Derrick from Keys Plus Midtown is my hero. I have smart locks in my house. They are the kind where you, yourself, can change the key in the lock in about 15 seconds. I have had these locks for years, have changed the keys often, and I love them. Yesterday, I was in a hurry and did the front door key wrong, and it stuck in the locked position- neither the old key or the new key would work. I first called another high-rated locksmith on Yelp, because he was closer to my home. But he said smart locks are bad, and what he would do is replace it with a regular dead bolt. I then called Derrick, as his business also got high ratings and was second closest to my home. He first tried to explain to me over the phone how to take the lock apart and bring it in to re-key, as it would save me money. But I couldn't do it (I'm not exactly ms. mechanical), so he came out for the basic $75 home visit. He then showed me how to take the lock apart, so should it happen again, I can bring it in for re-keying, and it would only cost me $15 instead of the $75 home visit. What a nice person and an amazingly honest and helpful businessman! He's now in my business card folder as the go-to guy for anything to do with locks. I recommend him highly. read more

My review is about two years late, but I had to go there today, and it reminded me how happy I was with their service. I have an older house and was just moving in. I needed my old 1923 locks fixed, and I needed front and backdoor deadbolts and a door knob installed into an original 1923 door. Derek clearly knew his stuff with the old door locks and knobs and was able to salvage an old set to replace into another door. He put brand new 1" deadbolts on my front and back door as well. He did this all in a timely manner and he was very kind as well. Lastly, which is probably the most important part, is that he was incredibly competent and knowledgeable and since I like to know how things work, he explained them really well. Excellent!!!My car key broke out of the fob, I could still use it by putting the key in the ignition and then turning it with the fob, but I felt this wouldn't last very long, and it was a hassle. So I called this place because of their YELP reviews, and got a voicemail. I couldn't leave a message at the time but was going to call back. Maybe 5 minutes went by and I received a call back and spoke with Derrick. He quoted a very affordable price to replace it. I went directly there and was greeted by Kevin. I found this perfect guy for re-keying my 3 door locks to match same key. I uninstalled my door locks and brought all the parts to Derrick's store, he finished them in seconds and have them perfectly fixed, with UNBELIEVABLE fair price. I cannot believe when I see the invoice. I had inquiry other locksmiths (seems big chain business), their prices are just 4~5 times of Derrick's charge! **Price may be higher if you ask him to visit your house to do work there. Also I looked around the misc. parts selling at his store, all of them are same as the ones you can find at Home Depot or Lowe's, but just priced around 50%~80%. This guy is highly highly recommended for any issue related to locks But seems Derrick is the only staff of his store, a phone call & an appointment is necessary before knocking his door. There is no parking lot around his store though, you can park along the street (Broadway) and it's easy to find a space for temporary parking. read more
