I've been to many Middle Eastern restaurants but let me be honest for once, if you being in carbondale and not going to this Yamani restaurant you have never ever eaten delicious food. Whatever for ordering I suggest you guys ordering Kabsah,Mandy,Fahsah,Lahsah,Ma3sop, Fatah and finally liver. I love to get takeout from this place. My favorite dishes are the vegetable stew and chicken haneez which is chicken that is slow cooked in rice with a spicy tomato salsa on the side. The banana dessert is also amazing. read more

Aban's kitchen has really great authentic Yemen food. I have been here many times and the service has always been very fast. There are many dishes to choose from but I would recommend the chicken agda or chicken shawarma to any first timers, both are great. read more

What a gem! Loved the hummus and Naan bread, both the chicken and lamb entrees that my friend and I shared were super flavorful. The aromas and subtle spices transported me to an exotic middle eastern gourmet wonderland. I have mixed feelings about this restaurant. We were visiting the area and Mediterranean is a favorite food genre... We were a party of 3 and arrived at 6:10 for dinner. We ordered beverages which never came until after our meal was served. Our meals themselves came after 45 minutes for one plate; the final 2 arrived 1 hour after we sat down (they were not busy). The 9 year old wanted a dish made with white rice. The white rice came but on the side (the meal was spiced rice mixed with chicken so why they didn't make the chicken WITH the white rice is beyond me). My dish (chicken mogulgul) was rather bland. The hummus and bread along with the Aden chi were all delicious. So... poor service, bland food overall and not the greatest experience. read more

Very unique dining experience. We sat at a traditional table (no "table") and had to remove our shoes before entering our seating area. The seating was comfortable cushions on the floor. There was a white plastic covering on the floor which we ate on like a picnic blanket. The soup starter was not good. I'm not sure what it was supposed to taste like but to me it tasted like water & cardboard. The lemon provided with the soup didn't help. The salad had an interesting dressing that was reminiscent of Thousand Island. My friend & I both ordered chicken dishes (one baked, one grilled). The waiter did inform us that the grilled chicken takes 35 mins. The bowl of vegetables was sort of like a beef stew without the meat. Basmati rice was a little flavorless. Bread was really good. Tea at the end was very nice. Customer service was very good. Overall, there is nothing like this unless you go to St Louis. I would recommend that Aban hosts explain how the meal works for folks that have never been there before as they are being seated. We didn't really know what to expect read more

My husband and I decided to try this place and greatly enjoyed our experience. We like to try food of different cultures and were excited to find an authentic middle eastern place in Carbondale. The staff was very friendly and helpful in selecting a dish and explaining the different dishes on the menu. We shared a lamb dish and a vegetable dipping dish that came with wonderful flat bread. The starter consisted of a broth curry soup, which was also very tasty. All the food was very flavorful, but not spicy hot. After the meal we were served some delicious sweetened middle eastern tea. This place has an amazing yemenian food but it depends on the times you go there, one time I went on a Friday with a friend of mine, the food was amazing, the lamb chops were cooked well, and everything was perfect. Then again I went when my parents came down to visit and the food wasn't that good, the lamb chops had a burn in it and the bread was burned and when my dad asked him why the bread was burned he gladly replaced it with a good one, but again the chops were less potion than the usual and had a burn taste and look on it! I recommend eating fuhsa there, fuhsa never fails to amaze me! ITS A MUST HAVE! They need to add appetizers to the their menu like hummus or any other kind of Arabic appetizers! read more

Great meal at Aban. Traditional seating (on cushions on the floor) or booths available. I would recommend the traditional to get the full experience. Ambiance is great - very cozy, but it doesn't hold a candle to how EXCELLENT the food is! Lamb and chicken were both cooked well and exquisitely seasoned. I love a meal that is interesting as well as delicious. Homemade bread, great rice, ended the meal with hot tea. This is a wonderful dining experience. read more

Wow! I've never had Yemeni cuisine before, but I'm definitely a fan now. I had the Lamb Haneez, roasted lamb shank with vegetables and yellow rice. Plus hummus and clay oven bread, freshly baked and HOT from the oven. Everything was delicious. My only complaints are that the food, except the bread, could have been a bit warmer and no iced tea. But those are not enough to keep me from coming back. Definitely give this place a try. They've been around for two years, right next to Mary Lou's. Don't know how I've missed it. read more

A must try in Carbondale. The chicken kabsa is my favorite! Be careful when telling them a spice level. I eat quite spicy food and 6/10 spice level was a bit too intense for me. Love the salsa that came with the kabsa. You also get unlimited soup and amazing tea with your meal. It also comes with a salad. What more could you want! There are multiple seating options, a traditional floor seating (sans shoes) for an authentic experience or you can choose to sit at the booths & tables. Our first trip to Aban was delightful. The owner/host met us warmly at the door and introduced us to the menu. We chose to sit in the room with on the floor seating. The ambiance in there was much cooler than in the regular dining area. The two dishes we ordered were wonderful and the service attentive. We enjoyed talking with Saleh which was an added bonus to a quieter evening. We are from out of state so don't know when we'll be back but hope others reading this review will be encouraged to try Aban. It was a fun experience. read more

This is the best restaurant in Carbondale Illinois! The food is fantastic. It is filling, yet not heavy. Its like the best kind of comfort food, but with amazing spices- not hot, but intriguing. I went here with my wife for her birthday and we had a wonderful time! The food was excellent (definitely the best Middle Eastern place in Carbondale), and the owner is super nice and eager to please his customers. I had never had Yemeni food before and the menu is a temporary one as they await the finished product (it has only been open three days so far), so he offered to bring us a mixed course of what he though we might like, and he was 100% correct. We had shakshuka (an egg dish mixed with tomatoes, onions, and spices), a dish of choppped lamb meat and liver cooked with onions and peppers, grilled lamb chops with rice and some kind of amazing stew with okra, and for dessert, a kind of banana bread pudding served with honey and cream. This is now my favorite restaurant in town, and I wish them nothing but success, so GO TRY IT!!! read more
