Greeted warmly as usual after a long day of work - hadn't eaten all day and was looking forward to one of our favorite spots for dinner. I asked our waitperson if I could get a black and blue salad made with chicken instead of steak. It was a yes or no question, but they decided to ask me if I wanted the Caesar salad instead. I explained that I wanted the exact salad as the black and blue, all I wanted was to substitute grilled chicken. I was then told that I could get the grilled chicken salad instead and I explained my dietary restrictions to no avail. She explained how hard my order would be e to explain to the kitchen, so I told her to just bring me the black and blue as is. I asked a simple question and it was turned into such a huge confusing mess that I just at that point wanted something to eat. They then said, " I'll get you some chicken" I explained that I'd like the salad as it comes on the menu but she walked away. What I was served was a salad but with the oldest, driest, coldest piece of chicken I think they could muster. I honestly don't know how old it was or where they dug it out from, but it couldn't even be cut with my husband's steak knife. As I was absolutely at my wits end with the entire experience and beyond hungry, I ate what I could and we left. In all of our years of driving to Abe's and recommending it to others, this was obviously such a deliberate act as no one I know has ever gotten terrible food like this piece of chicken. I am so sad and disappointed, plan to never return and will definitely discontinue my recommendations. For those of you with doubts- I was raised in the restaurant business - this was pure customer sabotage and about the most frustrating, dumbest exchange I have ever had with a server. I was beyond patient and polite and the entire exchange was so bad it was bizarre. I hope y'all do better in the future but you just lost us as loyal patrons. read more

Ah. May. Zing. !! We drove to Mechanicsburg to pick something up and by the time we arrived it was almost dinner time so we thought we'd try out luck on this place. (They only option in town) well, I'm SO GLAD we did and I would DRIVE BACK again just for the food this time. My family and I had the special of the day which was SMOKE PRIME rib. (Smoked all day in the smoker out back) Oh. My. Goodness. It was so tender so Smokey so juicy- just perfect. They also had pretty tasty rolls that spring back when you squish em... ok- the atmosphere was clean and friendly. I always get nervous in small towns since we are a colorful family- but they also had some diversity in the cooking staff. Yay! We had a pleasant eating experience. There were 3 of us, one got the 12oz Ribeye with baked potato and salad. Steak was excellent along with the baked potato and fresh crisp salad. I got the Shrimp Scampi with Baked Potato and Salad. The potato and salad were very good. The Shrimp Scampi was served on a bed of noodles in garlic butter. The shrimp was not hot. The noodles were warm and ok. The other person got the Scampi also with garlic mashed potatoes and grilled vegetables. All was good but the shrimp was too cool from laying on top of the noodles. We also got the fried portabello mushrooms as an appetizer and they were excellent. For me the next time I will get the steak Service was fast and efficient. The food was wonderful with the exception of the beer soup. (you can't please everyone). There were six of us that went out for dinner and not one of us was disappointed with our meals. All was delicious! Our service was less then exceptional. We rarely saw our waitress and when we did she was not very friendly. Let's chalk that up to her having a bad day. One thing I found to be very tacky is the price of sour cream. When you order a potato and add sour cream (not extra sour cream) it will cost you 50 cents extra. I would add 50 cents to the price of the potato whether you get sour cream or not and remove that from the menu. I know, I know I am anal at times. Otherwise I am very happy and definitely will be going back! read more

We stopped in mechanicsburg only because we needed gas on our way to Michigan. After seeing the smoker at Abe's out back, my husband and I both ordered smoked pork sandwiches. I'd like to give Abe's 5 stars. I'd also like to give them 2 or 3 stars. So they get 4. I was in Springfield, teaching my one-day Basic Hydraulics class. found Abe's on the Internet, and made the 20 minute drive to Abe's for dinner around 6 on a Saturday evening. Entering Abe's, we were thinking "this place is definitely worth the drive." We were greeted by two or three smiling people and seated quickly. It isn't a large place, but it was pretty doggone busy. Our waitress came to our table promptly, and our drinks and fried green bean appetizer arrived quickly. This is looking like a 5 star experience. One of of the evening's specials was prime rib, cooked in a smoker out back. We both decided to order the small prime rib, and that's when our experience started plummeting from that 5 star level. As we finished our appetizers, we watched other folks near us receive their food. About the time we started to wonder where our food might be hiding, our waitress came to our table, apologized for the delay, and explained that their printer hadn't printed our ticket. With everyone else in the restaurant receiving their food in a timely manner, you have to figure there's a real good chance the delay in our food's arrival was not because of a faulty printer. I would have been much happier if our waitress had smiled sheepishly, said "I'm sorry," and then told us that she'd goofed and hadn't submitted our ticket to the kitchen instead of implying the printer was at fault. Doing something like that might have actually increased her tip. On the plus side, our waitress told us about the delay in our order at about the same time we began wondering where our food was hiding. Kudos to her for discovering the problem and coming to tell us about it before we had to ask where our food was. As we waited for our food, I looked around the restaurant and saw a whole bunch of good looking food. It appeared that, no matter what we'd ordered, we'd have been happy with our meal. As the wait for our food continued, we wondered what was involved in preparing our prime rib dinners, since it was taking so long. I guess I was expecting that our waitress would have asked the cooks to move our order to the front of the queue. I don't think that happened, because our waitress didn't appear with our food until after we'd once again started wondering where our food might be hiding. And then we moved even further from that 5 star rating. Instead of two small orders of prime rib, we were presented with two large ribeye steaks. Our waitress apologized for the mixup and offered to replace the steaks with prime rib, but we both decided we'd be happy with the steaks. The house salad with house dressing was good, as were the coleslaw and potatoes. I found the steak to be very good, and it was cooked just the way I like it. It was tender, juicy, flavorful, and so big that I didn't eat it all. If we had ordered the steak, we would have been heading back to 5 star territory. Unfortunately, when our bill arrived, we moved even further from that 5 star territory. We were charged $49.98 for the two entrees, which was more than we were expecting. When we asked what the charge would have been if we'd received the prime rib we'd ordered, our waitress said the prime rib was $2 less than the ribeye steak. We'd eaten the ribeye steaks and the $4 difference didn't seem like enough to fuss about on the bill, so we paid the bill and left. And about half-way back to Springfield, it occurred to us that we'd ordered the small prime rib and the waitress was probably comparing the prices of the large prime rib with the large ribeye steak. As I write this, there is no prime rib shown on Abe's web site and the only rib eye steak shown is priced at $18.99 ($6 per meal less than we paid). Our waitress referred to our steaks as "the big ones" several times, so I'm guessing ours were larger than the ones on the online menu. Would I go back to Abe's? Yeppers - our steaks were good and everyone around us seemed to be enjoying their meals. We like to support local businesses, Abe's is certainly the kind of place we'd frequent if we lived nearby, and I'd really like to try their prime rib. Would I be happy to have the same waitress again? Yeppers - she was friendly, attentive, and caught her mistake (the ticket not being submitted) in a timely manner. I would have been MUCH happier if we'd received our prime rib and if our bill had been $12 or $14 less. Bottom line: If I'm in the Springfield area again, I'd be happy to eat at Abe's. read more

First time at abes, with wife. Wanted to try something different. Wife ordered the smoked prime rib. It was just ok, nothing to brag about. I ordered the house sirloin with baked potato. The sirloin was juicy and tender and cooked perfect for me. Let wife try a piece of my steak and she really liked it by far better than the smoked prime rib. My Baked potato was hard and dried out. Our appetizer was just an average run of the mill appetizer that was just ok. Our waitress was good. All the staff were friendly. Not to sure if we will try Abe's again. read more

Went on Saturday evening with friends. BBQ ribs are fantastic! They smoke them outside. I had steak which was also very good. Our server was as nice as can be and the cook who smoked the ribs was very interested to know whether they met expectations. Only setbacks were that we were seated by the door and had to shoo away flies. When a crowd came in, it got very noisy. And something went down the wall next to where my husband was sitting which was a little unnerving. I just got a glimpse, I hope it was just lint. It is worth going for the food. This place is a gem, I'm so glad it was brought to my attention by a friend. The lunch menus aren't too impressive in my view, but we've gone for dinner several times and the kindness of the staff coupled with the talent and love of the chefs make this place a serious winner. Good soup, steak, sides, and the special pork ribs are particularly amazing. Go out of your way and find this hole in the wall, you'll be glad you did. Update 4/17/2015: My wife and I have been trying quite a few new restaurants around Central Illinois. some have been good, some have been absolutely horrible and disappointing. Well, last night we both had a craving for Abe's Hideout. It was so, so, so good. We really needed a win and Abe's came through with flying colors. Don't know why it says closed. I ate there Thursday night (6/23/16) I have yet to have anything here that I haven't thoroughly enjoyed. The size of the Pony Shoe (latest try) was enough to completely fill me up. It came with seasoned fries. The seasoning didn't overwhelm with flavor and the cheese sauce was perfect. Not too thick / not too thin and had a great flavor. Have never experienced anything but superior service here. The pasta dishes are always hot, fresh and never overcooked; (I'd lay money they are not frozen) and the burgers are never dried out, the bourbon sauce is amazing. The kitchen is open till 9 pm and even when I've come in at 8:30 pm (the earliest I can get there with my work schedule) I have gotten hot, fresh food and they even made fresh coffee for me. Love the food, love the wait staff and I am obsessed with the architecture. The ceiling is gorgeous. You are in a 100 year old building but nothing feels outdated. It's as delicious on the eyes as it is on the appetite and always very clean. I'd go every day if I could. And will keep going back as often as possible. LOVE IT!! read more

To begin the food was average at best my wife had a taco salad and the only Mexican flavor was the salsa as the chicken was flavorless and the taco shell bowl was less than 1/2 full, My catfish was ok but my baked potato was at least a day old as you can tell by how dry the potato is when it has been reheated so this is why I gave it 2 stars but my main complaint is the service primarily the hostess, We live in Springfield but have gone out to Abe's over 25 times but always during the week and always had a waitress seat us but tonight a hostess seated us and I requested several empty tables of the 10 or so empty tables that we walked past so she could put is back in a corner in the very back surrounded by the bathroom doors, the kitchen saloon style doors where we got to listen to the kitchen help complaining and I quote "what the f**k stinks in this kitchen" at which point they all discussed no one could find the smell lol, Then next to us on the other side were the gaming machines making noise so a very unenjoyable dinner simply because the hostess couldn't double seat a waitress although 5 waitresses stood around the bar talking but it seems obvious that the customers were not her main priority it was making her staff happy but the last time I checked it is us the customers who pay the bills so we will never go back!! read more
