I have always worked on my own cars since age 13 including rebuilding engines. I do not hold 99% of mechanics in high regard, mostly due to so many vastly overcharging people and flat out pulling scams. Yes, there are some things that take time, education, and are difficult and deserving of high labor. I wouldn't rebuild a transmission and in the case with Abe's Auto, I was unwilling to try to change a turbo on a BMW without a lift on the streets of Chicago. I did a lot, I mean a lot, of due diligence, checking what was involved, hours required, parts etc.. I bought all the parts. Some mechanics wouldn't touch it because they want to jack up the parts prices, while most wanted a crazy amount for labor. Abe was BY FAR the most reasonable mechanic to deal with. He also saved the used parts so I could return the core and actually see that the parts were changed. It is EXTREMELY difficult to find a fair, reasonably priced, great mechanic, and I don't hesitate in highly recommending Abe's Auto. Thanks Abe!!! read more

This is the third time I used Abe's for my Volvo in about as many years. The first time, I stumbled on when I was looking for someone who was specifically focused on Volvos. (He does BMWs and other foreign cars, as well.) All three times, I found Abe to be thorough, and have a high sense of integrity. He withholds an assessment about the problem until he drives the car AND puts it on the rack to "look under the hood". He communicates every step of the way (though it's not always easy to get to him since he and only one other guy are doing the work). Prices are very reasonable. You might need to wait a day or two for an estimate but the time will be worth it. I was impressed he's also apprenticing his son, so I'm hoping Abe's will carry on for years to come! We had a late Friday car breakdown where we weren't sure if it was safe to continue driving or not. We suspected a blown head gasket as there was a lot of coolant and it was difficult to tell if oil was mixed in. Figured better safe than sorry so had it towed to Abe's. It understandably took a couple days for them to get to it but it ended up being a simple hose replacement. A new hose and a flush later we're back in business. I have an older BMW (2002 X5) and Abe showed me what the car's needs were and came up with a "Game Plan" and broke up the repairs in Phases, in the order of preference for the vehicle itself, not his pocketbook. In other words, he didn't say, lets do this bigger project first (where he can earn more labor hours) and I truly found that refreshing. HONEST ABE, fits this man's name & integrity. He said the vehicle "only" has 110K miles, and with proper repair and scheduled maintenance, the vehicle will easily run another 100K more miles. Abe and the team are the best in the business. I've been coming here for a number of years for everything between maintenance to repair and I've been meaning to write one stellar review. My new brakes [done by firestone] were improperly installed causing the pads to "drag". They wouldn't properly slow my car down and coming to a stop felt really rocky. I took the car to a performance shop [rated with over 300 5 star reviews on yelp] who insisted that nothing was wrong with the car. After dealing with clowns of the past, someone recommended Abe to me. Abe took the car for a spin and diagnosed it immediately. After doing a proper install, the car felt like a dream again. I also took my mom's Volkswagen Tiguan here for a brake change- which was also a 5 star experience. The guys knew the Tiguan utilized an electronic braking system and had the brake job done without a hiccup. We used the car the same day for a family road trip and the brakes functioned 100%. I would say what you pay is reflective of 100% quality work. Their prices aren't going to rob you blind like the dealer/"stealer"ships.
