the time, and he assured me it would be fine.) Stupid stuff. But the stuff that makes a business suck. I go to West Seattle Bike and Board now - skate rats with attitude, but they get stuff done, and they've been honest with me. (Actually now I go to Alpine Hut over at Interbay. If you enjoy commuter bike snobbery, this is the place for you! In addition, if you enjoy being yelled at and having the owner throw you out of his bike shop, this could be your favorite shop if you play your cards right. I'm all for supporting my local bike shop. So much so I consider several shops to be my local shop. I'm also a big fan of bike snobbery. It's one of my hobbies. But the snobbery here is the angry kind instead of the fun kind. I understand that some men get in touch with their anger late in life, and then careen through a late-bloomed and fermented adolescence where they see something of The Man everywhere, out to Get Them. Men experiencing this should not run their own businesses in which they rely on customer good will to survive. It would be hard to imagine a business worse than a small bike shop for men such as these. Once I bought a helmet from Aaron. Unfortunately the first time using it I found the adjustment system was stripped and wouldn't tighten. Needing a replacement I bought another when I was at another shop, and a few days later tried returning the broken one to Aaron's. "Let me see that, maybe I can fix it," said Aaron, taking the helmet from my hands. "Oh, it's stripped. Well, we can give you a replacement." "I already bought another one," I said, "and would like a refund." "We can give you store credit." "I don't want store credit. I want a refund." At this point I received a lecture from Aaron about what he calls the "Nordstromization of America." The way he saw it, I should have waited until it was convenient for me to pop back 'round to his shop to discuss this like gentlemen before I rushed out to another (local) business to find a working helmet. I insisted I wanted a refund, and that's when Aaron shoved the helmet back at me and told me to get out of his shop. Stunned, I refused to leave without the return of my thirty-seven dollars plus tax. I then endured a tirade in which I was told I am what's wrong with America, that I don't understand the partnership that exists between customer and business owner, and a few more times to get out of his shop. Mind you there were other customers in the shop. Finally I was allowed my refund and told to speak to another employee for my money. When I got to the register she told me she could give me store credit. Sweet mother of the Monty Python Dead Parrot Sketch. She had to go speak with Aaron again and when she returned told me she would have to write me a check and asked if that would be okay. The check cleared, in case you're wondering. In any case, Aaron's shop has good people working for him and stocks nice gear. A shame since I resist shopping there because I don't like rewarding bad behavior. read more

Definitely not the place to go if you're looking for a large selection of bikes and customer service. Is it really necessary to be rude to patrons? Unless you're a bike guru this is NOT the shop to go. And the retail items in the shop looks like they are marked up about 300%. I understand small bike shops are not big Walmart's and Costco's but seriously though... I don't frequent local bike shops to be patronized... I don't mind paying a little more for quality customer service. I didn't get it here. I'd rather make the trip to another bike shop for help the next time I need anything to do with my bike. read more

I've been going to Aaron's for about 2 years now. I'm not his typical client being a "bike racer" type but I love the vibe of the shop. His mechanical work is top notch the the guys who work there take pride in there work. No, he is not the cheapest but you get what you pay for and I am A-O-K with that. The last think I want is a wheel failing when I'm flying down the bumpy hills of west seattle! People need to know that he is primarily about service and about selling stuff that works, not the latest and greatest. He actually convinced me to revamp my wife's 1969 cruiser rather than buy a fancy new "retro" cruiser that he actually sells in his shop. They ALWAYS have the basics in stock for repair (cables, pads, spacers, etc) and usually in multiple colors even! Excellent selection of Brooks saddles too. To some reviewers that are complaining about him saying things need to get replaced, they don't understand the liability that ALL bike shops face. If they let you out the door after working on something and it isn't safe it could come back on them. Welcome to the world we now live in. If you are looking for super techie race bike carbon whatever...this is not your store (go to Herriott Sports!) If you want rock solid FAST service and staff that know what they are doing, like fixing 3 speed hubs or getting your 1980's 10 speed back in running condition this is a great place to go. read more

I was looking for some particular small item for a friend who lives in NY. This is one of the only 2 bike shops in Seattle area that claims to carry the product. I had a really bad experience at the other place that didn't have any so finally tried this one. The guy helping us was GREAT. My girlfriend was with me and thinking of getting in to riding. He answered many of her questions; was not trying to high-pressure sales us or talk us in to anything we didn't want. I got a good feeling from the place and will likely go back for a bigger items in the future. read more

Was told on the phone to bring my bike into the shop for an estimate on a tune-up. I brought it in and the unfriendly mechanic put it on the rack and said that I had a problem that needed immediate attention that he could fix right now for 80.00. I told him I'd like to get a second opinion and he got testy and said "OK that'll be 10.00 for the diagnosis". I paid it and left. Took my bike to another shop and they found no problem and said all I needed was a standard tune-up, which I scheduled with them for the following week. read more

My favorite Seattle bike shop. The only place to go if you have internally geared hubs -- they are experts. They do high-quality work on the spot, quickly, and for a much too reasonable price. They never try to sell you work or stuff that you don't need. In fact they will talk you out of buying stuff you don't need. The shop is incredibly well stocked. They probably have what they need to fix your bike. It is very neat and organized. You know that feeling when you take your bike to a shop and the work done is so pathetic that you would have done a better job yourself and you know that you are a crap bike mechanic? That never happens here. Ever. Just go to Aaron's. If you do know more than these guys, you should probably do the work yourself. I would be disappointed if I had traveled a long way only to arrive at lunch time. And if your phone was dead and you had no way of knowing in advance, well, that sucks. But the hours are very clearly listed many, many places. It's not a hospital and you are not about to die. Everyone who works has a right to a lunch hour. Get over it. read more

I will be totally honest in my review that this is not the cheapest place to get your bike worked on. Their markup is steeper than their competitors in the area, and likely above what you would pay in Seattle proper. You get what you pay for. Plain and simple. If your hub is making crazy noises, or your shifters don't shift anymore, etc. etc. these are the people you want taking care of your bike. From tip to tail, these guys know their stuff. From problems I've had with my bike recently, this is the only shop that has fixed any and all problems the FIRST time. Other shops in the area seem okay with the policy of having customers bringing their bike back over and over until they finally get it right. I surely don't have time for that. Quick example: I was having problems with my new bike shifting like crap, returned to the shop where I purchased it 10+ times where every tech in the shop (to include the shop owner) attempted to fix my bike. Almost like clockwork, within 10 miles of the "repair" the shifters would fail again. Aaron's diagnosed the problem and recommended Alivio shifters, and Aaron personally installed them. 150-200 miles later the shifters still work perfectly. Not a hiccup, not one. Please don't be thrown off by the negative reviews on this site, those people sound like typical me-first-now-and I want it for free people that can't see paying a little more to have their bike fixed right, the first time. Check them out, pet their shop cats (Presta and Schrader), get your bike fixed or upgraded by their very talented techs, and you will surely want to join me in thanking them for another job done right, the first time. read more

I too had a great experience here. The place was super busy and I was looking for a back rack and front basket as well as some fenders (or whatever the things are that stop the water from getting all over you when you ride). At any rate they were very helpful with my bike and installed the items that I needed on the spot. I also scheduled a tune up for the following week which turned out to be great as well, my bike rides and shifts a lot smoother. Oh and the employee's were super helpful, gave me a bunch of bike maps for free thought that was great! Guided me on what type of lock to get without going hog wild on price. They are a little spendy, but the convenience out weighs the price tag for me. read more
