I found this place through the stellar yelp reviews. Went here two years ago. My car's low brake fluid light came on and my brakes needed replacing so I decided to give them a call to get a quote. They quoted about 400ish for the front and 300ish for the rear. I decided to make an appointment and dropped off my car for them to check first. I decided to wait at the local Target and when they did call me back to confirm the services I wanted done, they quoted 400 for both the front and the rear. I was a little confused and mentioned my phone call and then they saw there was cheaper option for the rear brakes but said it was mostly the same so I okayed replacing the pads/rotors and a brake fluid flush. I asked if I could wait for same day service since this is kind of far from where I live so I appreciate them ordering the parts and replacing them same day. Prices seem fair. They seem like nice guys, Joe Jr I think was telling me about the graveyard of bones in my car and recommended getting something to deter rats from reenacting Ratatouille in my car engine. They seem passionate about cars. One of the mechanics was telling me about my tires. He didn't pressure me to purchase from them but really recommended I changed them before the first snowfall. They don't pressure you or up sell anything. After driving home though, I started hearing noises from the rear brakes. It sounds like a watermelon rolling around and knocking into my backseat. I lived with it for a few weeks and decided to give them a call back and they offered to take a look at them. They didn't find anything but smoothed out the rotors. Unfortunately the noise is still happening and I realized it's more noticeable when someone's sitting in the back seat so I guess it makes the rear brakes work harder. They said they were fine so I didn't do anything about it. Fast forward to today and now one of the rear brakes has started making a loud squeaking noise sometimes. I don't put too many miles on my car and a local mechanic confirmed my brake pads aren't worn and the rotors are fine. The only fix for getting rid of the noise is replacing the pads/rotors. Now I'm even more disappointed with the rear brakes with this new extra noise. read more

About 14 years ago I brought my 1997 Toyota Land Cruiser in after being told by the dealership that it needed a new engine, at a whopping cost of $10,000. Mind you, my truck only had 7,000 miles on it, so I was very distraught. A good friend recommended I get a second opinion from Joe Sr. his mechanic at Joe's Expert Auto. That was the best decision I could have made. Joe Sr. quickly diagnosed the problem, and instead of needing a new engine, he resolved the issue for just $2,400. With their continued white glove service my Land Cruiser has been running like a dream ever since. I lived in Chicago for about 5 years, and had Joe's as my auto-repair guys for the last 2 years. They have been nothing short of professional, transparent, and efficient as an auto-repair shop. I cannot recommend them enough to anyone searching for a trustworthy & reliable shop, whose best interest is the customer. A story that might help contextualize this: As I prepped to leave Chicago, I tried to take my car to Joe's for one final checkup. They were unfortunately all booked up, so I had to take my car to another shop. They found an issue with Left Front wheel Load Bearing hub, which was a part that Joe's serviced about 1 year ago. It would normally go under warranty coverage, but only if I had visited the same shop to service the part. I would've had to spend $600 out of pocket to repair this. When I explained the situation to Joe's, they put me in touch with their manager (Steve) who reached out to the warranty provider on their own to ensure that I did not have to pay out of pocket for either parts or labor to fix this part. Note that I didn't even take my car to them, and yet they helped me out here! Everyone at Joe's is absolutely incredible: Joe Jr, Gilbert, Jesse, and Steve, as well as all the mechanics too. Found Joe's from a post on Reddit. My car had been making a concerning noise and I brought it in on a Friday afternoon. Joe Jr. gave my car a quick test drive to hear the noise, let me know it didn't sound safe to drive, and asked me to leave it there so it could be the first car in on standby, but it might take until Thursday. Later that same day (!) I got a call back letting me know that a mechanic had some time to take a look and I needed new brakes, and they'd be able to get it wrapped up by Monday afternoon. They also swapped out a busted TPS sensor on my request as well. I could not be happier with my experience at Joe's Expert Auto. Everyone was friendly and knowledgeable, and I'm amazed that they were able to go from "ooh it's a Friday afternoon, won't be able to get to it" to "your car is totally fixed and you can pick it up" on Monday - and this shop isn't open on weekends, so they really squeezed me in to get my car safe and drivable again ASAP. I had issues with my car AC, which was getting to be unbearable in the Chicago summer. I took my car into the dealership where they discovered a "puncture" in the hose and quoted me $2000 to fix the issue. (I had the same issue back in October which they "fixed" for $1500). Joe Junior and his team fixed my car for $250. They did not see a puncture, but said that the tank was empty of Freon, which is probably why my car was blowing hot air! Throughout the whole process Joe Junior was very communicative, answered all my questions, and very respectful. It's been about 3 weeks and the AC is still running great! Will definitely come back for all my car issues. read more

I was outbound on the Kennedy, going to work. A clamp holding my exhaust together rotted out and the pipe fell to the ground. I found these guys on the internet bc they were close and opened at 8. They understandably didn't have the Audi part to replace it but they rigged it up so I could get to work and eventually my usual mechanic. Free of charge. Tremendous guys. Do NOT go here. They lie. They refused service on my car because I had to cancel some appointments with them. What a bunch of pretentious babies. I have a 2003 Lexus GX470 in excellent shape. I have been going to this place for years. Made some appointments for oil changes in the past 10 months or so. Had to cancel a couple because of last minute work issues. I always called to cancel. I was never a no-show. Finally brought my car into Joe's for an oil change and to repair a tire leak. They called me about an hour after I dropped it off and told me they were refusing service because they felt my frame was rusty and was making noise when they tried to lift my car. I asked them to show me a pic of what they were talking about. The kid showed me a photo on his phone that he took of an image that was on his computer monitor. It was just the bottom of some random car online. My car was just up in the air a week prior on another lift when my alternator was replaced. They lied. They just refused to service my car because I made some last minute cancellations. I grabbed my car from Joe's and brought it to another place down the road. They lifted my car, changed the oil and repaired my tire. Joe's Expert Auto lied. I'll never go back and I'll do my best to make sure no one I know ever goes there. Over the years, Joe's would tell me something needed to be repaired. I asked how much and they always had this massive price. I would just bring my car somewhere else and get it fixed for MUCH less. One time they said I needed like $600 in repairs. I bought the part myself at JULIO's AUTO PARTS ON DIVERSEY, brought it to GOMEZ WELDING and had my car fixed for $75 cash. read more

Get your car inspected at Joe's! Friendly and knowledgeable, plus free coffee! I was shopping for a used Subaru and took my now Outback to Joe's to get looked at... Luckily I did because it needed new brakes and the dealership at first were trying to play games but with my report in hand... finally they agreed to replace all our brakes with the purchase of the car! Brought my 2016 Subaru Crosstrek in with rear wheel squeaking. I spoke to Joe on the phone and he diagnosed the cause right away. We've been taking our cars to Joe's for years. They consistently have excellent and friendly customer service. The car is ready when they say it will be ready, and they call immediately when it's finished. With the inspection, they'll tell you what urgently needs fixing and what is less of a priority. Ripping off a woman during pandemic is just cruel. After charging me 2k for recommenced new brakes (even though these were replaced a year ago), new tires, and new power steering ($558.), I drive away only to hear a NEW very loud noise that sounds like the front wheel is about to snap. Are they inexperienced? or trying to increase dividends during a trying time for everyone. Fast talking salesman slash loooong storyteller Joe Jr. explained to me their shop had to take pay cuts the last month to stay alive. Attempting to gain additional and extra unwarranted service after completion from a woman out of work is more than cruel, it's criminal. Recommend staying far away from these criminal mechanics. (Mechanic Steve worked on the car, per receipt.) Unfortunate as they have many great reviews. I was hopeful to find a lifelong mechanic with them and tell everyone to go there. I don't think Joe is pricey at all. Took my Scion to the Toyota dealership and they wanted $2500 to replace 4 tires, change the oil, replace the belts, change fluids and a couple of other things. Took it to Joe and the total was $800-he even told me that two of the services the dealership wanted to do were unnecessary. Joe is honest, fair, and I trust him completely. Have recommended him to several of my friends. If you have a car take it to Joe's!!!! read more

Is it weird to want to send a Christmas card or bring cookies to you auto service shop? Or enjoy going in for repair work? But I do! I've been going to Joe's for about 7 years (or maybe more now) for service on my 15-year-old Subaru. This is a family-owned business with super-honest and high-quality service. They take time to explain everything and even show you the parts needing replacement or work. Their prices are fair and I never feel like I'm being talked into unnecessary work. I trust their judgement and the referrals they've made for work not in their "wheelhouse." I brought my car in for the first time last yr. & I really liked the service they offered then & now & even though I am a female that's not too well experienced in cars I still do ask a ton of questions & they're able to go into detail & answer all of them. I'm happy enough to travel out of my way to bring my car for any maintenance/oil changes/repairs because I leave knowing my car is in good hands. I will say one thing, when I recently went it to get my coolant topped I was asking one of the technicians about how to replace my windshield blades & the other technician there laughed. Maybe it was stupid to ask but the technician who I asked didn't have a problem answering any one of my concerns & even measured & recommended which blades I should purchase. I was looking for some good service for my car and my friend Sandry recommended this place. She knows this service for the least of 20years and she is more than happy with them. Knowing her, I decided to take my car here as well to do some random things and I need to fix the noise that was coming from the exhausted pipe. All was done the same day when we schedule what was amazing for me! Every time when I go there all of the employers are so nice and kind to me, especially Joe junior, who is always so positive and ready to explain everything in detail! And not just to me, I saw a few times how they treat each customer, if it is some issue with the car and they don't do that part, they always have a good recommendation. This review is a long time coming. I have been going to Joe's for many years now. I initially found the location because I worked just down the street at the time and had a car issue and couldn't afford a tow to "my guy." I trusted the last guy as he always seemed to know what was going on and I visited him often. When I first went to Joe's, I thought they were pricey at first but I knew my desperation came across and they spoke calmly and made sure I understood what was going on. I had my reservations thinking they were gonna take me for a ride as they were charging more than I was used to. Then I realized my car no longer had issues. As time went by, I realized I wasn't needing to go to "my guy" with any frequency, or at all. So I went back to Joe's when I had a different concern. They had me on file, asked how the work had turned out on my last issue (It had been at least 8 months since my first visit at this point) and they told me if anything happened with the work done previously, it was still under warranty. Never needed it however. And the issue I went in for the second time was fixed equally efficiently. I never looked back to the other guy and haven't needed to look around for another shop. If Joe or Joe Sr. tell me it needs to be done. I trust them. I've never had to go back for the same issue or related issue that I didn't cause. Not in almost 10 years. So I was surfing Yelp and came across their profile and thought I should express my gratitude in writing for a change. I highly recommend them. I do in person every chance I get. read more

My husband and I have been bringing our cars to Joe's for over a decade (5 cars and counting) and we'd never consider going anywhere else for mechanical work (they do not handle body work). The cars have been German and Japanese. This is important to note because while we know that imports are different from domestic cars, and therefore require special expertise, German and Japanese cars are in turn very different from each other. Joe has spent the money to both equip his shop appropriately for each kind of car, and staff his shop with experienced techs for both. This is many tens of thousands of dollars for each, just in equipment for diagnostics alone. Why? Because that's what you have to do to work on the cars that are driven today. You might think this level of service and expertise is going to cost you an arm and a leg, but surprisingly, it won't. A dirty little secret of the auto repair business is that many shops (especially dealerships) pay their technicians on commission based upon repair cost. Think about that for a minute. Joe pays his techs straight salary because he wants them to fix what is broken quickly and efficiently, and not to spend time trying to find things that aren't really wrong, but cost a lot. We have full confidence that if Joe's gives us a big number to fix something, that something is messed up. We know this, ironically, because of the money we have *not* spent there. On more than one occasion I've come back from the dealership because of recall or warranty work with their "recommendations," only to have Joe's say the work was not necessary or could wait another ten or fifteen thousand miles. And this is another key benefit of Joe's service: his recommendations are always made in the contexts of you and your vehicle. Do you want your car in tiptop shape always and to address any and all issues immediately? He will do it. But far more common for most of us is running a car on a budget. Safety? Absolutely and always. Keep it running? Yes. But the judgment calls---Do I fix this now or later, can this wait until spring, and most importantly, do I fix this or get rid of the car----are the times you most need a shop like Joe's. I took my Audi here after I had taken it to the Audi dealer to have my mirror fixed and they had told me that my motor mount was leaking fluid and gave me an estimate of $2,800 to replace it. Not trusting them I went to Joe's and asked them to check the entire car and to look at the motor mounts. They were honest and said that my car was in awesome shape and the motor mounts were completely fine. I no longer trust Audi dealership. read more

Been a customer for years now. The are really good, reliable and honest. I have an old rusty Ford Taurus 2006 with 150K miles on it. Always something major when the check engine light goes on. Leave it to the team at Joe's who give the car a thorough look and give you the facts. They use good parts and warranty their work. No excuses. I wish they were open on the weekend for a few hours but I understand. You can always go to them as a primary support service center or for a second opinion. I brought my car in to have the AC looked at after seeing all the great reviews here on Yelp. Not only did they live up to all that with their fast, courteous, and professional service, but they were even more amazing when I accidentally locked my 17 month old daughter in the car! I'd parked inside their garage, and had left her sitting in the back seat playing with the keys while I unloaded the stroller from the trunk. In that short amount of time she pushed the power lock button on the car key. First time mom (early in the morning with no coffee) mistake. Never again. Lucky for me, it turned out to be the best place it could've happened! Joe Sr, Joe Jr, and their staff wasted no time and got me back in the car to my baby in less than ten minutes. And they even gave her a matchbox car for all her troubles. Throughout the ordeal they treated us like family. It's always a good feeling to support a small family business. A true marker of whether an auto repair shop is good or bad is whether something else is wrong with your car after the repair. In this instance, I went in to get heating/cooling fan motor replaced. They fixed the initial problem and I was happily on my way in time for thanksgiving. That was two years. Toward the beginning of the spring (about 5 months later), I noticed a scraping sound. I took it into the dealer. After getting the brakes replaced (this shop didn't warn me the break pads were giving out, causing me to have to replace the rotors), the sound didn't go away. Thinking the dealer messed up on the diagnosis, I did a u-turn and demanded a fix. They took me under the car while it was on the lift and explained that they didn't need to touch anything under the hood...but that my under carriage wasn't bolted on at all!! Joe's shop left them off completely! The undercarriage eventually fell off, leaving my engine exposed to slush, salt, and other road muck. This triggered a sensor on my car, which in turn shut down abs, power steering, and other necessities. It also helped to degrade my drive belt, which decided to snap at the exact same time. If I weren't a diy kind of person, I probably would have had to take it in for $500+ worth of repairs, with more problems with time due to the missing undercarriage. My friend almost took her car here based on the Yelp reviews. I reminded her of their carelessness, and told her to avoid it at all costs. I say the same to anyone else looking for car repair - avoid, avoid, avoid!!!! -- After reading the shop's response, I'd caution other people to read the owner's response and to decide for themselves. I'd surely hate to deal with these people in person if that's their response to a customer online! I'll see if I can find my receipt still showing the work was done at this shop. I have photos of the issue from when it was found. As mentioned, the BOLTS weren't there. And, sure, I missed a phrase - engine guard ATTACHED to the undercarriage. But - hey - if you're reading this review and you want to bring your car to a shop where the guy fixing it is going to argue semantics, go ahead! Also, not super cool of them to post the make/model of my car (information that was on their "private" files) and to basically say it's the car's fault. read more

This place rocks!!!! what do they say, it's ideal to have a doctor, attorney, contractor, and mechanic in your family so you never get shafted? Well, i can honestly say that Joe's Auto Service takes care of the mechanic requirement. They are seriously the most honest, amazing people ever. I had taken my 9,300 mile car to Fletcher Jones downtown for a basic maintenance (aka expensive oil change and whatever else they can add on), and they of course told me that i needed $1400 of service that "wasnt covered under warranty". They said i have a leaks in my shocks, need to change my brake fluids and other fluids, and have to change the cabin air filter. I mean they gave me the hard sell and made me feel bad for not doing any of the "extra" service. I had taken my car to Joe's before and knew that I needed them to give me a second opinion. RESULT: Of course, nothing was needed but a change in cabin air filter ($30). 1. Yet again, i'm reminded that dealerships suck the big one. Shame on me. I know better. i succumbed in a moment of weakness because of convenience. never again. 2. Joe's is the real deal. read more

Normally I take my car to Haas Honda. They are super awesome, and they have done wonders for me and my car. But sometimes when I've called them, they are pretty busy, and can't take my car in right away. When that happens, I call up Joe's. I've had two things done at Joe's so far: fix my air conditioner, and replace my radiator. Last spring, some jerk backed into my car with what I am guessing was his/her trailer hitch and busted up the front grill of my car. They damaged one of the hoses on my AC (unbeknownst to me at the time) and all the fluid leaked out. I took the car to Joe's and they recharged my AC and put dye in it. It worked only briefly, and then I was back to getting hot air. I was very concerned. I know ACs are very expensive to replace, and I have reached the point with my cute little Civic where I have to decide whether to keep repairing it or get a new car. But I love it... But it's old... Anyway, I took the car back to Joe's, and they were able to tell from the dye where the leak was coming from in the AC and they fixed it. If memory serves correctly, the whole deal cost about $250 to get it fixed. They only charged me for recharging the AC once, even though they did it twice. That's nice. I just got back from having my car towed to them this morning because it started steaming last night and the temp gauge crept up way higher than usual. After checking out the car, they called me up and told me that there were some leaks in the radiator, the hoses were old and brittle, and the thermostat should probably be replaced because of the overheating. They billed me $557 for the whole job, and had it ready by 2pm. Google tells me that that is a little on the pricey side, but they use new parts, they have really well trained mechanics, and I know that the job is being done well. So I don't mind paying a little more for the peace of mind. (And in fairness, I should say that Haas is a little more pricey, too, for the same reasons.) Funny story: when I left my car at the shop and took the Western bus home, I got up to the gate at my home and realized that I left my house keys at Joe's. Today is the day of the first real snow in Chicago, I have a bad cold, and I groaned at the thought of hiking back up there and back home in the snow. I called them up, and one of Joe's sons actually drove the keys to me to save me the trip. A couple other things: Joe warned me that it is best to get my car inspected twice a year (Fall and Spring), so that problems like this can be headed off a bit, if possible. He said his shop does free inspections. The other thing he said that Yelpers may find interesting is that he doesn't pay his mechanics by commission--they are paid by the hour. So that hopefully keeps the mechanics honest and not trying to sell repairs that don't need to be done. Since I also love Haas, I am not sure who I should be most loyal to...but I am just so glad that I have two awesome mechanics in Chicago I can call upon! Thanks, guys! read more
